I’m from Northern Thailand and Tokay geckos are commonly found in people’s houses. Many people consider them pests and will try to get rid of them. My dad, however, lets a few of them live in our house because they are really good at keeping mice and small snakes away from our house.
I would love to see you do one on leopard geckos. They’ve been in the hobby for so long and people see them as an “easy” reptile, which may be true but I would love to see how they behave in the wild and what exactly there environment looks like so that we could make better husbandry decisions when keeping them.
Dav, will you be including other Eublepharis species in that episode? I recently picked up some E. angramainyu and they’re such a cool species to be working with.
It’s so important to protect the Tokay Gecko! I am finding myself becoming increasingly frustrated with “traditional Chinese medicine” and how it’s decimating numbers of beautiful species.
Thankfully they've been put under Cites II protection so now there's regulation on how many geckos can be exported. Sadly it doesn't help with poaching though :(
So cool! I love how the locals respect the tokays, and even invite them into their homes! Made me smile ear to ear. Great video, that little baby tokay was just precious!
Likewise, I'm always in awe of those that treat animules the way I do (better than myself or any other non-innocent). It gives me hope for the human race. How's the humidity over there? I may have to relocate.
Fantastic video Dāv! As a tokay keeper myself, I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to see these animals in the wild and gain this valuable insight! You’re the best!

Thank you for this video. I have owned a few Tokay's over the years and they are by far one of my absolute favorite geckos. I know the aggression and have been bitten a few times myself so I know exactly what you felt when that big male bit you. So just to share a story. When I got my first Tokay I knew nothing but I loved the colors and aggression is always a factor for me. The owner of the pet shop was afraid of it and refused to sell it without the enclosure. OK fine. I lived in south Florida and kept most of my reptiles on the patio. The Tokay was one of two lizards that where allowed to run free. Him and my iguana boss man. Boss man had an open bay enclosure and 98% of the time I would find them two in boss mans cage together. Not next to each other but they both loved that cage and shared it. The Tokay really never wanted to leave the cage and after hearing your story I now understand why. The iguana's cage was set up with a mist system and basking lights. He was there for the humidity and basking time, and the iguana never cared. I would not say they where buddies but they did co-exist.
I love this video so much. Tokays are my favourite gecko and this video really helped me add more to my bioactive vivs. A couple of my tokays are socialized; its really amazing to spend time with a calm, friendly tokay. They're tremendous lizards, and a lot smarter than we think, they're incredibly athletic and clever lizards . And for anyone who wants to keep tokays, you need to really really love them and have a lot of patience. Reading their body language and learning their boundaries is key to earning their trust. Also food. Food wins them over almost every time. My cbb male is gentle enough to handfeed (he will sit on my hand or lap and I can feed him calcium dusted crickets) I cannot wait till my cbb tokays are old enough to breed, producing hand raised cbb babies is the end goal!
Awesome video Dav!! As a suggestion: I’d absolutely love to see a leopardgeckos in the wild video as there’s a lot of misconception on how they should be kept in captivity. Stay awesome!
I really enjoyed this video. I live on the southern edge of Bangkok and have a number of tokays living around my home. From time to time they move into the house and spend varying lengths of time living there. There is always plenty of food available as I breed mealworms, superworms, dubias, crickets and cockroaches for my other animals. They can become hand-tame and will accept food from my hand. They tend to poop in the same place so it is easy to leave a sheet of newspaper there in the evening and clear it away in the morning. Eventually, they move out looking for love and adventure elsewhere but it is never too long before another one turns up. Humidity can vary throughout the day and night so the tokays in my home are able to regulate their environment by hiding in different locations. The room where I keep animals is usually quite hot but some enclosures are more humid than others so the tokays can find the conditions that suit them best at different times of the day. I would think that the wild tokays can do the same at the temple to a certain extent.
Awwww Dav, that Tokay was just hanging out and havin' a chat with you! Nothing better than a gecko serenade at night! Thanks for another awesome video!🧡💙❤ so nice of you to keep making the finger offerings for our benefit! 🦎

He’s beautiful, spicy, and I’m so so pleased to have him and learn from him, as well as share with others how amazing these guys can be. Loved the video and LOVE to see the respect that your hosts give these amazing creatures. ❤
I lived in an upper story house in Chiang Rai, Thailand, and there were at least a dozen Tokay's. They could come in to the kitchen, which was fun. But one morning my girlfriend discovered one just outside eating a bat. Yes, a bat. I even have a picture somewhere. Meanwhile, I've kept over 25 speicies of lizard in my life, but none recently. Nowadays I just keep some simple fish, because they are so much easier. But I still fantasize about keeping lizards. The care is so difficult, I tend to think it might just be more appropriate for a lot of people to keep a local variety in and outdoor enclosure. I kept blue-bellies and an alligator lizard like this when I was a kid, and only fed them what I could find in my backyard + some meal worms. They did very well, and much, much better than if I'd tried to keep them inside in an aquarium. Later, when I was more responsible, I did that, too. But nowadays, I'm going back to simple pets and simple care, because I enjoy them as much as the more exotic ones.
Dave I have to say I've watched many videos on UA-cam from other reptile guys and nobody comes close to you. I love how thorough you are and how you explain everything from a to z. I wanted to do one this trip but they aren't found where we were this time. Maybe I'll do one on Aussie water dragons when I go to Australia later this month?
I got mine 4 days ago, and this video was a great insight. I did research beforehand, and did provide uvb, humidity, and heat. But my basking spot is a tad cooler than the ambient temperature you recorded, so I’ll be getting a new heat emitter for him. The sexing tip was great too, I’ve never been the best at the usual method of looking for femoral pores. It was so nice to see how everyone in the village respected the tokay geckos, you never see that in America. One thing I’ll also mention is that I’ve heard they can also enjoy baby food or other mashed fruit. I read in reptiles magazine that a lady had a tokay in her house that ate half of her lemon pie!
Dave, you made me reconsider some things regarding my tokays’s care so thank you. Also, great video. I noticed the “ big boy” you were trying to catch in the abandoned home had a regenerated tail. Ha! Someone or something must have been close to catching him!
Great video. Thanks so much for posting. Your humidity comment is a little misleading though. The moisture in the air probably did not change much. 89 degrees with 44% humidity and 78 degrees with 59% humidity is probably a similar amount of water vapor in the air. Your probe measures relative humidity. The temp dropped, and cooler air can't hold as much moisture as the warmer daytime air. The humidity is relative to how much the air can hold. It went up as the temp went down, just as we should expect. Cheers, Chris
That's correct, but what taking these readings does is offer an insight into the temps and humidity where they are naturally from so that keepers can better gauge where those levels are in their enclosures
@Dāv Kaufman's Reptile Adventures Totally agree! Didn't mean to come off so pedantically. I just wonder about people saying things like "the sun burning off all that humidity", when in reality the sun is only adding to the amount of water that the air can hold, Perhaps increasing the actual amount of water in the air during the day and adding to saturation during the evening. Please keep taking your readings, Chris
@@Cgraseck I didn't take it that way at all. I appreciate comments like this. I used to have a professor that always said "they put erasers on my pencils as well" and that goes the same for me.
I’m sorry your series doesn’t get the attention it deserves it’s hard sometimes to get things out there properly , maybe you can post some clips on Instagram ! But yeah you’re doing an awesome job and this series is great , I understand it’s hard to get into countries like Pakistan or wherever for a leopard gecko but yeah that’s one I’m looking forward to , and I’ve always wanted to see a gargoyle but yeah no rush or need for them !!
Dave, it’s not higher humidity at night because the sun is no longer “burning off the humidity”, the relative humidity is higher at night simply because the temperature of the air dropped, and cooler air can hold less water, and therefore without any actual change in the water in the air, the relative humidity goes up because that cooler air can’t hold as much water. Take the same air, drop the temperature of that air, and the relative humidity always goes up, even though the air has the same amount of water vapor in it. Try this experiment with your reptile cages at home. When the lights go off, the temperature drops, and the relative humidity will go up. So you really shouldn’t be misting at night, because the humidity will already be higher.
That's so amazing!! We've got some Tokay breeders here in the Pacific NorthWest who's sole goal is to get them to be exceedingly handle-able. It's really cool watching. Keep the videos coming Dav! #RattleOn
As always, loving these types of vids from you and glad you got to hang with Dan and Apple for a bit...so exciting. Keep on my friend...you are great...
They are so darn cute! Probably shouldn’t stop rubbing his belly and you won’t get bit.😂🤣 I definitely enjoyed your adventure... The lighting made some of them look blue and almost maroon on that baby. It would be hard not to bring one home. 👍
Naturally defensive, not aggressive, for the most part. Even the tokay that bit you did so after you were poking around on his back and neck, which are areas that predators attack. They're not jumping off of walls to attack people. Great video, and thanks for showing their natural habitats and how to better care for them (especially pointing out the necessity of a uvb).
I live in Cambodia and there are tons of tokay geckos I just found one that fell in a trash bin and could not get out. I would like to note that they are social animals and I almost always see them in colonies.
Great job Dav! I can't believe I'm finally finding this video now. Do you (or anyone else) know of any good Tokay breeders by chance? Or could you maybe find one to visit at some point for a video? I know one of the biggest problems with Tokays in the hobby is the fact that they're imported so much so that you basically have to play gecko whisperer with them and I'd really rather have a captive bred option.
It's Dav! Yay! Always love seeing Davs videos pop up in my list. Hey Dav just wanted to say Muchas gracias for all your work. I really enjoy your video's. Dav for President. 😂
I was just thinking how calm that Tokay was and then he got you. But man I love Tokays, I’m really thinking about trying to start a breeding colony since we rarely see cbb here.

What I hear: "Go get another snake. You deserve it."

You’re the best herper in the whole world
Thanks!
Cheers,
Chris
That's correct, but what taking these readings does is offer an insight into the temps and humidity where they are naturally from so that keepers can better gauge where those levels are in their enclosures
@Dāv Kaufman's Reptile Adventures Totally agree! Didn't mean to come off so pedantically. I just wonder about people saying things like "the sun burning off all that humidity", when in reality the sun is only adding to the amount of water that the air can hold, Perhaps increasing the actual amount of water in the air during the day and adding to saturation during the evening.
Please keep taking your readings,
Chris

Thanks for this info. It's sometimes tough to explain things like this in a way that is easy to understand.
Love the vid! Thanks Dāv! A great teaching tutorial on Tokay's! I just might consider getting 1 as a pet! 😊 I've taken care of them before!
Tokays are one of those animals that make you feel like a Pokemon trainer.
"It's like herping in silent hill"... I was thinking the same thing. 😂
That's so amazing!!
We've got some Tokay breeders here in the Pacific NorthWest who's sole goal is to get them to be exceedingly handle-able.
It's really cool watching.
Keep the videos coming Dav!

Really? I'm in the Seattle area. Would love to know more!
As always, loving these types of vids from you and glad you got to hang with Dan and Apple for a bit...so exciting. Keep on my friend...you are great...
Thanks! They are great people!
@17.40 ..A baby..I see a baby.. A HUMAN BABY...HAHAHAHA
They are spectacular for sure! I'm lucky enough to see it quite regularly in my house!
They are so darn cute! Probably shouldn’t stop rubbing his belly and you won’t get bit.😂🤣 I definitely enjoyed your adventure... The lighting made some of them look blue and almost maroon on that baby. It would be hard not to bring one home. 👍
Or maybe he bit me because I stopped....
I salute to the Budhist monk who ensures the lizard still live in the temple
Great video! It was nice to see Jeff.
thank you ever so much for this stunning piece
Dave you've done it again.....
Fantastic
Thanks!
Really enjoy your vids Dave keep up the great work!
Great video if I wasn't int tortoises I would probably get them
Naturally defensive, not aggressive, for the most part. Even the tokay that bit you did so after you were poking around on his back and neck, which are areas that predators attack. They're not jumping off of walls to attack people. Great video, and thanks for showing their natural habitats and how to better care for them (especially pointing out the necessity of a uvb).
I would love to see a chameleon habitat like one if the more common ones in the hobby like panthers or veiled chameleons
You filmed a morph tokay in the video but didn’t catch it.. it was amazing.. So much love abs respect..
“A human baby??” Lmaoo 😂
I live in Cambodia and there are tons of tokay geckos I just found one that fell in a trash bin and could not get out. I would like to note that they are social animals and I almost always see them in colonies.
Great job Dav! I can't believe I'm finally finding this video now. Do you (or anyone else) know of any good Tokay breeders by chance? Or could you maybe find one to visit at some point for a video? I know one of the biggest problems with Tokays in the hobby is the fact that they're imported so much so that you basically have to play gecko whisperer with them and I'd really rather have a captive bred option.
17:55 awww what an adorable little ball of unadulterated rage
It's Dav! Yay! Always love seeing Davs videos pop up in my list. Hey Dav just wanted to say Muchas gracias for all your work. I really enjoy your video's. Dav for President. 😂
Thanks Stormy!
I was just thinking how calm that Tokay was and then he got you. But man I love Tokays, I’m really thinking about trying to start a breeding colony since we rarely see cbb here.
what an outstanding video! Thank you so much for sharing these insights into them in the wild.
