    Nice and simple. I'm now an old man-- 66. However, at different periods of my life ,from my early twenties and times in between, I traveled in an old pickup truck with a camper shell . I had nothing built in.
    I used old milk crates, and old suitcase, and a duffle bag. I'm still using the ancient Coleman camp stove that I bought in 1973. I bought a used Coleman Lantern when I was twenty-five, in 1980. Still using it, too. For a bed I used a couple backpacking pads with a two inch thick piece of foam mattress on top. I take real pillows, a couple of sleeping bags, sheets and a wool blanket, so I can be flexible with the weather. After a work accident and having a vehicle smash into me three times when I was sitting still in traffic, I need more padding and pillows than when I was young.
    I finally sold my 97 F150. I would love to have another truck of similar size, but they are not made any more! So, I am considering buying a Subaru for travel and camping. I'd like a van, but can't find one that is reasonably priced. New ones are all pimped out with ass-warmers and crap that I care nothing about. And paying almost $50k for van just violates my sense of economy and normality (although at my age I can afford a new van and pay cash).
    If I can sit up in the back of a Subaru and read, I'll get one.

    Hi there. Thanks for doing the video. Can you show us your sleeping mat and sleeping bag setup? Will you be out there in very cold weather? If so, how will you keep warm enough in the car? Have you thought of doing an awning off the roof rack for cooking and stuff outside of the car? Are you going to be parking in areas where other people are around? In that case I would think you'd want to get some reflectix or something similar to cover the windows. I know, lots of questions! I only have a Honda Civic now but am thinking of getting an Outback or an SUV and taking off for days or weeks away a time to go backpacking or hiking and sleeping in the vehicle. Thanks.

    • @frontrangeforester3344
      @frontrangeforester3344  3 роки тому +2

      When I made the video I hadn't replaced my sleeping mat yet, but have since gotten one. When I test it out I will try to make a video! I will be adding reflectix and a dog to the car as additional heat sources, but ideally nothing lower than 25 or so. I am also planning on adding an awning (probably attached to a roof basket, and extending off the back) and will make a video on that as well!

    I don’t see the point in sleeping in a car if you’re legitimately camping. In other words this sort of stuff should be reserved for stealth camping where you’re not allowed to be camping in the first place. But the problem with using a Forester is that you then have to block the windows which alerts the authorities that something suspicious is going on while at the same time making it impossible to surveil your surroundings for any sort of impending threat. So really if you want to do stealth camping you pretty much need a work van with no windows in the cargo bay. The best way to camp as an adult is with a larger tent you can stand up in in conjunction with a cot of some sort so you’re not sleeping on the ground. If you feel there may be a security threat then sleep with a gun. The cheapest way to sleep indoors while camping in a Forester is to tow a 5X8 cargo trailer and put the army cot inside of your trailer. Then you’ve got your own mobile Japanese capsule hotel and you can even stow a camping toilet in there where it won’t stink up your car if you couldn’t empty it immediately.

    Also, FrontrangeForester, can you please confirm that you can sleep comfortably flat and stretched out in the back? , or are you sleeping at an angle? i'm looking at measurements of the 2021 forester and it is 60" from back to diverseat (when teh trunk is closed), which is much less than the 80-86" of the Outback. That's why I'm wondering if the Outback is better... though I don't like the higher price tag. :(

  • @oneandonlyval

    • @frontrangeforester3344

      The wood is 2'x4' precut plywood. It's usually in the "hobby wood" section at Home Depot.

    this is awesome. all the build options are overwhelming me and I dont have much time to prep before my first car camping experience coming up. this is exactly what I was looking for, something super easy! love how simple but also multi purpose it is with creating a low table outdoors. so the pieces of wood you got were already pre cut from Home Depot?
