Never got to play the old maps. It sucks because i used to watch Anthomnia play on those maps( his vids hyped me for the game alot back then) before I got the game around late 2018. All the exciting stuff disappeared at that point. I've played from 2018 on wards. I stopped around early last year. Playing a deserted version of a game, with so much of its old content eradicated with no hope of improvment doesn't encourage one to keep playing.

The only thing keeping me from switching back to legacy is Ptera since not only is he my favorite Mesozoic animal and the easiest animal to play, but also that I get to live out my fantasies of looking at dinosaurs at a safe distance without getting KOSed. I also get to appreciate the map because there isn't a bush in my face while flying in the sky.

      1. Quetzalcoatolus was for a while available on Legacy on a handful of DEV and test environment servers. I actually managed to play as one multiple times. In hindsight, the implementation was quite bad, but it was a lot of fun at the time.
      2. Quetzalcoatolus has - at least to my knowledge - not been confirmed for EVRIMA. That being said, I think it is pretty likely to make a return, as the old model and animations were already quite good, and it would make a great addition to the EVRIMA roster.
      3. Just FYI, Quetzalcoatolus is not a dinosaur, and it sure as hell ain't no bird, but as an archosaur, it is of course somewhat closely related to them.

A lot of people have some serious nostalgia glasses on. I play the Isle since early 2016 and i admit, I had much fun in the earlier versions. But the fun memories are mostly the ones staying. Thinking back it was literally just a boring dinosaur chatroom with almost no mechanics.
While it still is laggy and buggy, it was waaaaayyyy worse back then. Rubberbanding, broken hitboxes, rubbish netcode were on another level. Fighting was impossible at times. Not to mention that fighting was boring as fuck and didn't take any skill.
I personally also found the earlier maps like V2 eye cancer, don't know why so many people liked them. The bigger roster also doesn't mean anything if every dino feels the same. I'd take 8 (and still counting) unique animals over 30 who are basically just reskins.
The movement also feels way smoother with turning animations, momentum and sliding.
The most important thing i think is that you can actually have fun as juveniles in Evrima. You actually have a chance of hiding or running away thanks to the foliage and there are plenty other juvie dinos to fight. You can boost your growth and don't have to sit still to have a chance. Also while mix- and megapacking still occurs, it is nowhere near as bad as in legacy.
I could go on and on but i think this is enough. I dunno, I just can't understand how people don't think that Evrima is superior in pretty much every way (except maybe performance). But to everyone their own I guess.

More than half the people playing The Isle actually are in Legacy. Let's be honest here.
      Where is the progression?
7 months for a single Update 5, which contains skin system, nesting and... what?
Just think about it, doesn't matter how good the "skin system" or "nesting" is going to be, 7 months time is ridiculous for game development. They need more coders, more people, more DIRECTION. And some are probably thinking "but more updates will come", yes, perhaps after 2, 3, 5 years? Nonsense, in my opinion.

I'm surprised that you went for comparing the quality of the dinosaur calls and animations since you decided that graphics and visuals would be too subjective to compare. The same can be argued for calls and animations. Ultimately those aspects can always be tweaked later if needed, as many dinosaurs had changed over the course of Legacy's life cycle such as Allo, which has had 3 different sets of models and animations and tweaks to calls, and Rex which I believe has had... 4? different models? I've lost count. Utah, Carno, Sucho, Stego, Pachy, Maia, Dibble, Dryo, Galli, all of those creatures received tweaks to their aesthetic qualities over the course of Legacy, but you didn't mention that. I think it's unfair to conclude that Evrima's dinosaur aesthetic qualities are inferior when the devs took so long to figure out Legacy's own.
I also think that dinosaur calls highlight your lack of in-depth research, one of the mechanics you forgot to list was dinosaur calls changing in quality as a dinosaur depletes their stamina. The effect you mentioned where a call becomes muffled is exactly what happens when a dinosaur is tired. I noticed your stamina bar was missing about 1/3 of the total stamina when calling as a pachy, which would start to make your calls more breath-y as a result. That feature also telegraphs information to the attacker which we would never have a way of knowing previously, how much stamina does your prey have left. You can estimate how tired they are by how they sound when they call out. I think that's pretty neat.
Criticisms aside, this was another very entertaining video. Your editing and writing is always top notch. It's sad though to see you conclude that "we already lost the best" at the end when Legacy was always destined to fail. One of the biggest reasons it was failing to deliver a quality experience was the first thing you pointed out that you claimed makes it better, the roster size. The over-bloated roster size crippled development and set a horrible precedent for the quality of dinosaurs and lead to a cascade of playables that added so little in quality compared to Evrima's roster. Unique mechanics alone that the Evrima playables possess provide the development a great base to iterate on to make the game more dynamic than Legacy could ever have became. When you say we already lost the best in Legacy, you're saying Evrima will never measure up to it, that developing Evrima is pointless. I whole heartedly respect what you love about Legacy. I loved those things too once. It was a home for me, where I've made so many memories and friends. There are better things on the horizon though.
With the release of update 5, nesting and skin customization will be released. If we look at the mechanics that you listed that are unique to Legacy, that will leave only Global Chat and Replays. I don't mention Dinosaur Sexes because Evrima already has that, as well as dimorphism with model differences. Global Chat will never be coming back because it interferes with the experience intended for the game, and Replays may never return to official servers because of the possibility for exploitation, it is yet to be seen. All in all, Evrima will have surpassed Legacy in its intended features and will continue to go from there, and I'm excited for that.
I was going to leave a thumbs down, but after writing this I've changed my mind. This is a good video, I just have some disagreements with your conclusions. Keep up the great work!

      @iamandyFEARME 2 роки тому +32

In addition to this, I should say that everything you mentioned regarding performance was true. It continues to be the biggest complaint amongst players.
I also want to say that while Evrima has a greater depth of mechanics, I shouldn't leave out what Legacy can offer. The playables in Legacy may be shallow in individual complexity, but their sheer quantity and stat differences, as well as aesthetic variety do provide a richness that Evrima has yet to achieve, though I think we aren't far off from that same feeling.
Something I forgot to include was that in the development roadmap for Evrima they have uncoupled playables from strictly releasing in updates as originally planned, and many dinos that we previously weren't expecting for 5 more updates are being slated and teased for release in the near future because their individual development speed is outpacing the feature updates.

I have some things to say about this video, firstly I don't think you should've included the sandbox dinosaurs from legacy in the roster. They were barebones and not up to the same standard as the dinosaurs actually made for survival. Also, legacy has NO semi-aquatics. Spinosaurus, Baryonyx, Suchomimus were all slow swimmers and showed no real variation from other regular terrestrial dinosaurs. There were no fish in legacy for them to eat within water, nothing about their implementation included an aquatic lifestyle. For the map section... have you played on isla spiro recently? They've gotten rid of about half the forests on the map and replaced most of it with plains. For the mechanics, dino gender is in Evrima it just has no impact since nesting isn't in, but that falls under the nesting category anyway. If you're referring to sexual dimorphism, then Legacy doesn't even have that. Also day/night cycle was forgotten for both, night vision forgotten for legacy, and you COULD include rolling in mud for Evrima but thats not really important and could be considered apart of the bleed system. (Although it does more than just stop bleed). Okay for your point about 2017 Isle and it's number of playables, are you forgetting that the only thing differentiating them was their model, animations, roars and stats. Evrima actually releases every playable as unique with a unique set of abilties and niches. Half the animals released in 2017 Isle were effectively duplicates. Legacy was a steaming pile of shit, I'm fucking glad we lost it because it was never going to be improved. I'd take a product actively being worked on over one that is not any day.

That still doesn't make erivma looks superior, by the simple fact that it takes too long to them to patch glitches and the FPS problem Were supposed to have been fixed YEARS AGO, they not only are taking too much time into dinossaurs that they forgot entirely of nesting and dino customization, which now every other game that was inspired by the isle have it. Not to mention that Erivma is pretty much dead all the time compared to Legacy, not only because server management is worse but because most players can't load in the map, and the lack of dinossaurs to play make it somewhat repetitive. Legacy did had alot of reskins but there were servers that would implement different ways of playing with each dinossaur and how they interact with other players, realism servers are rare in Erivma, And why they think that having a realistic Utah and a normal one is a good idea? Isn't that a reskin as well?

I'll just make one small point here, because I *do* actually agree with most of your point:
There is actually sexual dimorphism in legacy among some of the dinosaur species. Male dinosaurs have access to certain patterns of bright colors that females do not have, as the males would require them for display purposes.

So I have a few arguments against some points made in the video but I wanna preface it by saying on a subjective level I completely understand everything you’ve said and are feeling during this video and to a degree I especially agree with the closing statement of “it doesn’t matter, because we already lost the best,” however it was also that line that told me this was a purely opinion based video.
See my biggest issue with this vod was not the idea behind it but rather that over the course of it a lot of the points put against EVRIMA had only been taken at the base value and not at a deeper level like overall quality. Biggest example is the roster segment, yes Legacy has in total more animals however remember that a decent majority of those animals never made it to legacies intended official game mode survival without the use of admin commands which should have been a factor and that on a design level several of isle legacy’s animal were copy paste remakes of another. In legacy almost every animals experience was identical to another, I’ll make an example, in legacy picking between utah and carno was only choosing wether you wanted jumping and tighter turns or more speed and raw damage. In legacy stego was a glass cannon who ran down most things swinging wildly until either it or everything else died. In legacy Pachy was Utah without bleed. The “semi aquatics” of legacy aren’t actually semi aquatic, they just have more stamina than the rest of the roster meaning they can sit in the deeper segments of water longer. In EVRIMA every animal has been crafted to be a unique experience, picking between Utah and Carno is now picking between a quick and nimble human sized animal who relies on pursuing targets over a long time pressuring them with numbers and bleed until they drop or a decently sized decently powerful ambush predator that relies on its speed, ramming ability, and power to lunge from hiding knock down its prey and finish the kill quickly with some well aimed bites or to get a few in and then create distance with its speed to either prep another charge or do multiple quick hit and runs to the head to finish the job. In EVRIMA stego isn’t a pursuit glass cannon it’s a walking wall of meat that isn’t very fast but is deadly strong and requires precise planned movements to kill. Deinosuchus is the isles first and only true semi aquatic as it has full range over the water being able to move on the x, y, and z axis while in the water and has three mechanics, two of which are unique to it, that give it even further superiority in the water, that being the ability to fish, the ability to see movement ques in the water, and the ability to lunch from the water, grab onto, and drown other animals. I’d also argue that Ptera has been the isles only true flyer, Quetz was never officially released into the isle and required either admin commands or enabling the “test build” setting on servers during its time on the isle, it lacked any true air control or flight mechanics like air speed via sprinting in the air or slowing down with a breaking mechanic, stamina consumption in flight when taking off gaining altitude or when sprint flying, you couldn’t even land as a quetz once you became airborn without purposefully crashing into the ground and hoping the game didn’t kill you, not to mention Ptera has collision allowing it to make mid air collisions and subsequently it has a mechanic where if you have enough stamina you can recover from the collision and continue flying. Overall on an in-depth level I’d argue EVRIMA has the roster point as more does not always mean better.
In another point, let’s talk about maps. The footage of the gameplay on the isla spero map appears to be out of date as the most current version of the map has cut out a large majority of the foliage around the map and have added much more defined roads around the map in the form of rivers that connect the whole island, this change wasn’t just a buff for Deinosuchus it gave more defined roads to every animal because as long as you can find water you can find your way around the entire map, by your definition in your map video this should make isla spero far better than the previous maps. But then again, one’s personal feelings towards a map is subjective and those subjective feelings will continue to bleed through, such is the way of things.
Speaking of subjectives, I believe you made a massive mistake in making audio and animations a deciding factor in this video, as there is no objective way to separate those two. If you had to do this objectively you would only be able to compare if the animations are smooth and do not have any choppiness or model errors, and if the sounds played correctly when they are supposed to, and in that instance Legacy and EVRIMA are tied in their survival rosters only, but legacy is riddled with de synced audio and odd model errors in animations, such as everything about alberto or Maia’s tail suddenly turning blocky or that ambience in legacy is constant and universal no matter where on the map you are, where as in EVRIMA none of the models display any visual issues when in motion and ambient noises such as birds or waterfalls only play when you are in the trees or near a waterfall respectively, otherwise it tends to be idle wind and yes all ambient sounds except for waterfalls do lower in EVRIMA when ANY animal uses their broadcast. Now subjectively I have to agree that utahs walk and trot animations and carno’s sprinting animations are definitely downgraded from their Legacy versions, however I disagree on the sound design department, I think the new sounds are fine, and I especially love the Pachy and Stegos new sounds as the Pachy sounds more ragged and primal while the stego sounds larger and more bewildering (in a good sense, likes it’s a mythical creature) in EVRIMA. But that is MY opinion.
Honestly I think you should have forgone the discussion of animation and sound for the discussion of graphics as that has more objective marks you can compare, are there any visual bugs in the lighting or textures like flashing shadows or something not having the proper texture mappings applied, the presence or absence of “god rays” or minor transparency in things (such as being able to see light through a stegosaurus plates when it’s in direct sunlight or light through a leaf on a bush if it’s directly under the sun), can the difference between day and night be broken by changing some individual settings in a persons game or on their PC, does the grass have shadows, how far away must you be before an item will either de spawn, turn into a low quality distance variant, or spawn in, such as how the trees in EVRIMA turn into cardboard cutouts when you are decently far away and don’t de spawn until you are essentially on the opposite side of the map where as foliage in legacy only de spawns and is inconsistent on when something will de spawn or spawn in. Now I agree with your argument that some people take graphics as a subjective, I think TF2 looks better than say primal carnage or overwatch because despite being objectively weaker it’s overall design philosophy is far superior but objectively you could have used graphics as an argument and I believe without a shadow of doubt EVRIMA would have won that point.
Now I’ve sat here trumpeting EVRIMA, and on an objective level I will always stand by the notion that EVRIMA is better than any and every prior version of the isle, but on a subjective level I can understand why those first 630 days of legacy hold so much more value than the current 630+ days of EVRIMA, back then the isle was new and exciting. Back then the isle was something we had never seen before but had been the dream of dinosaur game lovers for years and in those first 630 days they had shoveled anything and everything they could arguably call content into our hungry mouths without giving any of it any direct or intricate thought, and it was exciting. EVRIMA might be objectively better but now we are so saturated with Dinosaur games and have been basically conditioned to believe that more = better that EVRIMA doesn’t elicit that same spark of joy and excitement so easily, and it does in a way hurt, because I really wish it did.

"Glass cannon" is a perfect description for Legacy stego. And you're right about many of the dinos not making the official roster. I played pachy a couple of times on Legacy and wondered why I was bothering. They were so easily killable. Evrima pachy? Total bonking terror! I love how strong the herbis are in Evrima. I think once nesting comes in, an entire new dimension will be added to the playing experience. Even though I have almost 2,000 hours in the game, combining Legacy and Evrima time, I'm still a sucky fighter and like the nonfighting play better. So I'm especially looking forward to nesting. And also to the reintroduction of dino AI, another thing Evrima will likely handle much better than Legacy. I enjoyed hunting speedy little dryos through the woods.

As for the map, you forgot the totally useless and annoying rocks you continuously stub your toes on in Legacy. While Legacy has the advantage of having more hotspots, so far I like the Evrima map better. The Evrima stego is a huge improvement over the Legacy stego, as is the pachy. The mechanics of being able to crack open coconuts is a lot of fun. Skimming for fish with ptera is also fun. Some men are tall others shorter then the average woman. Humans are naturally very fluid in our representations of male and female since we are an intellectually educated race. Well, we can't blame the devs for one thing. The reason why they left legacy is because they couldn't even work on it anymore, A employee messed up a certain code that made it uncodable anymore so they got lazy and Made evrima. But they didn't just remove legacy because I guess they wanted they're players to be able to play a working version as they we're still working on evrima. But I do want to blame the devs for changing everything in evrima animations roars, etc.

I really miss the old legacy maps. They were a lot more beautiful and creative. I remember drinking as a hypo rex across from another one in the Redwoods. Another time i remeber playing as a Hypo rex, calmly walking down a gaint waterfalls cliff down to these beautiful pools where Utah raptors gathered around a rock. I loved these moments so much, but then they completely stopped me from playing as the hypo and going on these maps. It lost so much of that fun spark from the beginning. Now the Evirma map is a mess :)

Broadcasting in Beasts of Bermuda (Other really fun dino game) feels pretty bad as T-Rex, the sound design is something they need to fix.

I like them both. Legacy's biggest flex is the variety of species (relax, I said species not mechanics). Evrima of course has more to offer in terms of mechanics and balance. From dominating anything with a Rex or a Shant, to flying around and pecking annoying carnos. By a narrow margin I like legacy better just because of the dino roster.
Side note: I HATE the seemingly endless number of fallen logs throughout Spiro... Navigating through legacy jungles with apexes was tough enough to rocks and the occasional tight tree group, but nothing annoys me more than Spiro and the clear deforestation going on

Thing about region 2 is that it’s smaller map and you can find people easily, along with that the places are interesting and diverse, which lets people know the map like the back of their hand. Clearly the devs don’t see the game from the player’s perspective, only theirs, the game is just a playground for them to throw experimental toys about and cheat, while the players play the poor man’s toys and just watch them cheat and do nothing about it

This scares me honestly.. The fact that Evrima's map is only 1/4 of the size available now and they plan to release the full thing soon... The world feels empty with what we have now and 100 players... How is it going to feel with 3/4 more space and similair amount of players? (even if they bump it to 200 that's nearlly not enough..
The game needs alot of A.I... Good A.I, not those boars, frogs and lambs that wait to be slaughtered.. dinosaur A.I that will run, fight back and defend itself..

Bravo! Great video and well done.
I have to disagree on a few things. I dont think the number of dinos matter as much as the the uniqueness of each, and that definitely goes to Envrima for me. The 2016 isle you reference is something they could definitely do again. Copy paste all the dinos just altering the base stats but then they bottle neck themselves again. Its a mistake they will not do again. They will get the systems right first then add dinos as they are ready.
Honestly, I can only imagine the struggle with being a content creator for The Isle. It has been a crazy ride but I definitely feel the silver lining is coming. When update 5 hits and they start dropping a few more dinos to broaden the roster even more, that feeling will return. When we get this map that Jace is working on in secret, that feeling will return.
Hold fast my fellow dino nerds, we are almost through the storm and we shall enjoy our time in The Isle once more!
    (Love your videos!)

Nah the best time to play The Isle was right after launch. That first map was small but fucking good with memorable landmarks. No broken bones, no bleeding, stellar performance (you could really run it even on a Casio calculator from 1986 and still have 60+ fps), dinos had funky and exploitable movement pattern which made it fun to PvP (also very little lag and hits actually registered reliably). Neon bright carnos chasing raptors between legs of longnecks (Puertasaurus) and dodging their back kicks just for fun, croco-rexes ambushing from below water.... those were the times.

Hmm. I finally got around to playing Evrima last week. It's a lot of fun when it's working. Other times, the audio is a distorted, stuttering, ear-shattering mess. Other times it sounds like everything is right up your ear, while other times it sounds like they're across the map. The optimization has apparently gotten a lot better recently, and it's definitely playable for the most part now. On lowest graphic settings. Upon close inspection, I think my game looks worse than Legacy. Objectively worse, that is. But that doesn't bother me too much, because when the audio is sometimes working, the atmosphere is unbelievable. Beats Legacy 100%. Again, when it's working properly.... Can't stress that enough. I love Legacy, and I'm really starting to love Evrima too. I really need to make it so I have both of them on my computer at all times.

Its hard to do a video ljke this without using opinions.... thats basically what it comes down to is one persons opinion using what data they have to make those opinions. Im definitely coming from a different place as I came in when evrima was already here so I really only played on legacy for a (relatively) short time. I do agree with alot of what you say... but I disagree on other points. Doesnt mean your points are "wrong"... just I have a different view on them. The legacy roster is big for sure.... but really whats the difference between playing all those? The addition of diets and the very different fightibg styles to me mean more than the sheer number of dinos. But for people who have put alot if time in legacy the likelyhood of having attachments to specific (or multiple) dinos is a very real point in legacys favour.
So my takeaway from this video is I dont agree with everything said here.... but I love it nonetheless as a real look into the differences in how these two different games have evolved 🙂
I just hope to eventually be able to see a day when evrima pulls ahead of legacy in your opinion XZaguer... I think it will happen *soon... so anywhere in the next 5 years 🤪

  • @sc2sc286
    @sc2sc286 2 роки тому

one thing youre overlooking when comparing the rosters is the legacy dinos are more similar to each other as they dont have special abilities and semi aquatics arent really semi aquatics. also forget about proper night + night vision in legacy. animations and sounds are also subjective, imo the legacy utah just looks and feels wonky and weird same goes for carno anims, they were just too stiff. Map Design can also be subjective in at least some ways and legacy ones had plenty of issues as well.can definitely agree on the roars tho. and when you compare the current to old legacy..yes it had more but everything was of much lower quality from UI&Graphics to the uniqueness of each dino and the performance of the game theres a reason why people never really went back to progression when survival came out which was kind of the "new phase of the game" back then.

Can I just make a point here; what Legacy had was a bit jumbled; the combat was pretty lame (phasing through targets, no collision yadda yadda) but another thing is that Evrima has given players what they wanted. Back when I was on legacy discord servers everyone and their dog wanted a more realistic version of the game, and that's what the devs did with evrima. It feels like nobodies happy even when they get what they want. It's far from a perfect game but I feel evrima has made substantial improvements where it counts. I do have to agree with your point about the Carno and Utah animations feeling a bit slippy and cartoonish.
Aside from that, I would never go back to legacy. The only thing I miss is being an Allo, feeling fast and powerful
Edit: I also miss the diversity of dinos and the playstyles that came with them, each felt so unique. And the grouping system and the pack experiences were one of a kind. I'd never trade that in

TBF graphics should be a discussion, simply for people with lower end computers. Good luck trying to play evrima even on lowest settings if your rig isnt up to snuff, lowering the settings to min wont cut it. While in legacy you could lower them and actually feel the difference in fps. So in that way graphics and their settings directly impact performance of the game, you can make legacy run pretty damn good, while evrima still derpy af. Seems like they spent more time detailing the plants and rocks than they did optimizing the game imo.
