I love the comments... Barney is a top paddler and pushes the limits of packrafting. Its easy to be critical I reckon. As or the IK/packraft comparison, there really isn't one. IK's simply aren't suitable for multi-day wilderness trips over passes and such--sure they'll paddle better, but packrafts certainly have their place, and barney's just existing at the edge of that place is all! beat downs are guaranteed!
I know right? Some knucklheads sitting behind a computer at work think they know all about accessing remote locations and pushing the limits. They've probably never run more than a lukewarm Class II in an overweight IK. Lol.
You know you got skills when you can post clips like this and not care about the peanut gallery. Anyone who commented critically on this is clueless -- trust me. Barny's literally at the top of the packrafting game. None of the critical comments come from people who ever run sections like this. If they did, they'd know that even the world's very best whitewater kayakers and PR's have made it clear: if you're not swimming, you're not challenging yourself. He does runs like this all the time, in places you simply can't carry a kayak or an IK+gear+food, etc. What a champ! See you next year bro!
@@gerardganey1666 I would say that was a good choice to exit fast. Looks like a serious stopper. You don’t want to stay there! Sometimes abandoning the boat ist just the right choice
@@current-raft He never gave himself any momentum. He could have broken over the boil. I've duck- boated the little white salmon twice at lower levels ...you always want extend maximum effort to punch through.
@@wernerxytra6151 yes I agree. It’s definitely possible to get over the boil with some more speed/momentum. But once you flipped and messed it up, try to get away from it as a swimmer.
Reading all the comments from folks trying to flex, explaining what they think went wrong, makes me feel sick. They have no idea who they're dealing with :'(
Outch...!!! in the last second of this video he broke his ass. 🤯😜 That's was happen if you want to paddle a rowdy Class 5 rapid in an Class 4 Packraft. 🤣 just saying. Really nice river anyway. BR Tom
I just watched a couple of your videos and what you're calling "IV-V" sure looks like III. I don't think you've actually ever run any true technical sections at IV and V level. Nothing like the Whataroa, that's for sure.
🤔 I don’t understand why anybody would paddle a pack raft instead of a high performance IK that has foot braces and thigh straps. PRs look sluggish and highly unstable to me. I guess it’s “whatever floats your boat”!
Because they're heavy AF. No way you're going to get them into some of these remote places. Swimming on massive drops in a Class IV-V rapid happens to everyone who runs them, even catarafts, much less IK's.
Packrafts are typically higher performance than IK's, especially alpacka packrafts. They handle more like kayaks while most IK's are more like mini-rafts. That's not a bad thing, but someone who is really competent in hardshell kayaking for example is going to prefer a packraft.
you know that you can easily put thighstraps on a ww Packraft, don't you? All the current ones from Alpacka and Kokop. if made for ww have the requisite D rings. A foot brace may or may not be necessary depending on how snug the feet are at the bow.. I have a Star Viper IK that I am trading for a pr simply because its easier to haul/portage 18 lbs than 38.

It must have hurt at the end
You almost had it bro
Next time...
Do people paddling kokopeli boats usually fall out of them before they flip over?

Those rocks hurt really bad. Don't ask me how I know. Lol. Glad you're OK I'm assuming

Zero forward speed. No chance to roll. An inevitable conclusion.
You know it was filmed in slow motion, right

It’s a class 3 pack raft. The nirvana unless I’m mistaken, is rated to 3

Not really a beat down. And where is the downstream brace? Keep your paddle in the water!
Easy to say when you're sitting at home or playing on your phone. Best made plans...
