Thank you Daniel for your tutorial on vibrato. I broke my left shoulder some years ago and find it gets tired when using vibrato. Your help is fantastic! I use a bookcase and books for support, which works beautifully, opening up a new realm of muscle memory in the left hand and shoulder. I can't thank you enough! Best wishes from Sheila ❤x❤
My main problem has always been tension in the left hand. This exercise substantially decreased the tension. This helps not only with vibrato, but with passages as well. Had to show my professor Dont's Caprice 17 and I used this method on the day of my lesson. Made a huge difference in a matter of minutes. Thank you, Mr. Kurganov!
great video ! (i think i read somewhere you started violin as a later teen... maybe that conscious development (more self aware) is why you can articulate the mechanics better than most)
Wow, this is a genius-level exercise. Esoteric while still accessible. And gotta admit, I laughed out loud when you mentioned the two violists looking for each other while tuning. Deadpan brilliance. Thank you Daniel for this gem!!
It's something I developed myself. I am sure similar ideas have been floating around, but I have never seen any deeper instruction for this kind of work. Thanks!
Yesterday I watched this video, and proceeded to have a breakthrough practice session. Thanks to your advice, I felt much more in tune with the instrument and aware of our exchange. I realized that a heightened playing ability comes with a heightened presence of mind. Before this video, I was literally breaking a sweat practicing vibrato because of how tense I was! But yesterday's practice was like a luxury spa session, it was so relaxing. Thanks friend!
Thank you very much for these tips, Daniel. They really do help those of us who have problems with 'our' vibrato. After playing for some decades (really) and playing AMEB (Australia) 6-8grade pieces I still haven't managed a good, effortless vibrato. I know that's crazy but it is not my first instrument and though I took proper lessons/instruction this, for some unknown reason, was not covered. You might really not realise how much a tip like the first one 'scroll support' has on one's practicing vibrato but I can tell you it has had a big impact for me.Thanks again for all your tips and help they really do, err, help. - Mark, Australia.
Excellent tips! External support really helps to free the left hand and develop the vibrato sensation for students. Thank you so much for all of this information. Great job!!
Your tips have really helped this beginning violinist. I have been working for almost two years and after watching your videos, I realized I wasn’t using enough natural weight in my arm. It has made a dramatic difference. So thank you!!!
Another great post 👍👍. I used to practice scroll support a lot, with a sock around the scroll, using a bookcase for support. Immensely effective exercises can result. Never tried the string method, but will incorporate 🙂. Your advice is excellent - detailed, well researched, and sound (literally!).
Awesome. This will be my focus for the next few weeks to target the tension. I just got my vibrato but I definitely need to take a few steps back and work harder at playing without tension. Thank you
An excellent focus! I always use this approach to re-calibrate vibrato if I'm not in shape, or to remove upper-body tension in general. Let me know how it goes!
Hi Daniel, thanks a lot for the professional tips that you are sharing for free on UA-cam. I have watched all your videos and eagerly wait for the new ones. And I'm practicing your tips too. There are many who can't afford to get access to such information. May God bless you abundantly and give you loads of success. A request, can you please make a video that gives information about all the violin techniques a student has to learn? Please name the techniques in Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced categories. And also please if you could arrange them in like a chronological order so that we get an organized list of which technique (in every category) we start with and then move on to the second technique and the third and so on. Like an in depth list of techniques that are there for the violin. I will be greatly indebted to you for this.
Thanks Emilio! Your request is quite the undertaking! I am working on new content all the time but in the meantime there are some really good resources out there which you might like. Check out violinmasterclass.com
Hello, very nice videos, all of them!! Congratulations!! Video and audio are really nice!! Your approach to violin technique is very clear and intelligent. I have a question about your violin, since I've started looking up for a new instrument. Could you tell me please what instrument are you playing? I mean, who is the maker? It sounds so confident in high positions and profound in its tone. Thank you very much!!
I use AT4050 microphones now, but for most of the videos I used a zoom H5 recorder with an added lav mic for voice. I edit audio in Reaper, and video in Davinci Resolve
Great video! Some violinists have a problem that a thumb moves a lot during vibrato as well as the wrist, making the vibrato unstable. What would be your recommendation in this case?
Sounds like a recalibration of the movement is necessary. As mentioned in the video, the thumb should have no part in the vibrato. It should be loose and maintain light contact with the neck. It's hard to describe the process of troubleshooting that via text, but I would start with very slow vibrato and speed it up gradually, noticing when the problem begins to occur.
Daniel your small finger is often "doing something" when you show the vibrato .Either it raises too far or curls up a bit. Try to switch off that "something " to make it relax as you do vibrato .
I'm an accomplished cellist with a good mainly finger vibrato. Porting that to the violin is nonetheless very difficult. The twisting of the arm and less direct angle of the hand changes everything. Very frustrating!
People who live with those who watched this video: do we really need to have a piece of string permanently hanging from the staircase. People who watched the video: yes.

You have a refreshing approach to teaching the violin. This vibrato exercise is fantastic!
I have learned more about vibrato in the last few days than I have in the last 4 years. What brilliant tutorials they are. Thank you so much

@@DanielKurganov Ah, makes sense! it's amazing! Was just testing it out and it's legitimately revolutionary haha, Vibrato should be taught this way!

Daniel Frances Martinez thanks! It’s made by Andrew Ryan. He’s incredible!
That viola joke! OUCH! Lol XD
Lower posisions for wrist like vibrato and higher position for arm vibrato. All in all everything depends on particular situation right???
Yes indeed. Generally, a combination of both is best, and even more generally, all vibrato is finger vibrato actually.
how do you record sound? its so clear, do editing sound? thanks . your videos so helping to me thanks a lots next month I will buy your book ass well
