In this video we take a trip on the Bankstown Line to see what has changed as it has reopened after being closed for Sydney Metro works for 1 month.
In approx July 2024 the Bankstown Line will close permanently to Sydney Trains and will reopen about a year later as a fully automated Sydney Metro Line.

Thanks for the ride. Being living in SA since '72, not been on the train from Sydenham to Bankstown for ages. Been on the Campbelltown to Circular Quay a few times. My brother lives near Campbelltown, so he drops me at the early 7am timeslot.

I am very happy because I live in the Bankstown line and it’s been a hard time for us to get to work, but finally, we can take trains!

I grew up travelling on the Bankstown line ever since the 2000s due to my Vietnamese family living along at a lot of the suburbs of the Bankstown Line.

No idea why they can't run both sets. Metro and the 'old' double deckers. Going to be boring sitting down at the old 'ground' level again like the old single deckers red rattlers.
Besides, I feel more comfortable having a driver at the front.
@@brianmorris8045running both defeats the whole purpose of making the conversion, which is to free up space on the city circle by “removing” the bankstown line. you also wouldn’t be able to run both on the same line as the metro and the standard sydney trains use different voltage and the platform screen doors the metro use wouldn’t align properly with current sydney trains
@@itsmenoodlebox The voltage is same 1500 DC but the screen door locations and removal of signalling will make it incompatible with current stock.
Unfortunately this beautiful line will be closed for 12 months soon😢
Great to see what they did at Dulwich Hill. I am glad I wont have any problems regarding the change over, I am a T4 boy. A lot of the signal work has been happening for months. Island platforms have 2 arms single have only 1, so signage is a good bet. 🏳🌈
I notice that Lakemba still has some of the older Cityrail era signs and platform numbers
Do you think you could list some of the changes they made along the Bankstown line because I barely see any differences aside from the changes mentioned in the video?
At least I don't see any changes that really stand out to me such as track realignments and platform gaps straightened and whatnot.
Surprised to hear that Sydney Metro will replace Bankstown line soon! But I have heard that T3 Sydenham to Bankstown line sections from Redfern to Lidcombe via Strathfield. Will the partial bankstown line be removed or will it be changed routes?
So during the closure not only they'll be installing the black fences and modifying the powerlines to metro standards, they'll be installing the doors on the platforms as well yes?
Would that closure in July align with opening of the Chatswood to Sydenham section? Also, I would assume the frequency around the City Circle would increase for the other 2 lines if Bankstown trains aren’t going thru

As of late I've been hearing two different things about the closure. I've been hearing July but I've also been hearing somewhere between July and October
Also heard that the RTBU wants the closure to be pushed back by a year because of driver shortage with the buses. They want it pushed back by a year so they can have 250+ fully trained bus drivers before they can start the closure
The RTBU don’t give a damn about bus drivers. Like they’ve been doing for several years now they are just trying every trick in the book to sabotage the closure and sabotage Metro as a whole. Because they know full well that once it’s up and running through the city far more people will see how massively superior a service it is. And once there’s a core Metro line through the city providing an alternative path for lots of commuters in the event of Sydney Trains problems (or strikes), that’s the start of the end of the RTBU’s influence and ability to cripple the network. Fortunately for the travelling public the project was far too far along, and made far too much overall sense, for even the ALP to cancel it. As their own review concluded in fact.
Can’t wait for the Chatswood-Sydenham section. Then this. Finally dragging Sydney towards a modern system. Best public transport investment in 100 years.
There’s no such thing as a driver shortage, as a matter of fact in a particular company to which I won’t say cos because I work for them.
They have now more drivers and still recruiting more than they did in March last year.

Honestly I just don't get why they'd want to convert the line metro when the normal trains work just fine and provide great service plus not to mention all the curved platforms just seems a bit hazardous for metro. Nice vlog btw.
because the bankstown line is a huge bottleneck in the city circle. converting to metro will free up all the sections of track used by the bankstown line and allow other services to use if needed and will also mean that more services can be ran on the other lines. as for the curved platforms, they will be straightened out during the 1 year closure of the line to accomodate the platform screen doors as the metro can’t use the curved platforms
@@itsmenoodlebox I don't think they will straighten out the platforms by the looks of things in this video but I do understand what you mean by bottle neck
@@AussieGunzel from what i remember from when the project was announced was that the platforms would all be straightened out but after watching i do see what you mean, so maybe those plans have changed and that’s no longer happening. will have to wait and see i guess
@@itsmenoodlebox Yea. Tbh I wouldn't be surprised if there's gonna be a lot of accidents on the Bankstown line once conversion is done if they do keep the platforms as is and quite possibly they'd face a difficult choice whether to convert back or spend extra money on new platforms

I find it crazy to operate metro driverless trains with no physical separation either above or under ground and uncovered, simply like a train and along-side freight rail in open level area with just some flimsy fence. I think this is not safe. They got driverless metro confused with a train lol. I did not see such nonsense done anywhere in the world.
