Why am I cheering for a co-dependent relationship between a brilliant serial killer and a man trying desperately to hold onto his last shred of humanity?
What I love about this scene is how impersonal Will tried to keep it, only to have Hannibal throw the most personal things at him. Will addressing Hannibal as ‘Dr.Lecter’ and Hannibal addressing him as ‘Will’ right back. Will saying “I’m more comfortable the less personal we are” follows with Hannibal saying “I smell dogs and pine beneath that shaving lotion.” and “I gave you a child if you recall.” Will doesn’t respond to that and instead brings up the case and Hannibal responds with “You just came here to look at me.” And finally, Hannibal ends it with “You are family, Will.” Through the entire exchange, Hannibal completely rejects Will’s attempts at keeping it impersonal. It’s one of the very few times we see Hannibal so openly incessant and desperate. The other time ofcourse, was when he surrendered.

Hannibal was right on the money, he missed him, needed to see him again and his facial expressions show that he still feels the same about Hannibal, that even after everything, he still wants to run away with him, to be with him. Great acting from both, but particularly Hugh Dancy on this scene.
Hannibal’s Subtext : “Did you get my note? Did you read it before you burned it? “ translates to “Did you get my love letter? Did you reject me?” “I’m glad you came. My other callers are all professional...pencil lickers...” translates to “I missed you and our interactions and conversations. Everyone but you is dull and unworthy of me.” “Are we no longer on a first name basis?” Translates to “Are we no longer as intimate as we used to be?” (Plus the glint in his eye) “Is there a child in your life? I gave you a child if you recall.” Translates to “We were fathers once, did you forget about our child? Do you even remember that I gave you a child?” “You just came to look at me, came to get the old scent again. Why don’t you just smell yourself?” Translates to “I feel offended that you’re using me as a means to your end. So I’m going to throw in a snarky comment to get back at you.” “Let me have the file. An hour and we can discuss it like old times.” Translates to “Alright I give in because I can’t resist you. I will do what you tell me because I miss our old relationship and want to remind myself of what it was like again.” “You’re family, Will.” Translates to “You’re so embedded in me that I feel like we are made from the same blood and flesh. We are One. Together we are whole. I feel complete with you.” His words in this scene are completely laden with meaning and emotions.
He’s so courteous and stoical that the meanings behind his words are easy to miss but not impossible to decipher if you listen closely😂 Hannibal is always deliberate with his speech and I think he’s the type to be concise down to a single word ( he has to be as a psychiatrist. One wrong word and he affects a patient’s mind ). Plus he’s always using implicit puns about him being a cannibal and inside jokes with himself in front of others. But when it comes to Will, his persona or “person suit” as Bedelia says is penetrable to some extent because you can detect extreme vulnerability behind his words even if his appearance deceives. He feels so deeply for Will from his words don’t let his polite demeanour fool you😭😭
at 1:22 when Hannibal says "I gave you a child, if you recall" you can feel the punch land. To me i could physically feel the way Will surpressed falling into talking about Abigail and maybe even yelling at Hannibal for taking her away from him too. it's such a subtle change in his demeanor but it feels so real, Hugh is a phenomenal actor
1:46 that little scuffle of a laugh from hannibal and the relief that washes over his face when he realizes will is still very much entangled into his feelings for hannibal. And then hannibal suddenly becoming cocky with the "you just came to look at me" translating to "you couldnt help but come back to me even though you tried so hard to stay away"
He made it so, his face was all over the news, his trial went on forever, and still relevant 3 years later. He kept Will emotionally invested by not going away.
Mads Mikkelsen is *superb* in this role. I don't know how it does it, but when he speaks to Will in scenes like this, the text is almost irrelevant to me. The way he *looks* at him, though. If that's not love, I don't know what it is. The very definition of longing. ♥️

This show is soooo subtle that I never noticed that this was a brilliant reference to Lambs and Red dragon with the glass divider. Even tho it’s pretty obvious.
It's crazy how the "homocidal tendencies" Will tries to escape from can be seen as a way to repress his own desire to be Hannibal's lover. To think that the only way Will found to avoid being together with Hannibal and run away with him was to marry a woman and create a conventional heteronormative family with her is proof enough of that. I'm amazed at how the show's creator managed to make it so obvious yet so subtle during every episode, but especially in this scene. Here, it's just Hannibal trying to get under Will's skin as an ex-lover would by watching him move on with his life and Will trying his hardest not to fall for his charms again.
I love how the show took Red Dragon and used it to further the story they were already telling. This scene isn’t faithful the the book the way Manhunter or Red Dragon were but it has its own set of subtext and meaning. So well done!

I feel deep feelings including romantic love on Hannibal's side. But on the Will's side, I don't feel love. I feel adrenalin, addiction and strong fear at the same time. Will's attachment to Hannibal is one that of Frodo's attachment to the one ring. He knows it's evil, he knows it influences him badly, he knows it consumes him he HATES it and yet he can't separate from it. Like something Will is addicted to. He knows Hannibal turns him into a devil but still he likes this pain given to him and it's so sick. But undeniable at the same time. Will just wants to kill Hannibal but also is fascinated by his intelligence and evil as well
Yeah honestly I still dunno til the end if Will loved Hanni the way Hanni did him. Still more of a codependency. In my head, season 4 is them how Hanni-Clarice ended up in the book: living a rather normal life together in Florence 🥲 since TV Will according to Bryan is Will Graham with so much of Clarice.

I've read somewhere that Bryan's season 4 was based on Will accepting his inner persona Hannibal had put in him and they go to Argentina together becoming murderer boyfriends or something like that. At least I know for sure that season 4 , if it ever had happened, was going to focus on the two murdering and eating people
For hannibal being in love must be so new and as he is already a killer and so many things will is like a good husband material for him..but as for will ..will knows hannibal is a bad person or not even a person but a Satan he knows he eats people , is a manipulator and what not but he still feels something for him which is hard for him to accept so maybe that's why will is not very open about his feelings for hannibal ..but there are some instances where you can feel his love for him..the first time hannibal was going to get caught by the FBI will called him so he won't get caught the second time in season 3 as well he plans to let hannibal go away..these moments show his love for hannibal ..

Judging by his lips were slightly open, he was displaying arousal . They never fully explored the sexual attraction between Will and Hannibal but considering that they are both shown to have healthy libidos with other partners, I believe there is THAT aspect to their relationship. After all, they’re both very attractive men in addition to their emotional connection.
Am I being too harsh to expect Mads to use a little different body language? he's been a good performer in most every sense and was once an dancer - he really good at his moviment ...but I can't deny that but there are some things I'd like to see in a Dr. Lecter. The first is a straight walk to Will in the first minutes , Lecter steps is too " swaying " to me . Bc as I read books and watched some movies about Hanni, he is described as someone who has a very neat control over his body (which makes me really like Anthony's Lecter role, his movements is very straight and fast but not stiff like a machine )which seemed to have an intention of where he wanted to put his feet and where his limbs were. But here the swaying showed me a relaxation, as light as his home, but also a lack of control his steps as he spreads his feet wide as he walks and the limbs wayving freely ... I may not understand the meaning but the feeling I see is a somewhat clumsy and indifferent approach to the person in front of him . But for the rest of the video, Hanni's movements are fast and rhythmic, especially since he immediately follows Will when he hands him the file , or about the attitude and performe it's jusst amazing
It's obviously on purpose, he's mirroring Will. He also mirrors his angry walk when they meet after Will's family gets attacked. I think it's Hannibal's playful way of showing that they're both similar people and have much more in common than Will believes.

Yeah honestly I still dunno til the end if Will loved Hanni the way Hanni did him. Still more of a codependency. In my head, season 4 is them how Hanni-Clarice ended up in the book: living a rather normal life together in Florence 🥲 since TV Will according to Bryan is Will Graham with so much of Clarice.

I've read somewhere that Bryan's season 4 was based on Will accepting his inner persona Hannibal had put in him and they go to Argentina together becoming murderer boyfriends or something like that. For hannibal being in love must be so new and as he is already a killer and so many things will is like a good husband material for him..but as for will ..will knows hannibal is a bad person or not even a person but a Satan he knows he eats people , is a manipulator and what not but he still feels something for him which is hard for him to accept so maybe that's why will is not very open about his feelings for hannibal ..but there are some instances where you can feel his love for him..the first time hannibal was going to get caught by the FBI will called him so he won't get caught the second time in season 3 as well he plans to let hannibal go away..these moments show his love for hannibal ..

Am I being too harsh to expect Mads to use a little different body language? he's been a good performer in most every sense and was once an dancer - he really good at his moviment ...but I can't deny that but there are some things I'd like to see in a Dr. Lecter.
The first is a straight walk to Will in the first minutes , Lecter steps is too " swaying " to me . Bc as I read books and watched some movies about Hanni, he is described as someone who has a very neat control over his body (which makes me really like Anthony's Lecter role, his movements is very straight and fast but not stiff like a machine )which seemed to have an intention of where he wanted to put his feet and where his limbs were.
But here the swaying showed me a relaxation, as light as his home, but also a lack of control his steps as he spreads his feet wide as he walks and the limbs wayving freely ... I may not understand the meaning but the feeling I see is a somewhat clumsy and indifferent approach to the person in front of him . But for the rest of the video, Hanni's movements are fast and rhythmic, especially since he immediately follows Will when he hands him the file , or about the attitude and performe it's jusst amazing
I expect that to be done on purpose to emphasize the effect will has on him
