The D&D cartoon was REALLY famous here in Brazil, probally because it was one of the only fantasy-themed cartoons that aired for a long time. The D&D cartoon actually introduced me to the world of RPG back in the day. Interesting fact: in Brazil Tiamat is voiced as a male. So I spent the majority of my teen years thinking the queen of dragons was a king. Venger is translated as Vingador (or Avenger in english), and I always got confused as to why or what he is avenging. Good times.
It's definitely canon that venger is ultimately redeemed and reunited with his father. Also the coolest thing in that show was the music. Totally pulled me in as a child.
So cool! One of my favorites! He seems like a half-fiend Sorlock. He's the Dungeon Master's son so he seems to have some sort of magical heritage. Warduke is really cool also. Thanks!
I thought that maybe it was something like Chthulhu: Something utterly alien by the standards of both the Realms and Earth, not precisely Evil, but certainly Not Good, and absolutely Unnatural.
Even though the cartoon aired on TV in my country, I didn't know a spec about DnD. I don't even remember how old I was, only is that it was on somewhere between 1995 and 1998. Couldn't get on time to properly watch, so the plot always eluded me, but for some reason Venger's design really stood out to me to the point that I was able to remember his bloody name throughout the years without really knowing anything else about him. My jaw literally dropped when I saw him on the cover of a new book, and I was like "No fucking way they're bringing him into the game!". I never saw that Warduke guy (probably because I couldn't watch the show consistently), so I thought this was some sort of a generic death knight guy with some cool visuals. Honestly, I don't mind such a "lift". Even if he ends up being different, I feel that his concept is so old it wouldn't really hurt.
A lot of people think that the movie Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves is the first D&D media that the D&D cartoon show protagonists Hank, Eric, Presto, Diana, Shiela and Bobby have appeared in since the cancellation of the show, but the truth is, they appeared in a single D&D comic book published by TSR, Inc in January 1996 called "The Grand Tour", and in that comic book, Presto is taken on a brief time travelling tour with Elminster Aumar. And in the game Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn, there are some portraits of the kids somewhere in Waukeen's Promenade in Athkatla that hint that the artist of the portraits believe that they have been killed by the Forgotten Realms variant of Tiamat. Since they appear in Honor Among Thieves, which is set in the same decade as Baldur's Gate 3 and more than 100 years after The Grand Tour and Baldur's Gate 2, it's obvious now that they are still alive, and most likely used a time travel spell Presto learned from Elminster to escape Tiamat.
In BG2 they appear in a picture hung in the Adventure Mart, an adventuring store located just a little southwest from Irenicus's dungeon where the PC emerges into Waukeen's Promenade in the Amnian city of Athkatla right in the beginning of the game.
Funny thing about the arcane fire being eldritch blast: when d&d 5e got a finish version they called eldritch blast velhotuli whitch means wizard flame and there is no direct translation for arcane in finish so they most likely directly translated arcane fire into the eldritch blast of finish version of d&d 5e
The kids showed up in the Dungeons and Dragons Honor among Thieves, in the Waterdeep labyrinth. Also the Dragon Graveyard happens to be in Faerun its called by the locals The Well of Dragons, if I remember right its along the the northeast edge of the Sunset mountains.
@@johnweatherman5685 Nine Hells/Baator, not the Abyss (unless something *massively* changed in later editions, most of what I know of lore is way back from 2nd Ed). She's always been aligned with Devils/baatezu, not Demons/tanar'ri. Tiamat was the Lord (Lady?) of Avernus, first layer of Hell, and later relegated to the position as the "watchdog" of the portal between Avernus and Dis, when Bel ousted her from the position as Lord of Avernus.
Well you did it. I had ABSOLUTELY NO KNOWLEDGE of this character before this video. I used to read the Dragonomicon and the Encyclopedia Magica for fun and yet I've never heard of Venger.

@@estebanrodriguez5409 I think he stated in a video that the generic bestiaries are global rules that apply to any world/realm, so valid for Toril too.
@@Genghis_Sean Sure, but it wasn't an official setting until much much later. Greyhawk and Mystara (Karameikos) was older. And even older was just Blackmoor.
Venger's 3e stat block has edition-specific reasons for its eccentricities. 3e was interested in a form of balance wich had the monsters and the player characters built using the same rules, thus making all monsters potentially playable. Venger is canonically a half-fiend (as a consequence of his dark bargain). Half-fiend is a "template", a 3e mechanic where you overlay a fixed set of abilities onto an existing creature. Half-fiend adds bite and claw attacks, thus Venger has them. Arcane Fire is a class feature for Venger's prestige class: Archmage. Prestige classes were character classes which could not be taken at 1st level and did not go all the way to 20th level. To enter a prestige class, a character would have to first meet specified requirements such as having certain skills or feats. Although the Warlock was introduced more than a year before the ASH, it was considered an underpowered class in its initial form. It, ironically, gained a cult popularity later because of its evocative lore. Wizards probably wanted to stick to core rulebook material for the ASH splat book. Instead of a sorcerous half-fiend, the better 3e build for Venter would have been Warlock / Acolyte of the Skin (both from Complete Arcane).
I was so surprised to see this guy as on the cover in this vid, my brain took a few seconds to remember where he's from. Couldn't believe it. Anyways, this is awesome
@@billmcdonald5063 yeah, it does. It's just a joke that became popular in Brazil, where the cartoon was very popular among people who mostly didn't know it was related to D&D
Small knick-pick; Tiamat is the Goddess of EVIL Dragons! So your argument that she is a force of Nature and Neutrality holds no water at all. Nice video essay on Venger, brought back memories of Saturday morning cartoons! I actually had the Knight and War Duke action figures a a kid. Good times!
Vengers ability to avoid death is a series of contingency spells, that triggers a dimensional door, or gaseous form spell. Also Dungeon Master is a Temporal Immortal of the Sphere of Matter. The Realm is his Home Plane. The Nameless One is a powerful Entropic Immortal of the Eternal Rank. A being of enough personal power to be able to kill Dungeon Master on his own home plane. It fits.
Dungeon Master could also be Bahamut. The kids weapons come from the Dragon Graveyard, meaning he has access to a place that otherwise only Tiamat can get to. And when the kids want to team up with Tiamat, he is clearly heartbroken.
The adventure in this edition could be an opportunity to get those teenagers back home. I wonder if they would recognize their world if they had not aged and they arrived in the 2020s.
Art of them in player's handbook seems to suggest they grew up, Uni the Unicorn is implied to have died ( and Eric the Cavalier and Sheila are missing. On ENWorld people joked redhead on the cover of new player's handbook looks like their kid on a quest to bring back prince Valiant haircut....or like if Sheila murdered Eric and stole his gear. However, there are also IDW comics with these same characters, where they're still teenagers but they hopped on a Spelljammer and ended in Forgotten Realms. Forgotten Realms wiki even says Presto is being tutored under Elminster, I guess because he was deemed too much of a danger to himself and his surrounding to be allowed to roam free.
A sequel with a group of current day teenagers would be fun. The basic lore already exists just need new heroes and the show practically writes itself.
During 1980s, oh yeah, Venger was iconic !!! Fun fact about the 1980s cartoon = it featured new character classes, subclasses, etc that were not yet released officially until slightly later into the next seasons of the show
Epic! I'm so glad he's returning to the game. But I must say this... FOR KIDS?!? I'm 52 years old and go through this entire series at least once a year. Love this show! 😍❤😍
That cartoon was really popular in Brasil even in the early 2000, i knew Venger waaaaaay before i discovered the D&D game. Was really excited to see him as the art of the new book.
I saw Venger in one of the missions in Idle Champions game, some time last week I noticed it, and was thinking how weird name it is and where it comes from. Huh, so it's from the same cartoon as Presto, Dungeon Master et al. The cartoon never aired where I'm from, and I started playing D&D in my thirties, so all this lore is quite new to me.
And I feel old. "Maybe, if their parents liked cartoons..."; that wad me. I watched this cartoon, back in the 80s. 😊 And thank you, Peter Cullen, for providing yet another voice to my childhood. Till all are one! Yeah, Venger was an interesting character, and once I started actually playing D&D, in the late 90s, and then DMing, in 2002, it was weird trying to figure out "what is Venger?"
Cancelled too soon, and I wasn't even born when it came out. I would like to see it get a reboot and if you look then you can find the unfinished script of episode 28.

MrRhexx talking about a mad villain destroying a world and leaving the conquered regions barren and razed: *Happy voice* MrRhexx talking about something even remotely real-world and political even though it's literally time-shenanigans with Nazis: *Extremely uncomfortable*
A last point. Even if the kids suceeding to turn Venger human was canon, there are still villains to fight. Tiamat isn't just Venger's enemy, but is also extremely hostile to the kids, and pretty much everything and everyone else. She attacks indiscrimiately without cause or provocation. There's also Venger's minions in the Underdark. They are in no way faithful to him and only serve under duress. In fact, some dvergar openly challenge Venger when The Nameless One forces Venger, Dungeon Master, and the kids to retreat to the Underdark, and it's only because Venger was able to intimidate them that they complied with his will. I could go on, but yes, there's still plenty of story to tell even if Venger was redeemed or permanently killed off in some way.
MrRhexx: Dude, check the 25:48 moment of your video. Venger gets "defeated" by freeing his inner good scene. His clothes remain intact and his fiend/imp traits vanish. The horn vanishes. The horn is not a part of his clothes. You are welcome.
Loved it! It would be awesome if you did vids for other characters of The Realm like War Duke etc or if there's not enough content for a single character, maybe do a combined video showcasing several such as the aforementioned War Duke and others such as the Paladin Strongheart.
I loved the dungeons and dragons cartoon as a kid. My parents had got the box set because they watched it as kids and like many 80s show they wanted me and my siblings to watch it, too. Needless to say, my favorite characters were Bobby and Uni...mostly because I love unicorns and I thought Bobby was just the sweetest kid.
This is my all time favorite dnd content channel. Have learned so much about monsters and it really helped step up my game as a dm. Still waiting for gem dragon videos though ;) (yes i know a lot of it is a different setting but my man here is so good at his lore job that i gotta see em anyway 😂).
Well, in the DnD movie, on the floor of the High Sun games, the third team is the original characters of the 1980s cartoon. Maybe Venger was there too. ☺️
Ive had two of my sons die. You never know how difficult something is until you carry your son's casket down the isle and put it into the herse to be taken to the summetary. Or to b at the hospital when the surgeon comes out and says im so sorry. Even now all these years later it i still tear up whenever i think about it. It really makes you cherish the time you have and not to waste any of. Thank you so much for doing this. God bless and stay safe
The Heroes of the cartoon also made a cameo in the latest D&D movie, when they are fighting the displacer beast in the arena. The last episode of the cartoon never aired so no one knows if our intrepid heroes ever made they way back home to our normal 1980s world and the fandom (largely from Brazil) always speculated that they might have been dead all along and "The Realm" was some sort of afterlife. In the cameo, they get trapped in a cage and Harper guy says "Forget about them, everyone inside of that cage is dead!". I think that was the coolest little detail ever and seems to support the theory that they were, in fact, dead all along.
So-- Night-Mare name is Night-Mare, and might not actually bet a Nightmare. He's a flying black horse creature that shoots fire- Nightmares dont shoot fire normally? But more importantly- this was mentioned a year ago by Chris Perkins in a D&D video but it was also talked about on some forums that seem to be gone now. I tried the wayback machine but I cant find it. I know the 3.5 book just calls it a Nightmare though. Also, Warduke was in Wild beyond the witchlight as well as the evil Wizard Kelek. Also- what do you mean your parents might know? I used to watch the show. . . oh god- I- I'm old...
Venger was the coolest villain ever. I loved watching the dnd cartoon and he was hands down my favorite villain. He was really the first character I decided to research and stuff. The cartoon never gave a good ending to the series and I wanted to know how it was to end
Since watching the cartoon as a child I always ask the DM to give me a golden grimoire when I play as wizard. It's a good way to judge the culture of them based in their initial reaction alone from hearing "Golden Grimoire".
There is a joke in Baldurs Gate 2 in the Adventurer Mart. Read the portraits on the walls and it relates some information about the party from the cartoon.
Hmmm... - The kids were sucked into the world against their will, through an almost mist-like portal - Made a deal with an unknown being - Became utterly corrupt and inhuman on gaining his power - Unable to leave his plane - Cannot be killed as he always returns a few days later - Cannot ever seem to achieve what it is he wants to achieve... I posit, that Venger is, in fact, a Dark Lord and the series is set in the Domains of Dread. The D&D cartoon is Ravenloft!
When I saw the kids from the cartoon in the recent dnd movie I was so hyped up. When I saw Venger on the new dmg, I cracked up 😂. Watched this show in the 90s before I ever played dnd in the first place. Its fun that wizards is bringing these characters back, and I would be very interested to know why.
Given my country has always had a tendency to have its modern TV be whatever was modern 20 years back in America, I actually watched that one when growing up - not on par with Tom and Jerry and the like, but damn, this brings back memories. I didn't even know what was DnD for over 10 years after watching it, and I'd have not realized it was related - or maybe even remembered it - if not for your video, amusingly enough. It was the light arrow bow that I probably remembered most from the show. :D
I'm 26, and this cartoon was part of my childhood here in Brazil. It is very loved here, and it's a source of various memes. fun fact: Venger has a horse that he uses when flying, but the guy has wings and the horse doesn't, so it's a common joke that the guy is actually holding his horse up with his legs
1:43 the DM grants them each a legendary weapon that allows them to go 1 v 1 w/ effing Tiamat, Lolth, Skeletal warriors; the things the kids from a damn carnival had to face *and beat* were astounding. OK, they always tied w/ Tiamat until they faced her in Avernus where the same weapons had even greater power. loved that show.

As a 90s kid from Brazil, I'm well acquainted with Venger! This show was repeated to exhaustion on open tv in the late 90s early 2000s 😂😂
I'm an old codger (remember watching it in my youth as well 😅)
So now I know this was my first ever 'Isekai Anime', huh? 😄
They even got op stuff at level one
I never realized Venger had this much background. Also never really thought about it.
I absolutely LIVED to see this, every Saturday morning🥰🥰🥰
I also like the idea that the reason Venger only has one horn is that his missing right horn represents the missing goodness in him
This animation is very famous in my country, even my mother who is an elderly woman has no idea what RPG is but she knows Venger

@@commonviewer2488 Honestly, I very much want to see that brawl.
Wait she broke free? When did this happen?
She broke free???
Maybe the "unnamed one" is the force of Chaos, adding the final "force" into the universe from the D&D settings.
I thought that maybe it was something like Chthulhu: Something utterly alien by the standards of both the Realms and Earth, not precisely Evil, but certainly Not Good, and absolutely Unnatural.
He's maybe the one, who shall not be named ;)
Isn't it canon that they NEVER find a way home?
@@GornkJhonas Yes. They are a bit older now, Bobby isn't 9 years old anymore.
Oh boy, I remember Venger from the original DnD cartoons. That is some OOOOOOOLD school shit right there!
In 80s this popular character was on Saturday morning cartoons. We also had the first edition D and D books to play.
But there were already Eldritch blast back in 3.5 complete arcane handbook
That D&D cartoon brought back serious memories. Childhood unlocked!
Different Graveyard. This one is expliticly Tiamat's home, which places it in the Abyss as Tiamat is a fiendish goddess.
True, but tbc, the labyrinth was in never winter not waterdeep, waterdeep wasn’t in the movie
Well you did it. I had ABSOLUTELY NO KNOWLEDGE of this character before this video. I used to read the Dragonomicon and the Encyclopedia Magica for fun and yet I've never heard of Venger.
"If their *parents* watched cartoons back in the 80s" Sir, I do not know why you made this unprovoked attack on me, but I now need to roll 3d10 psychic damage. Right after I take some ibuprofin for my back...
Jokes aside, good video! I loved this cartoon as a kid, even had the Tiamat toy they released for it, even though I wouldn't actually play D&D until 35 years later. Maybe we can talk WotC into an X-Men'97-esque revival for it.
I loved this cartoon growing up. Own the DVD now. Introduced me to the RPG.
Wait. Is this the first NON-Toril D&D lore that Rhexx has covered?!
No, he technically uses many older editions bestiaries for his videos

Oh yeah, the guy who flies with his wings and carries his horse with his legs
That nightmare can fly on its own I think
@@billmcdonald5063 yeah, it does. It's just a joke that became popular in Brazil, where the cartoon was very popular among people who mostly didn't know it was related to D&D
Never skipped a leg-day in his life.
Good times!
Everyone is Venger this... Venger that... and the poor Warduke is back too
It's neat that in some DnD Official Art in the books you can the the Heroes in the backgrounds of like some of them fighting blue dragons.
It fits.
Mage really is a superior rule set
Then how is Venger half-fiend when there are no fiends in the Known World?
Dude, someone else whose played D&D basic HUGS
Yes. This is the way. BECMI answers it.
They are adults now, they showed up in the D&D movie as a cameo and exist in "Wild Beyond Witchlight".
Canon has it that time moves faster in the Realm. Back home, it's only a few hours since they vanished.
Damn, I keep forgetting D&D has been around for a while. Good to see your still a fan of the game!
That cartoon was really popular in Brasil even in the early 2000, i knew Venger waaaaaay before i discovered the D&D game.
Was really excited to see him as the art of the new book.
Venger was in the D and D cartoon from the 80s....awwww yeah!!!
I like to imagine the evil part of him just reformed into Venger, now free of the good that was locked inside.
My childhood! Loved this show as a kid, even though I didn't understand all the references and overall plot.
World wise maybe Mystara, originally Warduke was Mystara in Quest of the Heartstone module. Warduke showed up in Greyhawk in 3.5
Too many moons and suns for Mystara
I'm an 80's baby. I watched Dungeons and Dragons before I'd even heard of the game. So this is pretty cool.
1983! I thought the cartoon was 90s. They were still playing it on UK TV then.
Most 1980s cartoons persisted through the 1990s.
Same here. I couldn't wait to watch them when they came out.

The DnD cartoon is such an underrated classic I really wanted the kids to find their way home.
Some fans of the cartoon made a 2018 last episode called Requiem, you should watch it.

MrRhexx talking about a mad villain destroying a world and leaving the conquered regions barren and razed: *Happy voice*
MrRhexx talking about something even remotely real-world and political even though it's literally time-shenanigans with Nazis: *Extremely uncomfortable*
IRL SUCKS.
I mean, one is purely fictional the other is touching on real life atrocities.
My father had 6 CDs of the D&D show I watched as a kid, good times.
MrRhexx: Dude, check the 25:48 moment of your video.

Well, in the DnD movie, on the floor of the High Sun games, the third team is the original characters of the 1980s cartoon. Maybe Venger was there too. ☺️
So not only we get character art for the main heroes of the T.V. Show for 5e but now we have art for the 3 villains as well? What a throwback

I love that this dude is showing up for real
I was really glad to see characters from the show like War Duke appear in the feywild campaign setting
There is a video of the final show script here on UA-cam.

Since watching the cartoon as a child I always ask the DM to give me a golden grimoire when I play as wizard.
It's a good way to judge the culture of them based in their initial reaction alone from hearing "Golden Grimoire".
Thought you would mention that he, apparently, used Imprisonment (Burial) on Kelek at the end of "The valley of the unicorns".
Very unique video! I loved it! May have to dig out my DND dvds!
There is a joke in Baldurs Gate 2 in the Adventurer Mart. Read the portraits on the walls and it relates some information about the party from the cartoon.
Since the horn broke when he was made human again I think it’s more than likely part of the costume.
Hmmm...
- The kids were sucked into the world against their will, through an almost mist-like portal
- Made a deal with an unknown being
- Became utterly corrupt and inhuman on gaining his power
- Unable to leave his plane
- Cannot be killed as he always returns a few days later
- Cannot ever seem to achieve what it is he wants to achieve...
I posit, that Venger is, in fact, a Dark Lord and the series is set in the Domains of Dread. The D&D cartoon is Ravenloft!
I like how the cast of the cartoon got home in a Brazilian car commercial. I'm not joking. It's a thing.
