Crochet thread size 10 is what I like to use. It's strong but thin, which makes threading neat

Do I need to use any varnish in top of the wood stain and nails for long lasting? Mainly in humidity atmosphere

The wood stains contain polyurethane which acts like a sealer. There are also some clear wood sealer sprays that can be sprayed on after painting that work very well as a protective/sealer coat

How thick do the boards need to be?

Hi there! I'd say about half an inch... If your board is thin the nails will go through the back.
You also want enough thickness for your nails to be firm after hammering them. If your nails are loose, the pulling/tightness of the thread while stringing will pull the nails off the board..
