  • How to upgrade mudguard and Rust repair (ETCG style) - Ford Focus 2001
Welcome back, this is a longer video but the point is the same, I did work on my car. I wanted to get rid of those textile mudguards on the rear because they retain moisture. The idea was to replace them with plastic but that didn't work out. In the process I found a lot of rust and fixed it ETCG style, after I coated the original textile mudguards in a ruber-paint and used those. Looks like it kinda worked out.
By the way, this took me like 3-4 days to finish.
    Here you have EricTheCarGuys video:
    • Easy Rust Repair the '...
    Chemicals and paint:
The paint I used on the metal: "Köber" ideal! Email superlucios
The body filler is called: Toro CHFB002/A0.25 Glass Putty - it has fiberglass in it
The ruber-paint is a for professional use and it"s called: Colormix Antigravel Low Voc (1kg) (I used 3 cans)
The rust inhibitor... well I have no idea, they gave me like 200ml, no label.
BUY protective equipment to use while working the chemicals
    Tools needed:
-socket set (long and short sockets + handles + beaker bar)
    -screwdrivers (small and large)
    -pliers
    -jack + jack stands
    - torx + Allen keys/bits
    -wire brush
    -paint brush
-Trusty FLEX (angle grinder) with wire brush

It was raining a few days ago and I used the car. Today I went and checked out the painted textile mudguards, they were dry!

Carpet was used apparently in order to reduce noise from water or grit hitting against the shielding vs plastic. The problem was Ford mounted the shocks inside of the shielding. Toyota did a better job on the vvti corola of same era, no shock inside of wheel arch shielding and more clearance between carpet shield and body.
The idea was good , just needed some long term thinking by Ford.
Great car overall by them though.

This is very good information however I use oil or fluid film to coat metal to keep it from rusting any further

I had this issue with my mk1 focus. I just grinded off all the rust, sprayed with rust converter, anti rust zinc primer and rubberised paint.

Inițial am cumpărat ceva QWP de plastic de la un magazin de piese, dar nu se potrivea. După, am vopsit cele textile care erau pe mașină. Le-am vopsit cu vopsea de aia under coating/ cu bitumen.

It looks alright but you could have at least welded in some piece of metal in that hole.

Sorry, I have no welder or welding skills, I could have put a piece of wire mesh in before the body filler tough...

n33niki you dont need much skill. Learn by doing ;) you can mostly rent a welder for cheap. Wire mesh would rust easier than poly its better to put just filler with some fiberglass or something.

In the US or Germany probably you can rent a welder... here in Romania the only place I saw where you can rent tools is Dedeman. It's like 65km from where I lived...
I did the fiberglass filler though and it looks like it holds pretty well!
About the wire mesh... I saw ChrisFix's video where he put wire mesh in the panel for extra support and covered it with fiberglass putty and then normal body-filler. That way the mesh didn't have any contact with air.

Succes!

    Bad repair would not recommend!!!
Rear belt mount are a common rust spot on Focus. Both righ and leftside.
And you repair that hole with bodyfiller? :O
Even if the repair is done behind the belt mount i can guarantee you that the metal around that mount are bad aswell.
What do you think happens to the person who uses that belt , in a big head-on collision?
I do not wanna be that person.

      Grate tip BTW.
*fiberglass reinforced body filler + here in Romania nobody uses the rear seat belts.
Also a lack of welding equipment didn't help either.
I will revisit those mudguards in the future, but until then, doamne ajută.
