  • Hello everyone!
    Time for another book review!
Oh what a joy to read this book published in 2014 and longlisted for the Man Booker Prize.
I loved it because it's the story of a man who tries to save his marriage and reconnect with his son and in the process goes through an intense introspection about his life and himself. There's also train journeys through Europe and perspectives on art because like the Grand Tours that young men did back in the 18th and 19th century, Douglas does his own journey to find himself.
Watch out for the series on BBC (in Australia it will be out on Foxtel at the end of this month).

My father gifted me this book back around 2019 when I was 14 and despite being beyound it's age demographic, I regognised the importance of a book that shows that 40-50 year old stage of life where everythings changing around you and the only thing you can think about is how to stop it or what you could have done better. It helped me with empathise with my parents and the adults around me and it still helps me to accept the changes that happen around me as well as let go of the past. Now that I'm just entering adulthood I know which mistakes not to make and how to go about it thanks to the son.
I'm bringing some of my old books to a second hand shop soon so I was cleaning out my book shelve but I couldn't bare to take out this one It's one of those stories that you simply cannot forget or throw away because it grows with you. With every stage of life, it gives you a new perspective of the life and people around you. I juet hope I won't relate to Mr.Petersons marriage issues when I reread it again in 20 years.

Wow. What an absolutely wonderful story about this book and how it made you aware of what your parents were going through. Such a mature and perceptive approach and I wish I had this in my 20s. I was utterly clueless to the challenges that both men and women face when they reach a certain age in their 40s, 50s. A time of great change to not only their bodies, their work, their family, mindsets. They don’t call it mid-life crisis for nothing. It’s like you wake up one day and then see that you have “one life” and if you haven’t done the things you wanted - or things that make you feel like a kid again - carefree, spontaneous, to find your own “me” without other’s expectations (goes for men AND women), that’s when reality hits you and it’s this driving need to make a change. This is what breaks up couples, families, work situations etc. (The scientist in me also says that it’s the changing levels of hormones in our systems as the body ages that is the driving factor but let’s leave the scientific factors as the creative, passionate, spontaneous actions are what people notice about themselves). So my word of advice to you is just enjoy every day of your life. Do the things you want to do, find times to find “you” when things get too crazy with work and family and life. Never have any regrets.

I was so glad that I read this book. I was very surprised by the book and really related to the book. I was so connected to the characters and was rooting for the family but equally understood the sacrifices you make for family. I haven't read one day yet so this was a first for me from the author. For me was the this was a best book I have read in a long time and will stay with me for a long time. I have since watched the drama based on the book and really took the viewers on a mini holiday through the screen and also was well done and did the book justice. Thank you for the review and enjoy your book thoughts.
