This is why i will never own a snake of that size. I don’t have the space and i accept it. I have 2 9 year old ball pythons that are just at 1300grams and extremely healthy. Screw power feeding, keep them healthy! I want them to live long not breed and eat to death

Also, if you have a proper sized enclosure for a retic rather than this patheric "industry standard" that will help reduce obesity as it'll allow them to move around, thus burning off excess fat to a much greater degree.

As you were publishing this video, I just finished making a large arboreal enclosure for my super dwarf retic (having some huge floor surface as well as height). A very complex system of branches (up to 8-10 branches at the top). My animal has been loving it so far! Perching like a green tree python, using every inch of its enclosure. Can't even begin to tell how active it has become. I hope, that together with Garret you'll change the view on how these guys should be kept. Fantastic video, keep it up!

Your best bet might be to go and look at display enclosures in zoos. For big retics a lot of people build wooden enclosures and use marine epoxy to coat them, pond liner on the base might be beneficial to extend the life of the enclosure with all the urine and knocked over water bowls you will inevitably get.

So glad you touched on husbandry and cage sizing. I owned about 21 snakes at one point. Mostly colubrids, never was into Pythons or boids much. Eventually the guilt of keeping them in stackable enclosures they could never have a realistic home territory in got to me. I passed them all on to other reputable keepers I know and now just focus on snakes in the wild. I’m sorry, but an animal that has a home range of a square mile or more (or even much less than that) shouldn’t be kept in a 2’ x 2’ cage. It’s just not for me.

    • @grisflyt
      @grisflyt 4 роки тому +7

I agree. I love boas, but rather than getting a Bcc (my favorite), I got a Tarahumara mountain boa. Males tops out at around 4'. I can provide sufficient space for a snake that size. You can virtually not do that to something like a Burmese python, which has an average home range of 22.5 square kilometers. I haven't found any study on retics, but I assume they don't move less. The general idea of boas and pythons as ambush foragers is also challenged today. They aren't just sit and wait predators, but actively hunt and seek out their prey. Boas go into caves to take bats when they sleep, for example. A snake that takes a monkey up in the trees doesn't do that by dumb luck. They pick a spot where they know the monkeys will pass.

@@Retics i know Im late to the party but wanted to add: retics in the wild aren’t taking down baby pigs or lambs. They are eating a bunch of smaller meals or the occasional big one and then chilling for a long time. I have a suspicion ball pythons are notoriously sedentary because we feed them too much as well. They never go ‘hunting’. Snakes don’t explore for entertainment, they explore for food.

Dad, My Family has a farm in Rayong Province in the Gulf of Thailand. I go out into the farm at night to take temperatures. Regularly at 4-5 AM in the morning as the fog/mist is present, I see temperatures of 65 F. During the day when the temperatures at 85-90 F the retics become dormant and sleep up in the trees or in cooler areas around the base of the trees. I talk to my Thai family members and other locals, they confirm my observations and state that the retics are most active in the low to mid 70 degree range.

Lovely footage from Thailand, a really beautiful place and a real mecca for snake (and tropical fruit) enthusiasts! I remember a local man glazing off half of his 26' lounge in order to create enough space for his python. I love to see snakes in the wild, fortunately the modern tech allows for ease of filming and the quality of footage is so much better these days. Thanks Dav enjoy the rest of your trip. P.S. Any snakes of note in South Korea?

Seriously how do you not have a million subscribers? You are the ONLY one doing videos like this and everyone else is just showing what they have in their collections/personal zoos/whatever. That gets boring and old really fast. Doesn't seem fair that you are actually going out there and making videos like this and getting half the exposure they do. I'll keep watching every week tho. Rattle on!

CORRECTION - Although the ecosystem AT Khao Sok National Park may be one of the oldest in the world, it is not 160 million years old... yes, the sedimentary rocks in the area are very very old, but the flora and fauna that lived here during the time of the dinosaurs was wiped out during the global catastrophic event known as the K/T extinction event.... the area known Khao Sok National Park has been subjected to the same global changes in climate as anywhere else in the world, having been through many many changes in sea level to create what is now seen in Southern Thailand and South East Asia...

I had a super dwarf retic full size which was the equivalent to what you were holding. The absolute best snake I've ever had in my life. They are incredibly intelligent along with king cobras as far as snakes are concerned. I used to do reptile rescue, so I housed tons of snakes, and the retic was just something special I couldn't describe with words. Sadly I had to part with her in fear of local bylaws coming to confiscate her. I found her a good home with someone who lives in the country, where that snake is allowed. We are allowed to keep boas and pythons up to 6 feet. My retic was only 5 feet, but because scientifically it's still considered a Malayopython Reticulatus it's a banned species. Smh. Nice video by the way. I was bored at 4 am and decided to randomly look up retics, and you came up. Brought back memories, even though I never went to Thailand.

So I'm hearing that baby wild snakes were just all traumatized from being constantly insecure, and now they all have chronic PTSD-flavored anxiety about exposure in adulthood. Same, noodle fam. Same.

I don’t keep the species anymore, but still always been a fan of them. Had to leave most groups on social media of retic keepers because it turns my stomach seeing how fat they are kept. One of the subjects I think I beat into people the most is how much we overfeed in this hobby. We use these snakes instincts against them and to their detriment. Glad you made this!

Dav is 100% correct. The retics being held in captivity are generally obese. Some are morbidly obese and sick. They get no exercise and their owners feed them too much so that they get super long and fat. This is really a form of cruelty. Thanks, Dav for the TRUTH and a great video.

People make lots of mistakes in snakeland (and other animals). Mostly thinking about money and themselves in stead of te snake itself. I really liked your comments on this. This has to be said more and by more people, hoping the egoistic people starting to think what they are really doïng with the snakes and the hobby / our passion in general. Thumbs up for you!

Can't beat the beauty of a wildtype retic! My super dwarf is wild type and I think he's just amazing. Currently working with him on handling as he's already a year old and wasn't handled much. Snake hook has helped a bunch lol thankfully he isn't very defensive just wants to get away. He's currently in shed so I've given him the week off since he's been hiding in his hide lol thank you for doing these videos!

  • @trevor866

Keeping them properly? Yeah right. Hobby standards won't allow for that. In order to keep them properly they would need a room sized enclosure with plenty of trees to perch in as well as a body of water to swim in. And 8x4 foot jail cell with a cat litter pan to drink out of is the trade off.
And awesome to see that you got Dan and Apple into this video. 2 of the most true hobbyists that we have.

I see people over feed a lot in captivity not just reptiles just because food helps us heal and we eat 2 (some people more) times a day we need to realise how they are ment to look to live long healthy lives. Love what you do keep it up dav 😊

I already decided to give my Golden Child Kaloatoa Super Dwarf a little slice of rain forest! When we renovate our downstairs bathroom, I'm taking the old prefab plastic shower and turning it into an awesome glass enclosure, complete with a filtered rain shower head, a pool with drain for easy cleaning, and mercury vapour metal halide lighting from my old reef tank. It'll have branches and vines and should look just like a mangrove swamp. I'll share it with you when it's done.

What you said about the enclosures and water source. I agree with you 1000%. I hate seeing any animal in tubs . They are worth more to me and in general than that. I give my cresteds and leopards and leachies in the biggest enclosure I can get. They deserve it.
