Gave this a go yesterday on course. Had to hit a soft high pitch shot off a tightly mown collection area green side. Was a weird setup because it was wet and could have easily chunked it even though it would normally be very firm there. I had played with this a little the day this video came out and decided to give it a try. Opened up the clubface to activate the bounce, applied this grip, and it perfectly bruised the turf without digging at all. Ball went up, one hopped and stopped on about a 15 yard pitch leaving 3 feet for a par putt. It was the shot I needed, there was too much slope in front for a bump and run and anything short would have come right back. Great tip!
Steve, this Hoviland grip is a brilliant tip. I have been having problems with chips for a while, but today I employed this grip change and relaxed my body and went 8 out of 8 chips within three feet on my round. Your teaching style always works for me. Thank you! Dan, Lincoln, California.
I love this tip! A few months ago I strengthened my grip for all shots. Both the left and right hand. First time out with this, on the first hole at my home course, I had a short pitch over a bunker and decided to weaken my right hand but leave the left hand strong. It just felt right. It was a blind shot but I heard the ball hit the pin. It went in! Next hole, I was faced with a similar shot but with no bunker. Same grip. Same result! This time I got to see it go in. Back to back chip-ins! That was cool! But I thought the grip and results were just a fluke. Did not know it was an actual technique. Now I know why it works and will utilize this. Thank you Steve.. and Viktor!
Steve! I was having a very hard time chipping. Thinning and hitting fat. I used this tip and I was chipping like a pro today!!! This WORKS! 56* and 52* have 10* of bounce
Totally underrated channel and teacher. Common sense, easy to understand. I use your drills helping a lot of the oldies at my home club. Just getting them to make an easy consistent swing without the bullshit. Keep up the great work.
Not exaggerating when I say this tip was golf life changing. After years of fighting the leading edge I can't believe how simple and effective this tip works. It's like a huge weight is off of me around the greens now. Thank you so much!!
A++++ tip. I watched this video 10 minutes ago then I went to my front yard and tried it with my 54*8* bounce and I hit ten shots and everyone was close to perfect!!! I love the tips that actually work!!!
Hi Steve I have just come in from the garden after thinking about this method I decided to try left hand weak and right hand strong to my amazement it worked a dream. Your method also worked but I found the other way more comfortable. Give my way ago and see what you think. Thanks again Steve from Geordie Tim.
And here I thought I invented something. Very good information. I experimented with different set ups with minimal success until one day I stumbled into this grip purely by accident. I now use for all my clubs.
My friends noticed the changes in my swing today and ball striking impressed them. I told them I was an advocate of Eureka golf swing giving you the plaudits for my improvements made. I would imagine this would be positive feedback so you are informed of this action. I will work on them to join your channel on u-tube to spread the word of your ability to engage with golfers
Three rounds since English golf has returned, this has been a revelation! It just works, few little practice swings to get the speed and ground contact worked out and boom! Holed out for birdie with a twitchy little lob wedge from 20 ft being the best result. Works all the way up to 50 yard pitches so far for me
Hi Steve, I used to be amazing with my shortgame and am really bad lately, fatting and thinning anything from 50yards in. This video reminded me that a change I made was that I had this exact grip with all my shots and had a major fading problem, but that was the time my shortgame was good. I changed my grip to more neutral with a weaker left hand and stronger right hand... I can't wait to go and do this with my shortgame and see if FINALLY this was the reason I lost my confidence.
Tried this at the range today..what a difference in flight and control..a real gamechanger. I had always focused on having a weak left grip for short approach shots..not any more. Thanks Steve!
Another gem of a tip. Clearly explained and demonstrated. I have tried it and found it to be highly effective. Why didn't anyone tell me about this before? Thanks a million Steve.
Smart tip. I also like the added notion off chipping with higher hands so that the heel of the club is a tiny bit off the ground. This deliberate toe strike has greatly improved my consistency. Thanks Steve for the fine videos.
Hi Steve, In my opinion this must be one of your best ever videos ... can’t wait to give it a go .... I just know it will work for me! Best wishes Bill
@@johnmartin4332 all depends what type of shot you are playing? Open the face up for a cut up shot but you still use the bounce John. Just practice in your back garden if you have a lawn to feel the bounce working on the back edge, Steve explains the bounce in the video 👍
@@peterlund6495 thanks for the quick response. I've been opening the face slightly for normal pitches to engage bounce, but this method sounds easier. Again thanks
Nice little pearl of wisdom there Steve, butterfly grip for chipping and pitching. Only 17 days until we can get back on the courses (which will be packed to the brim).
I actually have seen this before, but I personally am not a fan of regripping, as you have to train towards a completely different feeling. The discussion from 4:50 onward however is really good!
I have always gone extremely weak with both hands (and leave a lot of chips/pitches short). Cannot wait to try this approach and see if it is for me! Thanks!
Totally agree with Nickm113 such great straightforward easy to take this info to the course, which i will be doing on the 29th...can't wait going to need lots more vids from you, keep going
I had a real problem with ‘digging’. So I thought if a weak grip is bad for driver, it could be good with wedge, keeping the bounce activated. It has worked wonders. However this extra idea could be the cherry on the top. Will try it out on Saturday.
Steve, what a brilliant chipping video. I have never thought of changing my grip for chipping. I will be working on this now. Thank you very much sir👍👍⛳️🏌️🇨🇦
Thank man! I’ll try it tomorrow. Just know- I heard it from you. Not Leadbetter. I subscribe to your channel. Not Leadbetter’s. You may not get credit for creating it. But you get a big thanks for spreading the word!
Interesting Steve as in the winter I get it - but on dry summer fairways it will lift leading edge surely and will cause a thin won’t it? In summer I use a 4 degree 60 wedge hardly any bounce - think this will give me issues?
Steve: Seems as if you keep your upper arms snug to your body and propel the club with body turn and passive wrist hinge - unhinge. Is that your preferred method ??? Do you dissuade a more armsie separated technique. Does it matter? Will either work equally as well? Maybe a video discussing this issue would be helpful. Love the butterfly grip tip. Can’t wait to give it a serious try. Many Thanks, Rick in Chicago
Great Lesson Steve! Love this! Can watch you chip and pitch all day! 😊👏
Steve Johnston is a brilliant instructor for all levels! Thank you Steve.

Such an underrated channel mate, love your straightforward approach with much less jump cuts in your videos than certain other UA-camrs
Jack Nicklaus said this in Golf My Way. It's a wonderful tip, and proven at the highest levels. Thanks Steve!

Even for for full swings?
Tried this today, works really well. Find myself concentrating only on rhythm and not face of club. Top pro tip, thanks Steve
I have no idea why your channel is not bigger.
You’ve got a great way of explaining things.

Thanks Iain, that’s brilliant 👏🏻👍
I ve been hitting perfect plastic balls into the kitchen just bruising the carpet with the bounce in the hallway. Best tip ever! Thanks
Also good for bunkers too , saw Pete Cowan advocating this grip for sand play ...using the bounce

Tried this... particularly turning right hand left (slightly of course!) and it does what Steve says!

This change in my short game grip has drastically changed my short game strike and feel. Way better strike and feel. Brilliant!
My short game is pathetic so I tried it this past weekend. Wow, it really works! Thanks Steve and Victor.
I actually use that grip for short putts, 4 feet and less. It has helped me hole more short putts.

Love this. I tend to take small divots or some chunks☹️👏
Nice one, will give this a go..... Chilli dips and cocktails... brilliant!
This is the best tip ever .
This grip is known as the butterfly grip. It does work. Thanks for sharing.
Great video Steve Pete Cowen calls it his Butterfly grip and he knows a thing or two keep them coming cheers
Great tip. Leadbetter calls this the butterfly grip used in his A swing.
Great Teaching video. Thanks i have also tried to open the face or twist the club to get the ball to fly higher and stop quicker.
Smart tip. I also like the added notion off chipping with higher hands so that the heel of the club is a tiny bit off the ground. This deliberate toe strike has greatly improved my consistency. Thanks Steve for the fine videos.
Hi Steve
This tip is brilliant. Used on the course yesterday, chipped in for birdie on a par three.
Enjoy your videos!
Thanks again,
Victor
Great video, very informative, will go out and try it.
Great stuff Steve,
Cheers Stephen
Thanks Steve, great tip.
You have the most entertaining tips in the internet!!!
I’ve been playing for 35 years. Never seen this. Thank you
Pete Cowen talks about this as well. mostly for bunker shots. Love it
Thankyou Steve. I am off to check how much bounce I have on my wedges.
golfing today, will utilize this tip.. what is there to lose... not chipping good now, why not try it, it looks so simple.
Pete Cowan has been recommending that grip for bunker shots for years
Yep
I'll definitely give this a try, my short game is good but allways looking to be better
Hi Steve,
In my opinion this must be one of your best ever videos ... can’t wait to give it a go .... I just know it will work for me!
Best wishes

Tried it tonight it is brilliant .
Thanks for the tip, been struggling with short pitches and chips😎
Steve. You make it look easy, well done.
Can't wait to bounce to the Club on March 29. Clive
Luv the glove.😄🏴
Thanks Steve. Brilliant instruction as per usual.
Never heard that one before. Superb big yin 🏴☘️🇨🇮👍
Excellent as always from Steve, and that’s why I keep coming here for any new upload, and leave with a 😀
Marvellous Steve, can't wait to try that out.
I have always chipped that way and never even thought about it great video Steve 👏👏👏👏
Do you open the clubface before taking your grip? I plan to try it on short pitches

Wonderful tip! Used it last round. Never better in the short game

Great tip Steve. Trying that this weekend.
Amazing. Will try out.
Very good tip I have been looking at ways to improve my short chips- many thanks.
Can not wait to get to the course to try this .... sounds like a good thing ...
Thanks
Great video .some call this the Butterfly grip.
Great video, butterfly hands.
Brilliant tip! Thanks Steve. Going to try that in my back garden this week
You always give me a chuckle along with great advice. Thank you very much.

Seems so easy when you do it Steve, will try this as this is the worst bit of my game. Thanks.
Can’t wait to try. Another tip that’s going into the bag my next time out
Nice explanation of the grip for proper bounce, which is what I struggle the most with. And the reason why I don't use my wedges very much ⛳⛳🤙👍👊
Just read this tip in a recent Golf Digest article featuring Victor Hovland. Great to see a video on this approach.
This tip really works, some refer to it as butterfly grip. 🦋
This is an excellent drill
Nice one will give it a try! Thanks.
that was a great tip cause i have trouble chipping with my wedges
Tried that grip tonight at the range brilliant feeling when striking the ball hope it works just as well off the grass cheers 10/10
Your tips are always spot on - keep up the great work
Do a bit of chipping in my back garden-tried this it seems to work !
Thanks Steve! I give it a go today!

Great tip ..where are you playing the ball or is it just a " try and see"

Great advice 😅
