  • Following Kate Bush's video biography, St. Vincent featuring Annie Clark performed inductee Kate Bush's “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” (6:40). On November 3, 2023, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held at Barclays Center in New York.
Billboard: Big Boi - who’s been stumping for Kate Bush’s unique genius way before her Stranger Things breakthrough - was the natural choice to offer an induction speech for the art rock icon, who sadly didn’t attend the ceremony in person (but sent in a heartfelt thanks). “I’m the White House press secretary for Kate Bush,” the OutKast MC joked. “It does not surprise me at all that she’s enjoyed a huge surge of popularity decades after she arrived on the scene,” he said, noting that if you’d only heard her for the first time in recent years, “Why wouldn’t you think she’s a current artist” St. Vincent, who said Bush’s 1989 classic The Sensual World left her “forever changed,” sang a haunting version of “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God).”
Missy Elliott, Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine, and the Spinners were inducted into the 2023 Rock Hall in a celebration at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Her backing band absolutely killed it and I respect her for trying to make it her own. She sounded almost classical in her approach to the song while Bush’s voice was always more ethereal.

Agree. Annie can sing those intervals fine, but she falters with the rhythm. Kate’s beats are often strict, even militaristic. Annie’s behind the beat too often, to the point of distraction. The overview of KB’s career was decent, while necessarily brief. I loved the observation that Kate’s music often depict struggle while simultaneously giving hope.

I know Kate was loved by many, and her induction into the R&RHOF confirms it…..... but for me, she’s still that secret part of my being that vocalized angst, joy and magic.

Awesome clip in great quality. Thanks for loading. Although missing from the clip Big Boi (OutKast) performed the actual induction speech, proving her music touches all genres of music including Hip Hop artists and many others. She has been a true, complete, original artist since her breakthrough in 1978. She defies classification and continues to bring in new fans all over the world, to this day, thanks in part to Stranger things.

First saw her on SNL 45 years ago this Dec 9th, wishing I was The Man with the Child in His Eyes. Her music and lyrics were unlike anything I had ever heard; each one a self-contained story. It became a lifelong ritual to check the record bins and later the CD bins every time I entered a record store in hopes of a new album. I still have the vinyl and CD albums and the memory of where I bought them.
It is fitting that an artist of Kate Bush's stature, who never sought fame, has finally been recognized by the industry that she would not allow to control her art. An artist who was not focused on writing the next hit, nor becoming 'flavour of the month'. Unlike many 'pop' artists, none of her songs were based on the structure of the song that was their first 'hit'. A Kate Bush fan is someone who came to expect something new and as unique as she is in each song. That expectation was always fulfilled.
The happenstance of the use of Running up that Hill in Stranger Things is so Kate!
In these times of distressing news and division, Kate Bush is the reason I do not wish to have been born in less stressful times.
    Bravo Kate! 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤

Per haps it should be renamed the Pop Hall of Fame. As Bernie Taupin so eloquently put it in his acceptance speech ( and I paraphrase), I don't know when Pop became a dirty word. Going back to the origin of Pop, it only meant popular music."

Before ever I heard Wuthering Heights some DJ described her voice as a mix of Minnie Mouse and Bryan Ferry. I didn’t know what to expect. I’d read the book and seen a TV dramatisation and was expecting a mangled pop song. Then there she was on Top of the Pops, nervous and accompanied by an orchestral arrangement; but that didn’t matter. I listened, I watched and realised she had seen the same TV dramatisation as me and felt an affinity with her that has never left me. She is unique, truly original and as Elton said there will never be anyone else like her.

A&E started in around 1984 ? Anyway, didn't have a clue who she was, but I was mesmerized, and completely in love 😂.

I remember when I first saw her on Top Of The Pops when she first performed Wuthering Heights in 1978 and the audience didnt know what to do with it. I thought, that s**'s going to be number 1. Its unique. Nothing has changed my view of her as being a once in a lifetime unique creative genius ever since. I've always loved her work, even if I havent always understood it. And Elton is right, there has been nobody like her. Not even close. The closest the British record industry has come to discovering anyone even remotely like her and developing her from childhood to full time professional is Adele. But in terms of the breadth and variety of the creativity - nope. Just absolutely nope. There may well be someone out there like Kate, but the modern record industry is so risk averse, they will never ever take such a high risk punt in case it all goes hideously wrong. The A&R man who signed Kate (Dave Ambrose?) at EMI trusted David Gilmour's judgement and rightly so.
I cant see anyone like her emerging through the traditional record industry path, frankly. She is truly unique.
And kudos to St Vincent, for that performance. She looked like she felt every single syllable of that song and meant it. Very impressive.

Kate is definitely one of a kind and the mold was broken, was 16 when she hit number one with Wuthering Heights in New Zealand and it's been a "one sided love affair" ever since. It's also the beauty of British music to expect the unexpected with the talent that crops up now and then, the wonderful sounds that they bring. As kate once sang ''We let the weirdness in" from "Leave It Open" and that's part of the beauty of kate, and she beats her own drum and doesn't follow the trend but follows her own influences outside of the box..Brilliant artist, and one artist I have followed from day one of her career

Annie is like a spokesperson for the goddesses, they say her version is 'haunting,' that's what I get for reading... I'm having a difficult time understanding why post-structuralist representation, at this moment, is anything other than tremendously beautiful. RRHF needs more emphasis on punk rhetorical phenomenology? I'm not that stoned at all, peace and love. [My struggle to demystify post-structuralist 'rock,' manifestations in comparison to subculturalism, and rawer audible natural sociological climes is finding new synchronicity for sure.]

it's taking St Vincent everything she can possibly muster to do what Kate does without effort....Kate's talent was/is effortless, her voice and piano playing were second nature and this left tons of energy for her to WRITE incredible music. This is what's missing from much of contemporary music.

St Vincent is a great contemporary artist in her own right; listen to her album _St. Vincent_ and the song 'Digital Witness' and you'll find that she's just as great as Kate Bush is (there are other contemporary singers like Kate as well; Bat For Lashes, Santigold, Leslie Feist, Peaches, and Priscilla Ahn, all of whom make great music.)

@@Neville60001 I've heard quite a lot of St Vincent and it's just not even close to Kate Bush. It's good, I think she's definitely a cool artist but I'll check out some of the others, for sure. I'm currently visiting a lot of PJ Harvey and I like her !

@@EastmanDPJ and Björk are probably the most similar to her style of contemporary more adventurous music, mostly because Kate is credited as their primary artistic inspiration

St. Vincent is a musical genius herself (guitarist, singer, songwriter, director), even when she struggles a bit with Runing up that hill.

What's lacking here is the youthful, fun playfulness of a serious topic. The beauty lies in the innocence of the weight of the song.

Very lazy video in the sense that these are all regurgitated interviews Elton, David, Annie, Chvrchs, etc are all interviews made for BBC shows. The people could and would have made themselves available for an interview to induct Kate. This is just pathetic and lazy.
