Alabama was ranked #1 in the Coaches Poll but #2 in the Associated Press. Ohio State was ranked #1 in the AP and lost to USC in the Rose Bowl. Alabama won this game and moved up to #1 in the final rankings.
Ohio State and Bama were 1-2 all season and couldn't play each other because OSU was locked into the Rose Bowl and Bama was locked into the Sugar. Didn't matter anyway, because USC beat Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. So Bama won the title and USC, which went 11-0-1, finished No. 2. Florida State was also in the running at 11-0, but Oklahoma beat them pretty good in the Orange Bowl. Back in those days, some years you didn't know how the pollsters would vote after the bowls. Bama in 77 and Auburn in 83 were the highest-ranked teams to win their bowls and both got leapfrogged by a lower-ranked team who beat #1 in a bowl.
Love Re watching these games but I’m amazed at how the game has evolved.
I think we were ranked # 1 going into that game , as we had been all year .....

I was at that game, as an Alabama student. The thought of Alabama losing never crossed my mind.
Bama puts on a clinic on how to execute in the punting game here. Arkansas wasn't too bad either.
Bear: Lou Holtz is a smart coach. I just love coaching against smart coaches.
Arkansas should have never fired Lou Holtz.
He still would have gone to Notre Dame a few years later, I suspect. But firing him was insane.
Undefeated and playing #6?? Huh? So thankful for playoffs now
The haters thought the playoffs would prevent Bama from winning the NC ever again. LOL!!!!

i'm sure frank broyles loved the outcome of this game.

A #2 against a #6 is such bullshit.
