I'm sorta in-between. I like early 2000's cars. Easy to work on, reliable, efficient, and modern but not too modern. No complications like direct injection but also no fiddly carburetor or complex mechanical injection. Diagnoses most issues on its own with OBDII, parts are readily available and not expensive or difficult to find.

They also have a decent amount of safety equipment, so aren't complete death traps.
Agreed, theres to much nostalgia about the 80s and earlier that the era between 1995 and 2005 to 2010 is largely forgotten and often put in the same bag as the post 2010 cars. I mean, the 80s are so hyped now, let's show some love to the era of the new millenium, the late 90s and 2000s.
I think that also the perfect example of that era was clarksons car years and early top gear.

The fact that everything wasn't electronic for no apparent reason. Love getting into a car with mechanical doorhandles, turning a key to start, releasing the manual handbrake and slotting into first, all with some nice mechanical feedback
Often if something isn't working right you just have to finesse it differently. But being electric it is either go or no go.
Well, the key is still just an electronic switch.
Manual handbrakes are life tho, I completely agree lol

I miss the designs and vast differentiation between models, also having to actually modify your car to get more power out of it instead of just a quick tune. Hope all is well Alex!

Cars always looked similar in each decade, not just cars nowadays.
If you look at all cars from 1920's, they all look similar. Same with 1960's cars, they all look similar. You people just never of the design trends, male car enthusiasts always complains about everyone.

I missed the days where all cars didn't have headlights brighter than the sun!
A lot of those are replacements where it’s not matched properly to the lens.
i've noticed the Mercedes EQC in my area, and my god the light bar along the front is blinding!
Xenon and LED headlights are amazing if YOUR car has them. Not so much when they're on the SUV behind your Miata...
Yeah especially on a push bike at 6am with them oncoming tho I have a 90s bike with an older light on it I like it way better then the new ones like the effect of like a halogen light turning off also new lights have so many modes that ones just on and off but I've no idea why but I like the halogen lights and seeing and not being blinded also what happened to low beam near an oncoming car bike or something now it's so what I can see you cant what's the problem

The fact that in the past car companies were fine and would even encourage modifications, whereas now changing the radio is treated like a war crime by the manufacturers. You can't even take some cars to a normal garage you have to take it to there specialist centre that can't actually fix your car.
You can't even change the radio in post of them. It's a bespoke fit and most of the interior wont work if you remove it :/
They did it on purpose so you have no choice but to pay them £1000s for a new one when it breaks out of warranty. Instead of just swap in a new DIN standard unit.
@Big Dongle I've got a horrible feeling that driving itself is going to become subscription based once the gov realises they aren't getting as big a slice of the pie now that modern cars are VED excemt. I'll oppose it every step of the way.

Right? Some models even require taking a brake module, window motor, ecu, or whatever to the dealer to get it 'synced' with your specific vin before it'll work in your car. Nothing but a senseless cash grab.

Everything being an suv with high mounted, high powered headlights that shine into the eyes and mirrors of every other normal height vehicle
And even into other high-riding vehicles driver! Roads aren't flat for christ's sake, even a slight bump will blind other drivers, and the worst comes with all the crests on the road! We already had high-beams for blinding other drivers, we dont need low-beams to do it too!
@@arvid3734 So many SUVs have awful headlights that blind me even when driving a high seated van. It doesn't help so many people now forget to turn off their full beams as well.
Trying to get that sweet spot with the choke so the engine would start on a winters morning.
And that smell of over-rich leaded petrol exhaust gas. Deadly but evocative.

At the grand age of 44, it seems like I've experienced a peak in automotive development. Being efficient and beating "the ring" are very worthy but so dull. Try a basic 205 from the 80s and feel the joy and the soft, pliant suspension. I've gone from a very complicated Alfa 147 to an '08 Aygo just to get back to basics. It may not be fast or flash, but I smile every time I sweep the needle towards the red line whilst keeping my licence.
Aygos are pretty fun cars. A friend who is delivery driver always redlines the little 1.0 engine everywhere and pulls handbrakes.
Around 1985, on a 10 day holiday back in the UK from my work in S East Asia, I rented an early 205 GTI. One of only 2 cars that have made me go .. "Wow..." on first driving. ( The other was a 911 ) . Performance, room, comfort and as you say, the suspension. I think only the French know how to do the suspension thing.
We've had lane assist in the UK for years. They're called cats eyes.
I get it in trucks like hgvs and lgvs but the boss is saying you need more breaks if he specs that in a truck or gets one with it in which is most but cars your either a mum who really wraps kids in cotton wool or just saying I'm kind of lazy or not properly focused or driving for too long without a break or something

@@Interknetz I almost feel like arguing that many of these assists make worse drivers. I mean look at people's spelling since people began using automatic spellcheckers en masse. If that doesn't say enough goodness I worry.

Already see that with parking sensors, even those with cameras, and yet they always still hit stuff - without them they might actually be less of an issue. Assistive technology in cars in such a society of people that don't engage their brain isn't the smartest thing humans have accomplished this century.

I miss knowing what car was coming around the corner often just by the sound of it, before even seeing it. Anyone remember the sound of the Ford Kent/Velencia (or whatever they were called, rebadged Duratech or something in later life?) engine? I could ALWAYS tell when a Fiesta was close by! I miss that sound.
...and the smell of the fuel. Getting stuck behind a retro classic now gets me insanely high on nostalgia.
Yeah I like the fuel smell too and it feels like it should be odd which it kind of does but oh well I guess people have like foot fetishes so liking the smell shouldnt be that weird I guess also good luck doing that with electric vehicles and working out what it is
The one thing I really miss is a full-size spare wheel in most cars now. Or even a spare at all.

Tyres are better quality now, so probably using a spare is quite rare!
They just give you a half arsed bottle of tyre sealer and later it it’s complete hell taking the tyres of the rim cuz that shit literally glues it together
Went outside the other day and found my car had a flat tyre I was annoyed that I would have to go buy a new one but then I realised I drive an old 2001 A3 and it had a full size spare in the boot! I love old cars.

also next to manuals being fking awesome, in modern days they would probably also help with people being on their phone less, as they know they have to provide direct input if anything were to happen
It does... I used to be on my phone (yes I know it's wrong and tried to stop but it's hard) on my parents cars, but since I drive a manual now I can't. It's safer
Honestly, manual transmissions really don’t help all that much with distracted driving. I drive a manual and I could still easily dick around on my phone while I’m driving, especially when I reach cruising speed and don’t have to change gears for awhile.
@@97I30T that's true, but I live in an area where there's a lot of traffic and most commutes are short with big amounts of acceleration and deceleration so I can't do it anymore lol

Bring back manual door locks, there is something enjoyable about making your passenger get out before you into the rain and waiting a bit for you to let them in

Even my 1985 car had central locking! Admittedly it was the Mayor of Sheffield's old limousine, so not your normal cheapy.
Back in the 90s buying fastcar magazine and seeing all the gems people have done plus flipping to the back pages and see what body kits are available. I wish my first car 77' MK1 golf never left.... bought it in 96' for £125 and sold it for £50! In 2003 £50 also got me a mk2 89' golf. To buy a golf of these eras now its value would be insane.
I’ve owned a manual e46 m3 coupe for many many years, and cover maybe 2k miles a year in it and it really is a joy to drive and I think it was just on that verge of technology and analogue. Prices seem to slightly on the rise too which is nice to see.
Recently bought not an M3 but an E46 330i on a 51 plate and totally agree. It feels old skool enough but also very analogue. I've got cruise, climate, heated seats, airbags everywhere, all the safety aids yet the engine sounds great on start up and isn't artificially muted while it handles great on its Continentals but nowhere near as well as a modern equivalent so one can have some fun on back roads. And although they aren't rising like M3s 330is are on the slight up...😀
Who's a lucky boy! ;-) I daily a 2001 e46 330ci and agree completely regarding the verge of technology and analogue. Manual box, torquey 3l six, and timeless looks... I actually look forward to my commute every day! The stereo is pants, but I prefer listening to the car now anyway!
Best thing with older cars is having the ability to actually work on them. Popped the bonnet on a 20' 1 series and had no clue wtf was going on. Working on a car i.e. servicing just makes the experience so much better
I loved my Landrover series lll's, I had four of them! You had to drive them with full concentration! You had to correct the steering every couple of seconds, the air con was a flap on the bulk head, the gear stick was solid metal and let you know if it was not going to go in gear. The windows opened by sliding them forward. The fuel gauge danced around and it was noisy, so no chance of falling asleep, and yes, if I saw a patch of grass I wanted to drive on it. I leant more car craft by skidding, sliding and bouncing my way around the beach and forest tracks in my old Series lll and I think that gave me an empathy with the vehicle and the road conditions.

@@korczuch1881 I agree with you. Fuel injection has by and large been a huge improvement over carbureted engines. I would never want a carbureted daily driver.
@@97I30T Exactly my point. Yeah I love having it in my weekend car, because if it doesn’t start, whatever, got many more weekends left, but if I’m late for work every other day because I can’t start my car, it gets annoying real fast.
I’ll give you one I miss about tractors: nice sound as standard and side windows that open

Tractors? OK then. And yet I can relate. Old tractors (by that I mean the 11 year old John Deere 5055e on the farm) are all about controls that actually move stuff in the engine unlike a lever that sends a command to a computer to increase throttle. Unnecessary complication.
They are also LOUD! I mean, I get why exhausts are quieter, but with those old machines you could easily hear the engine for miles away and you could tell immediately if something was wrong by the sound of the exhaust, rather than having a computer show a warning on the dashboard which distracts you from work. Intentional slight safety risk.
There is plastic, but the plastic was molded in a way that made it durable. In the forest that 5055e would lift up dirt and the plastic body would not care. Compare that to new tractors which have cheap plastic that is guaranteed to fail much sooner than you need it too. Planned obsolescence.
Finally, reparability. In the old tractors, you simply swap a broken part and be on your way. Today you have to be a hacker to bypass the computer's checks for genuine hardware and sometimes parts are never in stock to force you to go to the dealer for an overpriced repair. #RightToRepair

Worst thing are the emission crap and all around CVT's that whine instead of listening to the nice sound of a straight 6 or those mean v8's on some Ferguson. You almost can't find a mechanical machine around today (only mc cormick/landini and Belarus are still available). BUT listen to this: did you know that there are new CNH and JD sold without AdBlue equipement in Russia?
I completely agree! And that’s how I moved on to motorcycles - no lane assists, bonging sounds, electric steering, throttle, oh, and the key looks… like a key.
I miss having space in an interior. I have a 2002 Ford Taurus, and I could, if I wanted, put my legs into the passenger footwell given I have the center console turned into the third seat
I'm suprised that hasnt returned with autos being more popular theres no need for an auto on the center console tho cup holders and storage and a proper hand brakes good tho and a car being manual tho with thick door panels it probably would have no space for a 3rd front seat
Yup. I had a 1994 Ford Taurus with the front bench seat. It wasn't a very good car but I did enjoy how roomy and comfortable it was with the bench seat. You pretty much can only get front bench seats on low end full sized pickups anymore.
I recently had the chance to drive my mates mk2 ford Capri what a experience that was, looking over a 6mile long bonnet with no power steering and brakes that eventually stop you was just pure fun.
I'm 26 and just bought my first "old" car. Its a 1991 W124 Mercedes 300e and I LOVE it, despite getting a lot of stick from friends for driving an "old person's car"! I had a 2015 Audi A7 and a 2019 Mustang GT before, but this car leaves me yearning to drive it more than those ever did. Its a sensory adventure every time.
I miss being able to lean on a panel/fender etc.; do it now and it generally means a trip to the panel beater.
Fake engine noise in new cars. That has to be the dumbest thing automakers are doing right now.
As for the old, that's why I have a 94 Celica.

I had a cortina 1600e when I was a young man. Never forgotten that car wish I had it now. It was brilliant the paint job I had on it was fantastic. British racing green with some gold highlights. I had the engine modified to give more performance.
Oh Man - you nailed it. The point about every drive in an old car feeling like an occasion really got me. Back in the day I had a Daimler Sovereign 4.2 (think top-of-the-line XJ6). I'd drive that thing to the gym every evening and then, when I drove home, I'd make sure I was correctly attired - with shirt and tie - because the car demanded it. I always felt like a knob getting suited and booted after my workout - but, hey - I was driving a Jaaaaag!!!
I'm about to turn 23 and have a huge longing for a classic. I live in the UK and I just feel like an old MG or triumph etc with a bit of work and love would be ideal. The temptation to get a loan and build Porsche 356 replica is insane. Not stupid power, I've never been interested in that, (fortunate enough to have driven a MK1 V8 F type R and whilst it was absolutely amazing, I don't need 500+ hp everyday) something that feels fun and connected. Something beautiful to look at, engaging to drive and just amazing in everyway. That's driving my friends. Don't get me wrong, new cars are great, but I challenge you to find a car museum or classic car showroom, within the next few weeks and tell me you don't see something that calls to you. Then go to Audi or BMW and see if you get the same feeling... ( Big fan of these brands but you get my point) anyways, peace out, love old stuff and drive what makes you smile!
Am 20 years old and bought a peugeot 208 2014 last year, it is a nice car but when I remembered driving my dad's '85 golf mk2 I decided to buy it myself and got to do it this sunday. Even though it's half the power of the pug, it just feels so good. So much visibility, I can literally see anything whereas the pug's A pillars are so damn fat they annoy me at every roundabout. It does have things to fix and it is loud inside and struggles to keep 65 mph uphill, but it's just such a nice feeling. I'm so sad I was born so late to see all these disgusting new cars with no good ideas towards the styling, as well as trying to make majority of the new released cars all electric/hybrid. Just sad the insurance is literally a scam and I can't drive the mk2 yet, but hopefully find one soon as I really want to drive it again.

I'm also 21 and I agree cars now days are pain, and they are getting worse with time, I like old cars too but even modren cars from later 90s and early 00s they were still good, like the mk4 golf was great.
Give me an old car any day… a car that you can actually feel things and adapt, unlike new cars where everything is straight and you can’t really build that unique experience like you do with simple mechanics…. Old bike, old car, etc.

Besides, its more likely you will end uo crashing in a modern car with automatic trans, lane assist, cruise control and all that crap. When they are not present you are drawn into the driving and its much harder to get distracted. You literally cannot text because you are constantly shifting gears.

Not only are there anti-syphoning systems in modern cars but as I found out trying to fill up from a petrol canister in my 2009 fiesta, you need a special insert in place before you attempt fill up or the petrol doesn't go in.

Yeah and like you see possibly a quatro I did today it looks small compared to most new ones I mean especially a q7 or q5 audis were big anyway why does a a3 or a1 need to be so big it's like a van in an a1 you sit so high up too it's only one of the smallest cars beside the tt that audi makes
1:55 I've just bought a 2005 Toyota Yaris T Sport. 1.5L NA engine making 103bhp. At 975kg it's quick enough to be fun, but slow enough to be fun *at legal speeds*. Very short, close gearing just brings it to life.

I think the best thing about many old cars is that they pretty much all share round headlights but it how the rest of car is molded around these that makes each unique yet ever one somewhat familiar.

I've driven a lot of cars from MX-5s to 911s. But the best driving experience I've had was in a mk3 Golf. They were just built so well, and felt perfectly weighted in the corners.

Made me cry, so true in every word. I know that my "old" Hyundia i30 gd 1.4 na isn't old but the basic model was such a pleasure for everyday drive. It had everything you needed nothing annoying compared to my new i30 that beeps at every single fart, no spare wheel (I'm form the countryside, I can't call road assistance!). The new long transmission maybe fun on motorways, but here are no motorways. If I had the money I would go and buy back my "old" car.

@@TheG60528XiJinPing Anything electronic can be retro fitted to old cars. Anything chassis / mechanics related can't be fitted to new ones: the connectivity of driver to road directly through metal. No electronic interference.

I have a Morris Minor Traveller from 1970, it is really slow by today's standards but it never fails to put a grin on my face when I drive it, its got that distinctive A-series exhaust note, a proper over-run fart, and a steering wheel big enough for a battleship! The all round visibility is absolutely amazing, (seriously, the thing has NO blindspot) and its absolutely tiny, so its a doddle to park! I honestly think we have forgotten how to make a small car, a ford fiesta is actually quite a bit bigger than the moggy!
just picked up a 1991 1.0L Mk 2 Polo for 400quid, currently sanding it down and sorting out rust to respray it vw marine blue with the GTI pin striping :)
See, I'm 44 and I only learned to drive when I was 39. I learned in a 108 (I think, I've tried to forget it). It was the most awful driving experience, for basically all the reasons in this video. By contrast...my cars since then have been an MG ZR, Ford Puma, Toyota Gen7 Celica and I currently have a V6 MG ZS. Sure, none of them were particularly powerful (even the ZS only puts out about 177bhp), but they've all been fun to drive.
If you can find a decent one, or you don't mind a bit of a project, 2000-2005 is probably the best era of cars to go for - enough tech to make them perform well, not enough to make them a nightmare to maintain or turn you into a shit driver, and they're usually pretty fast and light compared with today's monstrosities.

Theres nothing wrong with owning a 1988 volvo I mean I'd probably mod it or engine swap it but I'd say it's still a car and quite safe it's a Volvo
@@aaroncable4739 But they're nowhere near the safety of modern cars, even the smaller ones. Advance crumple zones, airbags, seatbelts, even methods of building the car for integrity have improved massively even in the last 10 years. I love my classic car, I loved my 2003 Audi, but it's nowhere near as safe as even a modern Fabia.

I won't buy a car past 2010, unless it's a specific Electric car (Cybertruck, for example).
Older cars are just better in every way except safety! 🤣

Quite literally walking about a mile to collect our brand new car which had broke down due to steering lock fault and wouldn’t start!! We’ve only had it 6 days! And my 17 years old car at home has never skipped a beat!
This is why I like my car.. it has all the modern stuff that I want and still managed to keep a lot of the old school styling and functionality.
Many of the reasons are why i want to get a honda civic as my 1st car, they are quite reliable, no shitty electronics, has aftermarket mods and they are decently cheap
Get the generations from 199x - 2011 and you’ll have the time of your life, people hate on civics but there’s a reason they’re one of the most common cars in the world (for more than one reason!)

Yeah kind of the same with an older to 2012 focus it has features but it leaves you alone unless it breaks like a 2014 focus zetec which youd think would be more annoying and more features but it feels like a 2000 ford focus ghia which I like it for that and it's a ford so I guess theres mods might not be reliable I mean theres a saying for ford but I guess most cheap cars until 2010s

i use to own a 99' BMW 328i and 01' Toyota Camry. I do miss working my cars, easy to maintain and reliable. They also feel more Raw and imperfect, quiet frankly, i do miss haha. Switch from 4-wheels to 2-wheels and i love it. If im going to buy a car again it for sure would be a car from that era

I have an old....ish car, 59 plate Focus ST, no buttons on the steering wheel and a manual hand brake....Still modern enough to be reliable but old enough to enjoy driving, the 5 pot sound is a plus.
Rear wheel drive (yes there are still a few, but nowhere near as many as back in the day) , vacuum operated windscreen wipers, foot operated floor pump for the washers, furry dice, 8 track stereo, front bench seat that burned your arse when you jumped in on a sunny day, front drum brakes (feckin dangerous), 12 inch wheels and crossply tyres. You had to be switched on 100 percent back then :) Oh, and £50 for an engine from the scrappy that you changed yourself in just a few hours, and petrol was about 80 pence a gallon - yes, a gallon, not a litre!
cars were alot more honest back then.. now theyre designed not to last and be high maintenence
That’s surprising…maybe I’m too old but I remember cars being way more high maintenance than they are now. I’m not driving around with oil and tools in the trunk, carrying spare bits, and thank god I’m not scheduling time on a weekend anymore to poke at the carburetor. …and the grease gun is no longer in the easy access oil change box.
New cars require less maintenance in the short run, however when something goes wrong they can be expensive and complicated to fix. Older cars are a lot more mechanical.
Can still take fuel from a new car with antisyphon long screw driver does the job 😉
Turbo lag, torque steer, and feeling everything! I find myself trying to put those back into modern cars. I like a car that puts a little fear back into me.
Valve adjustment was a thing back in the day. Imagine spending a few hours a year after another oil change to make your engine run smooth and quiet.
Not even talking about all the electrical bullshittery. Dang, I miss driving my E30 already.

The older the better. always liked the 60-80's cars, and have an vintage Benz as well.. but lately im starting to like pre-war cars. they're just awesome. (literally)

30 years ago I had a mk1 Escort Van. It was simple, cheap to maintain and totally no thrills. Even newer cars that long ago were straightforward and light, so didn’t need loads of power. Sure, cars today are mighty safe, but all that solid refinement distances the driver from the physical sensations of driving. By god they’re a lot quicker when you get up them. Have fun, be safe
I'm quite fond of my JZZ30 Toyota Soarer vvti turbo. 1997 model, with a V160 6 speed transmission and a Haltech elite standalone.
But no traction control, no slip control, lane departure warnings etc.
I think there's a sweet spot between old and new.
When I was 18 I had a saloon Corolla 1.3 efi ..such a simple engine and it could take a trashing..such a fun car
my first car (Fiat 127) had character by the bucket load.
4 wheel understeer and a tad touchy when braking hard was just some of the fun to be had.
I hate the automatic braking systems on newer cars as they can be way to cautious sometimes as i have nearly rear ended so many cars automatically braking way too soon compared to older cars. Loving the videos, I wish you would bring back the podcasts.
I love an old MK1 Escort or MK3 Zodiac the same as the next person, but in the event of a motorway accident (or even getting in on a cold winter morning) I'd rather be in a modern Mondeo!
I daily a classic myself and yea, I get the appeal as you've outlined in your video series, but there are GOOD reasons why cars have evolved the way they have.
Got to agree with every single statement made in the video! I have am R32 Skyline GTR and it's an absolute buzz everytime I get the wheel because it feels mechanical! The turbos surge and sounds good, you hear everything you feel everything and you know your driving it, new cars are just not exciting it will be worse in 2022 when they bring in the automatic speed limiters to make you do the speed limits!
I miss looking out of the window and actually seeing the road or the car behind me im trying not to reverse into.Using all the buttons and knobs without looking. Also having full control over the engine and power delivery. No jerky digital throttle, no pling pling when you turn on the ignition or havent buckled in already, the clicking of the turn indicator, the feeling of the road in the steering wheel, the easyness of most repairs ( changing the timing belt or the sparkplugs) etc.
I just remember my old '91 Mitsubishi Lancer GLX...dang, that thing was indestructible.
2:43 This is partially true. I was a fuel technician whose job it was to siphon cars which had the wrong fuel put in. Most cars don't actually have anti-siphon technology. Audis, some BMWS, All Mercedes, Seat's, all VW's, Volvo's, Citroen's, pretty much all vans. You'd be surprised.
If you have a diesel car and want to siphon fuel without going into the fuel tank, just connect a pipe to your fuel filter (should be at the back left or right of your engine bay). Then turn on your ignition (without turning the engine on), wait 10 seconds, turn it off for 5 seconds then just repeat until you grab enough fuel from your car.
I miss my first car, a 99 mk1 fiat punto 60s team. No power steering, no electric windows, no central locking, no nothing. Simple and so much fun to drive! Rust killed it in the end, but I still miss it. But, then again, I've been brought up with classic cars, Series 1 Land Rovers, Standard Vanguards, Minis etc. and I want one of those for a similar reason. I briefly had an Austin A35 project car, it took me 1 day to completely re-wire the car!
Lane assist in my dad's Tuscan tried to pull us off the road, genuinely, the car was facing bushes until my dad realized and intervened. Glad I won't have to deal with that.
There are times Skoda's lane assist has nearly caused a collision on the motorway especially when going from normal width lanes to narrow roadwork lanes
Turbo lag. Only encountered it once. Dad had a 2 litre turbo petrol company car insured for anyone with a full licence, which I had just got, aged 30, passing my test in a 1.1 fiesta.
He wanted a go on my bike and I followed in his car with my sister. When he got to a nice straight road with ditches either side he dropped a cog on my 1200cc bike, yes bigger engine than the car I passed in, to pass someone.
To keep up I dropped a cog and floored the accelerator. Turbo lag meant the power kicked in at the worst possible time and I nearly ended up in the ditch. Fortunately I reacted and got us on track without my sister noticing, but she's not particularly observant.

I love my old car. I have a 1977 MGB Roadster. Yes she takes a little more effort to keep her running perfectly and she leaks in the rain. If it's slippy outside you can't drive like a tool. But on those days when it's dry and you can put the roof down and cruise the b-roads nothing better. The noise from the exhaust, the smell of the leather, the wind in your hair and flies in your teeth are all worth it. The family car is a 2024 MG HS and it's fine but the most excitement is when a decent song comes on Spotify!
