Most former East German families have made the difficult choice of whether or not to read their file. It didn’t take much to make people an informant or a “target.” The political rants people put on Facebook daily would have easily attracted attention and would have caused the government to have people around you reporting any of your suspicious behavior.
Right now China is producing a USB video/voice recorder/camera that fits on a keychain. The potential for the surveillance state has never been higher.
From what I understand Snowden was worried that the so called "stops" within the NSA were so loose that it became easy for NSA employees to obtainand sell information on any individual on request.
