Watching the first notch still and just had to mention I figured out that exact technique (batoning in to the straight cut and every thing) as a teen with no one telling me that was the best way. I feel smarter now. thanks Dave.
A few years back I had a pretty decent OOPS to my thumb and the next day I started learning about knife safety and how to properly use one. These are important lessons because it only takes one second to seriously ruin your day.
Great video that is a good compliment to Bush Craft 101 by Dave. Reading on page 39 for the knee lever I wanted to actually see it being done. Thanks Dave for all you do for the community.
Great, Dave! My daughter and I are about to spend a few days in the great outdoors here in Texas, and she'll be working on these skills with her Mora!!
***** Mora is a brand of knives from Sweden. They're inexpensive and a good starter knife for kids. Although I do not think highly of them as a whole, they are the kind of kind of knives you can buy for about $15 US dollars, then beat the crap out of them and not care what happens to them. I'm making her a new one for Christmas out of 1095 steel that will wipe any memory of a Mora away for her. But for now, that's what she's been learning with.
Great Vid--you are with out question the best at what you do for the common man and don't think for a minute that we don't appreciate it . KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK BROTHER. See you on the path.
Another awesome video! Love these skill-based videos--I feel like I learn so much! Now just need to get some dirt time and turn this information into skill.
i like your safety element in you tutorial ,, never can have enough of that ,,,,, i will say ,that the baton you are using is way small compared to the ones i use ,, i use at least a 2inch dia, usually a bit more ,,, i find that less strikes makes for faster cuts ,
Is that knife, the Mora Bushcraft Black, that you sell on your website? Thank you Mr. Canterbury for all of your videos, my son and I really enjoy watching them. All the best to you.
Is the Mora Bushcraft Black worth the extra 20 dollars over the Mora Companion Heavy Duty or 25 dollars over the Mora Companion? Also thanks for the great informative videos Dave. Love them as usual.
great vid, hell the last 45 seconds of it are priceless knowledge to piles of frustrated tinder ball flingers.. i remeber thinking when i was first showed that "well, duh, aint that just majick." and it was sooo much easier after... ever fling an alcy stove in your buddys pack trying to light it? never forgiven...
The best way to do bushcraft on a budget is "naked and afraid"....no clothing cost and very low equipment expenditure. YES....I'm trying to make a joke. Great video as always.
LOL ! Anyone who has used a knife surely has cristined the blade at some point with their own blood, I wish I had learned these techniques when I was a younger man !

So what you're making is a "try stick" right? There's a good PDF on that process on the web, have all of your students try that exercise
