  • Worst oil change ever... But I got it changed.
    Stupid Chinese made Craftsman hex socket broke off in my oil drain plug.
    FYI: I replaced my Gause Filter cover bolts with Hex head Bolts from LOWES.
    I never have to worry about stripping them.
    It was a PITA to remove the Oil Drain Plug.

    Apologies to all waiting for my 48K mile service.
    It was such a PITA that I just said F-it and turned the camera off.
    I may attempt it again at 64K.
    If I didn't have to remove the rear cylinder to replace the head gasket, it would have been OK.
    There were just so many parts breaking when trying to remove them that I had to just concentrate on the bike and less on the video.
    Please forgive me.

    Love your videos man! I changed oil, coolant, brake fluid and removed my front tire on my 1990 VFR 750 after looking at your videos. I learned a lot and saved a bunch of money, thank you!

    I am at 46K.
    I haven't had time to ride much this year.
    I do have all the parts and tools to do it and I do need to fix the oil leak from the rear cylinder.
    But no time to ride no time to wrench on bikes.

    I just changed my oil on my SF848 Ducati and it was on the pit bull rear stand and I filled the oil accordingly between the two lines, but when I drop it off the stand and hold it upright the oil is way above the top mark. DId I F it up and now have to pull some out with a syringe?

    • @RideWNC
      @RideWNC  9 років тому

      P Banks The bike needs to be on both Pit Bull stands, Level. Just drop the plug and let some drain out.
      Or start the bike once the oil filter is full it may drop to the top line. Don't race the engine.

      MikeE RideWNC Thank you good sir! So if I start the bike and the oil level is between the two lines am I pretty much good to go and if so can I ride it like I stole it as usual? Obviously I don't hold you accountable, but your experience is far greater then mine on this stuff. Thanks again
      EDIT: I just went out and started the SF and when the engine is running on level ground and upright perfectly, the oil is exactly at the Low mark line.

    • @RideWNC
      @RideWNC  9 років тому

      P Banks The oil needs to be between the lines when the bike is off and has sat for a few minutes to allow oil to drain from the top.
      As long as the oil is at or below the top line, you will be OK.

    Just stripped out two of my gause filter bolts. What size torx bolt did you beat into it? T25?

    • @RideWNC
      @RideWNC  10 років тому +1

      It has been awhile.
      Start small and work your way up...
      Then head to Lowes for Hex head bolts.
      It sucks that Ducati uses such crappy bolts.
      While you are at it, get new bolts for your clutch slave. You will need those next.

      Ah man. Bleeding my brakes and clutch fluid was the plan for tomorrow. I've got to go through this again? Sucks. Your videos are incredibly helpful. Searched ducati.org for more on the gause filter. Guess who was the only guy talking about it?

    • @scottmiller2848
      @scottmiller2848 10 років тому

      MikeE RideWNC It's a T27 for the gause filter bolts

      I also ended up ruining my bolts. I didn't take care and thought they were hex-head screws/bolts. Ruined two that way before I realized that it might a Torx screw. Managed to get them out and replaced them with 4 hex-head bolts I got from Osh. They are 6mm X 16mm course threads - about 1.30 each. No more stripping for me. Though I do worry about the metal parts heating and cooling differently since the metal is not the same as the factory bolts/screws.

    Thanks for posting this video. I am planning on doing the oil change on my 2010 848 but before I do it I wanted to know what this o-ring talk is all about? is there something else I need to do when I do an oil change?

    • @RideWNC
      @RideWNC  10 років тому +1

      This video is a full blown oil change.
      Maybe every other oil change or more should you need to pull the gause filter.
      Back in the day, Ducati had problems with manufacturing and they failed to smooth the edges of the stamped rockers which then destroyed the cams.
      It was important then to pull the gause filter and remove the chrome particles.
      Watch the oil drain, if you don't see anything sparkle in the oil, your bike is, OK.
      The gause filter catches all of the metal chunks. Today's Ducati's are build well.
      They like to be used and run hard. My 2008 has 51K on the clock and it has only been ridden hard in the mountains. With proper PM's I plan to get another 150K out of her.
      The O-rings in question should just be wiped clean and reinstalled.
      There is no need to replace them unless they look cracked. On a 2010 I doubt you will have any issues.
      Be careful not to poke any holes in the gause filter when removing it.
      Good luck. I know you will do a good job and your bike will appreciate the fresh oil.

      MikeE RideWNC thank you! i really appreciate your help on this. Just to confirm the O-ring is on the gause filter right? Also, I saw your other video the one that does just the oil filter and oil change...is that the one I should use at this point? I just dont know what to expect once I take the fairings off. This is my first time doing something like this and I really want to do it right and save the money. I know theres a lot of satisfaction doing this stuff on your own! I just hope I have the tools...I dont have the oil filter wrench...

    Why the hell did he fill this bike with a High Mileage Synthetic CAR OIL?? Everyone in the moto world knows that is a big No-No as the oil in bikes circulates through the entire drivetrain.

    • @RideWNC
      @RideWNC  5 років тому

      Right... I have 62,000 miles on this 848 only using Mobil 1 High Mileage since 600 miles. I have hundreds of thousands of miles using Mobil 1 High Mileage on MANY different motorcycles. If you want to argue oils there are plenty of forums waiting for you. I don't care what you use. Mobil 1 10W-40 High Mileage will not harm your clutch disks. Mobil 1 regular car oil will give you problems.
