In my opinion, there's a good reason why Frieren took care of Aura in this way. In episode 9, we got the explanation that the strong-willed would be able to temporarily resist Aserluese. So, to defeat Aura in this manner, Frieren had to break Aura's will so she could not temporarily resist long enough to cancel her spell or order all of her puppets to attack or whatever. That's why she,
    1. Explained to Aura why she had already lost.
    2. After explaining, revealed her mana to shock and awe Aura.
    3. Showed ultimate disrespect by ordering Aura to do the deed herself, while turning her back and walking away.

What I like is 4. Frieren basically had Aura dead to rights eighty years ago, she just couldn't close the trap without revealing her mana deception. Frieren just figured, like elves do, that she had plenty of time to come back later (and the other three party members dragging her off the battlefield). This played into Aura losing because Aura had seen Frieren's 'weak' mana, and saw her run. Aura knew, absolutely and without doubt, that she was stronger than Frieren eighty years before because Frieren was afraid and her allies pulled her away. Aura was cautious because Aura was always cautious, but she still thought that she had victory in the bag because Frieren's intentional long con against demonkind in general and the Demon King specifically was backed up by Frieren's unintentional short con on Aura herself.
Aura had already conned herself. All Frieren had to do was get her to cast the spell, watch her break, and say three words.
Sometimes the best battles are ones where one side just has to show up.

@@firsealtonberry9712 I don't think the reason Frieren couldn't beat Aura 80yrs ago had to do with revealing the mana deception (after all, who's to tell the tale if she's dead), but rather, it was the fact that Frieren was with her party at the time. Aura had to retreat that fight because Auserlase only works on one target at a time, and she was in a 1v4 situation. Using it on any member of the party would force all 3 remaining members to attack her aggressively in an attempt to reverse the spell, which is kinda the opposite of Aura's fighting style. If it were a 1v1 back then, I'm sure the result would be very similar to what it was now.
But yeah other than that, the nail in the coffin was definitely the fact that Aura easily fell for the long con Frieren's always been doing. Only difference in her case is that for most battles, Frieren's con only gives her a noticeable edge. In this case, it directly counters Aura's own specialty. The absolute worst matchup possible

Aura: I am a lvl 50 demon class player! I have been playing since launch!
Frieren: I am a lvl 100 mage; played since beta. Powned!

A lot of Frieren's "mundane," spells were things she used to please her friends, or spells that made her remember them. For instance, sour grapes are Eisen's favorite food. A lot of the seemingly-random spells had practical applications that aren't always obvious at first. Others just made her happy and reminded her that magic is fun and not always about power and combat.
Frieren was never as cold as she seemed at first. Part of her issue is that she's awkward and spent so mch time alone, as revealed in this episode. She also had trauma, which was revealed in this episode. It's really more than just her long lifespan making her aloof to the short lives of humans, there are a number of complex things going on here.
Some of it may be her trying not to get too attached after losing her entire family and tribe followed by her Master due to time and aging. I suspect she doesn't show emotions in the same way that she never lets people know how much mana she has. She even uses basic magic most of the time for combat, rarely letting people know what she's actually capable of.

Frieren is like a level 20 mage in D&D that combats mostly using magic missiles, very rarely using level 9 earth shattering spells

I've always loved the depiction of the passage of time. After Flamme's death, there's the whole montage of her living in the wilds that goes on for a few minutes and takes it's time to show what she does in that thousand years.
then after meeting Himmel, tens years go by in ten frames, just to kick home how little of a time span that journey was.
also, minor note, she killed Qual with his own spell. and the Decapitated Draht with raw mana (as was his technique) and then killed Aura with her own magic. Lugner talked of how demons "spend their entire life perfect one form of magic" and along come's Frieren and out classes them on their own style.
Fern can fight with one arm tied behind her back, Frieren can... well... you'll see...

The battle music always gives me chills! I love it so much when characters turn up in this show!
And ofc ESPECIALLY the moment when Frieren lets her mana out with the ginormous flex.

Two of my favourite "battle" episodes of anime back to back. They're beautiful in places, especially episode 9, but what really makes them great is the 8 episodes we had before making us invested in the characters and care about them. So many little threads and details coming back into it - for example, we saw Frieren training Fern to suppress her mana many episodes ago, we just didn't realise that was what we were seeing before this episode.
Also it's always fun to watch people react to Frieren's stone cold gamer moment...

So nice to see actual Women written correctly. Not the Mary sues who get granted their power just for being women. That happens in Star Wars, Marvel, & just Hollywood in general.
Frieren is #1 on MAL. People loved Alien, & The Wizard of OZ decades ago. When they were written correctly. Hopefully we can keep getting powerful women, with good stories like this. Anime is awesome.

"He's on the defensive" was not referring to Stark btw but Lugner, hence her response. Just a FYI. Most people mistake that but if you understand the timing, it makes way more sense (Battle of attrition, asking her to join, etc) and Stark is feeling her out.
