As a Central/South Mexican what drew me to Japanese culture were the similarities in things like etiquette and manners. In Central/South Mexico politeness and etiquette are extremely important. These are areas more influenced by indigenous culture of Mexico. Loud people and show offs are not well liked. Also we are very passive aggressive and indirect when it comes to saying no or telling someone off. I've always hated the idea that Mexicans are supposed to be "loud and spicy" as were I'm from it's not like that at all. The one thing I will say is very different is that we are much more affectionate as a general rule.

It’s rude of me to say, but I’ve always felt like Japanese culture was colder, more reserved, almost restrictive. Even in the food, raw fish or seafood I see as “cold” food. I know there are many great things about the culture too. It’s just that I’m Native American and we are usually very reserved and stoic too, with some drawbacks, and my husband’s family who is Salvadorian is warm. Big laughs, spicy delicious food that feels like “warm food” to me. So I’ve become extremely (and happily) accustomed to his culture. I’m glad his culture rubbed off on me. It’s easier now to express my emotions.
That's wonderful that you've seen those things in your husband's family! Sorry your native American heritage has not provided as much warmth but perhaps you were meant to experience that warmth for yourself and share it with those that have not 🙂
Looking at you, I see both the Japanese and Mexican features and it’s so interesting. I’m full Colombian and grew up in the US. One of my cousins married a Japanese man and we have half Colombian and Japanese babies. Even though one of my best friends is Japanese and I’ve been exposed to his home and his customs at him home, when our families meet up it is such a shock. I’m way more loud and used to my big family (even by Latino catholic standards) just taking over and get togethers are always at least 20+ people and never dull. Someone’s always watching the kids, someone’s taking care of the food, someone’s taking turns keeping an eye are the tia/tio who gets a little too liberal with the Modelos. One of the first times we had a birthday party for one of the mixed babies, we had a bounce house and I was watching the little cousins play (there was maybe 4 or 5). When the Japanese kids joined, their individual moms came and watched with me. I told them that I could watch their kids if they wanted to go in and chat with the other adults, get some food, etc, because that’s what we usually do. We generally take turns so everyone kind of gets a break from their everyday thing and we can enjoy family we don’t see often. The looks I got, I felt so embarrassed because I’m pretty sure I insulted them. My friend later explained that I was pretty much a stranger so that wasn’t exactly polite and I hadn’t introduced myself or done anything to show respect, they technically didn’t know who I was. I just figured it was obvious which side of the family I was on. Lesson learned. Also, we’re big on affection (hugging everyone we meet, shake hands, kiss on the cheek, etc). That’s been hard to hold back with certain people because it is so ingrained in us.
Im Mexican and I know we love us some beer and correct me if I’m wrong but I know Japanese get their drink on! There’s a great Japanese spot I love to hit when I feel like drinking and their Ramen noodle soup is amazing it’s called Shin Sen Gumi I’ve been going there for years and back in the day I used to always show my appreciation to the chef and offer him a glass of Sapporo which he never turned down and it was a mandatory thing for us to always drink one together but it wasn’t like we sipped on the beer till it was finished we used to take it down like a shot at the same time which wasn’t easy for me but for him it was normal. I always tried to finish it faster than him but failed to do so every time and the crazy part was that it wasn’t his first beer of the night almost all regulars would do this with him but like a true champ he always took it down before anyone. He had it down to a science he would simply take it down in one gulp and this is a full glass no cap Fr. So I know that beer is huge in Japan cause we became close friends and I soon realized that almost all Japanese would get their drink on like the Irish upon waking up and till they knocked out 😊
Well provincial Mexicans are more reserved and more respectful to strangers, compared to Mexicans from big cities. Once you become acquainted with Mexicans they will treat you as family . Mexicans can be loud , but also well mannered for the most part never forgetting a handshake or hug on arriving or departure, respecting and showing compassion for children and the elderly. Most are extroverted and like to socialize. Dont be surprised if upon meeting a Mexican , you are at a party within the hour.

The hierarchy of elders or more experienced people at work is also there though not in such a concrete way. There's also something about the way people express themselves and even body language that I find is similar to Asians. This plays a role in the beef between US born Mexicans vs Mexican Natives as they often rub Mexican natives the wrong way for not being as toned down and reserved. I've never really liked the stereotype that Mexicans are "loud" and "spicy" as the kind of Mexican I always grew up around was always super polite.I believe what marks the difference is here is Mexicans who are more influenced by indigenous culture of Mexico tend to be somewhat more Asian-like where as northern Mexicans are the more cowboy-type ones.
So interesting 🤔. I’m US Mexican, but I definitely Identify more with the Japanese and Native Mexican personality. Very polite, quiet, and reserved. Always thinking about how my behavior is affecting others in public and making a very great effort to be respectful. I’m even an aspiring minimalist!

They're also extremely good at expressing themselves in Spanish and their indigenous language. I've never liked that "spicy" latino image personally.

Hi, Brandon as a Mexican who is married to a Vietnamese I would say Southeast Asians are more similar to Latinos or Mexicans in general in many ways compared to Japanese and Koreans and Chinese. Latinos and asians: family oriented, strong work ethic, manners, respectful, discipline, food 🥘 very important, religious. Difference: Latinos: emotional people, short tempers, argumentative, strong personalities, loud, late ⏰ I would say Mexicans can’t really speak for the rest of Latinos. Touch expression with hugs or kisses. Energetic, dancers , talkative. Asians: calm, time always on time. Karaoke 🎤, materialistic, quite with others but with family loud. Eat a lot I mean a lot. Work mentality, money 💴 money 💴, narrow minded not all but some are very. Clean got to be clean. Strict , superstition, high ceilings in professions.

Of course, none of these characteristics speak for every single person within those groups (You definitely seem like someone that understands that nuance already) But I've heard and experienced many of these same characteristics from Asians and Latinos, and I've dated Vietnamese women in the past and even they would talk about those characteristics within Vietnamese culture, specifically. I would say only say that Mexicans in general tend to be very late ⏰. For other latinos I cannot speak for. I have friends Central America and South America hardly any of them eat spicy 🌶️ food and some are not heavy drinkers either.

Reason why I ask is because their is a lot of difference between first generation Mexicans compared to third or fourth generation Mexicans. I can only speak for myself but I noticed many Mexicans that date someone from another ethnicity their kids hardly ever speak Spanish. The reason my siblings are all married to white folks and one is married to a Greek. Not once did I ever hear my siblings teaching their kids Spanish. Personally for myself I think is very important and I speak to my kids only Spanish and my wife speaks to them only Vietnamese makes a bit happy that they can speak and understand both and English of course but their is always the translation they have trouble with.

You don't have to care about how you are perceived by others. Just be yourself, It is healthy to establish boundaries. I am from neither culture. I am from Spain, also a warm and "loud" culture. We normally let people be. I personally value honesty a lot.

My parents are mexicans but I was born in the U.S., so I'm an american but I've always admired so much more about the Japanese culture than my own, I just love their etiquette so much, I even took the time to learn Japanese and then take Japanese ettique lessons, when I'm very fluent I can't wait to practice my etiquette and Japanese to Japanese tourists and surprise them

I would characterize mexico by how proud, celebratory and lively we are. We sure do stand out rather than blend in and I feel like this is the big difference between the two.
It really depends what type of Mexican you’re talking too because theres actually 2 stereotype about Mexican. Either hard drinkers or hardcore Christian or Catholic. There are Mexicans who are predominantly strict by being Christian or Catholic. I know because my family are very religious, quite, humble and disciplined 😅
Hello fellow Brandon lol, I definitely resonate with some of the characteristics you described in each culture. I myself am Black, Mexican, & Japanese so it's a whirlwind of different customs and how we express ourselves to one another. The most significant difference between the 3 is the little things in how we navigate conversations, family structures, and how we express love for one another.
What a great mix! As a half Asian myself, it’s always fun to see both sides of the culture. You can feel left out of either side sometimes, but you should learn to be proud of it!

Im black american and my husband is mexican and cuban but raised by his mexican side. I am expecting and honestly cant wait to see what temperament our son inherits from both sides. But even within cultures i realized there is so much variance. For instance my husband is from los angeles, so theres a very specific flavor of chicano from which he was raised. Im from central Ohio, where i find black culture differs a lot from our southern counterparts. So while his family is very loud and colorful and religious, my family is verh reserved, quiet and more secular in how we live (despite the fact my parents and grandparents are christian).
Rare mix. I’ve only come across another person with this same mix. I’m a quarter Japanese and the rest Mexican. I grew up with my Mexican mother and not my Japanese side of the family so I would consider myself more Mexican but carry a lot of Japanese traits.
I think both cultures are extremely humble… us Mexicans are extremely loud and talk over one another bc it’s out of humility lol, maybe not a quiet humility like other cultures but humility none the less… but show me a Mexican who doesn’t have an open mind and intrigue towards other cultures
We're polar opposites. Japanese people are much more polite and considerate. Mexicans... we're much more abrasive and loud. But never a Japanese stranger will help you navigate a subway station... While Mexicans while even buy you a ticket, pat you on the back and share some taquitos with you.

I have to know the answer to this.. I have seen this numerous times at all the grocery stores in my area. Is it a cultural thing to take up the entire isle and be completely unaware of their surroundings? It happens every single time I'm at the store and it's always a mexican family. I'm always dumbfounded of the situation. I have no problem with any race other than the miniscule dumb quirks each have. But I've always wondered if maybe I wasn't alone with this observation
Thanks for sharing. I've been to Mexico quite a bit, numerous states/cities, and in some cases for months at a time. I will continue traveling there as a way of learning and growing. Also, this 60-second video is not really a comprehensive view on both cultures but more of a snippet. Some people shared criticism because they said it seemed like I favored one culture over the other and I made Japanese culture sound flawless. It certainly is not and, based on my travel history and my dedication to the Spanish language, I think it's apparent that I don't favor Japanese culture over Mexican but I could see how people might think that based on these 60 seconds. Respect is important in both cultures. We also celebrate our ancestors as Day of the Dead. Mexicano we hug and my Japanese family hate it. But, they know me now.. they love the Hugs.😅

Hi, Brandon as a Mexican who is married to a Vietnamese I would say Southeast Asians are more similar to Latinos or Mexicans in general in many ways compared to Japanese and Koreans and Chinese.
Latinos and asians: family oriented, strong work ethic, manners, respectful, discipline, food 🥘 very important, religious.
Difference:
Latinos: emotional people, short tempers, argumentative, strong personalities, loud, late ⏰ I would say Mexicans can’t really speak for the rest of Latinos. Touch expression with hugs or kisses. Energetic, dancers , talkative.
Asians: calm, time always on time. Karaoke 🎤, materialistic, quite with others but with family loud. Eat a lot I mean a lot. Work mentality, money 💴 money 💴, narrow minded not all but some are very. Clean got to be clean. Strict , superstition, high ceilings in professions.
Anthony, you hit on SO many good points! Of course, none of these characteristics speak for every single person within those groups (You definitely seem like someone that understands that nuance already) But I've heard and experienced many of these same characteristics from Asians and Latinos, and I've dated Vietnamese women in the past and even they would talk about those characteristics within Vietnamese culture, specifically. I would say only say that Mexicans in general tend to be very late ⏰. For other latinos I cannot speak for. I have friends Central America and South America hardly any of them eat spicy 🌶️ food and some are not heavy drinkers either.

Reason why I ask is because their is a lot of difference between first generation Mexicans compared to third or fourth generation Mexicans. I can only speak for myself but I noticed many Mexicans that date someone from another ethnicity their kids hardly ever speak Spanish. The reason my siblings are all married to white folks and one is married to a Greek. Not once did I ever hear my siblings teaching their kids Spanish. Personally for myself I think is very important and I speak to my kids only Spanish and my wife speaks to them only Vietnamese makes a bit happy that they can speak and understand both and English of course but their is always the translation they have trouble with.

My Mexican mom has a bad habit of talking over my conversations with my siblings, but I've learned to involve them into the conversation whenever possible. She wants to talk too.
My parents are mexicans but I was born in the U.S., so I'm an american but I've always admired so much more about the Japanese culture than my own, I just love their etiquette so much, I even took the time to learn Japanese and then take Japanese ettique lessons, when I'm very fluent I can't wait to practice my etiquette and Japanese to Japanese tourists and surprise them

I would characterize mexico by how proud, celebratory and lively we are. We sure do stand out rather than blend in and I feel like this is the big difference between the two.

It really depends what type of Mexican you’re talking too because theres actually 2 stereotype about Mexican. Either hard drinkers or hardcore Christian or Catholic. There are Mexicans who are predominantly strict by being Christian or Catholic. I know because my family are very religious, quite, humble and disciplined 😅

I myself am Black, Mexican, & Japanese so it's a whirlwind of different customs and how we express ourselves to one another. The most significant difference between the 3 is the little things in how we navigate conversations, family structures, and how we express love for one another.

Im black american and my husband is mexican and cuban but raised by his mexican side. I am expecting and honestly cant wait to see what temperament our son inherits from both sides. But even within cultures i realized there is so much variance. For instance my husband is from los angeles, so theres a very specific flavor of chicano from which he was raised. Im from central Ohio, where i find black culture differs a lot from our southern counterparts. So while his family is very loud and colorful and religious, my family is verh reserved, quiet and more secular in how we live (despite the fact my parents and grandparents are christian).

Rare mix. I’ve only come across another person with this same mix. I’m a quarter Japanese and the rest Mexican. I grew up with my Mexican mother and not my Japanese side of the family so I would consider myself more Mexican but carry a lot of Japanese traits.

I have to know the answer to this.. I have seen this numerous times at all the grocery stores in my area. Is it a cultural thing to take up the entire isle and be completely unaware of their surroundings? It happens every single time I'm at the store and it's always a mexican family. I'm always dumbfounded of the situation. I have no problem with any race other than the miniscule dumb quirks each have. But I've always wondered if maybe I wasn't alone with this observation

Thanks for sharing. I've been to Mexico quite a bit, numerous states/cities, and in some cases for months at a time. I will continue traveling there as a way of learning and growing. Also, this 60-second video is not really a comprehensive view on both cultures but more of a snippet. Some people shared criticism because they said it seemed like I favored one culture over the other and I made Japanese culture sound flawless. It certainly is not and, based on my travel history and my dedication to the Spanish language, I think it's apparent that I don't favor Japanese culture over Mexican but I could see how people might think that based on these 60 seconds. Again, thanks for sharing!
