Dear Gary,I'm having problems with my own Astra (Opel/GM) 6T45 transmission. Bought this car with transmission issues (harsh, bumpy shifts and flares) expecting to fix them myself. I've done a few 6t40's/6t45's with the common 'no 3rd, 5th, reverse'. This specific transmission seems to have undergone a rebuild before where they replaced the waveplate from the 3,5,R. But it's a Gen1 trans and there was a Gen2 3,5,R/4,5,6 drum installed, with a 3 ring stator. That didn't seem right so i've changed that with the correct drum and a 4-ring stator. Installed the correct parts such as return spring and piston for 4,5,6. I put the transimission back together and also replaced the solenoids from the TEHCM and the valve body because there was a lot of steel debris in the trans. However, the trans still doesn't shift properly. Especially when the trans is at operating temperature. Shift flares at 3-4 shift, 2-3 shift (sometimes) and 5-6 shift. In general the shift quality is poor. Once in gear there are no slips. The ECU doesn't give any codes.Could it be that the pressure switches are going bad, but not bad enough jet to produce a dtc?? Or do you have another idea of what might be going on??Any help is much appreciated!!
Have you ever figured out the problem with the transmission flare from 2-3 and 3-4. I have the same issue and it only does it after the tranny is warmed up. No codes either. If it has to do with the pressure switches I would probably do that my self I know this is one of the common issues and the reason gen 2 doesn't have them. Lol I want to do the wave plate too but can't bring myself to do that much work now.
Have you seen a 6T40 with no drive or reverse after a few minutes of driving.? If I come back to it after awhile, it will move again. No codes. Somewhat dark fluid. Thanks?

In drive, car moves a little forward, then stops with engine still revving. We got a check engine light with a P2723/P0700 engine codes. Towed to dealer, and they tried the GM-recommended fix of replacing the computer+solenoid assembly in the transmission - $2500 repair! No help though, and so they said replace the whole transmission for $5000. The car is only worth about $7000. I've seen other videos showing internal cracked oil lines as the culprit for slightly older transmissions. We are towing to a second, independent repair shop for one more opinion. Any thoughts on possible root cause? Prior to this there were no noises, no odd transmission behaviors. In addition, two months prior we had taken to the dealer for a transmission fluid change as a purely maintenance item, and I've wondered whether this may have precipitated the failure.

Hey Gary. I have a 2011 Chevy Cruze. Same exact thing. No reverse 3rd or 5th. And I'm getting P2723 which is pointing to solenoid E which from what I understand controls R,3,5. Hello, great video by the way!! I have a 2014 chevy malibu 2.5l. When I shift into drive I hear a clunk sound that just started a few weeks ago. I hear the same sound when I'm coasting down the road and I tap on the gas pedal. I talked to my mechanic buddy and he said it could be the drive chain in the transmission or the transmission mounts? I had it the wheels off the other day to look it over. The mounts look fine and the cv shafts look good. I did notice some up and down movement where the driver side cv shaft goes in to the transmission. I could wiggle it up and down slightly. There is no oil leakage though. Is this normal?
Sorry for not replying sooner. I had my wife shift it from reverse to drive and I noticed a bit of movement with the transmission along with the clunk I keep hearing. My local mechanic mentioned it could be the mounts or the chain inside the transmission.

Thanks for the video! I have a Chevy Malibu 2011, the shift for 2nd to 3rd is a bit rough, and before the shift, I feel some kind of vibration near my right foot...does it sound like a faulty torque converter or transmission?
Hi Gary, appreciate the videos! Have a bit of a strange one, I have 2 captivas, both with an identical problem in the workshop. I tore one box down and found a broken wave plate and the resulting damage, the other one might be the same, but I think there might be something else going on as well. Both cars drove ok when cold, as soon as they warmed up, pump sounded like it was cavitating and lost all drive. The one I pulled down, whilst full of debris from the wavey failing, I could find nothing to explain the complete loss of forward and reverse. Weirdly both recently split the coolant tank and potentially overheated. Any ideas at all? Cheers! 👍
@@GaryFerraro I cut one of the filters open and it didn't look excessively bad but maybe it was! Picked oil up instantly while cold... 🤔 Cheers for the reply, I'll get one of em back together and give it a try. Was just a bit concerned the fault may have been in the tecem. Thanks 👍
The pump MUST BE replaced when you rebuild it! Trust me-put a BRAND NEW pump into it and your problem will go away. The pumps in these units tend to warp, and when they do, everything will look normal inside the pump.. You won't see any significant wear, or damage, where the pump gears ride, or on the gears themselves, but the pump will make very little, to NO pressure. Also.... If you read through the ATSG manual it specifically states that the DOTS on the inner and outter pump gears MUST BE TIMED WITH EACH OTHER! Sounds crazy, but you if you are attempting to re-run a USED GM pump, you MUST TIME/ALIGN the dots in the correct orientation as displayed in the ATSG manual. My shop offers a 5 year/100,000 mile warranty on all of our 6T45E rebuilds and we NEVER waste time with a used pump... We ALWAYS install a brand new AC Delco pump in ALL of them.. I have tried in the past to re-use GM pumps and have experienced low line pressure, loss of movement, just as you describe... Avoid the drama-replace the pump with a new one every time and I promise you this will never happen again. While you are at it-replace the 3-5-R drum, and also the ring tower, new TEHCM, all bonded pistons, all frictions, all steels, and a bushing kit, and the Trans Go shift kit-even with the new pump, and also the Sonnax wave plate update kit... THEN you will find great success in building these units. Trying to re-run used TRASH is only a recipe for disaster. You *might* get lucky and it *might* work with used parts.. or not... but if it does work-for how long? Do you want a warranty job coming back in? it makes your shop look TERRIBLE. Better to invest the $$$$ up front, and do it right, and not worry about them coming back. I spend about $1800 in parts on each 6T45E rebuild... That's WHOLESALE pricing from Transtar, or WIT... You gotta put the $$ in these units if you want them to work, and not come back under warranty. We all HATE come backs-and this unit is really bad about that if you don't put everything in them that they MUST have. This is not a high profit unit.. It is a HIGH COST unit when you want it to leave on your FIRST attempt-you have to do it right. Cutting corners with this unit is going to bring you nothing but frustration, LOST time, LOST money... Think about having to pull it again when your parking lot is FULL of new work that all pays in excess of $4000 per job... was it worth it to try and re-use a used part? HECK NO! Put the $$$ in them, GET RID OF THE JOB and move on to other new work. These units are the LEAST desirable work we get in because of the high cost of repair-for both us, and the customer, and the added time they take to work on. I can turn 4 6L80e jobs in a single day, or ONE 6T45.... You do the math.. it's a LOSING proposition working on them. I only do them because my "mom and pop" shops take them in and I don't want to send them to another shop. Given the choice we would NEVER work on one of these units... SIMPLE to build when you follow the recipe for success. but still far too much investment of resources when there are higher profit margins to be had with simpler/faster units.

Hey Gary. I have a 2011 Chevy Cruze. Same exact thing. No reverse 3rd or 5th. And I'm getting P2723 which is pointing to solenoid E which from what I understand controls R,3,5. Do you think replacing just the solenoid would do the trick or do you think I have a broke wave plate as well? We did a drain and fill too just to see if that might work. Fluid was black but no metal. Thanks for the help in advance.
I should mention I can actually hit 3rd. It just slips as soon as I do. I actually made it to 4th earlier today.

Hello,
great video by the way!!
You may have Slight movement, if not leaking should be ok. When the mounts where checked was someone sitting in the car power breaking it?
Sorry for not replying sooner. I had my wife shift it from reverse to drive and I noticed a bit of movement with the transmission along with the clunk I keep hearing. My local mechanic mentioned it could be the mounts or the chain inside the transmission.
@@Wayneanderson-x5w Not the chain, if you power brake the car in drive is there a lot of engine movement ? that will tell you if the mounts are good

Cheers! 👍
The filter is getting clogged up, when the filter clogs, you will loose drive

@@GaryFerraro Thanks for the response! It actually does not feel like its slipping, but it just does not pull under 1k rpm at all... it almost feels like a high stall converter. I used an actual Dexron-VI fluid instead of a MV fluid... so I thought this would be okay.

Question would the Sonnax 124555K 3-5-R Drum Saver Kit fix this issue ?

No reverse: drop pan and filter. Retoque valve body bolts. New filter and refill with new fluid. DON'T WAIT. Slipping wears out clutch packs very fast.
There is no pan or filter that can be changed in a normal service. It is a metalurgical issue with the wave plates.
@@tssci6774 Clutch plates not wave plates. They all have pans some filters are cleanable. 4 most common transmission problems.
1. Leaking externally from transmission cooler lines or radiator. No fluid no go.
2. Sludge in the valve body because of old fluid contaminated by water from condensation. Clogging passages.
3. Internal leaking caused loose bolts on the valve body. Causing lo pressure at the servo which compress the clutch plates in the clutch packs or apply a band. (works like a drum brake)
4. Bad electrical connections.
