My sister makes cookies at Christmas every year. For some unknown reason they all came out flat last year, but still so yummy. I think Christmas will feel different for you this year because it won't feel like the same day to day thing with mom and sister. Hey even great chefs would tell you that they had to LEARN to cook. I can tell you will enjoy trying recipes from that cookbook. I can heartily recommend the movie Julie And Julia Starring Amy Adams and Meryl Streep.
