I am still floored... as I have heard some say of me with artifacts and points... in the fantastic volume you have been able to locate. Would you say it has been a really self-taught understanding as to how you locate them?? Have you thought that those many Meg teeth might be sometimes off the same shark? Thanks again! Keep moving forward! Ben

      Indian Trace could go either way. our formations have been washed around by the ocean so its possible that the teeth tumbled some distance before coming to rest where we found them. it is also possible that the reformulation was not chaotic and the teeth are associated. either way they have found good homes now!

      @blackriverfossils  9 років тому

      Offtrailed Dino I've tried a spade in the past but i couldn't get it into the formation. the rocks are compacted so the only way we've found to effectively do it is a screwdriver to dig in between the gravel.

    You need to get an ABS digger to prevent damaging your finds, they're about $10 and last a lifetime since they wear like soft steel.

    • @blackriverfossils
      @blackriverfossils  8 років тому

      +Cujucuyo i'll check that out - i've tried all kinds of things over the years to limit damage to the teeth but they are so fragile and the formation is so hard it is next to impossible.

    • @Cujucuyo
      @Cujucuyo 8 років тому

      blackriverfossils
      Try it, it really is great for digging without damaging your finds, I use one for metal detecting: www.jimmysierra.com/tools_treasurescoopC.html - You could also get a Ball Tipped Coin Probe instead of a screwdriver, the ball tip won't do damage if you accidentally scrape your find, specially with teeth enamel.

    • @blackriverfossils
      @blackriverfossils  8 років тому

      +Cujucuyo It looks like plastic. I see why that would be ideal for detecting but we are digging in a compacted gravel formation that is commonly as hard as asphalt. Sometimes we can't even get unto it with a sledge hammer and pry bar.

    How do you tell the difference between a tooth that was damaged before fossilization, and after?

    • @blackriverfossils
      @blackriverfossils  9 років тому

      CORRECTS YOU great question! There are two ways I know of. If it was a break a long time ago, the color will be consistent across the entire tooth whereas a recent break will be a different color because the interior of the fossil will show. Also, a recent break will be rough, sharp on the edges, and sometimes jagged or sharp because it won't have had any time to wear naturally.

      no megalodon teeth can be found on nearly every contintent. Not sure about Antarctica but I wouldn't be surprised if they were there too.

    Phat fossils, learn from Black river fossils. See these guys go out to find the gems in the rough. You just buy it and put it on display. Have you ever been out exploring? It's not child's play. I know. Greetings from South-Africa Black River Fossils.

      @blackriverfossils  8 років тому

      yes the ocean level used to be much higher than it is now. giant sharks
      lived where I live now. they lost their teeth and i am finding them on
      the prehistoric ocean bottom.

      yo how old are some of these teeth?

  • @stukaman1162
    @stukaman1162 6 років тому

    One would think that when you dig these babies out of the muck that you'd use a plastic or wooden prod, and not a metal screw driver to avoid scratching things up. BTW, what are these teeth worth on the open market? Is there $$$ to be made in this field?

    I've heard you say "patho" a few times, and I'm not sure what you mean. Is it short for something? (I'm assuming it means deformed?)

    • @blackriverfossils
      @blackriverfossils  8 років тому

      +Ultimate Heel you're right - patho is just slang for pathologic which does mean deformed. Sorry I'm not as clear as I should be!

    How much time do you typically spend at these sites?

    • @blackriverfossils
      @blackriverfossils  5 років тому

      At a good site I'll go as often as I can and dig until I have blisters, usually hours at a time. Good sites are only accessible for a short window of time, usually only a couple days at most.
