Ooooh, but the smocking addition on the Petite Knit cardigan is absolutely brilliant! My mind is blown! May I say that it is a true joy to be connecting with you two this morning. You have resparked my excitement to get started on a new project! May I add that you are truly adding joy to my life and a smile to my face! It's very comforting to tune in to your program. I am more than happy to support you on Patreon. Way to go, girls! Episode 144!! Woot woot!!
Extra loving comment 🥰 Although you are a fall, I do believe, Madeleine, from what I can see on this mac screen, that you would look absolutely radiant in this pretty shade of rose-mauve. Now, I do apologize if I have made parting from this garment slighly more difficult 😚😋
Thank you for introducing me to this amazing technique of smocking. ❤I was mesmerized by all different ways that she applied it to change the look of the knits.
Absolutely inspiring, Andrea and Madeleine! Every time I see a new episode I think the last one cannot be topped, and you do it again with such wonderful, inspiring guests. I really want to try the smocking and the slipped stitch technique on sweaters from children’s to adult size. I simply loved beautiful ensembles that Melanie shared! Thank you! ❤❤❤
The yellow cardigan is beautiful! With that colour, mother of pearl buttons would look gorgeous! Happy weekend :) I love it when you post a new episode ❤
1:16:52 that yellow cardigan is STUNNING! When it was on the hanger in the background I didn't realize it was knitted. It looked like a sewn blouse. And the dress that goes with it! Swoon! Loved this episode!
Eggshell buttons on Andrea’s "soft chick" cardigan! Madeleine, you are a wit. And quick. Love the show, the great techniques, and the lovely interaction between mom and daughter.
Wow, my eyes where sparkling with excitement just like yours, Andrea! So much inspiring elegance to mull over. Thank you so much for interviewing Melanie.
Always the BEST knitting pod !! - and this one I especially enjoyed - love the needlework/knitting combination and have always thought smocking a wonderful 'invention' !! Thanks Andrea and Madeleine
Although I know how to knit, I usually crochet because it's so much faster. These amazing techniques make me want to pick up my needles and try some of them out! This video was a revelation!!❤
Great episode, as always. My lazy idea for the identification of the smocking lines is to put in a lifeline in each row as you do the knitting. It can be hard to see the individual rows of stitching after the fact, so I'd cheat and do it when it's easily visible. Your two projects both look WONDERFUL!
Absolutly LOVE the smocking on the hem and sleeve of Andrea's new sweater. The smocked/couched vest is awesome and love the techiques. I've sewn for years but learned so many new tricks from your interview with Melonie. Thank you so very much
Thank you for providing such interesting content! I am inspired by Melanie to find a way to merge both my sewing and knitting projects into harmonious outfits. I will definitely rewatch this podcast!
Lovely...I Have sewn since I was about 8yrs old, then had wonderful sew teacher when in my 30's..love the combinations of sew, knit and crochet fabulous!
Another excellent episode…. Melanie is amazing! What talent! I love what your are doing to the little yellow cardigan wow bravo to both of you! Such extraordinary knitting 🧶 ❤❤❤❤❤
I always thought of smocking being for baby garments. Wow! What a revelation this has been. I'm almost ready to return to my knitting and sewing life and this has opened all sorts of design ideas for me. Thank you so much Andrea. HUgs
Honestly, I fell in love with Melanie. Real artist and her smocking is an eye-opening technique. Very inspiring. And I just remembered that my aunt, who made three dresses for me when I was going to kindergarten at the age of six, used this exact technique to beautify them. Poland, 83, there are no nice things in stores, but now that I think about it, it was the last time I had real haute couture dresses 😅
Wonderful program. 🤗 I always love to see what you are working on and am inspired to make many of them too.Thank you so much for your continued efforts to bring us so many new ideas and talented people! I love the idea of combining smocking with knitting that Melanie Sharle shared and look forward to getting one of her copies of The Valiant Tailoress when it’s reprinted! I’ve really got to stay productive as long as I can, many things on my to do list.
I've been knitting and smocking for 30+ years but I've never combined them. I'm totally inspired by this episode! I just ordered the beautiful Valiant Tailoress and her smocking guide. Thank you!
I sew, so I loved this episode! I am already booked up for 2025, otherwise I would love to attend your retreat. I really hope you offer this again in 2026!
I loved all the smocking 😍 I recently made the Jenny jacket and fell in love with the smocking stitch. I absolutely love what Andrea has done to her April cardigan! So pretty ❤
LOL loved Andrea's constant idea lightbulbs going on during the interview! What a brilliant collection of techniques. Already plotting some welted potholders to get started.
Another brilliant episode. So much knowledge and talent. I just love the idea of making sustainable and beautiful out fits. Will need to rematch this one again.
absolutely brilliant episode A&M!!! thank you so much - as someone who loves all three crafts I found this utterly inspiring - now I'm off to stalk all of Melanie's designs!
What a marvellous episode!! The smocking technique is a true game changer for a very timid knitter like myself. I’m a crocheter through and through, but I do know the basics of knitting. I don’t bother knitting though, because I get so bored or frustrated. Whereas crochet holds my attention and because I know it so well, I can problem solve and customise on the fly. Using the smocking technique gives me options to knit basic patterns but embellish and fit them much more easily!
Another wonderful and intriguing episode! I've purchased the Valiant Tailoress's brochure on smocking, and am looking forward to playing with these techniques. Thank you for the introduction to Melanie Scharle!
Lovely episode! I still have a smocked party dress my aunt made for me in the early 90s in my wardrobe. It obviously doesn't fit me anymore but there is so much effort and detail that I am keeping it for future generations. I just finished knitting a sock using a smocking stitch as well. It looks quite complex but was surprisingly easy to do once I got into it.
This episode is spectacular! I knit and crochet. No interest in sewing. Still, the creativity, imagination and stunning beauty of the designs of Melanie of The Valiant Tailoress blow my mind! I love process. This episode truly is spectacular!
Both of your cardigans are amazing! I used the patreon coupon to buy the magazine!! I can't wait to get it shipped to the USA. Thank you both - love your podcast and I love being a patreon member!!
Haven't watched this episode yet. It sounds soooo interesting. Just also wanted to say I absolutely LOVE the sound of the knitting retreat. Although this time I will have exceptional family responsibilities at that time which will prevent me from attending. But PLEASE..... when you have the time and energy, would love to go to a knitting retreat. It doesn't have to be exactly the same, although Costa Rica sounds divine.....Npw to watch......
21.48 I thought exactly the same things Andrea, recalling the episode when Andrew discussed the spreadsheet that calculated his total sts knitted. Thank you both for another quality episode.
Oh wow, I've learn so much watching this episode ! 💛 I just begin to sew, and i was looking for a designer like this 🤩Thanks a lot for this episode and your work (being a Patreon is definitely worth it 😘)
Watching this as I work on my Gell (design by Sarah Solomon) which features a "mini smocking stitch" pattern. I am straight up obsessed with the designs for the Venice collection! I can't wait to see it all, and I hope they come in larger sizes because I'm hoping to make several of them.
Thank you so much for this episode, can you please share the petit knit cardigan pattern and the pattern for the purple cardigan with the smoking stitch in the knitting, thank you 😊
how do you manage to knit so many things to show us each month I love knitting but I have become unwell and struggle to make any patterns with complicated stitch patterns in them you both have really good tension
Great episode. Yes, I can tell a sewer who also knits and crochets. I am also one of them. Sewers do apply the skill to their knit designs. I did like the pearls with the smocking - with the right yarn, and design, it makes a design look so elegant.
Fabulous episode. As a prolific stitcher, who loves the rhythm of simple knitting (and with limited knitting skills), the addition of smocking opens up so many possibilities to enhance the design. I wonder how the stitching is started. With a knot or most likely I think a tail to be woven in?
Andrea, I think anything you would do for class on the Pura Vida trip would be great. I personally would love to see how to weave in the ends for a Marie Wallin design or one like it. I love all her designs but would love to convert them from top down or make them all in the round. I lack the confidence to do it. Perhaps you could do something that incorporates some of those aspects.
I can say that learning knitting garments was easier because I already knew how to sew and knit socks. I don't mean beginner sewing. I sew stretchy fabric. I was not shy about cutting into my first sweater to fix something, and then I grafted it back together. My 2nd knitwear is a knit flat in peices. I cast it on the same time as the other one, but it's taken longer because ... cotton. I gained weight while working on it. No big deal. I'll knit some godet panels and assemble it to add some more ease. Cotton is unforgiving. If I lose weight later, I'll take it in. Maybe with smocking since I think I'll be wishing the cotton was more elastic. Or I could cut out the godot and reset it together. I have used crochet to lengthen my daughter's shorts if she grew taller but not thicker. I prefer knitting, but I can crochet small items. Anything big doesn't hold my attention.
I am so thrilled to see smocking or “couching” in knitting. So many possibilities and even for children’s boutique wares! I really appreciate the professional content that you ladies out out. I always learn a great deal and my book list keeps growing. So many patterns and ideas and so little time! Thank you!
“Could get eggshell buttons.” Good one, Madeleine. lol 🐣

Ahhh, Madeleine reminded me so much of Andrew, counting the smocked sts! ❤Loved that. Beautiful projects, both! 🤩
Mom may see mud but I’m with you Madeleine - those colors do work together . To each her own.
Thank you for introducing me to this amazing technique of smocking. ❤I was mesmerized by all different ways that she applied it to change the look of the knits.
This episode is hands down my favorite. I am so excited to try all of these techniques!! The possibilities are endless!!!
That’s saying a lot!!!
Wow! What an incredible episode. I am blown away by these designs. Thanks Andrea and Madeleine for bringing these techniques to your viewers.
That‘s absolute my opinion. Thank you both very much.

Melanie is a creative and talented lady! Thank you for sharing this with us.

Smocking!! Who knew, this has been enlightening 😮😊
Great inspiration, well done. Enjoyed on a rainy cold day in Canada.

Hello from Swansea, Illinois.

Is there pattern for the brick red slip stitch short sleeve cardi you wore in 2nd interview please ?..think could try that to start. ...❤❤❤❤
I'm interested too! Thanks. Beutiful episode

Smocking was also created for adding thickness for wear and warmth.
