Canvas Poncho Shelter Setups - Solo Bushcraft and Camping Overnight

- Out camping and hiking with the NVA Zeltbahn ponchos. Ive had this idea for a while wearing two polish lavvu ponchos over each other. But the East German ponchos were more suited for this. I was afraid things would get too thick and heavy on the feel but there was hardly any difference. The dispersed weight like this makes it disappear. The two layered canvas made it a very warm poncho and it wouldn't surprise me if it can stand up against rain and wind really good. It's difficult to film and explain exactly how I did this. When lining up the ponchos make sure to have the armholes etc the right way. There are two ways to do this. Simply unbutton everything but the bottom part of the ponchos preventing them drag into the ground and put on one poncho at a time over each other. However I wanted to take things one step further. Two ponchos can be buttoned together with two rows of buttons making a tight seal against weather for shelter making. I wanted to just pull off the poncho (ponchos) and have a huge tarp to make a shelter right away... and don't spend too much time fiddling with all those buttons. Specially nice if its cold weather outside. All lavvuiers messing with metal buttons in cold and ice with bare hands know what I'm talking about. People complain the buttons are hard on the hands but that's just an issue first time. After a few uses things get easier. Solution was half way there. Leaving one row of buttons undone, leaving a flap left to be able to button against the outer poncho layer on the other side to have the poncho buttoned around you. The under layer of that side can hang freely.
Improvised 6 shelter setups on site. Came out pretty nice. I can also think about a few lean too's with floor and a few on the fly, but felt 6 was enough this time. The shelter I decided to use here was huge to sleep under for me and plenty of room for my gear. I gave each shelter a number hardcoded in the video so I can discuss any of them with you guys.
Second day the weather cleared up in the afternoon and went for a good hike in temperatures that dropped rapidly. Awesome views and ended the trip with an hour of listening to the ice sing in a dark golden sunset.
As always thank you for watching!

My ex bf suggested me this channel, we are not together anymore but this is the only good thing he left for me
Thanks for watching!
One of my favorite comments about anything, ever! 😂
That's a shame.
@@moorshound3243 a shame? Why?
Way better than syphilis
Mr. Swedwoods is my favorite UA-cam creator. When I watch your videos, I always feel happy and calm. So I like watch your videos. Be careful of your sefety! Thank you.
Thank you kindly!
Just in time to enjoy with my morning coffee ☕️
i have seen his vids and erik is more of a modern day "backpacker". you, on the other hand, are real mccoy .... a true bushcrafter who keeps the tradition alive. this is what i want to see ! i do hope you don't change your ways ......
I didn't think I would like this video that much given the title, but you proved me wrong again.
Your salute to Erik Normark is not only well deserved but shows your good taste.
Keep up the good work mate.
I think your reaction to coffee drinking in the video is the first time ever. That’s nice! Communications with the subscribers are always right.
Thanx for your video.
Its a wink to another channel of a guy that always do that. One time only. Thanks!
Another Erik Normark fan here. I'm often savoring a mug of sacramental Arabica bean when he's preparing one, and recognized and enjoyed your gesture of solidarity! The encroaching years keep my forays outdoors short and restricted to groomed trails, but your (and Erik's) adventures keep my memories alive - for that I thank you both.
Oh u got erik's coffee ceremony 😁
Nice shout out to Eric 👍and his signature coffee approval. Thanks for another great view of your beautiful forests. Something special about sitting quietly and watching the sunrise. Recharges the soul. Get that same energy from sitting on the beach in a bathing suit and hoody in Baja Mexico and watching the sun set.
Thanks my friend!
Great video! You should do more videos showcasing your gear and how you use it. I’ve been camping for many years and appreciate seeing other peoples techniques as to constantly improve my own
Good that you gave a Thumbs up to Erik. He had a great channel.
Has! Thanks!
@@Swedwoods yes, has! 😆😆
My favorite Saturday pastime! Thanks for being so good about keeping the series going so regularly. It really gives us something to look forward to every other Saturday! Love the different setups. Got to say, the Chili Con Carne was the strangest version I have ever seen. Looked like Cream of Chili. LOL!
Thanks! Yeah that was the first and last I tried with that brand.
Again, my friend, a great video. I know Eric's videos on UA-cam and they are spectacular. Peace and calm in both that is what the world needs. Hugs, friend.
Why do I always get hungry while watching these videos?😄
I had to laugh when I saw the thumbs up with the first sip of coffee! Although I watch a few channels, I follow yours and Erik’s religiously. You are the only two channels that I can watch the same video over and over again. Their serenity and beauty bring me peace. Thank you.
Thank you my friend!
@@Swedwoods Hello from USA. Is there a place that NVA Zeltbahn version could be purchased, and do you have a link or info. I have searched but haven't found. Thank you! Live the videos!
Thank you for sharing;especially ice singing & Erik!
Great Demo on all the ways to use cape-poncho. As always wonderful video. I only live this life of outdoors through you. I watch every one of them. Ric's channel brought me here. He is missed but I found another love. Thank you
Miss Ric also, but thankful for Erik
Nice plash palatka tent...and great rainponcho...all in one...best ever in the world 👍👍
I can't imagine a situation that you could not handle. Thank you for the inspiration.
Maybe sleeping in a horrid cityscape with people wanting to rob you or the cops wanting to cuff you just for wanting to lay your head down & sleep?
Thanks you for sharing your beautiful winter trip. | I Really Like Video You
I'm your longtime subscriber and I was so surprised when you thumbed up at the camera! ❤️And I know Erik! 😄 I smiled for a while ✨
good evening
Nice video.
We are always rooting for you from Japan! 👍
Very nice my friend! I totally agree, Eric's work is epic 🤠
Thank you!
You have amazing talent to pack and carry all needed equipment in such a compact unit. This happens everytime and maybe you could give some golden advice towards this productive minimalism for us. Thanks, Janne
Very instructional video on different tarp set-ups, great scenery across the frozen lakes. 👍
Thanks!
one of my favorite things about your videos is that you work so hard to keep from narrating as you work and what not. not that 'i don't want to hear your voice' just that the sounds of nature are themselves so very pleasing. also, when i miss something or i rewind the video to see something again or show the wife, i always talk to you like im there. 'hey wait go back, i wasn't listening' i love it, keep up the great work!!
Great sounds and shots of the Swedish wilderness..thumbs up to erik from me as well...yet my personal fav is sweed. Thanks for another great video friend
Great video! loved the ending especially
Thank you very much!
@@Swedwoods Yeah, I'm always happy when they end! 😁
Hi. Good video. Super bushcraft. Beautiful sunset) thank you very much!
A beautiful and quiet place. Thank you for your great effort.... I love watching your videos very much
How bizarre that is with the ice! _So beautiful_ . Thank you for sharing that almost alien-like-world experience! And how cool (for me, at least) that I was just a few nites ago looking up at the same moon during my own four day winter hike into the N. Cascades! Thank You, Swedwood!
Fascinating again and again! Thank you very much! Best regards! JD
Thank you!
Another amazing video. Such a grand way to start my day. (USA 8 am here). What a wonderfully versatile piece of equipment your "wearable tent" turned out to be. The time you must spend making these videos is greatly appreciated by this subscriber. Anxiously awaiting your next video. 😀😀
A job that strengthens the soul.... Super with the Canvas!!!🤔
Great film for my opinion the best shelter it's nr 5 👍😁
I always look forward to seeing a new video from you, and I’m never disappointed! Thank you.
I too watch and look forward to each of Erik Normarks videos. So different from yours but just as entertaining. He is also a very talented artist. I did smile to see your thumbs up for your coffee and knew who it was for right away, as many others did I’m sure.
You two gentlemen are the best. Please keep up the videos.
Thank you
Thanks
Thank You Mr Swed !! I always Enjoy 👍
damn near perfect sunset, then the moment is gone.
always capturing the very best of what nature gives you to share with us!!
Thanks!
Thanks for your video. Its so Calming. Its my Timeout from everything
You are my favorite youtuber. Love the simplicity of everything. Just enjoying nature as it is intended to be. I also watch Eric Normark for his simplicity and coffee :-) Huge thumbs up to the both of you!
Thumbs up to you too for your excellent films. Thanks for sharing.
Great Winter Camping Adventure !! Thanks For Sharing Various Canvas Poncho Setups, Very Interesting.
Great video on The Swedwoods Method! I would love to see something explaining where to situate a fire, depending on the shelter type, wind, etc. Love your content!
Another excellent video. Thanks for sharing.
You and Erik inspired me to take all of my best equipment including my Lavvu all the way from Melbourne Australia to Muddus National Park in Sweden late last year. You're both an inspiration and I cannot thank you enough for giving me a hobby that now takes me around the world... The only other hiking UA-camr I watch is yet another European, Harmen Hoek, whose dialogue-free videos are cinematic beyond belief, especially his most recent trip to the Wadi Rum desert in Jordan.
Good video again. Always a pleasure
I've been watching your stuff for a while now and today I learned that building on Valheim while watching you show me how to become a wizard with fire(You're a fire Wizard I'm convinced) and neat bushcraft tricks with sticks and paracord is probably one of my favorite things to do. Thanks for all the great videos and hard work!
As always, thank you for all the work you put into these. After a day of "blue light" your stories are a welcome reprieve. I've hiked/camped for 60+ years and still pick up on things I see you do...sometimes as subtle as the turn of wrist or hand in a task. And I agree w/you about Erik's body of work--exceptional ... as is yours! Regards, Doug
Another beautiful short film. Nice callout to Erik, too! You make it look so easy, even though it's obviously very cold. "Ice singing" - such a strange sound! Lovely video. Thank you.
great epizode, thanks from Poland
wonderful video thanks 👍🌲🤝
Thank you!
I love the detail. Great ideas. Thx
Thanks!
Peaceful video awesome with breakfast 🖒
There are only two outdoor youtubers worth the attention: Swedwoods and Erik Normark. Keep up great work!
Thank you!
You have to be adapted to the cold to endure it with just a sweater.
All attention. great videos Many Thanks. I always watch Sunday mornings when everyone is still sleeping.
🤗
@34:11 WAUW - I jumped. I have heard many ice singing, but not as loud as this one. Incredible beautiful. I just love the nature
Watching this inside my tent ☺️
awesome sunset..
beautiful content as per usual..
thanks 👍 keep it up man. .
Excellent explanations and demonstrations, obviously a versatile object. I actually really like the imagery of your Trangia tea pot / coffee pot...it looks well-used and well-travelled.
Thanks!
Very nice video, the ending was gorgeous. I always sit down and relax. Thanks for sharing. 🙋♂️👍
I have never before seen the 'storm shelter' layout you demonstrate here. Thank you.
That’s pack-stool is slick 👌🏼
Bravo et merci pour votre courage
Ramen and a steak absolutely awesome
Another great video. Love the different shelter configurations. You should make a video with Erik normark. That would be great.
Wearing your shelter. What a great idea!!🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪
Very informative 👍🏴
Thanks!
This is great to watch! 🔥
a mi me gustaron la primera y la quinta confuguracion saludos
Are there any words to say how greatful your content is? NO! I feel what i see, so close like stand on your side. So fantastic pictures.
Thank you very much!
Hello, I served two years as an officer candidate in the West German Bundeswehr and knew all the tanks and weapons of the GDR army but none of us knew this poncho/tent combination. (-: I agree with you 100%, Erik limits himself to what is primarily important outside. The Finn Ali Leinö is also very close to nature. Greetings from the German North Eifel. Alex
Greetings! Thank you!
Very nicely done video.
I thought the version between 5 and 6 was good.
When you made 6 out of 5, you lifted up the left corner. I really liked the version that was then visible. Open on one side so that you can see a lot and closed against the storm so that you are protected.
Sehr schönes Video. Vielen Dank!
Great tent setup!
Thank you!
Magnifique.
Thanks!
great video, I watch Erik Nordmark too ,recognized the typical coffee greeting haha
Great with lots of ideas
thank you. i would catch pneumonia listening to the ice all night long.
Thanks!
I also have 2 of those Canvas Ponchos. But i mostly use them as a Poncho, Ground sheet or Windstoper because they are quiet small. Never thought about using them in that way tbh. But i might try next time i am out.
Thanks for the video
Thanks!
Thanks bro. You’re right about Erik. One thing I learned from another youtuber is to store trangia in lower half of wool sock. Protects from heat.
Good to know if you need to leave in a second... or you wait 10 sec for it to cool😏 thanks!
Muy buen video.saludos y un abrazo amigo 👍😊
Thanks!
Canvas, like wool and leather: strong, fire resistant, and durable!!
Thank you !!! Will now also buy a second Romanian Zeltbahn .... are probably identical in size !!!!
wah Soo biutifull camping ground
I've wanted an extra large size Polish Lavvu for some time (I'm 6'5") but the import cost is crazy expensive, guess I'll have to keep on wishing. This German version is different for sure, maybe a better tarp/tent but not sure about the poncho set up part. These are some nice set up variations, very usable. What's amazing to me is how you found that flat piece of land😉 Second day was all grandeur, wonderful filming and presentation, well done of course, thanks. Chili con carne..I don't think so, hope you felt okay later.. Enjoy!
Very nice video. I very like tarp and I hawe two . Thank you.
Thanks!
@@Swedwoods pless welcome.
Thanks for the recording😀
Thanks for watching!
Nice brotha!🌲
Thanks!
You must have been a happy man to travel with a lighter pack than usual and ...no snow to slow you down ! But where is the snow anyway ? Thanks for sharing
Yes! Been waiting for this. As much as i love your usual ASMR style videos, would you consider making a dedicated series on how to videos? That would be awesome. Love your work.
Thanks! If I ever figure that out I might give it a go.
holy sh!t that end scene
I been waiting for your new upload thanks…
Thanks!
This was awesome sir! That was a great tip of the hat to Erik! He’s one of my favorites as well. It was you, Erik and Ric that got me into bushcraft videos to be honest. I follow a couple lads out of the UK, one from Scotland and a handful out of canada. You even used the same stove he has! That was really cool! Oh i was wondering if you stayed out that night at the end of the video? Thanks so much SW. take care and be well. NQU
Ahhhh the thumbs-up at 30:34, I think I know exactly who that is aimed at! 🤣
TOP 👍👍👍👌👌👌PERFEKT!!!!!!!!
Thanks!
فيديو رائع
Thank you!
