  • Cindy contacted me as soon as the ink dried on the contract after she bought this home in Chula Vista just a few miles from my own!
An avid follower here on UA-cam, Cindy immigrated to SoCal from the San Francisco area.
Team DFS and I had a blast on this install a few years back and even jumped in the pool to cool off each day after work.
Cindy is a great plantswoman and a wonderful caretaker of her garden.
It has had its issues though.
The pilosocereus have turned a weird shade of yellow and the trigona in the front yard is pouting.
    Decisions, edits and adjustments.
    All in the life, amiright?

I live in The Land of Rain and More Rain, and I often put a smaller plastic pot upside down to take up space inside a larger decorative pot. The key to drainage is to cut some notches in the lip of the plastic pot before turning it upside down, so that water can enter at the bottom and go out the drain hole of the larger pot.

Here in Costa Rica we get rain from May to November so something that doesn't absorb water/keep humidity for too long works just fine; pumice, volcanic rock or perlite are perfect.

Laura, I can’t thank you and the DFS team for your daily videos. I look forward to seeing your video each night before I go to bed. I learn something new everyday from you. I am liking your recent videos of revisiting gardens you have installed to see progress. It reminds me to be patient with my succulents as I wait for then to grow. Your tireless efforts to give all your subscribers their daily dose is simply remarkable. Thanks so much to all of you!!!

I always use a good layer of drainage rocks in the bottom of my pots and I used unglazed terracotta pots which suck up any extra water. Haven't had any issues. Also can mix the rock through your soil.

That Alluaudia procera is my all time favorite in this garden. I love the shape. It’s this garden that made me wish I had one.
The “Elephant Foot” (sorry can’t remember the name)… it’s huge. Are you going to let it get bigger?! Can that one be trimmed down though? It’s base is so big.

Get a bit of old fly screen mesh, cover the drainage holes. This stop soil going out and ants getting in!
Fill 1/3 to half pot with broken up polystyrene from your packaging/mail.cover the polystyrene with another layer of flyscreen mesh to stop soil going through. Fill up with you soil and your ready to go.

We live in Central Illinois and my mother always used soda cans in the bottom of her large pots to conserve soil use. The first time I picked one up I almost threw it over my shoulder. I didn't realize how light it would be. That has worked for us.

Hi from Pine Mountain, Georgia. We have a very humid climate from the gulf. I seriously use a ratio of half river pebbles and half soil in my containers. We can't get away with just any soil mix and perlite. I must use pebbles and sand for a gritty mix or else everything suffers. Love succulents but hate my climate.

I add gravel until about half the height of the pot. Helps with drainage as well and helps saves my pocket from too ecpensive gritty soil mix here in the philippines. Hope it helps. 🥰🥰

The best bottom filler for pots is REDWOOD BARK CHUNKS (but do not use dyed bark). Allows free draining and efficiency to a finished pot.

I’ve popped broken up polystyrene into the bottom of big pots and plants have grown fine. It’s airy and water runs through without issues. I don’t jam pack it in though, and sometimes the dirt drops in the pot as it fills the spaces..

Here where i live rains most of the year, and i also use disposables to half fill my big pots, most of the time i use plastic disposable pots to fill my pots and i also use plastic bottles but i leave them with the bottle taps on. But first i put a cover of tezontle (lava) in the bottom and then the plastic pieces,

yyyyeah, that plastic tip had me lose a handful of plants. I had used cut-up strips of Amazon bubble mailers stacked vertically specifically to encourage drainage, but it just wasn’t good enough. oh well- live and learn.

Hi Laura, I may have missed you saying, but it may be helpful for you to say which direction the house is facing. I live in Southern California too. I see plants that I have that are doing much better here and maybe I need to move mine to my backyard. Thanks, I love your work.

If I lived just a couple hours further south this could be a possibility. I’m right in the middle of not cold enough for plants that need a cold period. Still cold enough that tropicals won’t make it.

Here on the Texas coast, l use hard Styrofoam balls , do not use the recycled peanuts, because in time they flatten and your soil will sink. Hard Styrofoam is best.
