So we are back and this is a little bit of what you would call retro. This movie came out in 1986 in theaters I might add and I literally found out about it this year. This is TRANSFORMERS THE MOVIE 1986. The heroic Autobots defend their homeworld Cybertron from the evil Decepticons. Both factions are seething with anger, and that hatred has blinded them to a hideous menace headed their way. I thought for it to be 1986 it was pretty awesome I enjoyed every minute of it and the story should be made love action it’s pretty dope and UNICRON IS INSANE!!!!

I agree 86 movie is the best, Rise of the beasts I enjoyed however it's not acurate to g1, also Unicron doesn't transform in rise of the beasts and you barely see him which sucked. In addition Optimus was a jobber in most of this movie up until the end. Also G1 prime is gangster he took out an army of deceptions on his own in the 86 movie, meanwhile Prime in rise of the beasts struggled to take down Scourge who is no where near powerful as Megatron. In order to enjoy the movie I had to detach my g1 knowledge other wise it wouldn't have been as enjoyable. The scale of the beasts to the autobots is not accurate also. In beast wars the beasties were way smaller than the autobots. Overall rating I'd give a 3.5 out of 5, which is still better than all the bay verse movies

This movie carried alot more weight for us young fans who watched the TV series back in the 80s. Building rapport with characters and then watching your heroes die was tough. I still rewatch this movie about once a year, it's timeless for me. :)
My Mother was stunned to be watching the carnage unfold, and kept asking me questions throughout the film as her little boy was trying to hold back tears watching Optimus Prime die.
Optimus was an excellent role model of strength, nobility, honor and compassion. A real child hood hero.

As a result they rushed a two part episode of the animated series where Optimus was resurrected

This was when they started realising the characters were as important as the toys, and that with good characters, people actually got _attached_ to them. Soon after this, they actually started creating new toys of existing characters, like Powermaster Optimus Prime, and the Classic Pretenders, and they also started trademarking the character names as a matter of course so they could continue to reuse them.

    "Prime!"
"One shall stand, one shall fall."
"Why throw away your life so recklessly?"
"That's a question you should ask yourself, Megatron."
Fun Fact: The Blu-Ray special edition of this movie features an audio commentary by Nelson Shin (director), Flint Dille (story consultant), and Susan Blu (voice of Arcee).
Final Bow Fact: This was Orson Welles' final film before his death on October 10, 1985 at the age of 70. He recorded his lines five days prior, on October 5. This was Scatman Crothers' final film before his death on November 22, 1986 at age 76.
Final Countdown Fact: At the movie's beginning, when the Autobots are taking off on their ship, Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen) orders Cliffjumper for a countdown. Cliffjumper was voiced by Casey Kasem, who was the host of America's Top 40 Countdown for many years. This was obviously a little joke added by the writers, considering we didn't need to hear a shuttle countdown, and any character could have done this.
Arcee's Journey Facts: One of the original demands of the Transformers toyline and cartoon series was that no female Transformers could appear, as the toys were marketed strictly towards boys. However, writer Ron Friedman fought hard to include female robots in the Transformers lore, as his daughter was a huge fan of the franchise. This led to the creation of Arcee (Susan Blu), a female Autobot debuting in this movie, as well as a number of other female characters introduced during season 2 of The Transformers (1984). Ironically, despite being one of the movie's feature characters, no toy of Arcee was produced during the entirety of the original Transformers line, though at least one rejected prototype was designed. Arcee became the most famous female character in the Transformers brand, and numerous incarnations of her appeared in various other cartoons, comics, movies and toy series, but this was only in 2014, 28 years after her introduction, that Hasbro finally released a toy based on this movie's design.

This was one of the most traumatic films for us 80s kids, because for many of us, it not only was the first time we'd ever seen cartoon characters die, but they also killed off every character we loved (all to sell a new line of toys). The studio was bombarded with hate mail and protests, because you had thousands of kids across the country traumatized. It got so bad that they actually forced the studio to bring Optimus Prime back, in order to quell the anger.

Robotech is the first animated series that I know of that had an inter-racial relationship, Roy Focker and is a relationship with the bridge officer Claudia Grant, and that was a year before Transformers the Movie.
Though I am disappointed with the editing that Harmony Gold did to make Robotech, which was originally 3 completely unrated anime that they edited together into one, at least they didn't censor the death. Roy Focker wasn't the only person to die in the series, just the only main character, you see other die constantly in the background in battle, I remember a scene where the Zentraedi are attacking the SDF-1 and you see an explosion and you see some guy's head fly off in the background.

Best animated movie ever. I have purchased every release since I was a kid. Saved my money and recycled cans as a kid to buy this from my local video rental store (VHS). Movie wasn't even for sale, but the owner knew I love it. As I have rented it 4 times and he sold it it to me for an awesome $10 then. Took it to school to showed in class and everyone wanted a VHS copy or to borrow it for a day. I then found and purchased a hard VHS cover for it and cut the box up to put on the hard cover. All this as I was about 10 year old. Now as a 40 year old man. I have the 4k steelbook version. Showed it to my son and he loves it too.

I love that you two took time to watch this. It was amazing 80s movie. This movie was first movie where toy manufactures realized the power of good story and toy. They were trying to setup for new line and killing off old, but didn't realized when they killed Optimus how devastated children would be. I remember my father taking me to see this and even he was upset with it. The cartoons of the 80s taught boys and girls moral lessons. Why Optimus was so impactful is he showed boy how to be a good person. Take care of others, honor, honesty, compassion, sacrifice, etc. Just look at when both Optimus and Megatron fell. Optimus's people were upset, grieving and in tears. Megatron's people could care less about his and even Starscream kicking him when he was down. Also cast was so diverse too..Blaster voice was jamican if I am not mistaken, Jazz was always blues music loving and he was Prime's number one lieutenant. Arceee was included because girls also loved Transformers and lore also holds that there were female Transformers. Aleta One is Prime's girlfriend and Arcee was one of her troops to look after Prime and other Autobots as she was left to guard Cybertron.

It didn't work, the movie still flopped in the theaters, and the cuss was removed for the VHS release of the movie bringing the rating back down to a PG. This Prime respects all life regardless of their faction. Him pausing instead of shooting Megatron was Optimus weighing up his options. He didn't want to kill Megatron but Megatron was forcing his hand. Primes honor caused his death, not Hotrod (not gonna lie, this is the first time I have EVER said that). Definitely the best Transformers movie! What you didn't experience that most of us commenting have was the 2 seasons of the show before the movie came out. I watched those but did not see the movie until I was in my 20's as I told myself I was "too old" for cartoons back in 86 LOL. In the 1st 2 seasons, no one died. The lasers just bounced off and they came back week after week. The massacre on that ship up to the death of Optimus Prime was SO UNEXPECTED back then. No UA-cam or FaceBook... or even MySpace to warn us LOL. I may have gotten something in my eye when Optimus died. They did that so well. What I was happy about the new movies was that they were able to have Peter Cullen voice Optimus Prime. To me he is the one and only. I also remember in the 1st bay movie they did use the line "one shall stand, one shall fall". That gave me goosebumps even if I wasn't near as excited about the movie itself. ua-cam.com/video/XA6GAEoL6RQ/v-deo.html Glad you guys got to experience the true original!

There is a point in the movie where Galvatron tell the Sweeps to exterminate Ultra Magnus and you see a single connected beam come out of the 4 of them but when it cuts to Ultra Magnus its multiple blast that blows him up. This is because originally the Sweeps were to grab each of Ultra Magnus's limbs and pull him apart. Which is why when the Junkions put Ultra Magnus back together it only shows them grabbing his 4 limbs and the torso. But the producers thought it was too brutal to just have him pulled apart so they changed to it him just blowing up.

The original Transformers toyline was made up of Japanese transforming robot figures from other toylines that Hasbro either licensed or purchased from Japanese toy companies.
They then hired Bob Budiansky of Marvel to come up with a storyline and character profiles for the toys to make them more interesting to kids.
Marvel then wrote a miniseries in 1984 to accompany the toyline, and shortly after that in 1984 Hasbro licensed Sunbow to produce the original cartoon series.
So this movie had Sunbow and Marvel behind it. And the Marvel UK comics followed on from this movie to develop most of the lore surrounding Unicron and the creation of the Transformers.

This was also Orson Wells' last role before he died, and he is reported saying that he hated it. He felt that it was beneath him.
