Pixar may be the one known for adding cg short films before their movies, but Disney does it too! And one stands out from the crowd as the clear cream of the crop! Not only blending the aesthetics of traditional 2D animation and modern 3D CGI, but also giving us a artistic black and white sheen. A short so successful it even won Disney an award at the Oscars. This is all about Disney's Paperman!

...It's nice to know that given the right prompt, some genuine artistic prowess can come out from the Disney machine. Though maybe with the news of a rise in train commute stares, maybe this romance story is a little more outdated right now...
Disney: Let's never make a movie using this style ever again.
I remember reading an interview that the reason Disney hasn't made a movie in this style is because they "haven't perfected it yet."
It's been 10 years, Disney.
Well that's a shame.
“Now let’s all agree, to never be creative again.”
Pretty much actually I thought this was going to be a style that Disney was going to Heavenly start relying on but they said nope let's never do this again.
I think they will have you heard the news, that Disney Will make some 2D animation
When I saw Paperman in theaters, I was blown away on how it looked. It's a perfect blend of 2D and CGI animation. As much as I like some of Disney's recent animated films in the last couple years, I really wish they made one that looked exactly like this.
same
Me too I really thought that this was going to be a cool new style of animation for Disney but they said no.
hehe THEATERSB YOU SAY
The movie Wish, which Will be out in november, will have this artstyle apparently
I miss when films at the cinema had animated shorts before the main movie
They still do?
@@chidivids2005 Encanto had a short and it was soooo intense
@@anonymouswolfemale3557 what was the short movie?

I remember seeing this before Wreck it Ralph started with my dad. And while I love Wreck it Ralph. If you didn't tell me that Paperman played before it, I would've forgot what film we actually went to see that day.
Yeah lol
SAME
I’m an animator now. But paperman is what started my real journey. It changed my life and I’m so thankful to have gotten the chance to tell the director what it meant to me
An oposite example of the “prim and perfect girl” vs. the “rough around the edges” guy might be when Carl and Ellie meet in “Up”
Paperman will always be one of my favorite Disney shorts. I always hoped that its success would make Disney realize the appeal of 2D styled animation to audiences bc its just such a gorgeous style
I kinda wish this was a full film for 2011. A really great slice of life story of 2 people living life and developing together in a relationship but has to deal with how much life can be hard to get used to on you when you finally move out of having a typical day.
they actually made 2 more shorts with this tech, first in Feast (which came before Big Hero 6) and Inner workings (came out with Moana; the one shown in the vid)
I watched this short with my mom and it’s our favourite short
My personal Favourite Disney short, it's style resonates with me because of those old 2D films
Paperman is honestly just one of my favorite things Disney has made in general, it’s so cute and has a perfect style of animation.
Who else appreciates that this has no voice acting no color besides the lipstick, my inner artist Is So Satisfied
The comment you made on the woman being prim and proper and the man being rough around the edges is exactly what I was thinking during the entire video! Like, I don't want to be one of _those_ people, but it just seems a little bit like "assigning roles," if you know what I mean. And I definitely want to see a role reversal of this trope 🤣
Creative/hand drawn animation will always be light years ahead of generic 3D animation. That’s why this and Spider-Verse won Oscars.
I’m still furious that Disney sabotaged their own Treasure Planet, a top 3 film, then abandoned 2D animation to become essentially a subset of and indistinguishable to Pixar.
Although this is 3D, this is pretty good especially that it passes itself as 2D. This film is so ahead of it’s time.
I think no one is talking about Feast short.
It's creative actually to have a people relationship from perspective of little dog who loves food
I feel Meander (the technology used to make Paperman and its follow-up, Feast) is the future of animation.
I really liked your analysis on this Short! I always liked this one and thought it was so interesting, with the style and setting. I think it would be cool if you reviewed a short called "Feast". I like that one too, and found it powerful in a way, when I first watched it. But anyway, loved the video! :)
PAPERMAN!!!!! I LOVED SEEING IT
Oh wow! I never thought my comment would stand out. Thank you for the shout-out and thank you for covering this absolute classic! :D
Can people stop saying spiderverse was the first to do this type of integration
I'm so glad you made a video about my favorite short, paperman gave me chills as a kid and even to this day as an adult.
I remember there is a Spanish short film called 'Cuerdas' and I loved it! It was so emotional that I was actually crying
A Classic Short, definitely deserved all the Awards...😉... PS: You should check out Azul Sierra' reimagination of paperman's Film Scoring.. She is on UA-cam and her Film Scoring is really nice....👌
I actually used to beg my ma to put on that Disney playlist thing or whatever just so I could see paperman. I loved the art style (especially because I'm a 2D kinda artist and an artist in general) and I just really enjoyed it.!
I saw this from my art college back then and it looks cool. You can easily tell on how much work was done for this short.
I remember someone said this short was something Disney himself would have loved and been proud of
I love with my whole heart this short film, I went very deeply on animation because of this single animation, I love everything about it, and plus, I've never thought that Meg was a client, I thought she was there in a job interview, but well
THIS THING IS AMAZING! I wish that disney or another studio could bring back this kind of animation
This short is so beautiful. I have another to recommend to you. There is a short on Ryan And The Last Dragon called Us Actually. It’s a silent short about an elderly couple and dancing in the rain.
It’s just remarkable, Its the best way you can tell that story. The shots, illumination, expressiveness of the character designs and animation, pacing, music, wow. I am going to be amazed by this short every time i’ll watch it
Was I the only one who thought that George reminded me of Roger from 101 Dalmatians?
Man I love this short
You should review “in a heartbeat” next!
This is one of my favorite shorts, three others tie with it.
I know its late, but can I just gush out about how good this short looks? It seems like the proper use of cel shading. Like, I wish there were more Disney films in this style. Then again, we do have one coming soon, similarly.
I see this with Imagine dragons 'it's time' in the backgroun, fits surprisingly well
DUUUUDE I just watched this in my art class for the cross hatching / pointalism unit!
I love when he does these
Disney seriously needs to do more animated movies like paperman!
this was my favorite disney short when i was a little kid
this short was so good
can Dazz do a video on the OG animators please? :)
Hey Dazz, you should do a video on The Terrible "Ice Age: Collision Course". And also "The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild" (the newest one). In my opinion, the first movie is always the best. "The Meltdown" and "Dawn of the Dinosaurs" both have some flaws but are still good movies. "Continental Drift" is a shipwreck, it marks the beginning of the end of the franchise. "Collision Course" and the new Buck Wild movie (the worst ones) have melted the franchise since.
Buck wild (while I have not watched it) doesn’t even look finished. The animation isn’t nearly as good as it was in the past. It hasn’t been fully rendered yet, it looks like a test animation.
I saw this short on Koreus back then, the artstyle, ambiance.. it was unique and beautiful.
Disney never used this kind of animation, they went with those crappy live-action of re-telling the story of a villain, such as Malefecient and Cruella who didn’t needed any backstories.
To think that this and Wreck it Ralph would be 10 years old this year ;-;
Hey Dazz, have you thought about watching Get a Horse with Mickey Mouse from 2013? It’s nowhere near as artistically ambitious as Paperman with its Animation style, but it more than makes up for it as a tribute to Walt Disney’s early work!
You should totally do a video on, ahh, i think it was called "In a Heartbeat"? It's popular, but still it's nice
this is why the Oscars deeming animated films for children such nonsense
Idk if ur seeing this DazzReviews but I want to ask you a question can you give pikmin one last shot plz.
You should do KitBull it is one of my favorite shorts
Ok so, my recommendation would be... One Small Step, by TAIKO Studios. It's just... beautiful. I like it a lot
Nice video bro
I've seen this film right after watching wreck it Ralph, I was a small child and I was gonna take the DVD out after the movie but when paper man appeared on the screen I just kept watching it, if you didn't tell me about this short film I would've forgotten it
4:39 strange comment but the boss looks like senator armstrong
if you have time I saw a short on youtube called box assassin that was really good.
Can you do Us Again next? It’s really moving. Cheers.
Can you talk about Kaitou Joker?
Could you do Feast sometime?
And realisticly speaking: at 3.30 that is the end. They never see each other again and live goes on.
This was a pretty good short.
I love how the video is twice as long as the actual short
Mix Hiccup, Victor from Corpse Bride, and Fox Mulder and you have George
"what's your favorite Disney character?"
Me: *"Piece of paper"*
"..... what?"
yeah im also wondeirng why its only the boys who get hurt like when theres a girl and boy main character mostly in shorts movies and shows the boy is like a punching bag while the girl is always just getting everything good
i honestly forgor about this short💀
If we’re doing Disney and Pixar you should do the match girl
Would you create a video on the "Model Citizens".
Can you do Bao
The subscribe bit was hilarious
This short is wayy more influential than you actually highlight in here....this was the first CGI film that try to blend 2D traditional animation with CG....2 years after this ARC system works would use a similar tactic to do the acclaim game Guilty Gear XRD who blended 3D with 2D images for expressions and BGs, and years after Spiderverse revolutionize this to a whole new level and now this is the style that is starting to take fly on my length feature animated films, Mitchells vs the Machines, Bad Guys, Puss in Boots the Last Wish, the upcoming TMNT reboot film and on TV, Arcane League of Legends, even if no many claim this as an influence THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I ever watched this been done, so you can say is the start of this new innovated style that combine the best of 3D and 2D in one effective media.
maybe its just my eyes but meg really looks like agent carter for some reason
The Scene That CHANGED Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse
(It's the scene where (SPOILER ALERT) Peter Parker dies.)
I remember seeing this a while ago and I was astonished
Mixing stock footage in this was heresy but I understand
I remember watching this in school when I was in 6th grade.
Talk about dreamworks bad guys please
Can you do a review on the how to train your dragon movies
Cover "OUT" from disney+ and "LAVA" played after Moana(?)
Do fuelled
wait was Meg not going to a job interview? that's what i thought it was... the paper was her resume and she was in the building for the interview. was i reading that wrong?
Blue Umbrella
Is it just me or does George kind of resemble Dr Tenma from Monster?
I remember watching this short in 7th grade, I didn't know it was from Disney.
I was brutally rejected by a girl and got antagonized by her friends before watching this short and Wreck-It Ralph. Oh well. I'm destined to be single and lonely anyway. Still not ready to end my life yet, cos I've got things I want to do.
Fuck her and her friends. People like that don't matter. They DON'T deserve to have that impact on someone. Even after you finish the things you want to do you shouldn't by no means end your life. Life is something precious and as the saying says: "You only live once". I mean there are pretty cool things in life, you could find a hobby in something you HATED before. For me it was reading, like I couldn't stand reading before and now it's my favourite thing to do. If you decide to start reading I recommend the Percy Jackson book's, really fun if ur into mythology.
Also those poor excuses of human beings probably got hurt by someone else and they deserved it.
Actually Paperman is popular,i've seen alot of fanart or character from different movie/series being George and Meg in Paperman style. And i think this shouldn't be a movie,i think it's fine as a short films.
Did they change the music in the film?
I love this short
what happen to shrek reboot is cancelled?
