    I have had my 1907s for almost 2 years now. I absolutely love them. The break in was quite harsh. I didn't want to cause any undo wear on them so I just embraced the suck and dealt with the break in. Totally worth it now.

    I own these. Size 11. I had no break in time. I put them on and have been good to go. I've been wearing them for two years now and the sole is still holding up. I make sure I mink oil them once every three months. I don't know if that is too much but it keeps them looking brand new. Like the boot guy said, these are not work boots. These are my casual everyday wear.

    i use rw classic mocs in my farm in the tropics (the philippines) with shorts (kinda dorky looking, i know). i've had them for about a year. i needed the lateral support as the landscape is quite hilly. i also needed the heavy leather protection from all those things that stab at your feet. i also needed protection from the tropical mud. after the initial break-in period of about a couple of months of weekend use and quite a bit of rw mink oil, it has finally become quite comfortable. the nicks, scratches, patina and mold of the leather portion of heel make it look beautiful. it could only have been worn to get this kind of look. it has become standard farmwear since they really protect my feet. i can't imagine wearing anything else.

    Best thing i've found for breaking in boots quickly is Mink Oil. Softens up the leather just enough to make the break-in period that much shorter. In the meantime, it conditions the leather and adds a water-resisting barrier to the boot, as well.

    • @Negoveioh
      @Negoveioh 5 років тому +5

      Don't do that. Too much oil will only darken the leather and make it look soggy. New boots don't need to be oiled at least for a year. Take care.

    I bought it today. And although I know, I will have to break in a while and although it is strong on my feets, I love it. And I know , this is "my Boot" and I will have it (and love it) for years. Thank you for your video,

    I bought this boots on sale at Nordstrom, I am a size 12 and went only a half size down (on my iron ranger black, I went 1 size down), still in the break in period, going well. Very nice, comfortable surprisingly, does not tire my feet. I take it to my local Redwing store for the leather care.

    First off, thanks boot guy for doing these reviews. Helpful and good variety off boots reviewed. Keep pumping out these videos!
    Second off here's what I have to say.
    I wear Redwing 1907 and also Thorogood 814-6201. Have been wearing both for a month, so this is only a review for that time period and not extensive.
    Both moc toe, wedge sole, 6", soft toe.
    I will say I wear them differently.
    The Redwing I have been wearing for work (landscaping), and all purpose. Thorogood I have been wearing around town, light jobs, and more casually.
    In comparing the two boots.
    I will say the Redwing outright have a more heavy duty feel to them. They break in slower and have a bit more of a raw feel on my foot. However, the more they continue to break in, the more comfort they provide. For work I have found that the wedge sole has been nice for me. Mud does not cake up under the outsole, and for walking on flat surfaces they are nice.
    The wear on the wedge sole has not been bad after a month of 8-12 hour days. I am walking anywhere from 5-15 miles per shift depending on the work. Over that time I have rotated occasionally with a pair of Carolina Loggers (ca9821). So probably 20 some odd days of work on the Redwing in the first month, plus some extra wear. This has got them to a decent break in point.
    I have found that the Thorogood are soft and supple and very comfortable from the very first wear. Very little break in time. But get more comfortable with more wear. People like the way these look. Wore them to Christmas dinner and told my family I would wear them to do some work in and they scolded me for possibly ruining such a nice boot. So, took their advice and wear them a bit lighter then the Redwing.
    Still a very solid boot that is nice to get around in, and believe should last a long time.
    All in all I enjoy wedge sole boots for work or anything else. Just my opinion.
    Once again thanks, happy new year, and God Bless.

    I wouldn't wear them to work right out of the box. But you could wear to a desk job or to school since you get plenty of time to sit and rest. I would wear mine for about 4 hrs on the Saturday during fall/winter and for short errands like weekly groceries. Don't rush the break in but make an effort to wear them for at least 4-5hrs per week , and with all leather shoes, let them rest after for 24hrs with cedar shoe tree to soak up the days foot moisture and maintain the shape.

    I wear heritage iron rangers.
    The trick to wearing in the footbed is to let your feet sweat in there and let the leather mold to you. It takes a while, but after the break in, they are your own boots molded to your feet and they are plenty comfortable.

    I bought a 2nd hand pair last week, i received them yesterday & wore them for an hour. After the hour i got home and took them off i had a nasty cut on my heel where the top of the stitched in heel collar was rubbing when I was walking. I have bought 3 pairs of merino wool hiking socks with pads where the heels are so I can wear these boots without pain. I have also bought a roll of duct tape to put on my heels before i put on my socks. I hope this info helps anyone who also feels pain in the heels when wearing them.

    I've had 875s for about a year and a half now. I wear them all of the time. I've even hunted with,them. i,just put on a pair of gators over them. I love these boots. I would recommend these things for any construction type work other them cement work. The leather will just get too scratched up. If you are into iron work, home building or roofing I think this is a great boot to consider. The down side is they took me a while to break in. I wore them a few hours a day for the fist month. I have conditioned and oiled them 3 times since I got them. after a month or two they felt great and I haven't looked back since. I do wear a orthotic insole. I didn't like the leather sole. Also after a year and a half of constant wear I am thinking I should have the boots resoled sometime over the next year. they are wearing down. But like I said I have been wearing them a lot. They are pricey, so do your research. There are plenty of great brands out there if this is above your price point.

  • @matthewsbernier
    @matthewsbernier 8 років тому +3

    I find they work on the same principle as birkenstocks, which makes sense, as on both you're breaking in the cork underneath a layer of leather. I find them immediately comfortable, and they only get moreso. Then again, I find that the kind of cushioned urethane footbeds you're into give me a lot of foot pain, so your milage may vary.

  • @high5en

    I own a pair of Iron Rangers and they took about two weeks to break in with everyday wear. The leather on the moc toe boots is a thicker, tougher leather. I recently purchased a pair of 875's at the local Redwing store and can already tell that the break in period will be considerably longer than my Iron Rangers. With that said, breaking in boots is just the nature of the beast. The benefits in the end outweigh the discomfort of a break in period. These boots are timeless. If you are thinking about buying a pair of these, you really cant go wrong.

    I saw these in a store today (20th October 2017) and couldn’t help but get hold of them. I thought I would prefer the more rounded Red Wing boots, but on seeing these in person I ‘had' to have them. The leather on these boots appear to be of a similar, perhaps slightly inferior, quality to Loake. Though obviously the Red Wing is specially treated as The Boot Guy says. I would end up paying more for these boots than I would for Loake, which seem slightly better quality, simply because I want a good pair of American made boots. Red Wing 8138 are very aesthetically pleasing and are far more attractive to the average person than a traditional looking brogue boot. The boots are harsh on the achilles heel, but it doesn’t bother me too much. They are reminiscent of my pair of Dr. Martens, which took me about two weeks to break in. People say Dr. Martens take months to break in, but they don’t walk like I do. I will walk more in a week than the average person does in the month. So here is to the next two to three weeks. A bit of pain here and there did nobody any harm. It’s part of the process of owning a quality boot. I would advise, as with all boots, to try and give your boots a rest.

    I'm 44 and have never really been a boot wearer. I like my Merrell Moab shoes for most days. I decided to give boots a try and bought the Red Wing Blacksmith. I went in for full days of wearing to break them in. I've got about 6 full days so far and they are getting better. Still a ways to go. I keep hoping the next day is the one where I say to myself they are broken. I really like them, but hard to compare against anything else since I've always worn comfortable out of the box fabric style shoes like the Merrells.

    I am a newbie to the leather hobby but it took me around 10 wears to slightly break them in, especially areas around the ankle and the heels. The front of the boot was really spacious and comfortable so there were no problems for me. My ankles hurt like hell tho, even with thick socks during the first 3 wears. my 8138 is still barely a month old but its comfortable as hell now.

    I have been wearing Red Wings since 1995 best tip for breaking them in is do not tie the laces too tight the first 5-6 times of wearing them, after that oil them lock tight and you are good to go for years

    Recently acquired a pair of these, And to start the “Breakin in” process i went on my usual walk
    of around 3.5 miles, Way to eager my heals are raw as hell, Bleeding To.
    The boots seem to fit fine, But the blisters came from a slight bit of
    movement in the heel & the leather in the heel being really stiff,
    Anyone else have this type of experience, Please leave a comment..

    I have owned this boot for a year. Break in is a snitch. IMO they are super comfortable from the box. (if you where the right socks) Always wear wool socks with redwing boots. I have had 3 types of work boots and 2 heritage. These were the most comfortable at the start.
    (update) After reading the comments. I am assuming but you HAVE to wear wool socks! Night and Day difference!
    :) Enjoy

    also, your sock choice is crucial in wearing a "real" boot. get a good wool sock, redwing makes a pretty cushy one, for work wear. also, smartwool makes some incredible socks for different situations also. they keep your foot cool, dry, and properly cushioned. you'll have trouble with comfort if you miss this critical step.

    To be honest I don't find the leather they use on this specific moc toe very hard to break in. It's their boots that use the rough and tough leather that really beats your feet up. If your feet are properly measured and you buy the correct size you should not have a problem. I would get measured with a brannock device because that computer foot scanning machine they have at the redwing store has given me different sizes every time I've used it.

    • @TheBootGuyreviews
      @TheBootGuyreviews  8 років тому

      +hadin101 Thank you for your input. when I am selling any footwear.I like to use the customers current footwear as a starting point. Now,the scanning machine puts me at a 13E and the Braddock 11.5 D+. Now that's my foot. But when I comes to selling boots. I find that a few minutes getting some good hard fact's about the user helps to better fit them with a boot more so then any device or machine. But when I do industrial footwear sales of 100 plus employees. I use my own BRADDOCK device that I have had over 40000 different feet in. At this point I can trust this one machine. Kind of like a cabinet maker and his Starrit Square. But the most important thing is communication between you and the salesperson. If your lucky enough to get a someone who cares.

    You mention the fit but didn't describe the fit issue that you have with this model. Do the 8138's fit more like a Redwind 875 or more like a Redwing 1907? I bought a pair of 875's and didn't like the fit so I bought a pair of 1907's and really like the way they fit my foot. The 875's are too narrow and oversized where the 1907's is better suited to an average to wide foot but they run a half size too big.

    There is nowhere near enough oil in the uppers from the factory. they would take years to break in the way they come out of the box. Neatsfoot oil, A few hundred miles, and good light hiker wool socks is all you need. I also bought a foot fitter bunion stretcher for those tight spots after the boot is fully broken in. I hiked to the top of the smoky mountains tallest waterfall less than a week after I had my 1907's.

    boot guy, what 6"wedge boot do you like the best? Red Wing, Wolverine, Thorogood, or Golden Fox? Looking for a pair, your input is appreciated!

      +Matthew A. The most practical for the price is Thorogood 4200. If on a budget golden fox. Pure classic and wanting to complete a look redwing.

      OK, now consider this. A truck driver, an OLD truck driver, whose day is more walking than actually driving. Climb up the truck, climb down the truck. (20+ times a day) Walk 65' back to the trailer, walk 65' back to the truck. Walk 1/4 mile to the office, walk 1/4 mile back to the truck. Which one? (no foot problems - just old, tired feet) PS- Currently a Diehard oxford believer. Help. Please.

    I dont understand how tough thick leather that you have to break in always equates to not being a good boot in these reveiws that's what I want tough thick leather that will last so far the danner bullrun leather performed the best for me. In 20 years as a Carpenter the longest a boot has lasted me is 8 months

    what is the difference between this but and the diehard boot they sell at sears? Besides the price. They seem to have the same shape, tread, color. Can you please explain it to us? Thank you.

    • @drunkinmaster1
      @drunkinmaster1 7 років тому +2

      I thought the same thing until i saw the die-hard boots in person.
      The sears boots looks like garbage compared to the redwings.
      Just the leather quality alone was enough to end it, but the die-hard also looks way blockier and not nearly as attractive as the redwing.

    • @czynski3
      @czynski3 7 років тому

      I don't know about the differences but I can tell that I have owned the Diehards for 3 years now. I can't kill them. Can't kill the upper leather or the sole. I've worm them so many miles that the only I wear out is the pigskin inners.

    Questions: Just purchased a pair of these boots (they are beautiful), should I oil them for assisting with the break in? And if so, what oil do you recommend?

    • @TheBootGuyreviews
      @TheBootGuyreviews  8 років тому +1

      I would say wear them for a few weeks and get the leather to shape to your foot. I like this kit from redwing [ amzn.to/29B2CRg ] . mink oil and other waterproofing products like [ amzn.to/29Gj2de - amzn.to/29wgRJC ]
      I only use in the wet and cold seasons. but that's not to say that some might have better information on how "THEY " care for their redwings. If your good to your boots they will be good to you.

    Easily the most uncomfortable boot I've ever owned/worn. Is there a way to replace the insole on these? It seems like its glued on and there's no way I'll wear them again without swapping out insoles first.

    Hi TheBootGuy! Looking at picking up some 8883's. I need to know about sizing. I own 2 pairs of thorogood heritage black moc toes size 7 d. Will a 7 d in the red wing be comparable? Thanks for you vids. You're the reason I picked the thorogoods up. I love em! Thanks again.

    • @TheBootGuyreviews
      @TheBootGuyreviews  7 років тому

      +Mini Gemini I don't see why not. But ready to down size. I have found the 8883 to be just a tad bigger. But, when I was trying them on. I was wearing a smartwool dress wool socks. Much thinner then my regular sock. By going down that half size I felt like the boot was made for me. But given the fact that 7D is we're they start. You might be adding an Insole.

    • @jackiehorn9668
      @jackiehorn9668 7 років тому

      Thanks for the reply. I wear medium/heavy merino wool socks everyday. I'm currently wearing treadlabs inserts for plantar fasciitis so 7 d when it stretches will be right on the money.

    don't soak these boots. just wear them. they aren't concrete blocks. get them sized right, and you may spend two days breaking them in, but that would be all the discomfort you'll have to endure. red wings are the $hit. don't eff around with inferior products. especially if you have to wear them every day.
