- We see this a lot. I figured I would share one of the most common seasons your S2000 doesn't start.
This is a pretty much a straight forward fix.
I hope this helps

I fixed in 15 min bro Thanks. Used a flathead screwdriver taped it to flat side removed the front seat 2-3 min. Lay down stuck the tip and wedge it in. Double check it was laying flat car start right on.
Awesome !
This happened to me just last month. Luckily I know an honest mechanic that I've been going to for over 15 years and he fixed it without getting ripped off. I imagine the dealership telling me it's a major repair. Great video!
You are the kind of guy that teach people good tricks and always explained well.
Yesterday I meet a guy on track that couldn't start his ep3 anymore. Engine was turning but didn't started. I guess something like that was happening from giving some shocks to the pedals . No check engine light .
Worth mentioning that the brake switch is prone to the same problem, at least on my rsx. Hard way to learn that lesson is walking up to a dead battery due to brake lights being constantly on. Good vid guys, keep it up!
Joe Smith Very true. I’ve had that happen to me too.
Without removing the pedal assembly an 8” screw driver with the plug taped to the very end works. Block the clutch with a small
Wood chunk to hold the pedal where you can see the hole. This method took me 90 seconds to fix my 99 civic
I am trying to fix this now with the screw and plug taped to the end but am having a real hard time pushing the plug through the hole. Ugh, im ready to throw in the towel and take it to a mechanic just to take the clutch pedal off.
Thank you for the video.
Instead of taking out the clutch assembly,
I removed the driver seat 💺 ( 4 bolts ) laid flat with a hiking flashlight 🔦 pointing at the area where the rubber piece goes when u press the clutch. Used a 8 inch to 9 inch long hemostats to grip clip it, lines up the nose of the rubber piece with the hole 🕳 and pressed the clutch down, holding it in its place (removes hemostats) to grab 8 inch flat head screw driver to push the rubber fitting the rest of the way. Done ✅. Now just replace the seat 💺 and that’s a wrap.
Wow, Yankee Ingenuity! Take the seat out!
I know tbis video is 5 years old but it really helped
Thank you for not deleting
@@TheLuisguzman209 Of course. We get a lot of people letting us know it’s helped them.
This guy is the be friend the S2k. Ever had.
Best S2k work videos tbere are period.
And a likeable guy. No big ego. No bs.
Very substantive. I appreciate th is guy
Had this problem earlier this week, I was sure it was the starter solenoid or the starter. Was doing some UA-cam mechanicing and saw your video and thought “yeah LHT usually knows what he’s talking about” and sure enough I found those little pieces in my floorboard! Bridged the connector with a wire and it started right up! Once again you’ve saved me and my s2000!
[98 Civic] Had this issue today. Years ago I replaced the cruise control rubber and another rubber plug which triggered the brake light when you press the brake. This time though, I saw the hard plastic rubber on the carpet & I knew what that meant so I looked underneath & couldn't find where it broke off from. I had no idea there was another switch on the clutch pedal hiding in the back until this video 👍👍. Thankful I am 1 of those people who was able to fit my finger up there and temporary put something to hold the spot until I buy a new set of rubber plugs.
John I love these little tech videos sprinkled in with a day-in-the-life montage. This will be so helpful down the line with my Civic having push button start. I cannot wait for the full Civic reveal. It’s going to be so great to see the owners full reaction. Excited
You said it! All my Honda’s have a nut and bolt just because when they failed I had a nut and bolt handy and didn’t want to get pulled over on the way to the parts store.... great vid
Just saved me a ton of money :). Shops were quoting outrageous prices for a starter that didn't need to be replaced (self diagnosed). I had already replaced the other two plugs and didn't know about this one...
Glad it helped
This is great information easily the clearest one I'd seen this guy's great he helps people
Thank you so much, this saved me having to get my S towed or leaving overnight in a parking lot. Was able to press the switch manually to get it started.
Oh look it's magic, the clutch assembly just appeared in my hand!
I truly appreciate this. I knew the bottom one on my EG6 hatch was disintegrated, but had no idea there was one even higher up, and that one was my problem. Truly helpful video!
I woke up this morning to find the forbidden candy in pieces on my floormat. Thankfully i purchased a 4 pack of these in silicone to replace my cruise control stopper a couple months ago. This one was a royal PITA though. Took a flathead and taped the new stopper to a long flathead, assumed the proper 69 position. Using a light on the floor, i was able to illuminate the hole just enough and press the clutch and flathead into place. It got have way in so i flipped over and pumped the clutch to fully seat the stopper. Showed up to work 2 hours late but im good for another 20 years.
5 years later this video was incredibly helpful pro tip- if you don’t want to take out your clutch assembly just put tape around your finger stick on the grommet and use it to put it in easier without falling off‼️👆
@@Rosaa007 I’m glad it helped. We sell these everyday and hear this a lot. Thank for taking the time to comment. 👍🏻
Great video. Explained well what happened to me tonight on my 3rd startup attempt on my brand new motor. I appreciate this minus the paint drying lol
You’re the best! Saw this video a long time ago when it was uploaded and this is what I’m having issues with now.
Just ignore the haters, and they will go away. Or just let us take care of them. Love your channel so much please keep up the amazing work👍
46505-SA5-000. Same applies to the brake pedal if your brake lights are staying on. Fits civics, accords, s2000’s, crvs, etc. a ton of Honda’s have the same part number. Nicely done John.
Alex Naranjo Yes. We’ve all come out to ‘ why’s the brake lights on ‘ followed by a dead battery
Just bought my ap2 and leaving a photoshoot i saw the clip on the floor mat. I had already bought the buttons from LHT but didn’t plan on doing them so soon after getting the car. The car wouldn’t start, but thankfully I was able to push the button with a flat head and get home to change them out. Thanks LHT!
Congratulations on the car , good job being prepared! Thanks for the order.
Thank you for this video. I came crossed it after several google searches and this is exactly what the issue is with mine
Awesome 👍🏻
John thank you for solving my problem. I've watched this channel forever and didn't watch this episode because I didn't have an S2000 yet. I've had mine for 4 months now and this was exactly the problem. Keep doing UA-cam and I will keep watching. I'm saving up for a supercharger now!
Ldunk I’m glad it helped. We’ve fixed countless cars for a simple issue.
@@LHTPerformance It worked perfectly, changed both the cruise control and the clutch pedal buttons. The cruise control button fell apart while we were taking it out. 8.5 dollars plus time and effort.
Ldunk Great. Easy and cheap fix.
Man this was a pain in the ass. Just getting the stopper back in the hole for the neutral safety switch was hell then slipping back the safety pin safely was hell again. Got it done but it was so cramped. I almost fainted from heat exhaustion. Thx tho you saved my ass. I had to get something that sits flat against the stopper then hammer it in.
@LHT John I'm 6'2 and 160, I was able to replace my button with a trim piece clip (holds trunk down) and it holds in place great. It's hard plastic so it doesn't get brittle and doesn't send the vibrations.
Going on 8 years now with this fix and 6 in my Corvette the same way.
DirtDude117 Good job.
Love this channel. This is exactly what happened to me
Thank you sr, this was a big help, happened to me
Man I did not expect that guy to own that Civic! He going to enjoy the crap out of that car.
Adriel Rodriguez - “That guy”? You know him?
Bjorn Muskus No. I just assumed a young kid owned it.
Adriel Rodriguez - Ya, I get you. Yet, who says any of us ever grow up? 😉
Bjorn Muskus Hahahahah right! I have a 510hp coupe. I definitely haven’t grown up. Lol 😂
It's a designed failure point. A flat metal pedal would still work, but then you'd be replacing the more expensive switch rather than a cheap rubber button, and you'd likely have to replace it more often due to harsher impact every time you use the clutch. I saw a similar design in the headlight motors on the pop-up headlights on my Trans Am. Plastic gears would disintegrate over time. People complained about the cheap design, but dropping in a replacement gear is so much cheaper than replacing the entire motor.
You don't need to disassemble the pedal assembly!! This is super easy to place. Assuming the old one has already fallen out, just press on the pedal and place the new gromet in place, then release the pedal and make sure it pressed all the way down! I just did this in 5 minutes on an AP1 and I assume it'd be the same on an AP2.
Another preventive item to out on my list when the old silver rag comes for some LHT TLC !!!
I recently found a stop pad on the floor of my 97 Civic, and since I've fixed it before I knew exactly what it was. I am soooo dreading fixing it!😭
Very informative. Thanks for the good content
Thanks again for an awesome tip. Probably saved me and a lot of others some bs in the future. Probably a whole bunch of $$$ from a crappy dealer as well. Too bad you didn't have a franchise/shop up in Toronto Canada.
ughhh those evil plastic stoppers/plugs/whatever, hate those things! My GSR also has 3 of them for each pedal switch under the dash, and all 3 of mine have broken apart. One time I noticed my car's brake lights wouldn't turn off, with the car just sitting in the parking lot at work. And most recently I couldn't start the car unless I reached under the dash and pushed the clutch interlock switch manually. I also happened to be having a distributor issue at the same time, so the car would die on a hill and then I couldn't get it started again. In my case I think I unbolted the clutch pedal arm from the bracket that holds the switches. And I used a small bolt for each one so I wouldn't have to wait on a parts order.
Also great comments on why Matt sells what he sells.
A temporary solution is to jumper the switch connector with a paperclip.
Or, you can jumper the switch connector with a push button hide it, and put a kill switch in the car!
Temporary? I’ve been like that for almost 2 years! 😂
Make a video to show me.
I need this too!!!
Does that work with any manual car? i seen another vid with a 350z and doing that, and it does work but on every car does it?
Looking forward to the hatch delivery video.
Thank You, mine did the same thing and even had the broken plastic plug on the floor mat.
That's crazy cause my car didnt start either and all I did was put one of those stoppers in the front where you said it's for cruise control and my car started right up. Since then my car turns on every single time no problem
Eventually I need to get some more. Used my last 3 on some friends' S2's and now had to use a paperclip for myself.
I absolutely love this channel!
As a way to solve the clutch safety switch problem demonstrated here without removing the clutch to access the hole for the stop pad or bumper, you could refer to the following link (video and description). This method uses a putty to create a stop pad/bumper on which the clutch sensor/safety switch lands and is then pushed in.
ua-cam.com/video/ncYaH9xELkY/v-deo.html
F***** tease at the end.. lol... keep up the great work!
This is the best method!
I attempted and gave up trying to get the pedal switch stopper without pulling the clutch pedal off in my integra. It was much easier on a later model civic where it wasn't hidden.
Replaced the clutch CC switch and the break pedal switch. Kit only comes with two… completely blanked on the clutch safety switch. So, woke up to a no start this morning. Ugh! 😂😂😂
We include 3 in our kits as cars with cruise require all 3. They all fail around 10-12 years
nice fix bro
Ty, well done
Just got done putting my clutch pedal assembly back in the wife Honda. Even my son made the comment about the design flaw that you have to remove the pedal assembly to replace the little stopper, the stopper you can access doesnt keep the car from running...
Would this be the case if my manual honda has a clutch safety switch bypass (with the paper clip)? I hope it made sense
Thank you
Just had a track day at Daytona cut short because of that plastic piece that broke on the brake pedal, so the brake lights were on without pressing the pedal down.
Jason Hyde They usually fail at the worst time.
@@LHTPerformance I've been lucky so far with my old 97 LS, 2000 GSR and it's happened at home. At least the clutch one didn't get messed up while 100 miles from home. Lol.
My s2k has 60k miles and have this issue starting today . Thanks for this video !!!! What’s that part number ? Thanks
Glad it helped you. We see this all the time.
so this happened to me yesterday afternoon. I got in my car tried to start and nothing. Noticed the little rubber piece sitting on my floorboard. grabbed one from Oreilys, took the pedal out and stuck the piece in and still no start. I will admit that i probably opened(pushed?)the clutch pedal in and out while the pedal was REMVOED from the car and didn't realize the shock that it would create when pulled. Is it possible that i damaged the inhibitor button on the pedal? How would i test that if that's the case? mine is a 2000 ap1 so it does have a little more age to it
Can't wait for the handover vid
A couple of years ago we were leaving a wedding and my S2K wouldn't start. Sure enough, the button for the safety start switch was in pieces on the floor mat. I eventually was able to pull the safety switch connector and shunt across the connector pins with a bobby pin my GF had in her purse.
I hurt all over afterwards (I'm 6'3" and I was 65 at the time) but she thought I was freakin McGyver when the car started. 😁
That sounds like fun, rolling around the ground in your nice trying to make a car go….. I feel like I’ve been there. Lol. Many times. Lol.
At least you got the car running and drove it out. Good job.
Do you have a video on removing the clutch pedal?
Mr. Miyagi would not approve of that paint technique 😁
Master Exploder Lol. I go for the up, down, dab, side to side etc. it’s pretty random. Lol.
@@LHTPerformance Haha, sounds good to me. Love all the videos, and keep 'em coming. Future customer from Louisiana wishing you guys the best of luck with the hurricane 🙏
Master Exploder Thanks Man ! Looks like we ducked this one.
Great work where can i found thos rubber plug on auto parts?
Had this issue with my 94 civic, brake lights would stay on all the time just that little pedal stop replaced both
I sometimes have to pump the clutch couple times before car will shift. Now it won't start. One click and nothing. Brand-new starter and same thing
Thanks!!!
That happened to my Acura TL
Why is no one showing how to remove the clutch pedal assembly? I’m stuck at trying to pull down the locking pin with pliers :(
I could have used this video 2 months ago! 😭😭😭
oh my god! I though that rubber droppings food I dropped.
I just bypassed the switch with gauge wire and some electrical tape lol
Where were you two days ago!?
Part number?
Should leave a link on where to get those rubber circles. Also do you have to do a pedal adjustment after this ?
Yung Snoop
You get the plugs at an auto parts store
I have a 2015 Accord Ex with 6-speed Manual, and it is doing the same thing. Do you recommend buying OEM Clutch Switch Assembly and is this doable as a DIY? Thank you.
They are usually pretty accessible, I would recommend sticking your head under there with a flashlight and just look around and get familiar with it. Look how everything moves and you should be able to locate where these pedal buttons are. Then it’s a case of popping the new ones in. It’s not difficult, as long as you can get into it.
This is a terrible design, they could have made the pedal solid without a hole for a plug and it would never fail… I ended up buying the doorman kit - part #74015. I double sided some duck tape and attached the plug to my finger, reached up and pushed it in. Extremely hard to get to especially if you don’t take out the seat, It was a pain in the ***. If you don’t get the plug you can also superglue a penny over the hole and it will fix it.
Actually, there’s a reason they are designed this way. The main reason is to reduce the shock on the switch eventually breaking it. Second, it gives the pedals a quiet cushioned feel and sound going from limit to limit during the pedal travel. I’ve replaced them with double tape and screw drivers etc. it’s 10 times easy to remove the pedal assemble.
Button, button, who's got the button? Is Willie Wonka a hater?

Another learning moment. Thanks John!
Mine does exactly the same thing. But there are no switches anywhere on the clutch anymore. 🤦♂️
you never mentioned where you bought that couple white thing to put in the clutch
Replaced mine months ago and it went out again during a road trip. Do the possibly melt or what also. Is there a workaround to just get rid of the problem for good
Or better still... Delete it and not run the risk of ruining your crank thrust faces by pressing a clutch pedal in on a stone cold engine where there is no oil on thrust faces.
Love seeing notifications first one here 🙂
Good to know 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
My ap1 cranks starts for about 2 seconds then dies then won’t crack over after . Any ideal ?
Please paint the main entrance door LHT BLUEEEEEEEEEE
This happened to me today at a costco gas station lol
It always happens at the worse time. I once had a car towed to our shop. I diagnosed and fixed the car to have this issue before it was even unloaded. Everyone looked at me as super man. Lol.
Nice haha that's epic. This would be the second grommet failure on my AP2. First was the brake roughly a year ago and now the clutch. The pieces were all over the carpet so I knew right off the bat what was wrong. Thanks for uploading this video, super helpful 👍
@@mf3757 Glad it helped my friend. Always do 3 together.
Would jumping this button temporarily be a good idea until I can fix the correct way ?
Anyone have link to how to take clutch pedal off
What's the part number?
Is this the same on all S2000s, AP1 and AP2 cars?
It's probably the same on just about all Hondas. My GSR has the same plastic plugs, 2 on the clutch and one on the brake pedal for the brake light/cruise switch.
Yes, AP1 & AP2 both have this issue. Used the last of my spare plugs on some friends' AP1s
I'm having this issue with my AP1 right now. It has 164k miles on it.
My car is cranking but it wont start. My cruise control stopped working a few weeks before the car stopped working too. Could this still be the reason?
Most likely, it’s the lower button on the clutch pedal. Upper button is safety start.
So maybe bothbof them went out. Like two months ago the one on the brake broke off and I replaced it.
Thanks so much! Because of this video my car is running again. We tried everything! I cant believe it was just this small fix
@@Heybluguy Awesome! Isn’t is great when the fix is something easy
This got my car running again but now it stopped tarting again. Could it be the switch thats faulty?
$500 at dealer to do clutch and brake at same time
The clutch pedal has nothing to do with cruise control. That's more likely a hill assist switch.
One button is for the safety start, the second button is to cancel the cruise control.
@@LHTPerformance The clutch doesn't cancel cruise control on my car. The brake does, but not the clutch - unless you mean disengage the cruise control temporarily while the clutch pedal is depressed. It resumes again when the pedal is released. So, for example, you can switch gears and maintain cruise control without having to set cruise control again. My Hyundai didn't work that way. With the Hyundai, pressing the clutch canceled cruise control. It had to be set again if you wanted to resume. Took a while to get used to the difference.
@@Brillig2 On a Honda S2000, ( as per the one in the video) the brake and clutch have the ability to disengage the cruise control. The cruise will be not be re engaged until the set button is pressed. The reason I know, is I work on them pretty exclusively.
@@LHTPerformance OK - for some reasons I had it in my mind it was a Honda Civic, probably because that's what I'm looking for. Sorry to throw in a curve ball. I'm just trying to figure out how to access the top clutch switch. All the videos I find don't have the interior fuse box blocking the way like it is in my car. The simple repair is made difficult simply because I can't reach my hand around to unplug the switch.
First to watch the whole vid ..... Then comment....☝
Bypass the clutch, problem solved
What if you changed the pedal stop and its still not starting?
Son Goku Start with the battery, make sure it’s fully charged and the terminals are tight. If you can, test you’re getting a solid 12v on the starter terminal post (Thicker wire) all the time. Then check when you start to start it, your getting 12v on the starter signal wire, (thin wire)
