I am actually shocked by how thin Annie's voice sounds here. I saw her live during the Strange Mercy era and it remains one of the best live shows I've ever attended. This, though...
I think this was unfair to St Vincent. I understand Kate didnt have many singles in the USA but if your gonna do just one full kate song, then let the performer, or producers bring something diferent to it that brings it to new life. It's imposible to cover the song "as it was recorded"
This shows how great and hard to imitate is Kate Bush singing. Seems like Kate is doing something easy to replicate but is VERY very hard to achieve that kind of mastery with such control over emotions and vocal technique. I’m sorry for St Vincent but this was the wrong approach to this song. Would have result better if she would’ve taken a more personal approach.
A woman who is a sixty-something recluse for over 20 years isn’t coming to perform, let’s be real. She likes her normal life and doesn’t feel comfortable having all eyes on her
Lovely voice, but not for this song. Her version here felt sterile and safe to me. This song commands a power, a gravity that pulls us into the singer's tortured emotional state coming straight from their soul. Kate Bush sang this song alternating between a harrowing venerability, to a determined intensity that gave the audience no choice but to be catapulted into her tortured state.
She sounds like she is concentrating so hard on perfectly matching the sound of Kate Bush's voice and hitting all the notes perfectly that she's not able to take it to the level of mastery that makes the original so moving. It's kind of like watching a recital by a young person who is training to be a musician--which is disappointing considering that she is a professional. Also, given that this is a live performance at a major event, the producers missed the opportunity to include a dance performance like the video does, which adds much to the emotional power of the song. Or they could have had more interesting light projections in the background.
I love St Vincent, but this performance gave me « Lana del Rey’s first SNL performance » vibes. She seems so awkward. This song is so, so, so great. A little more power in her voice would have gone a long way to making the performance better.
Exactly. It's so easy to find the far superior Kate Bush version that this one should go straight into the dustbin. And Lana del Rey, ugh... eye roll city.
Musically nice but the voice is too delicate, where it should be more powerful, aggressive but sweet. Kate's live version (2014 before the dawn and 1987 versions) are on another world. I would have preferred the interpretation of other singers (Peter Gabriel/ Elton john ,Bjork or Others) anyway they could have performed other masterpieces (art rock) , not always this one (Waking The Witch ,Jig of life, Under Ice,Hello Earth ,The Big Sky, Cloudbusting ,Mother Stands for the Confort, Night of the Swallow , The Dreaming , Get Out of My House , Leave it Open, Pull Out the Pin, All The Love,Houdini ,Breating , Babooshka, The Wedding List, Egypt , Violin , The Infant Kiss ,King of the Mountain, How to be invisible , Noctum , Aerial ,Sunset , Wuthering Heights , James and Cold Gun, Moving, Kite,Them Heavy People ,Lily, Top Of The City, Love and Anger, Reaching Out , Rocket Tails, Heads we're Dancing, Hammer Horror, FullHouse, Wow, Wild Man, Misty , Snowflake (Short version) , songs that show Kate's art rock and genius, not Always this , they could have also taken inspiration from the live versions of Before The Dawn... I can accept the fact that they didn't choose songs from Ninth Wave or Sky of Honey but many of the songs that I wrote they were not part of the Suite. I am disappointed. Kate had to perform tonight . This was the opportunity to leave everyone shocked like she did in Before the dawn 😔.
No offense to her, but …. They should have asked Florence, she’s the only one who could do this song justice and not make it feel tired as a cover at this point

Thee worst thing about other artists covering another singer's hit song is the sad critique by so-called fans. St. Vincent is not supposed to "carry energy nor vulnerability", a-la-Kate Bush! Vincent is doing 1,000,000% good simply by performing it in honor of Kate given the latter is far too old to even sing it. Vincent brings to the fore a new remembrance for future generations that were not even born when Kate first sang this.

Kate Bush herself knew St. Vincent would not come across like a clone nor would Kate want her to parrot the so-called "carrying of energy nor vulnerability".
