    Please educate yourself on colorism and how it works before you comment. This is something that many people of color face. This issue is terrible in the black community. The history of black face is way to strong for people to not understand or have a little sympathy. We have people in are community that hate their skin. That is something NO ONE should have to go through.
    Please just think!

      Yeah, while most other games with a character creator I make representations of myself, for whatever reason with Splatoon I just.. don't. It's always some form of OC. I'm just realizing that and I wonder why exactly my Inkling/Octoling is the only exception, really..

    Hit a lot of nerves in these comments lol. I feel like the majority of people taking this video to heart are apart of the issue. Idgaf if you have a character that has darker skin than you, shi I got white oc’s myself. But if your going on games that give you that option to have dark skin and you take and use it for derogatory purposes then your doing digital blackface. Making your character black them naming yourself bs like “Monkey” or “Nikka/Ninja” is honestly sad and nobody’s laughing. Quite literally this same shit is on every game. Roblox,Fortnite,Vr, literally anywhere. Still I support people anyone choosing any shade they want as long as you’re not choosing it for any racist shit. Have a blessed day because its too early for everyone to be upset and trolling. Make the best out of the day please 🙏

    I am black myself and I'm not sure if this has anything to do with this, but when I was younger, whenever I had the chance to customize a character (I would always base it off myself), I would always make myself white. I'm not sure why I did, but I assume I saw some horrible things being done against black people and assumed I would be "liked" more if I "fit in." Thankfully, it didn't take me long to get over that.
    Me personally, I don't mind if you make your own character something that is not your skin color (Or sex in that matter). That's totally fine! Just don't use it in a way where you end up hurting others. Some people like using black skin tones because it makes them feel/look cool. That's alright in my opinion. Not sure how to explain it, but as long as they aren't so fixated on it, it should be fine.

    Tbh as a black person, I think people should be free to use their characters as they please and be judged on individual basis on IF they do harbor any sort of prejudice.
    Yellow flags and red flags are entirely subjective to ones experience and what is a yellow flag to one could be a red to other and even a green one to some, it really isn't something that can be used as a way to guage the integrity of ones morals and falls more on who is seeing those flags, which is even why we see cases of death threats being thrown around because someone saw a "red flag" and wanted to take action.
    And on the topic of cosplay: it goes both ways, Ive seen people cosplay black characters and also get flack and threats and bullying for it, its something that really is bad on both ends since it keeps people from having fun and dressing as cool characters the admire.
    Overall as society we should just move on and judge people not by the color of their skin (or of their OCs) but instead Judge them for their character.
    And tbh in my personal case, Splatoon 1 I made myself with my skin tone.
    Splatoon 2 I made a White female inkling that was another character entirely and then I made 8 with a ligher skintone then mine.
    Come Splatoon 3 and I made one with a darker skin tone.
    Tbh if Splatoon had more major customization options I would use more things besides skintone and hair color to differentiate my characters.
    Most people are just trying to have fun and have a nice variety of characters.
    Plus tbh on the "asian people using darker skin tones to look more intimidating" we need to remember that skin color still talks about color and that certain colors have more constrast and blend better with others and overall this doesn't come from prejudice or racism but more so because thats color that has a bigger clash with inkling hair and blends in with their eye masks while highlighting their sclera.
    Overall intentions is the most important thing when discussion of what is a red flag.

      Not when there's generations of history with people treating are skin as a joke. Not when dark skinned individuals are made to be the poster boy of being ugly.
      We as a society can't move on because they still have racism around this topic. The issue isn't people using different shades. The issue comes from the jokes and people using the skin color as a joke.
      Blackface and digital blackface are wrong.
      This is something that needs to be addressed because it's an issue.
      Topic of cosplay does not go both ways. What ever fairy tale you want is fine. This is reality and racism is real.

    • @dreamer1292
      @dreamer1292 4 місяці тому

      @@KenKnowsIt if we never move on then we will never move on.
      This sounds repetitive but we need to understand as a collective that there will always be bad people, we can't just make our problem everyone's problem, I feel bad ruining a lot of people's fun when they are doing something entirely innocent just because a fraction of them are bad.
      There will never be a moment in society where there is zero racism, if you are wanting for that to move on then unfortunately you will never move on because the more we (we as in everyone regardless of color) antagonize concepts, cultures, religions, clothes, hair styles and accents ( words too but but words are way more subjective and change meaning all the time) there will always be a 2 way conflict with the many innocent people in the middle suffering for it.
      We (now as in the black community), should be wary of things that concern us and watch out for potential dangers, but we should also be more careful to not act out and unnecessarily antagonize others, otherwise we are basically being like that one cop who shot someone because they were afraid of a gun and it turned out to be a BB, or that bullied kid who started being rude and beating up others, or the quiet kid who... (I think you got the point.
      Which is why its important to judge the individuals who use characters of a different skin tone rather than raise general blank statements that antagonize the concept of people having digial personas, OCs or avatars of a different skin tone, if there are people harassing others and sending death threats to people who are just having fun and not actually being hateful, spiteful or trying to make fun of others in bad faith then the message and meaning of what is digital black face is not clear enough.
      And overall you are completely right about wanting to talk about it and to discuss it.

    I think the context, as usual, matters a lot. Like, for a player who’s just doing solo queue with no online Splatoon presence, no voice chatting, then it doesn’t really matter. Vice versa though, then you have to think about the perception of white person playing a black/darkest tone character. And while it would be nice to life in a world where only our intentions matters and others perceptions don’t factor in, we don’t.
    For what it’s worth, I don’t run into a lot of players in solo queue using the darkest tone so I suspect this isn’t a super widespread issue.

    Personally, as a coping mechanism, I use female characters in every game with character customization. As a way to experience what my friends have called gender euphoria.
    Then there are people who choose the opposite sex for fun, which doesn’t seemed to be frowned upon. But playing as a completely different skin tone…
    I honestly don’t know what to think on this matter, I see some saying it’s fine as long as you keep away from digital blackface and are not being derogatory with it.
    I would like some people, especially of colour, to weigh in on this and tell me what they think.

    For me it's not just the darkest skintone. Don't get me wrong I 100% see and understand the blackface and colourism implications, but as lighter skinned (around Kens complexion) bp myself I'd be uncomfortable if someone of pale complexion (ie any non black person, or person not of a notably darker skinned race) used a skintone that was **significantly** darker than theirs. With the more light but still dark skintones it definitely is way harder to tell, but like you were mentioning in the previous video sometimes the non explicit stuff and how comfortable people are doing stuff can make me a bit uncomfortable. It can come off as a microagression.
    Saying this not to detract from other people's experiences or lower their voice, especially of more dark skintones (colourism is a terrible part of racism) I just want to put my perspective out there too.

    I am white and actually used a black skin tone in Splatoon 2 multiplayer.
    I basically skipped Splat 2 until Splat 3 was announced so while I didn't want to put in as much time as say Splat 1 I did get a library copy to play Octo Canyon and Octo expansion to get on par with the story. I had a white inkling for main story but chose a black octoling for Octo Expansion, as I read many aspects of the dlc from music to choice for marketing characters as black-coded, so I chose a black (basically the octo expansion trailer skin tone, not the darkest one) octoling with an afro that I thought looked fresh. After I saved Splatsville from doom he grew on me so I took the same octo character to pvp and salmon run for the two weeks left I had on my library copy.
    Overall Octo Expansion is one of my all time favourite single player shooter campaigns up there with the classics (Half Life, Halo, Quake, Wolfenstein)

    I made an OC with a dark skin tone on a different file and I thought he looked pretty cool and got attached to it. Then I started loving the character I made. I rarely made characters with tones like the darkest one in the game, so I felt more attachment to it. The whole thing with people using the darkest skin tone for a character just to bait or offend or make a joke out of it makes me sad. It also makes me feel like shit because it can lead to impulsive people immediately jumping to racism accusations, which makes me feel like I’m the bad guy for simply having a black OC, despite being biracial. Even when it doesn’t, it still makes me feel like crap and it’s so easy to jump to conclusions over one thing instead of looking at the intent and context of it all.
    It’s crazy that people that people drag cosplaying for having dark skin, yet go silent when a white person does it, or they don’t get as much flack. It’s insane
    💀
    I initially thought the “black people joking about their own stereotypes” thing was how black people aren’t laughing at their pain, but they know the stereotypes are bs, but when a non-black person does it, it doesn’t hit the same way and we don’t always know if that person really thinks that about black people.
    I rarely use the n-word mainly (I only use it in private occasionally by myself or saying it with my brother if we’re the only two people in the room) because it sounds weird coming from my voice and because most people would see me as racially ambiguous, they would jump to the “racist” conclusion without realizing I had a black father, even though some biracial people have used the word. I also refrain from saying it out of respect. I’m sure a lot of black people, if they knew what I looked like, would know I had a black parent because most white people assume I’m something else like Native American. I rarely hear questions about what I am from black people, so I just kinda guess they knew it could come off as disrespectful, they knew, or they had other things to deal with.
    I apologize for the rambling at the end, just wanted to get this off my chest

  • @squid583
    @squid583 4 місяці тому +7

    if your dark skin inkling is your oc, a black person is still allowed to feel suspicious, hence YELLOW flag. Making excuses and being aggressively defensive about doesn’t help. Listen to those who’ve experienced first hand the discrimination they’ve faced, because sadly, most likely than not, the person behind the character doesn’t have good intent. This has been proven with Jackpot.

    I'm really really sorry, but I didn't 100% understand the points in the video? I get this is probably just me being dumb and not understanding the experiences in the same way so I am sorry, I just want to understand fully
    Is the issue purely related to how sadly common racism is, and that anyone doing it just always appears to be done with ill-intent because of how often it _is_ done with ill intent?
    Do you see people online using the darkest skin tone and it just puts a bad feeling in you because you can't shake the idea it'll be some white asshole doing it to be racist? Or is it purely when you KNOW someone white has the darkest skin tone for their character, its just a huge red flag?
    Is there other points in the video I missed? What I picked up was primarily that other people in the community have their character this way with the intention of being racist, which is gross and sad, I think my default attitude would be "well, it's about the intention!" but I think, is the point that its just uncomfortable having to deal with it regardless of what people claim their intentions to be?
    Once again tho I'm sorry if I'm not 100% getting it, ty to anyone who can explain the situation me ;-;

    I'm a woman and i like to play man in video game and with different color skin because every color skin is beautiful and making a avatar in a video game = playing barby.
    I dont have the right to be happy and play a charactere that i like and custom a charactere the way i like?
    I mean is not me and i dont want my avatar to be me.
    Spoiler alert: It's cannot be me because I'm human girl and He's a calamar boy. It's Oc, avatar, barby, role play, imagination.... dream.
    If you like do self insert do it but stop bothering people who dont like do that.
    And playing a charactere with other color skin than you doesn't just show that... every color skin is beautiful?
    Also do that mean people dont have the right to play, write, draw charactere that isn't their exact skin tone, gender/s**, etc? It's stupid and racist. it's like when blacks and whites couldn't marry each other. AGAIN. It's just racist.
    I'm sorry if i've offended someone but i don't know... be human...
    I'm sick of seeing people becoming more and more racist and discriminatory on each side when things were finally starting to go in the right direction (at least where I live) when I was young.

    When I first saw that post of the white guy and the black inkling I pushed back on the idea that they were putting on digital blackface, and was happy that someone was able to use the skin color that I’m afraid to use. Seeing the recent a discourse from the jackpot team and how 1 of them used it as digital blackface my thoughts on it has changed (only a little). I have white friends and family that are artists that appreciate black/ African culture more then some black people themselves (me included) so it always made me happy when I see someone of a different culture/ethnicity uses it. It’s sad that some people are using it to mock us, but I’d like for us to not shame people for using dark-skinned characters in videos games. I can’t tell you how happy I get when I see other characters with my skin color that’s not just white in my matches.

    The internet and the “anonymity” of gaming spaces just enables people to pull some absolutely sheltered and bigoted behavior without harsh consequences. I wish people would realize that the internet is not anonymous, because if any of this stuff was taken offline, it would be different. People just need to have more empathy for others’ experiences that are not their own, especially if those experiences are influenced by being discriminated against based on stuff they cannot control, like skin color, hair texture, etc.

      Have you ever heard of the term "digital blackface" I think looking that up is a good starting point
      With this era of the internet a lot of people have found more ways to be racist when you can easily lie about your race on the internet and mock certain ppl by making an online caricature out of their race, you can find examples of this on social media and online games (there are a lot of ppl who like to larp as black and asian for some reason 🤨)
      It's harder to tell with splatoon players because you don't know the intent most of the time since it's a pvp with no voice chat and while some people just have ocs and change their character all of the time, some people choose the darkest skin tone while naming themselves after semi-censored slurs or weird stereotypes or to try to seem more ""intimidating"" or other problematic stuff like that
      I hope this was informative! Have a nice day ^_^

      The moral of the story is racist people will find creative ways to be racist even on a pvp without voice chat :/

    So, please don’t take this the wrong way, but I wasn’t able to watch this video or yesterday’s due to annoyance. I recognize that racism is an extremely important issue and is not right, however my personal experience is full of complaints about common struggles for different groups. (Sexism for girls and racism for black people. Please note that I know there is a nicer word than “black people” I just forgot it.) But as a white male, I get easily annoyed by this because everyone expects me to be ok with everything thrown at me. I’m assumed to be racist and sexist because of this and it’s to the point where I tend to not engage with anyone other than other white males that understand. Now, if you approach me (I’m antisocial with horrible skills) I’d be ok to hang out if you’re nice. I don’t care about any person and as a Christian, I’m unable to hate people, only actions. But, again, I understand racism is a problem and we have different experiences with it and everything else that built our ability to talk about it.

    Who said the player in the game is supposed to be real player? This is just ridiculous. Inklings and octolings are able to change their skin colour canonically. They are made up of ink so they can change their skin colour at any time.

    • @thirdwheel9938
      @thirdwheel9938 2 години тому

      That's not canon... They can however change their INK tone, I've read all the splatoon lore I could possibly get my hands on but never saw anything about inklings being able to change skin tone at will that's just misinfo, the only reason why you can change your skin tone in-game is because it's a literal videogame and locking your character into a certain appearance would be pretty inconvenient wouldn't it

      @@thirdwheel9938 I don't think so because inklings are made up of ink, but I've seen more severe cases like some japanese people blackfishing. This is not serious at all. If you like black people and you want you character to be black, then ok. But I'm not diregarding the people that do it to be racist. If you really care about this, then go to the places where it's the most severe.

    Disclaimer: I understand the issue of “black facing” and totally agree with the video. My respect to all PoC and sorry you have to endure a lot of racist crap out there.
    As for people who in general find it weird to pick ANY different skin tone than IRL, however… I have a question: is it weird to play as a squid instead of a human lol?
