They deserved a lot more than 45 seconds of interaction! But, I think the reason why I prefer them to Cora and Hawkeye is because their romance is so subtle.
Apparently they did film a love scene after the waterfall but it was cut because the director felt that she was a bit young and her mother was on set (She was 17). I have read from a first nation person that if you look at her hair you can see that at the waterfall she has no braid, but after the waterfall you can see one in her hair which is a sign of love or commitment. It wish they had gotten a happy ending!
This movie should have had both ships like look at them how cute they are!! Him staring at her like that at the second clip and then the behind the waterfall scene! Imagine if they actually included more! 😭😍
Yes it’s very frustrating that as beautiful as director Michael Mann’s movie is, he chose to focus on a non-existent relationship in the source material book, and totally ignore the book’s true romantic pairing, Uncas and Alice (Cora in the book). No, they weren’t lovers there either, but the book did give them more meaningful interactions. Also, in the book the younger sister Alice liked Major Hayward. Hawkeye was older and not a potential love interest at all.
I googled and found out there is unreleased footage of uncas and Alice . Daniel Day Lewis wanted more screen time cause they had alot of uncas in cuts.
