  • Samsung recently introduced the M8, a new 32-inch 4K display that's priced at $700, making it less than half as expensive as the Studio Display from Apple. We picked up one of the displays and thought we'd compare it to the Studio Display in our latest video to see how it performs and whether you can save some money by going with a cheaper option.

I think both monitors have very different target markets, but I still can't get over the fact that airplay works so well on the M8 but doesn't on the Studio Display. Such a basic, useful feature that Apple should've integrated in their displays.

"for $699 the M8 is perfectly fine for 99% of you out there who don't work in some high end studio. If you do work in high end studio, I would love to recommend a different monitor overall" This is how small the Studio Display's market is.

Great review! I agree on all fronts. Apple Studio display is "better" than Samsung's M8 but probably not $700-more better for the average user. 27" limitation on the Studio display, plus restricted stand was a huge nonstarter for me. I got Dell's U4320Q just before the M8 was released. I would've purchased the latter if that were an option; it's not like I need a 43" monitor! Still, I am 100% satisfied with the Dell, which pairs nicely with my 16" M1 Pro. (By the way, I prefer the mic sound of the Studio Display but the M8 webcam, which Apple may trump at some point with their promised update to correct the image quality of the cam. Just my two cents.)

Apple wins in build quality, the mic is better, the webcam seems a bit worse, speakers are better. But Samsung has better features like the Monitor OS and removable webcam. Given that Apple's monitor has a full blown A13 inside + 64 GB of storage, Apple could've implemented a full-blown Apple monitor OS (with apps and a dope interface) + airplay. A missed opportunity by Apple for sure. I say Samsung's monitor is cooler than Apple's, even if Apple has better build quality and visual fidelity.

I think it’s really weird that Apple put an A13 chip into the Studio Display and it doesn’t have any smart functions. If I were shopping for a new monitor the M8 would be near the top of my list… The studio display as well if I could find a good deal on a used or refurbished one. I would be replacing a 27” Thunderbolt Display I bought used in 2015 which has held up very well, and looks great for a 7 year old monitor. I think that’s were the Aluminum and glass build kind of give the studio display an edge… It looks like a monitor that will still look really good years later.

Not sure if it’s been asked, but is the VA vs IPS difference obvious? I mostly do productivity work, but I also do a fair bit of (semi-professional) photography. Is the M8, being a VA panel, not a good choice for photography? Or has the tech improved enough that it can be calibrated to provide fairly accurate/even color?

I use video conferencing all the time. No one ever talks much about that in these reviews. I don't care about TV at all. In fact, I hate TV for the most part.
Apple made a big deal about video conferencing, but their video quality was severely impaired by the gimmicky idea -- which I think is kind of cool, but would almost never use probably -- of center stage.
On the other hand, they advertised their quality microphones and speakers and the ease of using video conferencing like zoom, webinar, webex, skype, and I use all of those and video chatting in other platforms as well. And I do make video lessons as a teacher as well. Video color matching is irrelevant, but quality of video & audio input and output is important to some extent.
But although I've watched multiple videos comparing the studio display to other monitors, they always focus on the video quality for video editors and professional photographers and barely mention what video conferencing would be like on the studio display or on any alternatives. It's kind of frustrating.

The samsung price is great, but honestly I returned it the same day it arrived. Its ok for a dorm room, or for kids but its not worth even the so called low price for $700. See it in person with a computer connected before buying esp on an all white web page like google and you will see how bad it is.

I'd not be in the market for the Apple Display, and have seen the M8 before. I'm currently running dual Philips 276E8VJSB 27", 4K running @ 3008x1692... which I modified with VESA mounts, driven by my MacBookPro18,2 (M1 Max) via Caldigit USB-C Pro dock. I've also have Logitech HD Webcam C525 - that no longer works well with macOS ( keeps dropping out, no longer works over hubs & docks) - so been buying sub-$30 web cameras to test. I didn't like the audio or video on either Apple's or the M8 (the sub-30s all have horrible/un-usable audio). But the M8's probably usable with zoom's non-HD & crop setting for video. I no longer rung with the claim shell closed (to leverage the finger print scanner), so I current use the MBPs speakers & mic. The 276E8VJSB doesn't have speakers, but does have a mini-stero out/passthrough over DisplayPort.
I'm in the market for a larger 4k display, as my 40+ yr old eyes are needing more magnification, but the M8 is over kill for me - but like a nice option for someone without a TV (I have a 75" 4k TV), and just wants to run single monitor. I previously had (have still have) the LG 34UM95-P , thunderbolt monitors (i have like 3 or 4 working right now, bought used) - and enjoyed the thunderbolt daisy chaining. And still by far, one my favorite displays ever. Both Philips & LG have horrible OSD & controls, some of the worse ever. I just don't need to use them frequently.
But the M8's is likely out for me. The lack of VESA mount is a non-starter (my monitors are on arms), and I'm ok modifying a $280 display, not likely a $700. Additionally, I'd want two, and since I already have a thunderbolt dock with dual full-size DisplayPorts - I have an issue paying the $200-300 premium per monitor over a 32" 4k 10bit DisplayPort monitor. And finally, the 65 W PD is fine for 13 &14" MacBooks/MacBook Pros - for a single cable docking solution to a MBP 16" ... at least 85w is need. IMHO - 100W PD should be standard, with 120-150W in 2023+ future models.
For a single monitor, business solution as an IT manager for non-engineering staff, I've deployed two Philips Brilliance 279P1 27" Frameless Monitors - they are NOT 10bit, and despite the Amazon listing saying they are 65w PD, they actually do provide 100W PD. For one employee, replaced her dying Apple ThunderBolt (2) display. Both had employees gave positive reviews.

I think the only miss for Samsung was that lack of better quality speakers. What a home run opportunity that was well within their grasp. Everything up to someone who needs high refresh or pro quality color matching. Otherwise, BOOM!

I’d be more interested in build quality and longevity. I tried getting a 48” monitor, but all three were defective on arrival. Ironically, they were all Samsung models. I have an apple Cinema Display that has travelled all over the world, and actually still works fine, despite dropping 2m through a glass desk. It has a half inch of dead pixels as a result, and lots of stuffing. I can’t get the original stand on anymore either, and the resolution is pretty poor by modern standards. For work I need much more real estate than the 27” display offers me, hence I want to upgrade. However, the build quality has impressed me, big time. I’m worried that my negative experiences with Samsung have twisted my view against any Samsung monitor, but the price point is good.

It’s fine, but I still long for the display on my decade old iMac. Apple screens are just so crisp. The PPI difference matters on a productivity monitor. It may elsewhere as well, but productivity is my use case. The one thing that does irritate me about the Studio Display is just having one input. I think that is about as absurd as it gets for productivity monitors. I have to have my work PC. No choice. As many others I am sure, I also own a Mac. I think of different things for what I'm looking for in a monitor. I don't need a high refresh rate. I'd prefer something with color accuracy. The other things are nice-to-haves. Every now and then I'd like to watch a movie without needing speakers. The aluminum and glass construction feels more solid than most monitors, and the display works flawlessly with the studio itself.
It's like I say, if everyone were caught up on numbers alone, we'd all be power users.

This is an apples and oranges (or Samsung LOL) comparison ... the M8 is a great design and deal for low end with 32 inch display. The Studio Display is higher rez, higher nits, higher build quality device. I assess the M8 to be a great deal for the price and the Studio Display to be a poor deal for the price. But the Studio Display is clear overall winner on build, resolution, brightness.

M8 is good the only problem i have with this monitor is the color degradation i found out later its using VA panel not IPS the main reason i return. If you use it straight up and at least 3 feet viewing distance this is perfect if you use it 2 feet you will see color degradation

I wish you showed what they look like side-by-side and compared the size a bit. Using a 32” monitor with 4K resolution set to 2x would make everything on the screen gigantic. Something like 1.5x would make everything more pixelated and you’d still have a giant screen taking up your desk space. Last thing I need in my home office is a TV! The Studio Display is the perfect size and the 5K makes everything look crisper.

The built in apps are so cranky I just gave up and now use the attached Apple TV exclusively. Parts of it started breaking down pretty quickly. The Samsung will come down in price. I've got my Mac mini Hooked up to a Hisense 43" TV. I can dial In the color in the TV settings. It is a VA panel but does have local dining. I'm retired and have OMPD, a form of muscular distropy the affects my eyes and throat. It weakens the eye lid muscles and throat muscles. The Apple display is better premium wise, but not everybody can afford it, plus the Apple monitor will stay at a premium maybe getting a 100.00 off a year from now. Plus the Samsung is 32" which means more real estate to bump up the scaling. Not everybody has 20/20 eye sight, especially when you get older.

The biggest selling point for me with this monitor is Productivity. The fact that I can have both my MacBook and PC hooked up at the same time and display them both on the screen, really changes the game for me. Even as an Operations Manager, I’m not in an environment that “requires” camera usage, so that doesn’t change a lot on my decision. Even if I do wish the mic was better. I’m interested to see if I am able to play with the colors or picture to get it as close to my MacBook as possible, since I do edit pictures and video, but either way, I expect wether I’m working or “playing”, the dual availability here is really going to be what knocks this out of the park….for me.

@@MattG1027 I'll be completely honest with you. I haven't used it much for the "TV" aspect at all outside of the first week of having it. Of course, everyone's use case is going to be different. I thought that I was going to use it all when I first purchased it, but I don't really use it much outside of a monitor at all really and outside of the few instances where I switch over to game mode and get a quick game or two in. So it's awesome from that standpoint. As far as watching movies or TV, the quality is subpar/"good" at best. Are there high positives about it, that I truly enjoy, yes, for sure, that's why I didn't bother returning it. But if there was a pro-tip I could give, especially if you're deciding between it and Dell, get the M8 through Best Buy when they release it, that way you can test it out first hand for the 14 days and decide from there if it lives up to your expectations.

@@paapaa Thanks for the input. Yea, thinking I'll get a lot of use out of the smart TV / airplay features is probably aspirational at best. But this would be for a bedroom at my parent's vacation home where I can imagine I'll want to do some remote work in the coming years. Figure it can double as a bedroom TV too, since the desk is at the foot of the bed. If this were for my home office, I'd definitely go with the Dell.
