  • A short tuning comparison among 12-equal temperament, quarter-comma meantone, Vicentino's adaptive just intonation, by means of a fragment from Paradies' Toccata, tuned into:
    1) 12edo (yellow screen);
    2) Quarter-comma meantone (green screen);
    3) Vicentino's adaptive just intonation (blue screen).
    Vicentino's adaptive just intonation is implemented by setting up two chains of quarter-comma fifths at a distance of a quarter-comma; this allows to tune the overall piece into quarter-comma meantone and to raise fifths and minor thirds by a quarter comma, which turns them into the corresponding just intervals.

    Fast arpeggiated pieces probably aren't the best way to show off tuning differences. I've heard speculation that Bach's WTC1 C# Major prelude was written to be fast because it hid the spicier harmonies of unequal temperaments.

      Maybe so 🙂 anyway, this time a global feeling of the differences among the tunings does seem to spring from this fragments... however, here's a lenghtier tuning comparison using Pachelbel's canon on-the-fly:

      How was it written to be fast? No tempos in manuscript.

    Did you intentionally make it impossible to tell the difference?

      Oh no, sir... the goal was quite the opposite in fact 🙂maybe this lenghtier tuning comparison using Pachelbel's canon on-the-fly will work better for you:

      Sounds like you just have an untrained ear. You may consider yourself lucky, ignorance might be bliss in this case, since the better you become, the more you scrutinize, and it sort of ruins the experience. But honestly, to someone with some training to their ears, they will hear glaring differences immediately. Obviously, as we're used to equal temperament, that's what sounds best to me, while meantone sounds very out of tune. The adaptive just intonation sounds how you would expect just intonation to sound like in its respective key, which should sound perfectly in tune, but still sounds a little out of tune to my ears, probably due to being used to equal temperament.

      Don't listen for pitch differences but listen to how the ET version sounds like a 2d wall of notes and then listen to how the other versions in increasing order seem to add depth and a 3d feel to the sound. That's how I experience the differences.
