Really interesting discussions Andrew! It would be interesting to hear from more junior artist who just made it into the industry and what their experiences are like/have been so far. I feel like most of your audience are students anyways, so these tips would really benefit a lot of the people who are looking for a way into the industry! It would also be interesting to invite 3-4 people from different industries such as games, commercial, feature film and just chat about the differences in the workplace, workload and stuff in general. Cheers!
I love & appreciate so much that you said that you don't really watch a lot of films but watch more anime & stuff. I love films but I probably also watch more anime & play more games at the end of the day myself because it gives that nice contrast and I can shut my brain off more. I've sometimes felt this kind of "elitism" of passion around the film genre if that makes sense, like if you're not a complete film nerd you're not passionate enough to work in VFX which I completely disagree with. I'm the same in that I just love the process & the work itself and at the end of the day i'm inspired more by realism in life & culture. Sorry for rambling, that just made me really happy to hear because it's the first time I've heard someone in VFX say that. Great talk! :)
oh yeah i have heard a few massive film buffs in the industry that look down on what we do and feel superior but not that many. Most people realize its just a job and care more about the process of doing the work itself. I feel games is where you would find more game focused people making games but in VFX i dont think people care too much about movies.
Can relate to not watching films, I love VFX but I felt like a bit of an outcast on my course because I come from a traditional art/arch background and didn't care about films
