In the 1960s a new dance phenomenon spread across the nation, taking the country by storm… Northern Soul was its name and Wigan’s hottest nightclub, Wigan Casino became its home. Thousands descended weekly on Wigan, wanting to catch the latest Northern Soul artists and newest moves. Time has moved on but the music still courses through the streets of Wigan and its people… #WiganKeepsTheFaith

Calm down everybody, it was a long time ago and we're all definitely older and supposedly wiser! Whatever anyone is dancing like I'm chuffed Northern Soul - the music of my teenage years is still talked about and widely regarded. Forget the 'soulier than thou' atitude, lighten up and enjoy while we're still here to keep on keeping on.
Now I love Wigan and the great memories of the casino ,I now pop up to the empire roller ring ,for the niters there .and if people . want to make a video and dance ,with out any harm to any one ,good on them ,and we can all say ooo no. But I loved it well done all those who danced and rode there scoters .keep on keeping on .im on my way .
Fingers crossed this was for Comic Relief
I saw them filming this video.... As I recall it was a BOLTON company producing this video... KEEPING IT WIGAN...

We’re thrilled that so many people are viewing our Northern Soul video. Although some of the dancing in the video may not be strictly Northern Soul style the students at Wigan and Leigh College and the other dancers who were involved in the video embraced the style of music and dance - we think they did a fantastic job! We approached many Northern Soulies that go to the local clubs and although they expressed interest in being a part of the video unfortunately they didn’t come to the filming day. This was a project by The Galleries Shopping Centre with support from Wigan and Leigh College and Wigan Council. We wanted to reinvigorate Northern Soul in Wigan and introduce it to generations who may not know about it and its significance in the Wigan community in the 1960s.
The reason none of the locals involved in the Rare Soul Scene attended was because the Manageress of The Galleries was told they didn't want to be associated with a Flash Mob type video on the streets and in particular with Wigan Pier.. She was invited to the local clubs to video it there but was not interested.. Dance Dynamics and the tutors involved apparently have no knowledge of the scene.. Wigans Soul Scene is active and we have numerous venues in and around the Town and this video will do nothing to enhance that scene...This video has nothing in common with Wigans 60s heritage and I doubt if anyone involved knows anything of the Clubs from the 60s.. Most of the folks viewing this video are checking to see why it has upset so many people on the Soul Groups on Facebook and on Soul Source.. Will the Galleries be spending any money, time and making any floor space in the Galleries to a fitting tribute to Celebrate Wigans Soul Heritage ???
Your thrilled at what....non Northern soulies dancing in line ? Oh n if u think fkn is a profanity that's your problem. As far as I know it's not a profanity, just like WC isnt WATER CLOSET. Now grow up n stop taking the piss out of true Soulies. If you really cared about Northern Soul you'd have rebuilt another EMPRESS BALLROOM in WIgan, so the Council can cash in. I would never go to an allnighter in the Grand Arcade, your just rubbing salt into old wounds. Why not get TIFFANYS/MAXIMES back as a Northern venue once a month ? Wigan, the so called home of Northern Soul..aye back in the 1970s. And why couldd'nt you advertise for true Northern Soulies to attend an even t celebrating Wigans Northern Past and NOT IN A BLOODY SHOPPING CENTRE ?

Dance as you want the love of the music is what it's about . Silly people who want to dictate dance are not the music producers of that fine soul music.
It is a shame the old guard are upset by people enjoying the soul of the music.

What they should have done is lined the outskirts of this lot with Soulers from the time ,have them moved in and pushed this lot aside and show them how its done proper,

WIGAN Council must be two faced idiots... They tried so hard for so long to close the Casino..rather than support it.
Now there is some 'fame' to be had they are all over it.. Classic politicians I expect they can claim expenses to go down and have a look at the station road where The Casino stood.
As for this clip... no words will do..
As someone correctly pointed out on Facebook, Wigan keeps the faith, let's not forget it was the council who decided to close the Casino. So much for keeping the faith. Utter rubbish!
Barely caught the concept of Northern Soul, but least Wigan and Leigh has got involved. My personal opinion really.
It hasn't stopped you still have time to see what its really all about.. Just check events on Soul Source.
Makes me laff cos it was Wigan council who closed the Casino down because "There were plans to build on the site"? Then it caught fire, mmm? So this is like a "Look what we killed in Wigan" tribute.
This video does nothing to enhance the Rare Soul Scene in Wigan and although I am from Wigan and attend Soul venues in the Town and across the Country I do not recognise one person.. As for Keeping The Faith it is a blatant rip off of a commercial venture cashing in.. The Manageress was warned that she would make the local scene a laughing stock and took no notice off the advise and has done what folks have feared.. It's a disgrace and if this is how Jill Roberts thinks dancing is done I will give up
And Northern Soul wasn't around in the 60s, the music was but it wasn't called Northern Soul nor did they dance to it like they did in the Casino.
Also, even though I'm crippled I can dance better than any of the newbies in the film.

Line Dancing does not = Northern Soul dancing,lol. If this had been filmed anywhere but Wigan you might have got away with it, even an Essex girl like me finds this a joke.

What a load of tosh. Where the hell did they get those pathetic dancers from? Wigan Council and the film makers haven't got a bloody clue (as per usual).
I've only just come across this embarrassing representation of Northern Soul....Wigan council tried desperately in the 1970's to close the Casino down & to stop us attending through Police harassment etc.....go see the Newspaper articles in the local paper from the time if you dont believe me....this is about as far away from NS as you could possibly get, this is what we were/are trying to get away from....are you also going to try & make money of the back of the devotees who died in that building or travelling to or from the Casino....it was a den of iniquity at best, great music most of the time, & drugs were readily available, used by most & was the fuel the All Nighters ran on....you didn't like us then....what has changed, other than trying to make money out of our scene, all you have is a ready made crowd of Divs who would eat their own children for their 15 minutes of fame....thank the Lord that their are still hidden places were devotees still worship, far, far away from such embarrassing spectacles as this.....
