Sometimes ideas just come from nowhere! I've opened heaps of paint cans with locking rings over the years but for some reason I opened one this last week and thought 'Toggle Clamp'. After working out the best and easiest way to make them, I built a prototype and came up with this design.
With the use of the paint can locking ring, these clamps are very easy to make. The most difficult part of the clamp (the mechanism) is already provided by the locking ring, so with a few scraps of wood a clamp can easily be completed.
As always I'm happy to answer any questions.

Congratulations on the 50k subscriber mark! We do indeed live in an amazing day, where I have the opportunity to learn something new - almost instantly - from someone halfway around the world. I do appreciate your videos, and especially the thoughtful simplicity of design you generally employ. Thanks again from this fan in Oklahoma (USA).
Steve
Thank you very much Steve! I agree, this certainly is an amazing platform! :)
Pask and William Ng. I learn something every time. Both have an emphasis on the fun of the work, rather than look how smart I am.
I like how you find other uses for everyday and scrap items. Paint clamp, lawnmower tire, etc...nicely done
yeah! it's a great idea,
if you go further, you can drill holes in your workbench. and put pins down below your clamps so you can move the clamps wherever you want and need.
Great idea! Normally as you said most folks would too the ring away without even thinking about it.. but this shows how you can repurpose things.. I see many other uses for those now..
As commented before, your videos are an absolute joy.
Not only your inspirational ingenuity ,but your obvious understanding of how to distil and express *only* the necessary information .
Thanks Frank! That really is nice to hear - always good to get feedback! :)
Did you ever imagine being so successful on UA-cam today as when you made this video? Your still one of my favorite to watch here on UA-cam. It's hard to believe that it's been all these years.
This is gold. I knew I'd been saving those clamps for a reason, now I know the reason.
Hey this would also work great with dog holes! Well, I am still saving up for a workbench build so far away from things like this, but you gave me a great idea with this!
Rewatching your old videos, another good one. Completely out of the blue you've solved another problem for me. I've had a heck of a time finding washers (leathers) for my outdoor faucets. That rubber tip you cut with the hole saw is just the ticket! It would make a great washer. Thanks a bunch!
Very very clever indeed. Just love it to see someone using something which would be discarded and turn it into something useful. Nicely done as well! Thank you.
Thank you Glenn! :)
I have been addicted to your videos. I don't normally like videos, I usually forget and move on to the next (sorry) but I always remember for your videos. They're super relatable, using pretty basic tools for the most part and you have creative stuff like this!
Thanks for sharing this light bulb! I love the way you explain and present your ideas.
Thank you.
No worries Francois! :)
You have a good eye for using what you have to make what you need. Keep the ideas coming.
Great way to make those, they are pretty expensive clamps, but using scrap material is great!
I love the phrase: "The idea just hit me".... that is lovely... keep the ideas hitting you :-)
gawd dude, i am just amazed at your brilliance. Keep em' coming Pask!
Thanks Martin! :)
GEE THANKS A TON... This wonderful video has answered my prayers - a custom-made simple holding clamp. Five-star video!
Great idea. I have one or two of those and so now I know what I will be doing once the paint is used up.
As one immigrant Queenslander to another, congratulations on the 50K mark. I appreciate your videos.
Thank you Dave! :)
Well done mate can't believe how well they work I heading to the paint store...
Nice build from throw away item. You now have 948k subs, been watching you couple of years, your presentation skills vastly more confident. I feel like a time traveller telling your future !!
what an incredible useful idea, i love it, i just happen to have some of these cluttering up the basement
Seems like a great idea to use on a table saw to hold down a piece that is to be cut at a long angle or a rough piece of wood that you're trying to square up
You're a legend Pask. Just sent that one to Jay Bates to stick on his 'Interesting Stuff From Around the Web'
Thanks for that Rob! :)
Love your ingenuity and videos
Now that you have 1.08M subscribers that 50k might seem a little smaller
Great use of these scraps, love to see how you channel has grown (now that you have nearly ten times more subs than you said in the video).
The idea is great and the execution is neat and elegant
Another great idea you've given me for a panel clamping jig. Congratulations on the 50K.
Thank you! :)
A couple of bits of dowel on the bottom and you could use them on your work-bench as quick-release dogs for holding material in odd positions or angles
Congrats on 50k subscribers. You're a hidden gem on UA-cam as you present a unique style and offer innovative ideas. I hope your channel continues to grow.
Thank you very much - glad you're enjoying it! :)
Great to see a fellow Queenslander come up with an awesome and innovative idea. I will be certainly building some of these for my workshop. Good on you buddy.
I'm making this on 2 pieces of 3/4" hardwood boards with four 3/4" hardwood pegs in each to lock into my workbench with the clamps mounted on one of the boards.
You could use a plank with quarter inch holes drilled down the length. Then put pegs (or bolts) in your clamp and just adjust the clamp by moving the pegs into different holes. You could use the plank as a clamping jig if you add a backstop to it.
Pask is once again Australia's answer to MacGyver!
Haha - Thanks Sean! :)
Those turned out super!
I did watch some of your videos already but now I'm busy watching your older ones. So many splendid ideas. I subscribed.
(please never delete your older YT videos, some makers do that and that is terrible)
I have at least one locking ring (I hope I did not spoil it) and perhaps I find more (don't remember if I brought them to the dump already) so I'll give it a try
as soon as the pain can is empty (in May or so)
50 K subscribers in July 2017. 250K in January 2019. The numbers speak for themselves. Quality content!
Thanks very much! I won’t delete any videos though the older ones do make me cringe when I revisit them! 😊
brilliant use of something that would usually end up in the tip, great idea
That was slick good use of creative thinking I'M a welder and I enjoy creative people thumbs up
Spot on Neil. Great for lite work projects. Great video mate 👍
Turn the clamp around, give it a base then shorten the push handle and you can have an all in one clamp jig for holding parts... also, instead of the single length of the sliding rod, run a threaded length of rod all the way out so its adjusts to any size boards.
Clever Idea. -- You Are Very Resourceful. -
This Is The First Time I Have Seen A Cinch Clamp Atop A Paint Can.
Haven't Seen Them Here In USA. --
I Think They Are Better For ReCapping Paint Can Than What We Have.
What a great use of seemingly useless stuff!!!😊👊 awesome job Neil! It's very cool to see the things around us in a completely different light!
Glad you enjoyed that Jed! :)
Pask Makes 😁😊👊
Great idea! I have never used such a paint can and would makes the linkages myself.
Well we're here because you make good stuff and the things you say is super easy to understand. Thanks for all this.
Side note: Who are the people 'thumbs down '- ing this? What exactly is objectionable in the video? I certainly haven't seen any such thing. Ease up a bit. We don't need the hate.
Nice, creative reuse for those clamps!!
Well done, A great idea and a useful clamp for no cost
Thanks John! :)
Well done Pask
That was smart, easy, and practical.
Cleaver! I love it. We just did a video on our channel using a door hinge for a hold down clamp. We used it to hold none magnetic materials to our magnetic chuck.
Then (July 14, 2017): 50,000 subscribers.
Now (April 12, 2021): nearly 900,000 subscribers!
Not bad for four years! On the way 1,000,000!
pure genius! well done mate! that's a brilliant, original idea!
Thank you Allen! :)
Just what I have been looking for - Thank you for posting this very helpful and informative video
Wow 52K subs is amazing but not a surprise. Your channel is one of the best and you will continue to grow for a long time to come Neil, well done mate. I see these clasps everywhere but not once did I think of this, your a genius mate. Drove past your house the other day (Bruce Highway heading north) that is ................ I did wave !!!!
Thanks Max! :)
Brilliant! Love it! Great work, keep'em coming!
Thank you! :)
Love your ingenious ideas.
Good use of something you would throw away. Well done and congratulations on your 50k subscribers.
Your not just a pretty face after all my friend!!…that's one very hand tool indeed. Well done and also, congratulations on the big numbers...many more to come for sure 👍🏼😊😉
Thank you very much Marc! :)
good idea ,,,now i need to buy some big bucket paint to get that clamp
Small screws in the slots would hold the wooden Block as well I would think.
Keep up the great work!
Thanks - that would work but the glue should hold as there isn't any real pressure put on the block anyway. :)
Love watching your video's! This one..Very cool! And Congratulations on hitting the 50K mark!
Thank you Tony! :)
Very good idea mate, may copy this,Thank You.
Very well done mate. You're a genius and I love your videos! Keep up the good work!
Thanks! Very cleaver! It's so easy to make and useful! Hi from México
Brilliant idea, but I've personally never seen a paint can ring like that. Saving in case I ever see one. 😊
Despite the fact of them being dirt cheap here at Harbor Freight it's still a good idea if you just happen to have a bunch of paint cans laying about. Another commenter is right though. I can't remember the last time I saw this style of paint can and on a personal level I can't remember the last time I had enough ambition to want to use that much paint. I've kind of fallen out of love with the old paint brush.
I am guessing 5 Gallon cans, cause i have 1 and 2 gallon cans an never seen them on that size.
Very nice and clever design. Good repurposing!
I've been following you for a while. Great channel and congratulations on the 50k subs.
Keep up the good content!
Thank you James! :)
A ARTE DE PENSAR E MODIFICAR AS COISAS É O PRINCIPIO DA MUDANÇA E CRIAÇÃO.
Magnifico ese retenedor de maderas, felicitaciones amigo !!!!!!
you deserve more , I enjoy watching your videos
Thanks Glen! :)
Great idea and congrats on 50K.
Thank you! :)
bloody brilliant
why is there 221 down votes? the hell? this is perfect for the DIYer and home handy man.
I've noticed that each and every video - even the best ones - on YT have around 2-5% of downvotes (obviously awful videos have much more than that). Therefore, I've come to the conclusion that it has nothing to do with the quality of the video. Probably there's an average of 2-5% of people who "like to dislike" just for the sake of it, because they find it funny or they feel better with that.
I love this practical and easy going approach.
Excelente idea, necesito unos de esos, seguiré tu sugerencia para hacer mis propios "Toggle Clamp". En Acapulco no las venden ni en Home Depot. La carpintería de acá no usa esas innovaciones. Se trabaja aún rústicamente! Gracias!
Awesome upcycling idea. Congratulations on your 50k!!!
Thank you Walter! :)
proper clamps indeed. must try.
Thank you Donnie! :)
Well deserved support
well done on reaching 50k mate, you deserve it, but I have a feeling it's just a drop in the ocean compared to where you will be this time next year. keep those innovations coming :)
Thank you very much! :)
Great quick idea
Congratulations from Canada, keep up the vids. Fantastic.
What a wonderfully simple and great idea and design! I love it!
Thank you Rick! :)
What a great idea, Thanks for sharing and happy 50K.
No worries Nic! :)

Hello, great creativity, wish you success soon!
good idea very simple and effective
This one a light bulb moment brilliant!
Great lateral thinking.
50k subs is nothing Neil, you're on your way to a lazy mill, easy
Love it, and that Qld light coming into your shed is making me very jealous
Go Neil, you crazy pommy queenslander!
Thank you very much Robert - I'll take things one video at a time! :)
You have so many good ideas! I don't have any from paint cans but I bet I could get something similar from the hardware store.
Great little idea... need to find a mate who uses that much paint ;) 50k back then hey? Come a bit on since then. One of the thing I and Im sure many fans appreciate is the humble nature of your channel despite the obvious skill and creativity. On to 500k!
