Brave New Shakespeare Challenge - ROMEO AND JULIET with Pedro Pascal | The Public Theater

- Inspired by the joyous ways the world community is responding to this challenging time by creating performance, song, conversation, and connection, The Public Theater is inviting the world to use Shakespeare’s words to connect with friends, family, and communities, all from their homes.
We’ll start the week’s challenge by inviting actors and artists of The Public Theater family to record and share their interpretation of the week’s passage - and then IT’S UP TO YOU! Act out the passage, set it to music, dance to it, paint a picture, or translate it into your own words and language.
For Week 2 - Pedro Pascal has given us Pablo Neruda's Spanish translation of a monologue from ROMEO AND JULIET.

I didn't even google him. I never thought to do so because I thought he woulda taken his helmet off the first episode. Then I thought, maybe the second and so on. LOL
It really didn't dawn on me to look it up. I do it with everyone else.
I'm still surprised how I dodged so many spoilers. I didn't watch season 1 until right before season 2 began. OMG! WTF? When I saw it was Oberyn... I was like "Wait. I know him. Game of Thrones. What you doing here? That's his voice!" With all those cuts and fake/real blood on his face, he was still hot. (Sorry. He's intriguing and beautiful)

I do not speak Spanish, but I can recognize words here and there so I decided to have the captions on to better follow his performance and... *This is the first time I really **_fealt_** how damn romantic and full of devotion this monologue is.* Just how he says "¡Es *_Julieta,_* es _el _*_sol_* en el oriente!" like "ooooooh, I GET IT now."
Also, by the time "¡Ved como su mejilla está en su mano!" (See how she leans her cheek upon her hand) comes around, and that _swallow,_ *I was **_NOT. READY._** for the next two lines!* Holy SHIT. this is _good._
There's something about Shakespeare when you separate it a degree or two, that just makes it read so much more understandable or fresher. As an audience member, you're already doing the work of consciously bring context to the performance with the changes, so you bring even MORE empathy and context than you normally would to something so route as one of Shakespeare's most famous monologues ever, which makes you *connect even more.*
It is a different Spanish from the one we are used to hearing because the Chilean accent is a Latin language of the "romance" variant, it is a "romantic Spanish", that is why Chile has good poets and writers.
That's why Pedro's accent also sounds cool when he speaks in English.

I don't particularly care for Shakespeare, and I didn't think I'd care about this very much, but when he started with "Silencio" my heart skipped a beat. I was not expecting that. I liked this read. Usually when I hear Shakespeare monologs, I feel like the actors do it in a dramatic way, which I don't really care for, but his version seemed very gentle and authentic.
His voice...the words flow like music,and the emotion...I'm actually tearing up.I've heard this many times in English,but this is a very new experience and it's so beautiful.

Let me say this. I read this in English class of course but it took me about two days to understand that passage. (It’s embarrassing but true)
Spanish is my first language and with him reading it that one time, it hit me. I understood it with just hearing him read it once! (I think that means I need Pedro to read for me)

It's actually kind of cool haha, he has a little bit of an accent in Spanish now that since he's so far removed from Chile... se le escapó el sonido de la "r" en ciertas partes del extracto 😅... también uso la palabra "translación" la cual no existe en el español, es un falso cognado (debe ser "traducción"...)

No soy de Chile pero mi papá vivió allá cuando fue joven. I'm Colombian but grew up here in the US, so I understand Pedro's struggle, lol. It's so easy to let your Spanish get rusty if you don't practice!
