I really enjoyed Furiosa. Loved learning more about the Wasteland and the Green Place. Furiosa was one of my favorites in the Mad Max series. I also liked Beyond the Thunderdome.
They’re only coming across as divisive because the grumpy old red pillers are back again in full force. NO MEL NO MAD MAX. CGI SUCKS. NOBODY WANTED A FURIOSA STORY WAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH yeah these movies aren’t divisive we just have intolerable troglodytes incapable of absorbing film. This film destroys and I didn’t even expect Miller to up the ante. 🔥
George Miller actually wrote the script for FURIOSA before FURY ROAD. He let Charlize Theron read the Furiosa script so she had a better understanding of the character for Fury Road.
Thank you for the review that distinguishes between the existential crisis of the movie industry and box office success, and the masterful craft of George Miller and Furiosa. This film had me from the moment the apple was picked until the seed was planted. The action is easily the best I have seen in a long time. Let's hope the Mad Max universe expands with another film.
LOVED this movie. Saw it twice already. Honestly really sad it’s not gaining traction and people are just writing it off. I loved Dune part 2 but I actually enjoyed this film MORE.
Great video Sydney, I really think Furiosa is one of my favorites this year. Chris Hemsworth may be good as Thor but whenever he plays a villain, he absolutely shines.
Always thought Fury Road was really good-not great. Was shocked how much I LOVED Furiousa. It dove in and delivered the character investment that Fury Road eluded to. I’m finally a fury Road truther! Just started reading the book Blood Sweat and Chrome which is all about the Fury Road Production-INSANE! Highly recommend!

Best movie of the year and best action sequence of all time! Desert action overwhelming Dune 1.2 is sucked into the sand with the sound of a heart-throbbing engine
Loved it! For all the reasons you stated. Chris Hemsworth was so good as a villain and you're right Anya Taylor-Joy spoke so little words, but conveyed much!! Also the chemistry so good between Burke and Joy. Here are my top reasons people should watch -The epic action, stunning cinematography, brilliant performances, Immersive world-building and the emotional depth!
I went into it with the thought that prequels are usually like add-ons to the main piece, was not expecting a film bigger than anything we'd seen in this universe before. A terrific suprise, and with some suprisingly humorous moments unlike the previous as well.
It was amazing! If anything for a movie that was 128 minutes long I feel like it was extremely well paced & man I could have easily watched another hour of this movie😭
I think I'll be seeing it again. I really enjoyed it with Fury Road being one of my favorite films of all time. This felt bigger than Fury Road from a narrative standpoint and while it can be a bit slow at times, it also felt very ambitious and stylish. Hoping we get one more film from George Miller set in the Wasteland, Mad Max or otherwise.
So sad and disappointing that this film failed at the box office. People just don’t recognize excellence anymore. They would show up for badly made Fast and Furious movie but not this.
And the question you should ask yourself is why. Why matters. And btw this isn't excellence. If you need something recent to define excellence then use something like Dune for comparison. But I'll help you here with the answer. How many people do you think want to see a movie with 'A mad max saga' in the name and not actually see mad max? If this was actually a mad max film you realize this would be a billion dollar movie right? What demographic is it that you think pays to see action thriller type films? Do you think that demographic wants to see a girl boss movie? No especially in this climate and it doesn't matter whatsoever about what people feel that demographic should want.. it's about what they are willing to pay for. It's really very simple. If you want a movie to be successful then you give the target audience what they want to see not what you think they should see.

My initial reaction is that I actually like Furiosa just as much as Fury Road. It is the perfect complement and underpinning for everything that happens in Fury Road. Furiosa is the movie that draws the bowstring back and Fury Road lets the arrow fly. I would absolutely love to see both as a double feature (start with Furiosa, end with Fury Road) in a theater at some point in the future.
Great review! I thought Furiosa was a really immersive experience in world building and myth. I was kinda thrown off by its pace at first and how much it explored its world compared to how lean the other Mad Max movies are, but I think that made it into a challenging but rewarding movie.
Apart from loving the new movie I got the unexpected bonus of going home and watching the last one again,it making sense and being a much better movie with an actual story making sense
Thanks for a great review. There should be more reviews from women on Furiosa, since its protagonist is the fiercest woman you can imagine. I don't rate movies but if I had to, this would make my top five ever. I'm really that much in love with this one :)
It's a four I think for me but I agree with basically everything you said! I think Fury Road is just such an iconic masterpiece, there's so many individual frames and lines that were delivered so well in that movie. This movie deserves more attention than it's getting for sure, I was so excited to see more of Furiosa because she was my favorite character from Fury Road and Anya Taylor-Joy killed it. So did Hemsworth, when I saw him cast I was honestly slightly worried but now that I've seen it I thought he was well cast and solid. Great film!
Excellent commentary Sydney as usual! I totally agree. Fury Road was more of a brilliant cinematic ride, whereas Furiosa was more narrative-based. Nevertheless still enjoyable.
I saw it last night, loved it, and people complaining about the pacing are crazy to me! Yes it puts much more emphasis on character and world building than Fury Road did, but it is still like 75% action!
And not only that, everything about the action is character-driven, I really cared when going was tough and there are so many rich images in the more silent moments as well. Also, Fury Road gets a whole new suit of emotional beats if you have watched Furiosa. In my opinion, this is a masterclass prequel.
I looked at my watch like 3 times during the movie. And I like slow burn horror movies. The chapters made it more obvious. And why did we run out of time at the end, to the point where voiceovers were used to exposition dump.? For a movie that seemed so long it was rushed at the end.. is that not a pacing issue? Well Sydney since George Miller has consistently made well made post apocalyptic movies with the Mad Max movie series is why he would be perfect to direct a Rated R hardcore violent faithful Double Dragon Reboot that has a consistent serious tone, and is based on the Double Dragon arcade game. It would be set in a post apocalyptic New York City similar to Escape From New York.
Fury Road was visually awesome but the movie didn't connect with me. Enter 'Furiosa' my Queen, my darkest of angels. Loved it. Also gave a 4.5. ATJ is awesome and Tom Burke holy shit was my biggest surprise of the film. He reminds me of a cross between Clive Owen and Gerard Butler, yes please. Thanks for another great review Sydney. Have fun in L.A.
Sounds awesome, I didn’t even know I wanted more mad max movies after the trilogy but fury road was a masterpiece saw it on original release and the black & chrome release
In many ways, I found Furiosa to be a superior experience compared to Fury Road. The Mad Max universe feels even more expansive and yet more intimate and layered. Furiosa compelled me to revisit Fury Road. An outstanding prequel.
This movie kicks ass ! I think it’s a future classic . Some claiming it’s woke but couldn’t be further from the truth . Most forget miller been talking about this before fury road even came out .
@@SydneyVolpe Anya like Theron is a legit talent not there for looks . Noticed her in the Witch but really became a fan when I saw Split she gave a Jodie Foster multi-layered nuanced performance . I love actors who are chooses on their roles and conscious of their filmography. Admittedly when I heard casting I thought she was too small framed to be bad ass . Her performance sells the writing and never did I find her doing anything physically impossible. The fights were natural …. Well by mad max heightened reality standards 😆. Furiosa had a strong story , and only exist cause Miller wanted to tell it . Max is not sidelined or being replaced . Best action film I’ve seen seen M.I. Fallout I predict this one will have legs at box office but am surprised it’s underperformed this weekend .
I was binge watching the entire mad Max movie collection to get prepared to watch Furiosa and Furiosa paid off tremendously I went and saw it in the cinema twice because of how much I loved it I think George Miller is a visionary and a great storyteller I still don’t understand the negative backlash it’s been getting there’s nothing in the movie that’s inherently feminist. It just has really really good well-made performances with strong, independent characters living in a dog eat dog world. I also think this might be my favorite Chris Hemsworth role?
I’ve seen it 3 times already. Twice in Dolby and once in IMAX. The Dolby projector’s color balance was majorly messed up both times 😩. My second viewing was IMAX and the pacing issues you mentioned (that I also felt on first watch) were not present at all - it flew by. Next up, 4DX because I heard some neat stuff re: blood splatter.
@@SydneyVolpe I watched it twice so far First time was sitting right in the centre being practically shaken out of my seat by the audio The second time was in the back row of the cinema where the CGI was less distracting but also felt like the richness of what was happening on screen came through much much more
Saw this Friday, thought it was great. Didn't plan this, but ended up watching Fury Road again a few hours later. Looking around Max for something to watch and they had the Black & Chrome version listed, which I hadn't seen before. Took that as a sign that I had to watch it, and it wasn't as crazy an idea (the B&W) as I thought it would be. Sadly, the blu-ray copy of the B&C seems to be very much out of print (unless I want to spend a few days pay for it).
Wow! Talk about being at the right place at the right time. I enjoyed this movie as well, even though it was a little too long. Fury Road cannot be topped, but Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy were fantastic in this one.
I live in LA and if you love movies you are going to have a great time going to all kinds of premieres and meet all kinds of people in the industry once you know where to look like the New Beverly or the Burbank 16 where you saw Furiosa. If you can handle the craziness of the traffic or how expensive it can be you will be fine.
absolutely LOVE both of these movies. i do think Fury Road is better (or at least more entertaining) with that being said the VFX in Furiosa did kinda take me out of it at least in a few scenes. i watched fury road last night and definitely preferred that style more than furiosa. my opinion on why its underperforming though has everything to do with i just dont think that many ppl care about mad max. fury road made 380 million, not a small number at all but i would never expect a prequel to make anywhere close to its predecessor. the fact they gave furiosa MORE budget just boggles my mind. talking with people at work today and a lot of them have no interest in seeing it or are saying they will just wait till streaming which makes me so sad bc this movie is phenomenal. seeing it again in imax today
Probably going to get hate for this, but I've never seen a single Mad Max movie. (Even my brother was asking wtf I was doing jumping in at a prequel lol.) Gotta say, as an outsider, this movie peeked my interest into the series. Also, Anya slays in literally everything I've seen her in, so mad respect to her abilities as an actress.
i loved it, though not quite as much as i fucking love Fury Road. you make compelling arguments for Miller's style in this one & i am sold. Anya was great, but i really miss Charlize in the role. i hope we see that again some day. i am a Furiosa disciple.
Charlize is so good, may prefer her as well but it was cool to see a younger version that preceded the maturity we see in Fury Road. I wonder if we will get to see her back in Wasteland!
I Saw the TV Glow doesn't appeal to me but I've now seen it as most people's number 1 of the year's "so-far" lists I've seen. I guess I have to check it out... Furiosa is one of my favorite movies, straight up. Fury Road is still above it. Not an action fan otherwise, not even of the original Mad Max movies. Dune 2 is great though, easily Vill's best imo.
I thought it was pretty good. I think I liked it less than you. My first reaction is that I may not want to see it again; reason being that there doesn’t seem to be so many layers to the film. Also, the whole thing was a rather unpleasant ordeal. Well made film though, couldn’t give it less than 8/10 for effort. My more critical IMDB type rating would be a 7.2
Saw it last night. 8/10 for me. Pretty good. I will say though that I think they could have used Charlize for the role.. We didn't need Charlize to be looking perfectly 25 years younger, some simple yet professional touch ups would have likely been fine for most scenes. Charlize has aged well too making it easier. Miller was not convinced with the technology to reduce actors in age as seen in other films like Gemini Man, and I agree. But we wouldn't have needed that drastic of a change to have it be believable. I wouldn't at least. Airbrushing out a few wrinkles, dying her hair etc. Easy peasy. Also, she's only shown as an adult for 1/3 or 1/2 of the movie making for less scenes to edit. Anya did a pretty good job, but I came away from the theater really missing Charlize. I guess it's a thing where I cant look past the already iconic actor who played that role. I hope to god we get a trliogy. At least 1 more sequel with Charlize playing a main role as Furiosa. I think Max should be the main character going forward with Furiosa (Charlize) as the main supporting character. Go see the movie if you haven't. Support the whole cast and crew. We need those sequels!
Nah it wouldn't have looked right with Charlize, even though she's still beautiful you still would need a younger woman but I think they should of did a sequel with Max first then a movie with Furiosa and then ended it off with this prequel. A lot of people that are complaining are crying because the wanted a movie with MAX and to wait these long for another Mad Max movie after such a masterpiece like Fury Road, I can see why people might get mad. I know when they first announced this prequel I was like why the hell didn't they just do a movie with Charlize instead? But I agree with u it's a 8 but I can see why it's bombing in the box office because a lot of people don't want to give it a chance because Max or Charlize isn't in it
Its under performing at box office cause people have bigger worries than wasting money on movies. Like food and water Other than that, this movie would be killing it at the box office.
Some argue that women don't generally care for these kind of movies even with a female lead because they are not familiar with the IP. Do you agree with this? I'm a fan of Anya Taylor-Joy but I don't think either her or Hemsworth are huge box office draws.
I love Fury Road and I wanna see more Mad Max movies. I don't wanna Prequel. It feels like the story is pointless. Like Rogue One and Solo we don't need every single backstory. I wanna see Furiosa after Fury Road.
The pacing threw me off as well. I’m sure upon a rewatch the movie will become the perfect other half to Fury Road in my eyes. Much like Dune Part 1+2.
I want to bring my 10 year old to see it, he loves zombies and things like that, he also really liked fury road, is furiosa too intense for a 10 year old do you think? They're pretty understadning of movies and it not being really and just being something people make up for entertainment purposes but the R rating is questionable for me right now.
Probably. Some spoilers. A man is drawn into 5 by motorcycles. A man has a tree grow out of his still alive body. And probably worst. A maggot farmer is shown up close extracting live maggots from mutilated corpses. I wouldn't suggest it for a 10 yo.
Anya has confirmed in an intercview that they have used deepfake to make her eyes and other face structure to look like Charlize in some scenes. Won't be surprise if they deepfake voice to maker her sound like Charlize.
Slight correction. They used cgi to morph Alyla Brownes face into Anyas as she ages. They did not attempt to make Anya look like Charlize. Which you can tell just by looking at it. They look nothing alike in the film.
Well I have seen it and it was most metallist film I have ever seen on the big screen and it was a great experience What do you think Why are people not going to see it
There have been a lot of different reasons thrown around on twitter, too expensive to go to the movies, didn’t like Fury Road, some have outright said they don’t want to watch a female lead haha. Glad you liked it!
Just no one is going to theaters anyone. People can’t even afford groceries for their families in this economy. People are going to stop doing things all together. They are bleeding us dry. Not surprised it was the worst box office in history. Also no one has time to go to the theaters because they need to work more hours and make more money. Never ending cycle
Hey Sydney, great you are having fun in LA , thank you for your review. I saw Furiosa last Friday here in Spain. It was disappointing, I am sorry to say, It has little to do with FURY ROAD, Taylor Joy is a favorite of mine but she has little to do here. Tom Burke looks very uncharismatic as her love interest, Hemsworth nose, very distracting, not menacing at all as a villain, just kind of an idiot really. The film was fast and well done but frustrating in so many respects. I adore FURY ROAD I consider it a master piece and Furiosa is just an entertaining story. Take care Sydney.

Nothing will ever top Road Warrior, or Fury Road for that matter.
In the words of a character in mad max. It's mediocre like the first film
George Miller actually wrote the script for FURIOSA before FURY ROAD. He let Charlize Theron read the Furiosa script so she had a better understanding of the character for Fury Road.
I watched it today. I truly loved it. This is probably the best Western movie of all times. They nailed it
I noticed that Anya changed her walk to emulate Charlize’s walk. That was a nice thing to do to bridge those two performances together.
I couldn't tell if Charlize was voicing her lines, or if Anya did an incredible job of sounding like Charlize. It was distractingly perfect lol.
Best film of the year so far. Love it.

Jack was cold as ice. I hated how we all knew (I think) that he was gonna go as soon as he stuck his neck out for Furiosa. RIP
Exactly, Miller clearly wants to explore the character more it isn’t some girl boss replacement haha she just rocks!
Fallout
I predict this one will have legs at box office but am surprised it’s underperformed this weekend .
I loved it and it makes Fury Road even better now that we understand all that motivation of Furiosa.
Hey Sydney, are you planning on making a video on ‘I Saw the TV Glow’?
Yes that is planned for my next video!! Im a bit late on it but hoping to encourage more people to see it🤞🏼
It was fair at best. Dementus, by far, was the best character in the film . Completely unhinged ...
Favourite film of the year so far
Great video too!
Damn that projection stuff the worst, but glad to hear it plays out even better on the second watch! Haha the 4DX sounds insane
@@SydneyVolpe I watched it twice so far
First time was sitting right in the centre being practically shaken out of my seat by the audio
The second time was in the back row of the cinema where the CGI was less distracting but also felt like the richness of what was happening on screen came through much much more
Saw this Friday, thought it was great.
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. There was just a couple of cgi scenes that were a bit cheesy and not well done. Day 1 4k purchase
Hopefully you move to LA soon. I need a film analysis buddy 😊
Wow! Talk about being at the right place at the right time. I enjoyed this movie as well, even though it was a little too long. Fury Road cannot be topped, but Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy were fantastic in this one.
4.5/5 on first watch for me! But 5/5 on my rewatch last night! What a picture
Loved this film...❤
I loved this movie! I might see it again. Great performances from everyone in it.
Prolly the greatest prequel of all time!
Just saw it today. Excellent movie!!!
It’s the first Mad Max prequel, and is going to have an impressive action scenes.
I’m excited to see it tomorrow :)
Have fun Jose!!
@@SydneyVolpejust got back it was hella fun experience :)
8.5/10, amazing film!!
This was a great movie. Have a great time in LA, that's the right place for you and your career.
Thanks so much, glad you liked the movie!!
absolutely LOVE both of these movies. i do think Fury Road is better (or at least more entertaining) with that being said the VFX in Furiosa did kinda take me out of it at least in a few scenes. i watched fury road last night and definitely preferred that style more than furiosa. my opinion on why its underperforming though has everything to do with i just dont think that many ppl care about mad max. fury road made 380 million, not a small number at all but i would never expect a prequel to make anywhere close to its predecessor. the fact they gave furiosa MORE budget just boggles my mind. talking with people at work today and a lot of them have no interest in seeing it or are saying they will just wait till streaming which makes me so sad bc this movie is phenomenal. seeing it again in imax today
This was soooo good
I think Fury Road is undeniably the bigger cinematic accomplishment, but I enjoyed Furiosa more, ya know?
I get that!! I loved both, I think Fury Road might be the better movie but Furiosa has so much more to chew on!
It’s a fantastic movie
i loved it, though not quite as much as i fucking love Fury Road. you make compelling arguments for Miller's style in this one & i am sold.
Loved this movie
Like food and water
Other than that, this movie would be killing it at the box office.
"2 legendary actresses..." really?! Anya Taylor is legendary? WTF?!
Rarely is anything explained in the max movies and that’s great.
Truly
I want to bring my 10 year old to see it, he loves zombies and things like that, he also really liked fury road, is furiosa too intense for a 10 year old do you think? They're pretty understadning of movies and it not being really and just being something people make up for entertainment purposes but the R rating is questionable for me right now.
Probably. Some spoilers. A man is drawn into 5 by motorcycles. A man has a tree grow out of his still alive body. And probably worst. A maggot farmer is shown up close extracting live maggots from mutilated corpses. I wouldn't suggest it for a 10 yo.
Don't, this movie has very dark themes , including an attempt to SA a child.
This movie deserves more do you think more will come after seeing the box office situation
Oh, what a day, what a lovely day! 💀
It was great!
which are your top 5 movies of the year, you said this is number 3.
My top 5 are:
I Saw the TV Glow
Dune Part 2
Furiosa
Challengers
Monkey Man
Watched it, awesome movie
Nice video Syd, what bugs me most is that people continue to use the term ‘woke’ when it comes to representations of movies. It’s got to stop.
Anyone know how does it look on imax?
I really hope Miller gets the chance to make Mad Max: Wasteland
Good luck in L.A.!!
@7:30 “make him Snake immediately” you’re also an MGS fan?! I think I’ve found my future wife!
I thought it was a great movie!
I loved it
Yayyy
Ridiculous that Garfield is doing better than Furiosa what is this world coming too?
Lol well there’s also def something to be said for Furiosa being rated R, and there aren’t too many options for kids/families right now
