Thank you for doing this side by side. Nobody else compares the 2 and my wife and I were trying to decide if it was worth it. We decided on the belt drive thanks to this video!
My chain drive opener is just as quiet as a belt drive unit. They made a chain speader that is located right by the sprocket to keep it quieter than the old design. And as long as you do your annual lubrication to keep things running smooth, it should last 25 - 30 years. My third stall opener is 30 years old now.
i just replaced my craftsman half hp that was installed in 1998 with a chamberlain chain drive just today. its full chain with no cable and has that new chain spreader.. after a quick lube of the hinges it was AS quiet as the belt one . :)
Odd because I have always had the belt and it makes just as much noise as the chain. I prefer knowing when someone is opening up the garage and is home so I prefer the sound. But thanks for posting… great video !

Its funny because the actual motor sounds quieter on the belt than the chain.. It's almost like its not the actual chain that makes the noise but the actual motor in the belt driven one.. It tricks you
if you want to make it quieter, go to home depot and get a tube of lucas oil products white lithium grease. Run a bead on the drive rail, and the inner trolley. It's the part that moves along the rail when the door is not attached. Hope this helps
The trolleys on my Craftsman/Chamberlain doors are both lined with nylon, and there is no lubricant needed (advised not to lube per manual) nor is the chain to be lubed ( which I also thought of doing, but either one will not be harmed if you do, it just makes an unneeded mess. The inside of the opener however is the part that's needs to be lubricated. I know most people don't want to invest the time and effort to take the cover off, but it's easier than you think. once you're in there, just take some lithium grease and dress the worm gear and steel shaft andit will quiet it some, and more importantly, last for many years. My old one is over 30 years old and runs like new.
The door opener duty is not a heavy task, and either the chain or belts should last a lifetime (such as 30 years) even with fairly heavy use. For comparison with motorcycles; typically drive belt finals never need to be replaced (or adjusted) whereas chains need periodic adjustments, have a definite wear-out, and are noisier. Chain drive is more efficient, the small difference in efficiency is not significant for garage doors.
This is an excellent demonstration. Was the belt version east to retro fit? I have 1 door. But I have the same chain drive chamberlain you have. Thinking about replacing it only because my bedroom is directly above the garage. The sound difference is stunning. Also I was looking at getting the chamberlain my Q kit, but it’s 60-80$ and the belt drive with it built in is 168-220$ . After seeing this demo I think it would be worth it to replace the whole thing . Thanks.
I am convinced and agree with you. The door noise appears to me similar but motor noise. The chain drive model giving off noticeable hum sound. Is your chain drive system use sn induction motor or dc motor?
I kind of relate the chain sound to my childhood working in the garage with my Grandpa. However, saying that, my Boss would fire me if I designed a chain driven automation machine!
It sounds like most of the noise from the chain version is from the opener itself. So that's not really a chain vs. belt. That's a crappy little chain vs. a premium belt.
Needed some lube on the wheels. The jerking is more pronounced with the quiet belt. I eventually replaced the chain with a soft start belt driven opener which helped as well.

3240s LiftMaster square drive what's the best opener at that time after 25 years I got out of the industry so I don't know what they have out there right now but I can tell you one thing stay away from genie, and I'm not talking about a 19 60s television show, when I bought my house I installed a 3280 which is a high-end 3240 it has the same motor as the residential Jack shafts which they have changed the number on now but the square rail screw drive is the best chain drives are the worst if you want to replace that gear assembly every 5 years and get a chain drive sure mine is coming on 14 years old never had a problem with it it's a LiftMaster square rail screw drive. 3280
Our chain opener seems to close hard (I tried to adjust travel, but couldn't get it slam the ground less). Does a belt drive close more softly? Thanks.
V Phan you’ll want an opener that lists Soft Start / Stop on the spec sheet. Since making the video I replaced the chain with another belt drive model that has that feature. It’s great!

So what last longer? I’m assuming the chain. Chains do stretch, but I think the belt would stretch faster & need to be replaced sooner.

The noise has little to do with the chain, but the motor design. You can have the same motor design with either chain or belt.

Belts deteriorate, with heat, cold, and can suddenly break right? if your OK with the noise, isn't a metal link one last longer, less likely to break?

wow, 3 years ago and it was $60-80? nowadays the ones I see are about $150-200.
I had chain version for 10 years no issue. My belt with better horse power is struggling to open my garage door . I had to keep re adjust.

The new belts are steel cables encassed in rubber with an expected life span of 30 years.
The belt drive seems to do alot of jerking back and fourth upon closing I wonder if that puts alot of stress on wheels and hardware
Needed some lube on the wheels. The jerking is more pronounced with the quiet belt. I eventually replaced the chain with a soft start belt driven opener which helped as well.
