  • I recently bought an old favourite amplifier that was tatty and decided to give it a full makeover and you would not believe how good this amp looks now. Its easy if you are shown how to do it and I take you through this TSL100 (JCM 2000) amp from start to finish.
    I always wanted to have a red Marshall amp and I have never seen this model in red so I decided to refurbish the amp and replace tubes, knobs, feet, handles, back cover and corners etc. It cost me about £100 ($150) to do it all and the amp looks absolutely as new! Worth the effort check it out.

    Tony, what a great job you did. You are correct, the correct glue is key to getting it done well and staying put. I've done several and each time you learn something new and get better. The only problem I noticed is that the right vent was lifting from the levant revealing a small gap. It's very nit picky but is distracting to the eye. When, I've encountered that problem I'll add a small piece of levant to the inside edge which creates a tighter interference fit.

    • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  5 років тому

      Thanks for that tip... seemed the vent also can distort a little on this amp from the heat. But great fix and thanks for mentioning it! Yes that glue really is the secret ingredient.... Thanks.

    Looks amazing! Like it came straight from the custom shop. I'll be doing this to a Marshall SV 20watt head and 1x12 Cab I got dirt cheap off a friend after he left it too close to a charcoal BBQ and totally melted the side. Thanks!

      Yes certainly a good thing to do and not really that difficult overall... the glue is IMO critical and the wrong glue will make it hard to solve later problems (I learned form experience the hard way).. Ha Marshall are really good at that stuff agreed and amazing to watch. Thanks for watching...

    Hey Tony!
    I bought a used JCM 2000 for pretty cheap off Reverb, it had been toured with and painted over, but the faceplate is in pristine condition, so the chassis needs to be recovered. I have some red tolex and all brand new Marshall corners, vents, and handle ready to go. I’ve done several cabinets this year so my tolex skills should be pretty sharp.
    I needed this video to see how you take the old pieces off. Thank you as always for your knowledge and guidance. Your channel is a treasure trove of knowledge for these niche topics.

    Hey Tony! I watched this whole video, it’s amazing. I’ve got a nasty looking JCM 900 that I’d love to make “new”. Here’s my “want”... I want to “Stealth” it! All black. Here’s the hardest part though, do you know where I can find a black JCM 900 chassis front cover? If you look at the newer jcm800 studio stealth that’s what I’d love to do.
    My tech just got the amp up to speed, now it’s time to make it handsome.

    • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  2 роки тому

      That will be hard to find... maybe someone like Zilla could create one... or if you're in the UK ask Marshall themselves... they are not unhelpful in my experience. Glad you liked this. I completed mine in about 5 hours or so... make sure you use the right glue!

      @@tonymckenzieofficial yessir! I’m in the states. I actually started yesterday. I’ve pulled off the old tolex, the heat gun helped so much but now I have to remove the glue. I’ve been scraping it and using an Orbital Sander which makes it simple. Once that’s done I’ll use wood filler to clean it up. Then I’ll start the tolex! I ended up getting a dark wine red color. Appreciate the reply!

      @@tonymckenzieofficial I completed it! :) I must say, the hardest and most annoying part was removing the glue from the box. An orbital sander really helped with that though.
      As for my Tolex, I really don’t like the job I did on the corners, I might’ve used to much material which made it hard to get the correct cut. I’ve got leftover material so I might practice again on another old amp :) I just wasn’t sure where to really cut the corners, so some of the wood is showing on the bottom lip where the chassis sits.

      Sure does but only when you've done the beating up. I hate those "Road Worn" axes it's dishonest and it makes the owner look ridiculous. You see an eighteen year old with what looks like a battered old '57 Strat or a 1956 Les Paul. It looks ridiculous, just do the math the guitar is 47 years old and it's almost 30 years older than the kid playing it. He couldn't have knocked it around that badly in eight years, assuming he started playing at age 10.

    • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  7 років тому +6

      Honestly, I think the 'road worn' guitar stuff is a carbuncle on common sense. It's a marketing idea to charge even more for what are often overpriced guitars in the first place and some brands are simply 'pushing' that idea until it will one day dry up the money tree. Good luck to them but it's unlikely I would EVER buy one of those. As you say, we can knock our own gear around if we want to :) actually though I look after my gear and hate even a scratch.

      @tonymckenzieofficial  7 років тому

      I had a TSL60 also at one stage. I was recording a guy who bought in a TSL100 and it was a slightly different tone and 'feel' to the amp so I bought the TSL and used it for some time. In any case, I have a near finished video showing how to fix the TSL (JCM2000 series) and DSL series with later boards for anyone who get in to problems... I also show the biasing etc. and that video review replaces the main board and shows the reasoning why. All good amps for sure, but if you have an early board they can be trouble as you will see in my review... watch the channel for that. Thanks for watching.

    Once I finally fixed the foot switch jack (what a nightmare) - I think the TSL100 is a remarkable sounding amplifier. Running that amp on the Red Channel into Celestion V30s and Celestion G12K-100s just sounds remarkable.

    • @tonymckenzieofficial

      Yes they did have an issue with the footswitch socket on the board. I'm not sure if I ever mentioned that. I used a TSL100 on a track called 'Metropolis' (search for it) and the sounds I achieved match anything out there - one really great amp and they can sell here for so little. I used stock Marshall cabs with GH75 (I think that's what they are called). Thanks for commenting your experience with the TSL100 too - appreciated. Thanks for watching.

    Hey Tony. Thanks for showing how to apply tolex. I have an extra challenge to ask you "how to?" I build a JTM45 but didn't buy the cabinet made by Mojo tone. Have you build any cabinets? What wood is good for this model. Those KT66 tubes makes the inside pretty warm. It also looks cool with just chassis, transformers and tubes, but it is fragile. Do you have any cabinet buildings videos? Enjoy your spring across the sea. Steffen Denmark

    • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  6 років тому

      Honestly I did NOT make the cabinet... Indeed I also made a JTM45 (a cream one you will occasionally see in the videos). I bought the cab from tubeampdoctor who imported it from the USA here: www.tubeampdoctor.com/en/shop_Speakers_Cabinets_Amp_Cabinets/ but they are expensive and I can understand you making the cabinet. They use Baltic Birch plywood usually to make the carcass, strengthen up with 1x1 wood, fit the front and screw the back to the 1x1. Then cover it... I saw Marshall sanding down the cab when I visited them here: ua-cam.com/video/WeerxAO3oRU/v-deo.html so you might pick up some info on that video. Hope it helps.

    Hi Tony, I like your reviews, they are really in depth. I was hoping to see this one finished as I was really amazed by the JVM-JS head sound and was hoping to hear TSL as a comparison. Since it isn't, would it be a problem for you to elaborate in few words what it is that is different about TSL 60 from TSL 100? I can't really find that info online. JVM seems to be like a hot rodded 800 platform. How would TSL60 compare?

    • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  8 років тому

      +Frostensen I had a 60w version some time ago before the 100 watt. It is NOT the volume that bothered me on either amp as there was plenty of that around. The tone was different on the 60w model. It's hard to explain why really... all I can say is that when I had the 60w a friend (great guitarist) told me that the 60w was 'cr*p' and that I should get the 100w version of the TSL. While I still had the 60w he came to the studio with a band to record and bought his 100 TSL with him (it was stock). His sounded really good and mine never did have 'that' sound. So after all of that later I sold the 60w and bought the 100w version. Side by side they are different in tone, feel and shall I say headroom. Strangely enough that 'headroom' bit I mention affected the whole amp (or so it seems to me). Either amp can play at lower volumes so the choice simply became 'did I want to sound like him' or did I wan the 60w ... I chose to change it for the 100w in the end and glad I was in doing that. Many say that the TSL is not very good and sounds this or sounds that... but I can tell you for recording with a decent microphone in the studio I have never achieved a better sound than I did with the TSL100. The JVM-JS head is completely different. The Satch head has the ability to really do it all whereas the TSL100 can do rock and clean (but not as clean as the Satch head). Think of the TSL as the step before the JVM410H (first model) and the Satch head. The Satch head is a JCM800 + + more whereas the TSL is similar to a regular JCM but with more drive. But I make no reservations whatsoever about recording a complete album on the TSL100. It was awesome - hence I bought the one in this video but it was tatty (what did I want for £300 or so?) and I decided to show how to recover one. I still have this amp and it is used often, but you do have to spend a little bit of time getting 'your' tone whereas the Satch amp just has it no matter what you do. Hope it helps.

      +tonymckenziecom Thanks for the prompt reply. Very helpful. I was eying a TSL 602 combo since JCM800s are very pricey, hoping it can get those tones, but as it's a bit far away I'm gathering as much info on it. I guess I'll pass, too many people have too many bad things to say about TSL60. Thanks again and rock on :)

    • @tonymckenzieofficial

      The white piping is simply stapled to the case assembly as indeed Marshall themselves did originally. It's not too hard to complete this work if you use the right glues! and decent tolex. Hope it helps and thanks for watching.

    Nice Work Tony!!! BTW, Can you please tell me what is the material that Marshall puts on the faceplate of their heads? Is it actual speaker grill material? I ask because I need to replace the old torn up one on my Marshall(MOSFET) head. I already took off the piping(& it's millions of staples... Yikes!) and removed the old material. I know I could use a diff material but I really want it to look stock. Thanks so much

      Yes I had an original that I used to write a track called Metropolis on and it was and remains since 2005 still the best lead guitar tone I have ever recorded... the TSL100 is an incredible amp. When I bought one second user it was tatty, so I made it look nice (at least to me) and created this video.
      But also I was chatting with Steve (someone I was discussing amps with) and he was telling me about early amp problems of the TSL100. I checked it all out and saw that amps with early boards really did have pretty major problems with the main board and the bias 'running away' then zapping the tubes.
      My amp was made in 2005 so probably OK but I decided to check the latest on those issues so I can make a video about it all. The latest and best revision of the main PCB is revision 20 and that solves basically everything regarding those earlier boards. Indeed, I might even have a revision 20 in my amp, but that matters not, I bought a rev. 20 board and am going to change that in a video on my channel. Now if I have an earlier board then that's OK and I'll upgrade, but even if it's rev.20 I'll swap it out on the video regardless. :)
      But for anyone that owns a TSL100 (and I believe the same/similar board was used on some DSL's then the video should be very useful. I won't be selling the TSL any time soon and am glad to get one back while the prices are so low in the second user market.
      Thanks for watching and watch for that TSL board change video as it should be interesting (even if I already have the latest board)...

      Yes it was not that hard to do. I would always recommend new corners (if the amp has them) and absolutely the right glue. I tried to buy some more recently from tubeampdoctor.com but it was not available... let's hope it gets restocked, because that is the best tolex glue I have ever seen. It leaves no bubbles or anything like that and keeps the tolex on there really well. I still have the amp in that red. I did this on a Sunday morning and it took about three or four hours but so worth while. Thanks for watching.

    Thank you for a great video Tony and for some very good tips that came in handy when I recovered my Cornford Roadhouse 30. Bye the way, what was it that you were going to come back and say about the glue @44:56?

    • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  4 роки тому

      The glue is really the secret to a great amp recovering. I used tube amp doctor glue on this recover. However, since then I have also used a 3M glue the '3M Scotchweld Fastbond 30 1LTR' which appears to be very similar - also water based! My opinion is that they are probably the same glue. Using glues that are regular contact adhesive never worked for me (EVO Stick etc) but this glue is really good. You DO need to have a roller (like I used) to roll the material really flat and also follow the instructions carefully because otherwise it might well not stay down. I recently recovered a Bogner amp in purple (its in one of the videos) and believe it or not I had to recover it again! it lifted. I believe that the tolex I used was not that great and I did not use the roller. I later used USA bronco sort of tolex and that went on perfectly and has stayed on. It all goes to show that ANY short cuts on this stuff absolutely do not work. This amp has remained spot on. Thanks and I hope this all helps.

    • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  6 років тому

      There generally are rust spots or what looks like breakdown of the coating that Marshall use to stop the chassis from rusting. I did have some, but I used a simple wire brush to get rid of the worst and I often then clean the chassis itself (very carefully) with some wd40 which seems to stop the rust coming back. Obviously be careful.... T

    • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  6 років тому +1

      Ha Danny... you sound just like me! Heat guns are very useful. I use mine for the heat shrink stuff to tidy up or as a protective shield on joints in the amp. If you ever make something like the Ceriatone HRM (Dumble clone) they tend to use the heat shrink on one end of shielded cable to stop shorts, but the shield the other end goes to ground thus creating a really good reduction in hum from the wiring. You might know this already... but just in case you did not. Careful now... don't sizzle the dining table with it! :) Nearest I got was the cloth :)

    So if I dont have a template to trace out, do you reccomend doing basically the same thing, and just figuring out the cuts as I go? I have several amps to do, but just really nervous I wont be able to do the cuts right. Maybe Im overthinking it?

    • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  4 роки тому +1

      HI James... well I had nothing to work it out from either... just remove the old stuff and preserve it so that it can be a template like I did. Trust me on this it does work! Go very slow on the corners... but if it screws up you can get the corner covers anyway and it would still look good :) The recent Bogner I completed in purple was hard because there are no corner covers whatsoever. James, the biggest secret to it... honestly is two things... a really sharp knife and the correct glue. Wrong glue and you will end up doing it again with the right glue. The first one I ever covered I 'listened to others on forums' and used impact adhesive (you know the sort) and what happens is this. At first its all good and you pat yourself on the back for a great job. Give it about a week and you start to see 'bubbles' appearing... then again, and again and... they keep coming back forever and its the glue. The stuff I showed or other specialised glue is the ONLY proper answer to getting things right. Hope some of this helps... and stay safe and indoors right now.

So this video got me thinking, When I get the available funds to do so, I might just have a look at getting one of those used, and make a shell for it, and rather then re-covering it in tolex as you've done here, I'll hit the plywood with some primer after sanding it smooth, and give it a white and Orange swirl paint job with a clear coat finish! Not completely unlike the Steve Vai Passion And Warfare Universe, but with the Orange amps colour scheme. Find a way to secure the amp inside without the top cage that comes on those amps, make a front panel in the Marshall Style with some Black piping and a back panel with some vents on the back and top of the shell itself in Marshall Style. Swirl the Front and Back panels attached to the shell to get a continuous swirl paint job. Then get a Handle for it, some Marshall style knobs as the Orange knobs are varying sizes and don't fit in the aesthetic I'm thinking of, and a acrylic Orange amps logo made for the Front panel.
    Depending on how long the weather lasts before the dreaded Canadian winter strikes again, this might be my little project for later this year or next spring.
    Cheers mate!

      Brandon Adams I've got a friend who made an Orange head shell too. They do look good if done right. Your idea on the head sounds cool I never thought of that. Interesting and I know those head cabinets do look cool... my mates was really cool and they can be done. Thanks for watching Brandon... and you have my sympathy on those Canadian snow times :)

    Hi....you look it make simple but still think you have a wonderful virtue with a pair of hands made it with gold, I prefer that you do it and pay what those 4 hours of work are worth and not run the risk of it being badly finished....Congratulation you do a great job Mr.McKenzie

      Hi Mario (not sure which name :) actually I understand your comments... and you know what, I had only ever refinished one amp previously and it was not a pretty sight!.. The reason that I (or we) failed was so simple. It was by using the wrong glue. When you do that, it will bubble up over and over again even if you get of the bubbles they come back.
      But not with the glue I showed on this video. By using that exact glue, everything goes on like a dream. It was the singular biggest thing I learned from this video as I made it. And the result even to this day remains perfect.
      Ha I know what you mean and I can do things with my hands - I have always had an ability like that, but this is not beyond the means of most guys. But the right glue will make a wonderful job!
      Thanks Mario for watching this... I watched it later and was as surprised as you were when it all worked out :)

    How did you put the amp badge on? Did you use adhesive?

    Great job Tony, it's a dirty job but there is nothing quite like a cool coloured Marshall.

      Well that's a real compliment from you guys - Zilla Cabs are great stuff. Yes I agree, the difference between a before and after amp (like this one was) is incredible. I did this one on a lazy Sunday morning :). Thanks.

      @@tonymckenzieofficial no problem at all mate. I'm a sucker for a good looking Marshall, it is what got me in to this game!

      @@ZillaCabs Well you stay with it - you do a very good job far better than anything I could ever do really. I bought this amp pretty tatty, with a problematic main board (I swapped the board for a new latest version) and the refinish makes it look great. Many knock the JCM2000 (TSL100) but I used it extensively some years ago and in the studio it was really a brilliant sound. Thanks...

    Too many knobs I'd get confused but as Tony said he likes this TSL100 it's all subjective I guess.. I have a JTM30 2x10. Once you sort out the design faults they are great. The JCM 800 is a great amp some say their last decent amp but I guess it's all about what pleases us the most. Looks nice though the red is great well done.

      I have loads of amps from Marshall and many others covering from the early 70's to current stuff. I know what you mean about the knobs, but the JVM410H has even more! My take on the knob thing is its more about how the amp sounds really. The TSL100 of all the amps I have ever recorded with for a released finished piece of music had the best sound I ever achieved from any amp - even now years after the original recording I can't get better tones than from the TSL100 (even using the very same cab). The JCM800 IS a great amp also but Marshall have made very many great amps and a few 'duds' along the way. I was surprised with the silver jubilee reissue head - that has some really great tones just a little different than the JCM800 'sister' (or brother :) amp. I recently reviewed the silver jubilee on an inside and out review - it's on my channel. Thanks for watching.
