  • In this episode, we asked our Mexican moms to try Korean food 🇰🇷❤️
    Subscribe here! ua-cam.com/users/MaMahChanne...
They tried the most common and recognized Korean dishes and side dishes including, Tteokbokki, Kimbap, Danmuji, Bulgogi, Naengmyun, Japchae, and Kimchi!
Tteokbokki is a meal made of spicy rice cakes that is also very well-liked as street food. Although kimbap is frequently confused with sushi, its ingredients are fundamentally distinct. There are numerous uses for danmuji, a crunchy, acidic yellow pickled radish. A popular Korean meal made with barbecued beef is called bulgogi. It is a grilled beef meal that has been marinated and can be sweet or savory. It is frequently served with rice or other sides. An all-year-round favorite, naengmyun is a cold broth-based noodle dish that is extremely popular in the summer. A stir-fried noodle dish called japchae contains both meat and vegetables.

If you haven't already (assuming you're Mexican by the way you phrased your comment), I'd suggest introducing your parents to the food of the Philippines (I am biased as someone who is half Filipino). I am curious whether or not the influence of the countries' shared Spanish colonizers have led to similar tastes. My curiosity has been sparked by the realization that during the colonial period one of the main trade routes in the Spanish Empire was between the capitol of the Philippines, Manilla, and Acapulco.
Though just as a heads up, most Filipino food isn't inherently spicy though that depends on the region. Spice can be added but it isn't a main focal point.

    • @seenenough1200

No full blooded Korean, I phrased it like that because I regularly julienne kimchi into strips and fry it with thick bacon with a bit of Agave to make Kimchi Tacos, it's borrowing more heavily from the Mexican side. Comes out a bit more spicy than Al Pastor with a strong sweet and sour twist.

Fr but now I get why. It’s too hot to cook in the summertime. So, by just putting all the ingredients in a pot and walking away from the hot kitchen then coming back to the soup being done is the best for moms that are in charge of feeding the whole household. And not staying in the kitchen too long with the summer heat 😂

For those who didn't like kimchi when they tried it like these moms, I highly recommend you try it fresh when you get a chance. I'm willing to bet you'll change your mind. I've converted many friends and co workers by letting them try some of my mom's homemade fresh kimchi.

I think my favorite thing in the whole wide world when it comes to kimchi is the kimchi stew with the meat and sausage. Kimchee chigen, I think it’s called. That stuff is amazing in the winter. Mexican food feels less heavy than American food. Cilantro can really throw some Koreans (and anyone genetically predisposed to not liking it) off though. We regularly cook Mexican food and the Mexican meat market butchers cut ribs the same way. I actually like it better than a lot of Korean restaurants now. It seems Korean food has evolved to be more sweet than when I grew up there. There's also been a weird fascination with cheese and corn for a while now.

I remember trying kimchi at a Korean Festival in Houston, and it was so spicy I struggled to eat it. My eyes were 💦 A Korean lady looked at me and said “Damn, you’re brave not to pair it with meat or rice because we Koreans don’t even eat spicy kimchi by itself.” After that I learned. I love kimchi 😂😂

I'm not Korean, but I love eating kimchi alone. It has to be quite fresh kimchi, though, like during preparing it I snack on some or when it's up to few days old. Then I like it raw alone as snack or as one of toppings on open sandwiches (where I live open sandwiches are default type of sandwich and are eaten for breakfast and supper, only dinner is cooked and lunch is called second breakfast here, so also not cooked, but not everyone eats that, it depends on one's day schedule) and then as ramen / ramyun topping, finally when it's old and really sour, I make kimchi jjigae aka kimchi stew with it or other types of cooked meals. The recipe for kimchi I'm sticking to is by Maangchi, so it's authentic, I think.

I grew up calling Japchae, glass noodles. It was one of my favourite as a kid. I didn't even know the proper name until I was an adult, lol. I was always taught glass noodles. When I used to eat kimchi as a kid, we used to have a glass of water and dip the kimchi in the water before eating it. It took away some of the heat. I loved mixing the bulgogi juice you got when cooking the meat and then mixing that with your rice. OMG!!! So Delicious. They should have gotten them to try Gochochung too. I love taking Gochochung and mixing it all into your rice. The heat is so good and sometimes I would take a scoop of that mixed rice and take a plain piece of bread and put a dollop on the bread, fold it, and eat it.

  • @KingPinguofDingu

oh man, y'all should have told them to pop the entire kimbap in one bite. I died a little inside when I saw that they bit a piece of it. The entire point of a kimbap is to get all of the flavors together in one bite. But regardless, it's a well known fact that most Koreans love Mexican food, and all the Mexican people I've seen usually enjoy Korean food. Hence why a lot of Korean-Mexican fusion foods have been popping up for the last couple decades. The flavors just work well together.
