This is exactly (almost) how I set our poles. I didn't want to hire a crane, so I rented an excavator and it worked great. I tried once to lift the poles with my tractors' front loader, but it wasn't high enough. I dug the two holes with the excavator earlier when I was doing some trench work and moving downed trees around, then rented it again when it was time to set the poles and do some ditch digging. But instead of using the wood collar, I used a strap choker. Then, instead of using braces connected to a collar, I'm fortunate to own a couple sets of patent scaffolds and set them up around each hole with the front braces out, then set the pole, replaced the front brace and laid 2x4's across the scaffolds horizontal rungs, and tie wired them down at two levels (top and bottom of the scaffolds), and then fastened cross boards perpendicular to the long boards and went with that. I built 2 rebar cages and bottom mats that were then surrounded with 3' diameter sonotube 6' deep. Compressing the dirt around it was easy. I did it with a hand tamper, adding a foot of fill dirt at a time. I hit a sandstone shelf at 4' and 5' on the excavation, so I have 1' and 2' of concrete showing above ground, but it's been there for 2 years and I've never had a problem with anything. Great video!

Nicely done! Thanks for your comment. Yep, there are several ways to get a solid foundation for pole mounts, and each installation site has its own unique challenges. It's great to hear this method worked out for you!
