The fact that you remember most of these shows, including the short-lived ones and the ones he flipped past, tells me you could cash in on having watched way too much TV as a kid by doing UA-cam videos about them. Although finding footage for the more obscure ones might be a tad difficult.

Funny how they used to say that then but now they have more TV than any one person can reasonably watch and still do anything else. Even if you didn’t do anything else, you still couldn’t watch everything that is on today. The sheer explosion of the amount of shows on now is what is unprecedented.

"Soap" sounds amazing but it never aired on Spain, unlike "The love Boat" that was quite popular here. But, of course, if we have to take one and only one show from the 70s it would be COLUMBO. It was brilliant during its entire 20-something year run. You should do an entire video about it!

Susan Harris was trying to be a female version of Norman Lear, but her shows hold up better and she is a much better gay ally based on the content of her shows. As an out Gay teen in the late 1990s I watched *Soap* four times through the Columbia House VHS tapes, the show was that good. The DVDs are missing footage that was there and look bad because of how horrible MPEG-2 compression makes analog videotape sources look.

I was 8 years old in 1977. I remember The Love Boat, Chips, Lou Grant, and Soap. Some iconic shows came out in 1977. If you are running low on tv guides and want to continue this series (which I hope you do), ebay and used book stores are great places to find more. I just bought 20 Mad and Cracked magazines from the 70's off ebay.

They canceled shows with higher ratings than whatever is in their timeslot now. And I don’t think it’s just the greater number of choices that is causing the network television audience shares to dwindle even further than they already have. The population is bigger now than it was then, so you would think that theory there would be more people watching their shows. But they’re not. They’re watching channels like this.

Only 10-years-old in 1977, I wouldn't bothered with Rafferty. Years later, I became a fan of Patrick McGoohan after watching "The Prisoner" on PBS, which led to buying "Secret Agent" on VHS, along with any movie he appeared in. Only recently, I obtained episodes of "Rafferty" (having only read about the series), and though they're not the best quality, I enjoy them. Wish more than 13 episodes were filmed, although since McGoohan himself, I heard, totally hated the series, perhaps it's just as well. Be Seeing You!

If I recall correctly, LOU GRANT was the first series to be described as a "dramedy" as, at the time, there was no word to describe a show that was half drama/half comedy. It ultimately set the tone for other MTM "dramedies" as HILL STREET BLUES, ST. ELSEWHERE, etc.

Love Boat was silly great. Princess ships now have their ship horns playing the Love Boat theme. This show, mostly singlehandedly, raised the concept of the cruise vacation from a fairly niche product back in the mid 70's to the multi-billion dollar industry it is today. The Pacific Princess that appeared on the show was first launched in 1971 (scrapped 2013), with a capacity of some 600 passengers, and was one of the bigger ships in its day. Today's ships literally carry 10 times that many. In fact, a 600 passenger ship is considered a "small ship" today and you only see those in the luxury segment.

Love Boat is literally "character actor: the series, guest starring movie character actor", also the saturday timeslot paired with Fantasy Island was pure win-win for turning your brain off. Soap was simply put Lightning in a Bottle (the MASH writers prolly helped). Also 20 affiliates refusing to run the show at all because gay and sex probably did quite a bit of signal boosting.
Pryor's show was clearly never going to fit Lorne's Great Late Night Takeover, but there was nowhere else for his brand of humor to go (HBO would let him say bad words, they very likely would not let him say bad words about network executives in almost real time, being they were just a tiny New York start up with hopes and dreams)

I watched and really liked Soap during the lockdown. It's funny how it was considered controversial during it's run. It's all pretty normal by today's media standards. The Love Boat is something I semi-regularly watch on Pluto TV. It's funny to think that it's a Spelling Production. It's pretty tame compared to Melrose Place. Although, even Melrose Place is nothing by 2020 standards. I haven't seen the Betty White Show, but I have seen a few episodes of Life With Elizabeth on Hulu. I also remember seeing her more than once on the Love Boat. Richard Mulligan from Soap/Empty Nest was also a guest on the Love Boat.

Loved that show, but no wonder it was shown in Englaand around 11:30pm.
incidentally, Mego were offered a licence to make toys for some movie called Star Wars.
They turned it down, "...because we already have rights to Man From Atlantis."

Noticed the very short lived "logans run" on one of the pages. Didn't know that came out in 1977... It certainly doesn't rate a mention, that's for sure.
Now I have an interesting story about CHIPS:
Many years later, I lived in Indonesia, where I was watching TV one night with my wife's family. And "CHiMPS" came on. This show was basically two chimpanzees dressed up as the CHIPS officers (uniforms an exact match) and "riding" little LAPD motorcycles. Crashing their bikes into different obstacles and getting into wild hijinks. Basically slapstick. I sat there with my jaw on the floor as the Indonesians in the room roared with laughter. Talk about culture shock. I have never been able to find a link to this show (one off?) but mother-of-God was it a surreal experience. I know it wasn't just a single skit, but perhaps not an entire season? It went on for at least 20-30 minutes and had the intro and outro of a real network series..but finding info on it has eluded me ever since.

No love for "The Man from Atlantis"? I remember enjoying that show as a kid (But then I also loved Battle Star Galactica (I re-watched some episodes recently, and had to apologise to my parents for making them sit though that shit). Logans' run was also very good and mostly held up when I re-watched some of it :)

Wow, your family must have had MONEY! We had to use the newspaper, including the Sunday paper wannabe TV guide, in our house! Also, I question your TV executive prowess if you did like or get one of the most successful TV shows in history (i.e. The Love Boat). The first 3-5 seasons were perfectly fine...mostly. A interesting combo of guest actors (tons of actors have a Love Boat in their history), exotic locals, skimpy outfits, romance, expensive cruises....and modestly amusing situational comedy. BTW, you really are skipping through to the comedies, because I spied a Logan's Run (and you didn't comment). Enjoy the content anyway!

I was a high schooler in 1977 and watched many of these shows. We had one TV set (black and White) so I was stuck with what my parents wanted to watch. The love boat was the only one I recall very clearly because it brought all the washed up stars from the big and little screens for one last hurrah. TV generally sucked, still does...

For what is worth. I have seen all your videos up to 9-30-2022. I am a baby-boomer here in the United States. Not only do I enjoy your videos. They scare me. It's pretty easy to look in the mirror and say the world is not the problem, it must be me thats failing to change with the times. In reality I could not get that lucky. Your point of view pushes back on a whole lot of BS that's out there. The more you express about you life as a network executive the better. In my view during the 60's and 70's they manipulated a whole lot of cancelled programs that we, the viewing public thought that is what want and needed. Modern day you suggested (I think) that we Star Trek fans of the baby boomers generation. Are just burned out on the gig. You were right. No matter what they put out. Wow much to my own personal upset that is something that will shorten my life not enhance it. Keep going! The thing about phone calls and e-mails coming from different source unless real. Massively entertaining. But maybe not so good. We as the audience would cut off one of our arms to see a real exchange such as that. But pretend not so much.

I was 6 in 1977. A great year for TV shows and Star Wars! I only seen two episodes of the Richard Pryor show. One took place in a courtroom (Robin Williams was in the cast) and the first one I saw was the Star Wars bar. Which still cracks me up to this day! I had no idea it only lasted four episodes. Thanks Paul for another trip down memory lane. 🤗

Sandra Bernhard was in it too. The show would have been perfect for Saturday at 10:00, leading in to SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE. But NBC put BIG HAWAII in that slot instead. (I loved the theme music for that short-lived show--I'd watch the opening credits and skip the rest.)

I saw the Frantics live in 2009 and own a few CDs you all kindly autographed. I LOVED Prisoners of Gravity and still have my VHS tapes of it off TVO. Did not know you were on the team there. You look similar enough to young Paul from 40 years ago and your mannerisms are still there so I am surprised I did not recognise you. Guess I am used to you with the wonderful Rick Green and others in the ensemble. Keep up the great work.

'Love Boat' was not perfect but it is seminal.
'Soap' was all over the place wasn't it?
'I think back about 'Carter Country' quite a bit, it had some funny scenes I still hear Mayor Burnside - Burnside By A Landslide : "Handlit Roy - Handlit, Handlit!" and "But Roy, I Can't Hit Ma Own Mother!"
I remember too much of this.
