Bernie Sanders is a Democratic candidate for President of the United States. He is serving his second term in the U.S. Senate after winning re-election in 2012 with 71 percent of the vote. Sanders previously served as mayor of Vermont’s largest city for eight years before defeating an incumbent Republican to be the sole congressperson for the state in the U.S. House of Representatives. He lives in Burlington, Vermont with his wife Jane and has four children and seven grandchildren.
Bernard “Bernie” Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York, to immigrant parents and grew up in a small, rent-controlled apartment. His father came to the United States from Poland at the age of 17 without much money or a formal education. While attending the University of Chicago, a 20-year-old Sanders led students in a multi-week sit-in to oppose segregation in off-campus housing owned by the university as a Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) officer. In August of 1963, Sanders took an overnight bus as an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to hear Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech firsthand at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
After graduation, Bernie moved to Vermont where he worked as a carpenter and documentary filmmaker. In 1981, he was elected as mayor of Burlington as an Independent by a mere 10 votes, shocking the city’s political establishment by defeating a six-term, local machine mayor. In 1983, Bernie was re-elected by a 21 point margin with a record amount of voter turnout. Under his administration, the city made major strides in affordable housing, progressive taxation, environmental protection, child care, women’s rights, youth programs and the arts. In 1990, Sanders was elected to the House of Representatives as the first Independent in 40 years and joined the Democratic caucus. He was re-elected for eight terms, during which he voted against the deregulation of Wall Street, the Patriot Act, and the invasion of Iraq.
In 2006, Sanders defeated the richest man in Vermont to win a seat in the U.S. Senate as an Independent. Known as a “practical and successful legislator,” Sanders served as chairman of the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs where he authored and passed the most significant veteran health care reform bill in recent history. While in the Senate, Sanders has fought tirelessly for working class Americans against the influence of big money in politics. In 2010, he gave an eight-and-a-half hour filibuster-like speech on the Senate floor in opposition to extending Bush-era tax breaks for the wealthy. In 2015, the Democratic leadership tapped Bernie to serve as the caucus’ ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee.
Known for his consistency on the issues, Senator Sanders has supported the working class, women, communities of color, and the LGBT community throughout his career. He is an advocate for the environment, unions, and immigrants. He voted against Keystone XL, opposes the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, wants to expand the Voting Rights Act, and pass the Equal Rights Amendment.

I know he wants to change things and what he wants to change are things that matter to everyone, not just the super rich or the super poor. They are things that have needed to be changed for decades when the likes of Ronald Regan (he was actually a good one to some degree because of Nancy, who steered him right when he was headed way wrong), George Bush Sr., Bill Clinton, and George Bush Jr. (how the fuck did that idiot ever get elected in the 1st place. We all know how he got elected in the second one. Cheating and lying.) were in power and pandering to the money and power that brought them there. Bernie Sanders is not owned by money or power, nor does he owe them anything. He owes me, though, and I trust him to pay me back with an improved life in the next 5 years. I gave him what I could from my $12/hour income and will miss golfing with my friends for a couple of months, but I believe it IS worth it.

There is not even a flicker in my mind, that Bernie represents the only real possibility of lifting the US and NATO direct and indirect oppression of pretty much the whole Middle East and instead give an honest offer of partnership based on mutual respect. Well. The first steps down that road. All that pain and suffering isn't exactly going to go away. The best chance at reigning in Israel and giving Palestine recognition and a voice. Oh how I would love to see a president visiting Gaza for example. And in earnest go there to listen and to learn.

I'm so proud to finally see a presidential candidate that is interested in making sure everyone has equal rights, especially the natives who have been screwed over for so many decades, and he will actually spend the time to listen to what has happened to our people, and try to figure out what he needs to do to fix it. Making sure Native Americans are treated with respect, have their voices heard and culture preserved should most definitely be part of the political revolution whether Bernie is nominated (I can't yet bring myself to entertain the idea of him not being nominated yet, so I won't say "or not"). They've suffered the most in this country and we need them to learn from them, especially when it comes to taking care of Mother Nature. We owe it to them to take care of them, as they are as a whole still suffering.

I am so glad that Bernie is FINALLY talking about the ongoing horrors perpetrated on the Native Americans by the United States. He is the only candidate I've ever heard to address this. I have seen Bernie speak three times: twice in Portland, Oregon and once in Salem, Oregon. In each speech, when he spoke of Native Americans and their pain, and how much we are indebted to our fellow Native Americans, and how he wants to change the system to INCLUDE and better the relationship between the U.S. and the tribes, I got tears in my eyes. Thank You Bernie!

W A R N I N G !!! I have found many people in caucus states are not even aware that they live in one or that they have to show up there to "vote" in a primary. Remember, a lot of states have caucuses and NOT a primary ballot. For those states you have to show up at your local caucuses to 'vote' for Bernie in the primary. States that have caucuses: Iowa, Alaska, Nevada, North Dakota, Kansas, Wyoming, Hawaii, Kentucky (Republican only), Maine, Washington (Democratic only).
We Americans have so much to learn. Native People are teachers...
