Some simple things but easily forgotten, great vid Dave.
Another good idea is to never leave your knife laying on the ground when you are doing something else. Always have your knife sheathed when you're not using it. Even if it is for a few seconds to grab something. You can either lose it, fall into it, or get moisture on it which will be prone to rusting.
my seven-year-old freaked out when he thought you were flailing when you were demonstrating the use of a Ferro rod. he really likes your videos and is trying to learn from them and is doing a really good job.really made me proud.

What are some good ways I can get out in the woods. I want to do stuff like backpacking and camping. I live in the eastern woodlands.
I have a 3 inch Ferro rod and I can throw sparks off of it but I can never seem to get a fire going ,either my sparks go everywhere or they just sputter out , I hold my knife and drag the Ferro rod away from the knife as you do , I process my tinder as you do , do I need a bigger Ferro rod or do I just need to process more , or both ? , thanks and great videos , happy new year

I am trying to start into bushcraft because I am into preparedness but I am very confuse to how bushcraft must be done. I heard people saying that bushcraft is supposed to be done with a knife only, meaning you are supposed to go to the woods and survive with a knife only. Other people say that you are supposed to have an Axe, a knife, a saw and as many stuff as you can carry. And there is a lot of discussion to the size of the knife you should carry. A lot people doesn't like big knives. And I don't know what to make of that. I don't know if you adressed this already but if you don't could you make a video explaining what size of knives we are supposed to carry and what type of equipament if any we should carry to be considered bushcraft. My intention is to learn to survive in the woods with the least equipament possible. Could be done with only a knife? Could be done with no knife? Thanks in advance.

why don't people take a rubber hammer to split wood?
Just a couple of points I feel should be added, Brother.
1. Whenever you are NOT using your knife, put straight back into the damned sheath!
Don't pop it down next to you thinking it'll be fine and dandy, I have seen people do that and then go to pick up their knife and grab the blade rather than the handle. These people weren't new to bushcraft either, just a tad unlucky and a tad more lax about the application of "common sense".
2. I've seen this one in well practiced bushcrafters as well, is not passing knives by the handle!
They got used to travelling to a trailhead by car with all the blades (knives, axes, and saws) in a locked box with their firearms, then the driver would distribute the 'kit' by passing out the gear any old how because "Hey, it's all sheathed. No exposed cutting edges or triggers, what's the worst that could happen?!". Unfortunately, that attitude carried down trail to camp and 3 cut palms later I'm teaching basic knife safety to my mates (most of whom have served in the British military, including on the occasion of that lecture a former corporal from the SAS - he really should have known better, but familiarity begets complacency)!
