I found me a Dell Optiplex 9010 with a i7 3770 and 4GB's of RAM on LetGo for 90 bucks. I offered him $150 because he was far away and I couldn't travel, he threw in 16GB's of RAM and 120GB SSD!! Bought a GTX 1050Ti and now I can run all of my emulators with ease. Took a major risk with selling my current PC at the time for $300 bucks but it all worked out. Glad that videos like this helped me see the good in these old Dell PC's.
Thats really cool he threw in those extras for you! Now it seems the i7 9010 with no HDD or OS is 140$! With 4GB ram. They are difficult to even come across! I love the idea of using an old dell for this purpose so i have been on the lookout lately!
Nice! Now that I sold my beefy gaming PC, I figured I might want something to run games a bit casually that I can bring at friends house's, and this looks perfect! I mean it won't play Red Dead 2 at 4K High settings, but the most demanding game I want to run anyways is Witcher 3, and it has a pretty stable 60fps on 1080p medium. I messaged the guy selling on Craigslist this morning asking about 100$CAD for a ram-less 3010, and I hope it works!
I have Launchbox installed(thanks to you!) and it runs great on my i7-2600 (Non K) with an Evga 750ti 2gb SC gpu and 16gb of RAM @ 1600Mhz. Before I upgraded my DELL XPS 8300 to the aforementioned specs, it had an i5-2310 with 6gb RAM @ 1333Mhz and an Visiontek Radeon 6450 1gb GPU and Launchbox + all emus still worked good, too(not just for emulation either!)So it can run on even older machines than the one mentioned. BTW Thanks for all your vids! Ive learned alot about all- things-computers from you.
Love that you can buy a cheap computer and toss in a budget gpu that doesn't require external power. More powerful than a pi or Pandoras box for only a little more.
This isn't revolutionary nor is it something you can do on the cheap... He is very misleading when he says "cheap". #1 He received those towers for free #2 Good luck finding one on Craigslist for $50... and in good condition #3 forget Amazon because those systems are $400-$800 just for the tower #4 That leaves with you with a refurbished system from Ebay... which still costs a lot and hopefully you don't have to bid on it So factor in all your parts ... Tower ($200) + GPU ($200) + Shipping and Taxes = about $500 (probably more) One other thing he didn't take into consideration... the Idea of Retro Gaming is to have an all in one solution in your living room, hassle free and in a small package. Would you want this massive tower and all it's cables sitting in your living room? Anyone can build a retro gaming PC... Anyone.. But to do it for under $150 and have it fit in the palm of your hand? That's a true achievement.
mrvain221 1050s aren't $200, and you could actually run all these games, save GTA V high settings, with the $70 GT 1030. Also the tower is NOT $200 lol.
Well I guess that depends on where you live. I live in Canada so yes, they are $200+. Although U.S prices are not far behind. Also running GTA V has nothing to do with what we are talking about. We are talking about Retro Gaming. Believe it or not but running a Wii U Emulator or PS2 emulator on max settings is far more demanding than running that 2013 game 'designed' for PC... Those towers are expensive. Even in U.S prices (or wherever your from). How about this... build me a retro gaming system that does not exceed the size of a Raspberry Pi 3 (hell even a Gamecube) and have it cost less than $200. Oh... and it needs to be able to run PS2 games and Wii games no problem. Can't do it can you? It's because it's impossible right now. In order to emulate those systems (PS2, Wii, Wii U), you need a dedicated video card which means you need an actual computer. And again, that defeats the whole purpose of cheap and small.
Wow... you really need to learn to read more carefully... Anywhere in my posts did I say that the Pi 3 could run dolphin? I said to build me a retro gaming machine "that does not exceed the size of a Raspberry Pi 3" The Intel HD 520 is completely sufficient to do what exactly? Care to finish that sentence? I implore you to try and run Wii, PS2, Wii U and everything else under the sun solely on a Intel integrated GPU. Let me know how that works out for you ETA Prime's video isn't accurate when he says "cheap"... that's what I am pointing it out. I am also pointing out the fact that when most people (like myself and my friends who I have built Pi3 systems for) think of retro systems, they think of something that looks like a system and is also small enough to sit beside your other electronics near your TV in your living room. Not some old, clunky computer with tons of wires and shit.
Tekken Dark Resurrection is a port of Tekken 5 to the psp. Don't need a high end rig to do psp emulation, alot of games run fine a 1080p on intel hd graphics.
Doing an Dell OptiPlex build now, I'm upgrading the power supply, then adding a GTX1050ti (sounds like a Japanese car model) Haven't done a build in 10 years. Your video inspired me to go for it. Now I have use for that other monitor on my desk instead of my retropie. Not playing Goldeneye on the pi was killing me!
you are a great teacher of gaming not many mention that you do not need a pc of the present to be able to play good games or emulators with a somewhat cool but still powerful pc the best good video
Thanks to you, I just bought an Optiplex 9010 with an i7 from Ebay. I'm going to upgrade the ram to 16gb and throw in a small 1050i ti. I'm one happy camper, thanks man!
Refreshing to see a high value emulation/gaming rig getting spotlight, especially nowadays with modern higher end parts being marked up so much. Specifically SSD storage, DDR4 ram and GPUs :)
Nick Fomula you are the only person I have ever heard that has said that. it does not matter to you Win 10 is big and fat a like to spy on you all the time.
This is a great video. Hope to see some premade pcs with launchbox someday as the launchbox community grows and there are increasing pc hardware like these optiplex floating around.
dude free is always the best! Something special about making something awesome out of almost nothing or something that was worthless at some point. Recently I also picked up two free dells. Precision390 and this inspiron545. Both towers work and I have already put some upgrades into the inspiron. Picked up a 3ghz core duo for cheap and upgraded the cooler from extra parts I happened to have! I also plan on maxing out the ram to 8g on that tower. As for the precision, I see some potential for that machine too
Im using mine and playing mostly all games in PCSX2 with no Hiccups. Just a few in games like God of War & Some others. But, Its been working great. I havent really had time and dedication to recover all of my platforms I had on this new PC. But, One Day I will set my Launchbox/Bigbox Back up with the videos for all the games and everything.
Man these Optiplex models are like cockroaches. I went into my local PC dealer/reseller. I saw around 40 of these, and 22 of all other models combined. I can imagine these tend to pile up in many landfills across America. You saved a stray from being euthanized Prime, jolly good show.
Love seeing videos like this. Always glad to have something to show anti PC gamers. It does not cost 1000 dollars to have a decent gaming machine. Great work
I did this to a Optiplex 7010 with i7 that I got for $175. It didn't come with a HDD and had 4GB of ram. I added 32GB of Hyper Fury ram for $200 (overkill, I know), a 500GB 850 SSD for $120, and GTX 1050 TI OC Low Profile for $175. I'm mainly using it for emulation, but it can run anything.
Nice! I want to build a bar top arcade and I was thinking I should definitely go with gaming PC internals instead of raspberry pi! Nice to see a reason to up cycle an old Pc...
I have a Dell with an i5 2400 and an 1050 TI... And even Wii U Emulation works on it. With messing around a bit I even could get Breath of the Wild to run with 40-60 FPS in 1080p. (its a 30 FPS Game, so you play it at full speed with out problems) Needed some Tutorials for the settup but it works quite well.
i have this build but i put a 500w psu in it, (found the correct form factor on amazon) a 2tb hdd and a 256gb ssd. it plays all my indie steam games and 4k video with no issue... i love it and use it everyday on my tv
I wish gpu prices weren't so high right now, I got an optiplex 390 for free and i'd be willing to put money into it but the gpu aftermarket is just nuts right now.
I'm super in to Rpi and Linux so I love you mention Linux as a free alternative on emulating on pc. getting into emulation and it's So nice to se what possibility I have I resently gave a present to a friend witch Was a Rpi3b+ running Retro pi a made it after watching your video of it so mutch Tanx to you. Keep em coming.
Looking at the gpu usage you could easily bump up the resolution in the emulators. Some one else also said it but a cheeper lower power option is a gt 1030 for a brand new card, works really well.
I upgraded my 3010 sff to i7 3770, 16gb ram, gtx 1650, ssd and blu ray burner. It was cheaper and is more powerful than building a cheap mini itx system with an APU.
I decided to go with the 7010 SFF. has 2x 6GB/s Sata ports, one 3GB/s for DVD drive, 4x USB 3.0 ports. and plenty USB 2.0. 3010 only has SATA 2 and USB 2.0. However, to fit the MSI GTX 1050 TI in I had to cut a piece out of the 24 PIN ATX Connector, the card fits in without any issue now.
I just got an HP elite 3800 with 8gb ram, i5 3470, and a 1050 ti lp. I used my birthday to to improve the price by asking for Amazon gift cards. My old pc died and wasn't worth fixing seeing as it costs more than a new pc.
You did well. I'm still running roughly the similar tier PC (i5 2500 + 8gb + gtx 1060) after 7 years of purchasing it, and it has had no problems playing ANY game at 1080p / 60fps so far. Even with its previous GPU, the GTX 560ti, which I swapped for the 1060 just couple months ago.
John Dela Cruz Nice. I actually didn't know that I had 8 more gigs of ram in a drawer from my old pc that worked with it. So now I have 16gb of ram and it made a huge improvement!
Dub Monster Yeah it's cool because even though it doesn't meet the requirements it works great with vr as well. Good luck. Sorry your pc died like mine. It's a bad time to have to put together a gaming pc. 🙁
MobileDecay yeah, i'm planning to build system with AMD APU inside, Mini-ITX system in general. I will test fixing that non-working PSU tomorrow, see if the main fuse was the problem, and see if it killed whole system. If i can make it work it's gonna be HTPC
Mine is a Dell Optiplex 9010 SFF and the specs are... 3.40 GHz i5-3570 12GB DDR3 RAM GTX 1050 Ti LP (OVERCLOCKED) 1TB 7200RPM HDD WINDOWS 10 PRO These old business desktops are pretty good for gaming.
WARNING I had a Dell Optiplex 7010 SFF, it had a i5 3570, 16 GB of RAM, 250 GB SSD and a GTX 1050. It worked great, until my PSU exploded last Friday. A 240W PSU will fail eventually if you load it this much.
TheDominusGamer the one that exploded was a stock dell psu, de new one is a corsair vs650, 80+, 650w. I'll now be using it in my new AMD build what will be a Ryzen 5 1600, Asus Prime b350 plus, 16 GB of corsair Vengance 3000mhz DDR 4 and a RX 570 4 GB.
Pihkal82 In the UK shops sell a HP Pavilion Power 580-015na that comes with a GTX 1050 (non ti) paired with a 180 watt power supply. If manufacturers like HP are now pairing GPUs like the 1050 with low PSUs, surely a 240 watt will be enough?
Need to set yourself up with a nice RAID array. I've got faith in your ability to figure that out but if you want some advice from somebody who has done that a LOT hit me up.
I have a 3020 and a 7020 and both work well with the GT 1030 low profile. Fits just fine. I'd rather have the gtx 1050ti, but if you have an old 7020 or 3020, the GT 1030 will work just fine with most emulation. Gets a little choppy with CEMU or Rpcs3, but over time that will get better as the emulator improves.
Hello, I really enjoy your channel. I have learned so much about emulation. I think you should know, and I could be mistaken, but, the optiplex 3010 you have is a small form factor (ssf) case. The Dell specs for the 3010 pci-e slot x16 has a maximum wattage output of 50 watts for the ssf. The nvidia 1050ti requires 75 watts. Having a card only getting 50w and trying to pull 75w does not seem like a good idea. Google 'dell optiplex 1030 tech guide' and look under system expansion slots for ssf. Sorry, if this has already been mentioned.
if you wanted to use the newer, more powerful pc but the card did not fit you might look at a PICE 16X riser card. I know that Thermaltake makes a great one that Linustechtips used I think 6o0r 8 of them and was still getting max performance from an 1080
00:31 You got a machine with an i5-4590... FOR FREE!? How on earth? 03:00 And the other one too for less than $100? You have some insane luck. These CPUs are as powerful as a basic computer in stores. For $500+.
You know the ratchet and clank games arw fully playable with just little graphical glitches... In the newest developer build of this emulator you can enable mipmapping, i played through all of them, just the bloom effect in R&C 3 is buggy, its a bit of from where its supposed to be
For a really inexpensive emulation rig the Lenovo ThinkStation E32 model is going for dirt cheap right now, (also the S30 model). Often less then $100 US on ebay with shipping included. The E32 uses a Haswell E32xx v.3 Xeon or 4th gen core i5, i7. Some of the Xeon E32xx CPU are basically gen five core i7. Try to get one with a clock speed of 3.2 Ghz or better, because they are locked. Uses up to 32gb of DDR3 ECC memory! They usually come with a Quadro vid card and an extra 1gb network card, (sell them for some extra cash). I would stay away from the sellers that pull the storage drives out, try to get one that has a drive with Win 7 pro installed, and that has at least one screen shot of it working. I think the Lenovo is selling so cheap as most people are looking for the Dell and HP workstations. For the same prices that the Dell Optiplex sell on ebay of the same generation you get a much better build quality, with an enterprise power-supply. And, you can put a full size vid card into it.
I did similar to this recently with a 1050ti just in a beefier PC, set it up with BigBox Launcher v1.0.1 so no M&KB is required and happy days. Oh to people wanting to do this but save some £$£, A 2gb 750 ti would suffice for upto GC.
Idk in my country but i got hp z200 pc for $60 with all set (monitor, keyboard, and mouse) Pluses are it compatible with Xeon processor, small size like this (SFF), RAM can upgraded to 16gb, and actually pretty potential, you can backup BIOS settings to USB (because business office machine) Downsides are you'll have to get lucky to score one cheap (mine is office auction btw), and 240w PSU (SFF, standard ones are 300w-ish) so better go with GT 1030 (PSU cannot upgraded due to pinouts), and also not all of them are equal due to it can be custom ordered (good luck finding ones with higher specs)
i have to agree. the thought that you can find one of these on craigslist is really optimistic. If you can find it used on a site like that, yes it will be around that price but what city you live in plays a big part. otherwise you have to buy it off the internet and these systems still go for 3-400 dollars from ebay and big computer sellers. I got mine off a guy who leases computers to offices then sells them after they are returned. Got a quad core i5 haswell gen, with 6gbs of ram and a 128gb ssd, with all the oem accessories brand new (mouse, keyboard, speakers) for 150$. Threw in a 750ti and its a decent little gaming rig.
For emulation you’d be better off using the 3020 with a smaller video card. The graphics card basically doesn’t do much when emulating most stuff. I use an x3470 oc’d to 3.8ghz with and old 8800gts and it runs PS2 stuff even at crazy high resolution
I just purchased a Dell Precision t5500 Workstation with a Xeon X5675 6 core cpu from the x58/LGA 1366 Platform and a MSI GTX 1050 Low Profile. Because of the space and possible ventilation issues that I have read about with that particular PC. And I wanted a card that didn't require any PCI-E power cables and I know this particular machine has an 875W PSU and can handle higher end cards I just wanted to make stuff easier. And 16GB of DDR3 RAM Not sure of the speed. And this is going to be for all Emulation purposes. From NES to PS3.
I run Windows 10 x64 and an intel i5 3570k, 8GB DDR3 1600mhz, and a Radeon Gigabyte 7970 Ghz ed. 3GB and gamecube emulator runs immaculate and psp runs pretty good amd smooth, im yet to try the ps2 emulator
Dude i Use an Xbox 360 Rgh/Jtag with an external 500G Hardrive to amulate. Cheapest Rgh that iv seen for sale runs about $110 or so.. Plus you can play Xbox 360 Games downloaded of the internet as well as play online AND mod games on line Ex. Gra V and COD games... seems cheaper to me that a Pc

Nice! I want to build a bar top arcade and I was thinking I should definitely go with gaming PC internals instead of raspberry pi! Nice to see a reason to up cycle an old Pc...
definitely, a raspberry pi can probably emulate very old hardware but nothing like a ps2 and wii or 3ds or anything.
I have a Dell with an i5 2400 and an 1050 TI... And even Wii U Emulation works on it. With messing around a bit I even could get Breath of the Wild to run with 40-60 FPS in 1080p. (its a 30 FPS Game, so you play it at full speed with out problems)
Needed some Tutorials for the settup but it works quite well.
i have this build but i put a 500w psu in it, (found the correct form factor on amazon) a 2tb hdd and a 256gb ssd. it plays all my indie steam games and 4k video with no issue... i love it and use it everyday on my tv
Which psu did u get ?

Hey eta. I bought a skull canyon, still haven't had time to configure it. Lol. I appreciate your videos.
My skull canyon has been a little workhorse.
I wish gpu prices weren't so high right now, I got an optiplex 390 for free and i'd be willing to put money into it but the gpu aftermarket is just nuts right now.
Yes that Dell Optiplex is worth it!
You could use a PCIe x16 Riser-cable adapter for fitting the GTX 1050 ti into the Optiplex 3020.
Keep up the great work man!
MobileDecay you got good deal probably. My pc died too and it's too old to fix
3.40 GHz i5-3570
12GB DDR3 RAM
GTX 1050 Ti LP (OVERCLOCKED)
1TB 7200RPM HDD
WINDOWS 10 PRO
These old business desktops are pretty good for gaming.
You using the stock power supply? 240 watts?
WARNING
I had a Dell Optiplex 7010 SFF, it had a i5 3570, 16 GB of RAM, 250 GB SSD and a GTX 1050.
It worked great, until my PSU exploded last Friday.
A 240W PSU will fail eventually if you load it this much.
Killer Keemstar just realize power supplies can catch on fire and burn your house down .
Killer Keemstar sadly yes, replaced the PSU but no boot...
Was it 80+?
250W is not enough anyway for all of that
TheDominusGamer the one that exploded was a stock dell psu, de new one is a corsair vs650, 80+, 650w.
How about CEMU & Wii performance?
Testing in my next video. I lost all my games in a hard drive crash. I did have Bayonetta 2 and it ran at 50-60 fps
Was it ssd or spinning that you lost everything on?
Need to set yourself up with a nice RAID array. I've got faith in your ability to figure that out but if you want some advice from somebody who has done that a LOT hit me up.
I use a i5 2500 16gb ram 1050ti. Cemu runs great(botw/mk8)
With the cost of large capacity NAS drives these days its very affordable to just have two and do a manual backup from one to the other one a month.
WOW that Big Box boot up is like the sexiest thing I ever saw
You can play ratchet perfectly with the latest pcsx2 dev build if you enable basic mipmapping
I have 8Gb ram, i5 cpu, an evga1050ti and a MSI H110M Motherboard. CEMU runs great.
Honestly think ETA prime is the best emu youtuber!! Great vid. Are you going to do a Citra/launch box guide anytime soon?
Same setup here with 12 gb of ram and emulation is greate .
Lenovo thinkcentre edge
Core i7 3770s
16gb ddr3 1886mhz
Full solid state.
Msi aero gtx1070 mounted vertically.
Total cost $360.
All thanks to you.
Hello,
I really enjoy your channel.
Sorry, if this has already been mentioned.
nice video.ivy bridge is good enough, i still using my i5 2300 from the release date. still beast LOL
U can get an APU build for under $300 a small case and run all the emulation games at max settings over 60 fps
I need that, hopefully i can get one soon
I actually tried to emulate Windwaker on an Nvidia G105M and it gave me 10 - 15 FPS.
not bad for it's time.
Lmao, my setup happens to be an i3-3220 Optiplex 3010 with a 1050TI. Mine has a bulky case and could fit a full gpu
if you wanted to use the newer, more powerful pc but the card did not fit you might look at a PICE 16X riser card. I know that Thermaltake makes a great one that Linustechtips used I think 6o0r 8 of them and was still getting max performance from an 1080
I had the same issue with the 3020. Shame on the pci slot placement
Now I know what to do with my older system sitting in the closet.
Do not sit in the closet while working on a computer, ventilation is recommended.
Recently built an amd 1500x with a 1050ti I already had 8gigs of ram and an ssd with a 3tb drive for launchbox and my steam games
00:31 You got a machine with an i5-4590... FOR FREE!? How on earth?
03:00 And the other one too for less than $100? You have some insane luck. These CPUs are as powerful as a basic computer in stores. For $500+.
i did this with a dell optiplex 790. i7-2600, 16GB DDR3 and the MSI 1050ti OC version, 85fps on GTA 5 @ 900p/max settings
You know the ratchet and clank games arw fully playable with just little graphical glitches... In the newest developer build of this emulator you can enable mipmapping, i played through all of them, just the bloom effect in R&C 3 is buggy, its a bit of from where its supposed to be
Fits in your pocket too!
Awesome video so helpful many thanks
Wonderful!!
Like and suscribed! :D
Any updates on this build? How did the PSU and GPU hold up? What are your temps like?
I did similar to this recently with a 1050ti just in a beefier PC, set it up with BigBox Launcher v1.0.1 so no M&KB is required and happy days. Oh to people wanting to do this but save some £$£, A 2gb 750 ti would suffice for upto GC.
cheap??
here in Brasil it is around 300-350 USD for only the Dell, plus around 200-300 for a GPU like a 1050
Raimar Lunardi in India too
Idk in my country but i got hp z200 pc for $60 with all set (monitor, keyboard, and mouse)
Pluses are it compatible with Xeon processor, small size like this (SFF), RAM can upgraded to 16gb, and actually pretty potential, you can backup BIOS settings to USB (because business office machine)
Downsides are you'll have to get lucky to score one cheap (mine is office auction btw), and 240w PSU (SFF, standard ones are 300w-ish) so better go with GT 1030 (PSU cannot upgraded due to pinouts), and also not all of them are equal due to it can be custom ordered (good luck finding ones with higher specs)
sucks to be yall lol
i have to agree. the thought that you can find one of these on craigslist is really optimistic.
I need a cheep gaming pc!
Hey ETA which theme are you using for launch box?
So what would you say is your daily go to? This, your RetroPie, or other? What do you find yourself going to when you want to play some games?
Which $4 dongle are you using for Xbox 360 Controller! Please tell Me
What software are you using? The interface looks so cool!
Isn’t it weird that companies don’t make graphics cards with the cooler on the right side instead of the left side
It could definently play wii u. My MacBook pro can do wii u well and the graphics card isn't that good either
For emulation you’d be better off using the 3020 with a smaller video card. The graphics card basically doesn’t do much when emulating most stuff. I use an x3470 oc’d to 3.8ghz with and old 8800gts and it runs PS2 stuff even at crazy high resolution
Checkout college surplus sales, I just a few days ago got a i5 9010 sff for 15$
I just purchased a Dell Precision t5500 Workstation with a Xeon X5675 6 core cpu from the x58/LGA 1366 Platform and a MSI GTX 1050 Low Profile.
I did this with a 3020, only had a single slot PCIE 16 so had to use the GT 1030.
Optiplex 3020
i5-4590 3.3ghz
8GB DDR3
GT 1030
Lenovo m78 with A6-6500b $50 RX 5 240 $12 can play all this just fine even Wii u and ps2.
Never had an issue with the power supply until it fails and takes half the system with it....its a risk you run
Keep it cool, eyeball the capacitors
PPSSPP looks good man.
Don't think you'd be able to do much in terms of higher resolution on ps2 though.
Ratchet and clank games require mipmapping emulation, you can download user builds and get it
I run Windows 10 x64 and an intel i5 3570k, 8GB DDR3 1600mhz, and a Radeon Gigabyte 7970 Ghz ed.
I know this is an old video now but.. I'm looking at the Soul calibur GC.. it's mentioned that the FPS is 60.. and sure enough.. it says say on the readout....
But this does differently not look 60...
