I prefer a straw hat for summer because in the hot climes they're better vented. Also, I'm glad you're supporting American boot makers, it hurts my heart when I see western boots made in China.
Sane here!!
I'm not a big fan of straw hats but I understand the boots made in China.
Huge fan of straw hats i dont know whats the big deal with people not wanting to wear them as if theyre inferior ppl give tem these nasty looks even my friends that dress western look at me weird for preferring the straw hats i dont get it they keep saying theyre for workers only as if a cowboy wasnt a worker
Learning 46 years about hats straw may till September or felt year around!
Agreed 100% facts
My last western style hat i bought way back in 1975 - it was a 3x Felt size 7 1/8 with a 5" brim and 6.5" crown flat top - it was jet black with a Sliver band - it was made by American Hat Co. in Huston Tex. - i wore that hat till 2004 - i gave that hat to a 20 year old young man because he loved it and id moved on to baseball caps - he still wears it daily - in 2004 just before i gave that hat away i had it appraised in case i needed to insure it - its appraised replacement value was $750 - in 1975 i paid $68 for that hat lol
Could you please tell me where you had it appraised?
That’s an insane price increase and that’s also cool that you passed down the hat i would love to have a passed down hat from the 70s
I’m glad I share this country with u brother. It’s a better place because of men and women like you and yours.
Nice you got a Resistol. Those are good hats. Their factory is south of me in Garland, Texas. I wear an American both in summer and winter. I used to have a Resistol straw but i beat it up working on the ranch after about a year. Upgraded to an American 5050 a few months ago. About 200 bucks more than my Resistol in terms of price but it keep my head a lot cooler while i'm working because of the ventilated crown. Its a must in Texas though. The heat gets unbearable sometimes. I even got ventilated Ariat's. Working in triple digit weather sucks when your sweating like crazy from head to toe. I wish that cooler weather y'all got up north would come down here.
Wow! Stumbled across your video and, boy, it did my heart good! Sold, shaped and restored hats for many years and you are the first to shape the style that I wear and have worn for years, before anyone even knew what a 'Gus' was. I have worn Double H boots since I was a really young and I'm a 76 years young Gramma. Hat, boots, jeans and wild rags make me a stand out in liberal Oregon, even though I live 27 miles from the Pendleton Round Up...maybe I should move to Montana! Love the video!
This is too cute you’ve got your kid helping you out.
I love North 40. They’ve got great prices and huge selection.
And everyone loves the Trinity and his Family 🙏🏼📖🕊🏔️🐂🇺🇸
The strangest thing about this video is seeing Trinity WITHOUT a hat. As they say, I didn't recognize you without your hat.
Also look how fancy Trinity is getting. He not only gets a new hat, but now he's got a camera operator doing all the videoing him getting all these fancy new duds.
😄😄. Yes. I don’t go very often without a hat on. That’s for sure.
And yes. I thanked my daughter for coming along to run the camera. It helped tremendously.
You are correct. Cowboy without a hat is like riding in shorts.
@@richardharrold4357 Ooooooo! I did that as a kid. Riding with shorts is painful.
@@richardharrold4357 lol
Without his hat he looks like little kid to me, maybe Dennis the menace when he was younger. 😁😁😂😂
What you really need, is an Open Crown hat that way you don't need to take the wrinkles out. Lol Not that you didn't know that already. Thanks for the video!
Brings back memories❤, thank you Trinity!
My uncle took me to Sam's Western Shop (family owned for decades until the town I lived in needed to make room for a sports/events arena😭), to buy a hat and boots for my first horse show. The hat was easy to find but the boots, well, I have large feet with HIGH arches, so it took a bit of doing.
Btw, we took 3rd place and might of done better if the rider knew what she was doing😜
Trinity i like your style of hat, i use to make cowboy, fedoras hats for Mr. Joe Peters at Downtown Fort Worth, your right about every state has their own unique style, but my favorite was the gus, and the way you shaped this one is just perfect! Thanks for posting and sharing your wisdom on Ranch life and overall everything else!🙏
Now this video was really interesting!! The steamer you used when shaping your hat was really cool! There was only steam when holding the hat over the steamer!! I love the color of your new hat! Your wife will love it too I’m sure😀
So glad you also found a new pair of boots and on your first pair you tried!! As always thank you for sharing!!
Till next time…. Take care and God Bless!!!
With love from
Kathy
Washington State 🇺🇸👋🏻🥰
Thank you Kathy. Yes. The steamer has a foot petal that I push down with my foot. Very handy.
I never realized that the style of a cowboy hat does change your looks. Great hat and boots. Now your wife will let you off the ranch😊 thanks for sharing
HH American made boots are amazing. I bought two pairs last year and they’re still going strong. You won’t regret the purchase. The hat shaping lesson was great. The steamer does look easier to use than the tea pot at home. I might try that next time. Also, you might want to look for an open crown hat next time. They look like they’re easier to shape since you don’t have to unshape them first.
They are easier to start with. However, most open crown hats tend to be more expensive most of the time I just grab one off the shelf. 😁
Thanks for taking us shopping; you always have such great and versatile programing. God bless richly and may you need many more hats and boots.
I love that grey color on you, Trinity ❤
Trinity, kudos to you! You know what looks great on you!
Thanks Lydia.
Yw. Hope wife didnt mind
Like the grey color of your hat, like ur HH boots also. I'ma get my hat shaped like yours. I really like this hat shape!!! Your videos are great!!! Have a great weekend Trinity!
Again, I commend your work and thoughts in the videos you do. As a fellow Montanan, I appreciate the work you and other ranchers and farmers do. God bless you and your family!
Nice hat and boots🇺🇸 God bless.
Loved this episode!!!! Totally agree!!! I always have to have mine reshaped to fit me!!!
Great video!!

Thanks Harmony.
Sure am glad I found your channel!!! I lived in Sturgis, SD 3 different times in my life. I love the Black Hills!!
Very helpful showing how to reshape a hat! My daughters cowboy/girl hat needs this done and now we can do it at home. Thanks for showing us!
I had a beautiful, white Resistol in the 1960s & 70s (my dress hat). We moved and it was in storage for a bit. A 'mud dauber' got in and built a nest of red dirt. It stained that hat, which was then permanent. 😭
I was also taught that you picked a felt hat up with your fingers inside the band, and your thumb on the rim of the brim so you didn't get oil on the felt.
I’ve been to that North 40 in Great Falls and the one in Havre. I happened to be driving through on my way back from Alaska and stayed in Great Falls. I encountered an April snowstorm and ended up staying for a few days and went shopping there. A person can spend a lot of time and money in there. 😎🤠 definitely like the shaping of the hat compared to the original before the steam.
Hat looks good. Great job on the steaming.
Thank you.
I love your new grey hat. Cheers to your new boots too! ❤📣👍
Whelp, you spent some money lol. I've never seen a cowboy steam his own hat before - that's a skill worth having. Glad you bought US made stuff. It irritates me when I see boots (and particularly hats) made in China. I could probably spend days in that darn store!
There's just something very wrong with any western anything made in a communist country.
You probably could. Yes.
I love old vintage hats, they have many stories, happy trails.
That color looks great on you.
Glad you like it. I wasn’t sure.
I had no idea it was possible to shape a hat in the store! Nice tips on fitting a hat, too. And your new hat looks very handsome on you.
These videos are so helpful. I live in the UK and shape my own hats using steam from a kettle or saucepan. Not ideal but I get there in the end. All these tips are a life saver.
I’ve always admired your style of hat, I noticed it the first video I watched of yours. Thanks for sharing your method of personalizing it your way.
I thought it was a guss but wasn’t sure. Nice you trying to support American made, I just got myself a pair of Anderson Bean boots. So far the most comfortable I’ve ever had. In the past I’d usually just gotten cheap ones and wasn’t ever very happy.
Thanks again for sharing your videos!
I think the cattleman's crease looks much more complimentary than the Gus crease. I do think the store did a good job with the brim front. They retained the curvature and didn't force sharp angles when it turns up. Today brims are often shaped into an angry taco with a flat front and sharp vertical sides.
When I was a young teenager, we called that style a Tom Mix
Yes. The Tom Mix crown is taller though.
@@LifeintheWest 👍
Ok, so new boots and hat means we need to see a video showing you taking your wife out on a date! 😜
On a seperate note, I miss MT and the amazing western stores. Now added to my list, North 40 in Great Falls. 😊
Love buying new hats for my self and see how they shaping it.
Appreciate it. I'm going to have to use a teapot but you've given me the courage! btw, the hat you came in with looks like an old dog seeing the new puppy arrive. Give it some extra love. I've subbed.
I’d love that hats came back on fashion. It is difficult (and embarrassing) to wear hats here in Spain.
I'd wear one anyway. Since the Spainards were & are a big influence on Western culture here in the U.S. many of our hat styles trace back to Spain.
I love that hat on you! It looks really good with your complexion it suits you
I have a pair of Double H boots, I havent really gotten a chance to wear them much because of school, they would get ruined instantly (in Oregon, people dont understand how expensive a good pair of boots can be and people at my school will intentionally step on my boots), but I absolutely love them and they are my favorite boots I have ever owned. Great choice!
I have a black Resistall with a 4 inch fedora crown that was a birthday present in 1986. I tend to handle my hat by the brim with my left hand. This hat has been rained on, snowed on, and once dumped in the ocean, when my horse got a bit squerrely in the surf. It cleans up nicely with a shoe polishing brush, but now the sweat band is starting to deteriorate in the front. Still fits perfectly, and looks like I want it to.
I didn’t know picking cowboy hats is this kinda process… eye opening
It is when you like to personalize it like I do.
new hat clor is awesome. I liked the shape before you messed with it. 😄To each his own. liked this video.
I think I know where you’re coming from regarding a good hat. I have a nice mostly beaver hat that ended up in a torrential rain storm and looked like I had earflaps the next day. Steamed it back to original shape in a day. Spending some extra money is well worth it.
Back in the day I always bought Resistol!! The Resistol Quarter Horse was my favorite!! I still have my first cowboy hat (with my own money) that I bought when I was 16. It was a Resistol!! Still have the same feathers in it and I still wear it!!!

Kept one Black Kirkpatrick for dress. Had a brown one made to work in. It outlasted several Stetsons . It was okay to work in, but not for going to town in. Loved that old brown hat.
I went the North 40 store in Lewiston wow what a store, I did buy a few things to bring back to the UK.
Good for you.
Nice hat and boots ...I love shopping for those hahaha
Great episode! Thanks
I like the gray hat on ya, Trinity. I've got one somewhere. You're right about sweat stains on these light colored felt/fur cowboys hats. I like a flat brim in front and they don't like to stay the way as they like to "round out" the personal touches put in. In warmer months I switch to straw As most do. I am surprised you don't wear the "Iron Ranger" of cowboy boots - Olathe. Built tough and lasts a long time, especially the copper 6720 and black 6961 buckaroo boots. I also wear Justin, Nocona, Dan Post, Olathe, and custom fits.
Nice hat and boots 👍
One stain I was never able to get completely off a cowboy hat was dehorning blood.
Yeah Double H is made right here in my home state of Pennsylvania! I’ve had several pair and as long as you get them resoled or rehealed they last forever! I have a pair of buckaroo style with round toe and saddle vamp. I also have a pair of packers/kiltie lacers and they are good for everything from mucking to riding horses to riding my Harley to do construction work! I also have a pair of the more traditional square toes That are a shiny black cherry that I wear for church and dancing. Not like these modern square toes that look like a ducks bill but just about 1-1.5 inches wide with single row stitching. I’m glad to see people still appreciate this great smaller quality American made boots company!!
Are you close to Martinsburg? I love their boots and their factory is 10 minutes from my house. Love it
Buying the resistol 20x Conley straw hat for the summer. Coolest looking hat I’m gonna be purchasing yet! I can’t wait!
Nice choice.. I actually like that old one. Maybe as I've got one that's over 35 years old I used to ride in.. it's a straw hat and you oughta see that thing! 😆
I have worn a pair of Double H boots every day for over a year and a half now, best boots I have ever owned.
Loved the hat tutorial! 🤠
That grey is a great color on you sir, im usually not the biggest grey fan but it really works plus the shape is very unique
Great video! Beautiful new hat and i like the style you shaped it in! And as you i like to wear my hat low on the head, pretty windy here often 😊
My first pair of boots were double h boots a man gave to me because they were to big for him. Loved those boots, can't for my life find any new double h here in europe unfortunately :(
9:18 I relate to this😂 just the other day I was doing this while shaping an old felt hat that was given to me
Must be nice to be able to buy hats and boots off the shelf. Wearing a size 7-7/8 hat and 15W boot I normally have slim pickings to choose from if anything.
Double H fits me the best. Need the leather soles though. The hat looks great too. Great place. One stop does it all.
I’m really surprised you didn’t go to Hoglunds and talk to Mike about a new hat but North 40 is a favorite go to for me on everything archery.
I like the flat top buckaroo hat - they fit my head better, more sun protection and keeps it's shape. Buy long ovals. Gave my 1975 Resistol black hat to my little 2 year old son in 1983 and he wore it until it fell apart. It went through everything imaginable...
So neat! Looks great
Has your legs ever seen sunshine? I got a headache from the glare. 🤣🤣😂😂
Once a year whether I need to or not.
Nice job, Trinity!!!!

Makes you look like a local.
Gotta ask, how many calves does it take to buy a new hat and a pair of boots?
I once spent a week, with hot water in a bathtub, with a one inch piece of pencil, on a coffee table, putting a "Pencil Roll" in a Resistall Silverbelly Grizzly...fuzzy. I paid $200. for the hat. When I finished it, a friend offered me $400. for it...I never got to wear it.
You should do some episodes on cowboy gear. I have a hat from Greeley Hat Co. He’s a pretty cool guy, makes custom hats with a lot of 100 plus year old tools. He knows lots of tidbits about the history of hating.
Another cool spot would be the prison shop at Deer Lodge. Some of the braiding that those guys turn out is on another level. When you have nothing but time you can get real good at your craft. You can really tell the tack made by a lifer vs a guy only in for a few months.
I like straw hats in summer and felt in colder weather. I sweat a lot so do want to make my felt dress hat all nasty…
Great video!!
Oh NO! You just got it broke in, it's a keeper and now it has a few battle scars, it stays, wife hasta go! 🙂
Love double h boots, only gripe I have is that they are thirsty dry out of the box.
I’m a Lucchese guy but your spot on about the fit!
That was very interesting, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it.
HH boots for 15 years now love them
Howdy from Marana AZ
I prefer a black felt Buffalo year round, my last hat is a Stetson with Gus crown from Cowtown Boots in Tucson AZ.
Take care and God bless 🤠 🌵
I always have my hats shaped to suit my style. I like Stetsons since they are made hrre in Texas I used to have my hats cleaned, but that has just gotten too expensive.
Good idea on steamin the band area to form your head. Was always afraid to do so. I just sweat in mine to form lmao
Sweat works too. This is just faster.
Looks Great!
I get Justine ropers what ever color they have.when it gets down to point of duct tape I have themresoled . I don't have problem stopping on spur
I just bought a pair of double h boots. I really like them.
Man I love North 40 got one in cda near where I live.
I think your wife is right. Your hat is fine for work, but a dress hat is a must for going to church, dinning out, public events, etc. You look teal good in that Grey dress hat. Good choice. Nice boots, good choice. Very nice store!
Your old hat is still fine!
Thank you.
oh man, so dope. Greetings from South Africa!
I've got me some cheap ass hat that's like $20 - but man, how I wish I could get an authentic hat.
Hopefully I'll get my passport/visa soon then come over - very pricey though!
I've been to Great Falls which is a nice town. Be sure to visit the Chas. Russel Museum and Art Studio. Worth your visit.
You’re going have to get a patent, looks pretty sharp 👍
You ever tried akubra hats? I quite like the Aussie style not too big, keeps sun off me and rain while im out and about(an i definitely ain't no rancher/cowboy)
Production on this video is great.
Thanks. When I am not riding I can use my big camera for a better picture and sound.
Your best bet would be to get an open crown hat ( uncreasted ) and shape the crown the way you want it and avoid all the unshapin and reshapin . Besides that the hat turned out purty schaweet 👍 looks more like a Festus hat than a Montana or low Gus
Excellent Video 👍
Should have come to Boot Barn in Missoula! I’m the resident hat snapper and yours isn’t all that hard to do- though it would take a minute or two to get the stains just right… 😂
But seriously, next time come to Missoula! We have way more styles and selection than North 40.
I don’t wear a cowboy hat but I might soon pick up either a buckaroo or gambler crown with a big flat brim
Nice hat!
Keeps the Sun out of your eyes in the rain off your back
Gets so hot, here in Australia, the hats naturally steam on our heads.
I would guess the heat there is very intense!
Double H are nice boots !
I hope you left you other hat for they could clean er up and treat it. Then you could reform the cleaned and treated old hat. Repair any area's etc. God bless you and yours from Texas.
They attempted to clean my old one but it was too engrained in the felt.
@Trinity Vandenacre did you bring your old friend home and still use for everyday use and wear the new one for church until it's wore some of the new off!
I like my front brim down a lot , tall in top front pinch place to put on your hat
The grissom! Good choice. How do you like them?
This was a fun and light educational video! Both hats are great, but I love the color of the tan best. I thought it made you stand out in a good, humble way and was your signature look. Can that be cleaned up to remove stains also?
Thanks. I tried to have it cleaned, but I am afraid it’s in there for good.
MANY years ago I had a girlfriend that had my hat professionally cleaned for me... It was never the same again... And not in a good way...
@@LifeintheWest Ahha, now I know why you're the only cowboy I've seen with tan cowboy hat - impossible to clean! ...🤠
